A ged 56 and I feel like a traitor. Not that I am unhappy, far from it, Idon’t think that I have ever been happier than I am right now. Andbeing 56 doesn’t worry me unduly. I rather like it. Much of my
happiness, if not all of it, comes from the presence in my life of one Mr R. MrR the husband, six foot five of loveliness has made the past three years flyby with almost alarming speed.
So why am I feeling like a traitor? Let me explain. It’s almost 20 yearssince I was unceremonioulsy made redundant by the huge publishingcompany I worked for as art director in London. I knew shortly after joiningthem from a smaller but far more honourable firm that I had made a big, cashinfluenced mistake. A whopper! But what can you do when someone danglesdouble your salary in front of you and a sports car to boot (actually thesports car had no boot, that was where the engine was and the bit where Ithought the engine would be was only big enough to store the Targa Top roofshould you take it off)?
I loved most of the peoplein the new job but therewere a handful who I wouldhappily have sent to Hell ina handcart. Anyway, thingsdidn’t work out, it seemedthat the ethos there wasthat art directors did notneed to read the booksbefore designing thecovers, something that Ihad always held to be true.So, after 15 years designingbooks and book covers Iwas out, sat in a café in theFulham Road with a bin liner ofstuff and a large coffee.
It was a sad time; I lovedbooks, I loved publishing, butthe experience left a bad tastein my mouth, one that I havesince got rid of by eating a lot offood and then writing about it.
Now I feel like a traitor, a traitor because I love the new Kindle that Mr Rhas given me for my birthday. It’s not a book, it doesn’t look as lovely as areal book, but my god – it works so well! Within five minutes of turning it on Ihad purchased Benson At Sixty by Michael Carson and Perfect People byPeter James.
In my heart I still love proper, printed books – but right now I love my newKindle and I love Mr R.

Whether it is called ‘SharedSpace’, ‘Shared Streets’ or‘designing for negotiation’,
the principle remains the same. Byblurring the designation betweenpavements and roads, theexperience for pedestrians can behugely improved, without totaldetriment to motorists.
New Road in Brighton re-openedin 2007 after £1 million was spenton improvement works. The scheme,by Landscape Projects and GehlArchitects, embraced the shared spaceconcept. Pedestrians love it; motoristscan at least use it. One of the country’smost significant streets, ExhibitionRoad in South Kensington, has justundergone similar treatment.
Exhibition Road takes its namefrom the Great Exhibition of 1851, fromwhich surplus funds were used to buildwhat are now known as the NaturalHistory Museum, Science Museum andVictoria & Albert Museum. These threemajestic museums, along with the RoyalAlbert Hall, Imperial College and manyother noble institutions, populate the area– as do millions of visitors every year.
The remodelled Exhibition Road wasopened to much acclaim on 1 February2012, on time and on budget. Admittedly,that budget was £29 million. As is the case with Brighton’s New Road, tarmacand concrete have been replaced with granite; continuity instead of curbs.Lamp posts remain though they are now called ‘street lighting masts’,whatever that means (presumably that is where some of the PR budget went).
I visited Exhibition Road during half-term when there were kids aplenty.While it is a huge improvement on the traffic-ridden thoroughfare that Iremember as a child, it is no New Road. While black diagonal lines providerelief from the rather bland grey blocks, it is just not exciting. New Road hasfew cars. Exhibition Road has a constant stream of vehicles, and dozens morein residents’ parking bays. Annoyingly of all, its lamp posts have large raisedbases, in total contradiction of the no-clutter rule.
To be constructive, I would advocate that Exhibition Road should have beenmade one-way and the suggested area for cars should have weaved from sideto side, rather than being straight like a normal road. Each may well haveencouraged more sharing. Admittedly, the speed limit has been lowered to20mph, but this is just not enough.
Shared Space may be attributed to the Dutch traffic engineer HansMonderman who died in 2008. Exhibition Road, as an exhibition for theconcept, needed just that little bit extra to really do his memory [email protected]
A t the beginning of this year, I decided that 2012 was going to be aman-free year. Having had men around, more or less without a breaksince I was 14, I am curious to see if I’ll achieve more without my eye
and mind wandering in the male direction. If nothing else, I’ll save on theair fares to Cuba, where my last boyfriend was based.
OK, you finger-pointers, I know I had a bit of a fall from the man-freewagon almost at the first hurdle during January in New York, but thatdoesn’t count because it was, erm... well, in New York, and what goes ontour stays on tour.
It’s not as if I haven’t got enough on which to concentrate, with theclearing-out and sale of my mum’s house in Stoke-On-Trent to contend with.My dear cousin, who is the executor of my mum’s will, is being snail-paced atgetting things sorted, in spite of being a man in a high-powered job. But then,you know what they say about men and multi-tasking, which I assume alsoapplies to high-powered men. He blames the slow-grinding probate machine.I’m always amazed that lawyers take so long to get stuff done. I often thinkit’s a good job that they don’t work in sandwich bars, or we’d all starve.
Last week, my cousin finally sent me a cheque for the funeralexpenses, which I paid for inOctober. I then used the money topay my overdue tax bill at the end ofJanuary, only to find out that, fivedays later, the cheque had bounced,thus annoying my bank and theInland Revenue in one fell swoop.
All this has made me think thatI’ve been getting a little ahead ofmyself and I’ve decided to take my one bedroom flat off the market, as itwas getting little interest at the price it was on for. Conversely, I had littleinterest in selling it at the price buyers were offering for it, which makesme suspect that it was over-valued initially. I worked out that once I’d soldit for a lower price and paid the Capital Gains Tax on it, it would barely beworth selling. I am now trying to work out how to raise some money inorder to fund the purchase and renovation of another studio flat and havedecided that re-mortgaging could be the way forward. Back in the ’90s, Iwas re-mortgage Queen, so it will be interesting to see if my old lenderswill love me as much in this new, cooler climate.

to only wearing blueeyeliner (black makes melook tired, oh, I am tired),buying a tight Lycra mini skirt and saying“awesome!” way too much.
Thank God I can’t afford ared Porsche. What will mypoor man’s version of amid-life crisis include next?A younger boyfriend? Tick.Got that. He’s 30 and hisfriends are in their 20s. It’sfine, I don’t like talkingabout mortgage rates on anight out anyway...
I guess turning 40 is abig thing for womenbecause our body clock isticking. I’ve had a child butit’s still weird for me to think that a day will come when I physically can’thave children. That I won’t have a choice. I like to have a choice abouteverything in my life, but this is something I have no choice in. And when Istop making these hormones that make me a baby machine, this will start aprocess of real ageing and body change as the wise human body considersme no longer useful to evolution.
Biology is cruel but smart. The other day my five year old asked me howbabies were made. She asked me if it was magic? I don’t know why but I toldher a sweeter version of the truth. That mummies and daddies have a specialcuddle because they love each other so much. And yes, I did the wholeexplanation about all the...bits. “But that is just for adults to do and if anyonetries to do that with you then you must tell Mummy!” Umm, too much? But Iam trying to protect her in this ageless society, where kids grow up too quickand no-one gets old...
I guess I didn’t say it was magic because I want her empowered in amodern world where she hangs out with older kids who might give her theirown version. She already has some strange ideas about Christianity broughthome from the playground. Halfway through my ‘chat’ (sans birds and bees)she put her hand over my mouth: “Stop talking, Mummy.” On her face was anexpression I’d never seen before. It was one of pure embarrassment.
Wait ‘til she sees me doing my running man dance. In my tight Lycra miniskirt, biting my lip about mortgage rates, next to a red Porsche (not actuallyin one, as I still can’t drive and sometimes I struggle to find the cash for abus saver). Luckily, she’s too young to be embarrassed by my “I’m nearly 40”processing. Wait ‘til I’m 50. She’ll be 15. I’ll be having hot flushes (not fromdoing the running man dance, but from hormones), borrowing her clothes;and still saying “awesome”, which, by then, will be the equivalent of saying“wicked”, I imagine. Oh, I still say wicked... “There's some wicked mortgagerates around.” Shush, shush!

S poiler alert. Although it’s not a spoiler for a recent film, and anyway,it’s not one of those big, big endings, like if I’d said Charlton Heston,he’s actually been on Earth all along! Or Bruce Willis – he’s a ghost!
Or Darth Vader turns out to be Luke‘s father (I reckon I must have coveredthat one already in this column.)
Oops. Anyway. The film I was actually intending to give away the endingfor is Signs (2002). Mel Gibson’s kids have odd quirks throughout the film.These seem unconnected until the invasion of aliens when these randomchoices turn out to be useful.
Youngest™ – and to a lesser extent The Boy, when the same age – haveor had a set of quirks and preferences that defy logic. The only explanationmust be it’s all preparation for an incoming extraterrestrial attack. Watchthis space. Or just watch Space.
An additional clue: if you try and divert Youngest™ from one of his quirks, he acts as if it’s life or death.Surely he can’t be exaggerating the importance? Ittherefore must mean incoming aliens.
Let me list some quirks: carrying tiny Lego Harry Potter owls when he goesin the car; clutching twisted foil withimpenetrable strength; alwaysmoving a small chair either sideof the chair he’s sitting in atdinner-time and getting veryannoyed if I try and change seatsmidway through an evening.
The Boy currently isdetermined to puteverything in order offavourites. Previously, heused to hate crossing athreshold – if inside,he hated going outthe front door, andvice versa. Plus, he’dalways want to openthe microwave whenit beeped.
So let’s talk specifics of this alien attack. Perhaps there will be the needto get through doors swiftly to avoid radiation (microwave opening) plusan improvised weapon might need tiny objects to act as makeshift bullets(those plastic owls). When escaping in a rocket, perhaps there’ll be a needto cushion yourself from a side-on pincer attack (those chairs). Youngest™,making sure I don’t sit on a particular armchair, is in anticipation of a laserbeam scorching through the living room window, cushions well and trulyscattered. The Boy’s picking things out in a certain order might possiblyforeshadow a future thrilling bomb disposal moment, and as for the foil,well, it looks like it’s from the future, isn’t that enough?
Just guessing. Alternatively, the aliens may arrive, take one look atYoungest™ with his twisted foil, owls and lined-up chairs and they’ll turn toeach other and say ‘Nope. We’ve done a thousand years of research on thehuman race in order to defeat them – but it’s clearly not enough.’

With effect from 6April 2012, Employment Judges willbe able to sit alone in unfairdismissal cases. The advantage ofthis to the parties and to lawyers isthat the hearings may be muchquicker which in turn will hopefullyhave the effect that people do not

As a lawyer, my view is that it willgradually become the norm for allunfair dismissal cases to be heard byan Employment Judge sitting alone,and I also believe it is likely that oneof the consequences of this will bethat there will be fewer findings ofunfair dismissal.

F ive years go by so fast and it seems like notime since I first went to meet John Hoole athis new office on Dyke Road. Back then the
