City Court September 20, 1862; he was the son of a Methdoist Minister, Andrew Sutherland and Mary (McLeon) Sutherland. Being without funds he worked his way through the Genesee Wesleyan Seminary at Lima, New York, then entered Wesleyan University from which college he was graduated in 1885; he received his Master's Degree in 1888 and his Doctor of Law Degree in 1906; while in col- lege he played on the university football team and was a member of the varsity crew. He was elected to Phi Beta Kappa. After his graduation from Wes- leyan University in 1885 he came to Rochester and began the study of law in the office of his brother, William A. Sutherland. He was admitted to the New York State Bar in 1887; he was appointed Special County Judge of Monroe County in 1893 and in 1894 was elected Monroe County Judge and served in that position until 1906. In 1906 he was elected a justice of the New York Supreme Court and served in the Seventh Judicial District until 1916 at which time he resigned and entered into the practice of law, forming a part- nership with the late Eugene J. Dwyer. John J. Reilly and Andrew R. Sutherland were also associated with the firm and were later ad- mitted to partnership on February I, 1921. On April 1, 1926 Carroll M. Roberts, Charles McLouth Jr. and Samuel B. Dicker became mem- bers of the firm and on January 1, 1929 Arthur E. Sutherland Jr. was admitted to the partnership. The firm continued under the name of Sutherland & Dwyer v/ith Judge Sutherland as the senior partner until February 1, 1933 when it was dissolved by mu- tual consent, and Judge Suther- land formed a partnership with his sons, Andrew R. Sutherland and Arthur E. Sutherland Jr. un- der the firm name of Sutherland & Sutherland, which partnership continued for a period of about three years and until Judge Sutherland was appointed an Offi- cial Referee in the Supreme Court iv which capacity he served until the year 1944, at which time he resigned because of failing health. He was Chairman of the Sev- enth Judicial District Character Committee on the admission of candidates to the Bar, for fifteen years, and resigned in 1932. He was elected president of the New York State Bar Association in 1927, and his services in that posi- tion were so conspicuous and pro- gressive that he was re-elected in 1928 for a second term. He was also a member of the American Ear Association and the Rochester Bar Association. During the first World War he served as Chairman of the Mon- roe County Charter Revision Com- mission; his name was promi- nently mentioned in 1930 as a possible candidate for Governor of «he State of New York on the Re- the Deaf in 1878 when his brother, iWard Sutherland, was a teacher there. City Court

September 20, 1862; he was the son of a Methdoist Minister, Andrew Sutherland and Mary (McLeon) Sutherland. B e i n g without funds he worked his way through the Genesee Wesleyan Seminary at Lima, New York, then entered Wesleyan University from which college he was graduated in 1885; he received his Master's Degree in 1888 and his Doctor of Law Degree in 1906; while in col-lege he played on the university football team and was a member of the varsity crew. He was elected to Phi Beta Kappa.

After his graduation from Wes-leyan University in 1885 he came to Rochester and began the study of law in the office of his brother, William A. Sutherland. He was admitted to the New York State Bar in 1887; he was appointed Special County Judge of Monroe County in 1893 and in 1894 was elected Monroe County Judge and served in that position until 1906.

In 1906 he was elected a justice of the New York Supreme Court and served in the Seventh Judicial District until 1916 at which time he resigned and entered into the practice of law, forming a part-nership with the late Eugene J. Dwyer.

John J. Reilly and Andrew R. Sutherland were also associated with the firm and were later ad-mitted to partnership on February I, 1921.

On April 1, 1926 Carroll M. Roberts, Charles McLouth Jr. and Samuel B. Dicker became mem-bers of the firm and on January 1, 1929 Arthur E. Sutherland Jr. was admitted to the partnership.

The firm continued under the name of Sutherland & Dwyer v/ith Judge Sutherland as the senior partner until February 1, 1933 when it was dissolved by mu-tual consent, and Judge Suther-land formed a partnership with his sons, Andrew R. Sutherland and Arthur E. Sutherland Jr. un-der the firm name of Sutherland & Sutherland, which partnership continued for a period of about three years and until Judge Sutherland was appointed an Offi-cial Referee in the Supreme Court iv which capacity he served until the year 1944, at which time he resigned because of failing health.

He was Chairman of the Sev-enth Judicial District Character Committee on the admission of candidates to the Bar, for fifteen years, and resigned in 1932. He was elected president of the New York State Bar Association in 1927, and his services in that posi-tion were so conspicuous and pro-gressive that he was re-elected in 1928 for a second term. He was also a member of the American Ear Association and the Rochester Bar Association.

During the first World War he served as Chairman of the Mon-roe County Charter Revision Com-mission; his name was promi-nently mentioned in 1930 as a possible candidate for Governor of «he State of New York on the Re-

Many years ago Judge Suther-land spoke at the Memorial Meet-ing of the Rochester Bar Associa-tion upon the life and character of Hon. Peter B. McLennan, a Pre-siding Justice of the Appellate Division, Fourth Deportment and as he rose to speak he said: "Law-yers of Monroe County, a great oak has fallen." How appropriate-ly that same expression might be used in this Memorial.

These Memorials constitute our legal Pantheon, where are em-blazoned the impressive annals of the brethren who have gone be-fore. In this Temple of Remem-brance there are golden nails to hang trophies on. Our records are rich in loving testimony of sur-viving friends concerning the achievements of those lawyers no
