Ever wondered what LiamGallagher thinks of dogs?Well, he loves them, obviously – who wouldn’t?But you might not guessthat the Madchester gnarlyman is particularly fond ofminiature daschunds, andthat his own miniaturedaschund, Roxy, just won‘best in show’ at an event in Hampstead.

Liam is so concerned about the plight ofpuppy farm pooches that he’s signed a guitar, which is going to be auctioned off as part of PupAid 2010 at Stanmer House this month. Thisfundraising event will include such attractions asa dog-themed karaoke contest, Due Southserving canine-friendly food, and Gavin &Stacey’s Joanna Page judging a selection ofclasses, including which dog can stand on itshind legs the longest. No, you’re not tripping onChum, you just live in Brighton.

Events don’t come much more surreal thanthose that led, in 2001, to the biggestbankruptcy scandal of the 21st century. Themarket is not a religion, and believing yourself tobe worth billions of dollars doesn’t make it so.Economics is not magic, and financial sleight ofhand won’t befuddle the world forever. Thesewere the lessons learnt by Enron, whosedownfall is dramatised by Lucy Prebble in hermulti-award winning play. She and Rupert Goolddiscuss its creation in this week’s L7 Interview.

We also chat to David Edgar, who tells us whyIbsen’s The Master Builder has more to offerTwilight fans than you’d think.

Talking of gothic, this week’s Open Door 2010will allow us to snoop round the city’s moreunusual buildings. For spine-tingling atmosphere,we recommend seeing Rohan Kriwaczek playfunerary violin in a Grade II Listed vault.

case your shoe falls off and apretty male has to hand you yourshoe back with an utter grimace atyour chirpy bargain – there bycompletely destroying yourCinderella fantasy.

I really wish I could complainabout the weather, just to really upthe Scottish stereotypes, but itwould appear that summer has

finally reachedthe north. I’veonly beencaught out intorrential rainonce, and eventhen I didn’tmind because Ihad the trustycoat I’d stolenfrom my sistergave me a fewweeks ago. Therest of the time

I’ve been flitting about in dressesand tights and dancing through allthe eager drama students givingout flyers.

The main thing driving meinsane is the canon at Edinburghcastle. Every evening it goes off forsome pathetic tourist attractionand every evening I think the cityis either under siege or thatthunder clouds are overhead. Eitherway, it’s horrifying.

I’ve only got 11 days until I comehome now. That’s still a really longtime. I’m sure feeling sick of it isjust a metaphorical hill I need toclimb over, but as I’m in Edinburghthe hill could be pretty huge.

I’m still in Edinburgh. It’s been 17 days since I first arrived andalready it feels like 17 years...

which would be my entire life. Ican’t remember a point in timewhen I wasn’t here. All mychildhood memories have nowbeen transported to the Royal Mile.I’m beginning to think that haggishas always been part of my day-to-day diet. The onething that makesme sure that Ihaven’t completelyturned into a Scotis that I still don’tunderstand any ofthe taxi drivers.

Edinburgh hasreally started tograte with me. Moreand more I havebegun to missBrighton; my realhometown. Brighton is such aneasier place to be in. Even thoughDitchling Road is a painful stretchof pavement to walk up, it utterlypales in comparison to the mightybeasts of earth that the Scottishpeople call hills.

Within three days of arriving Ihad ruined my shoes and had tobuy a new pair. I went to a charityshop, picked out a nice pair for£4.50 and off I went. I learnt twothings – one being that no matterwhat shoes you wear, theEdinburgh hills will destroy yourlegs. Two – if you buy shoes for£4.50 from a charity shop, don’tleave the price sticker on just in

“Within three days of arriving in Edinburgh I had ruined myshoes and had tobuy a new pair”

William Tells

Dismounting became a pleasant roll.Rolling on was more difficult, as wasspending a pee behind the nearestlunar rock. There were so manylayers to pull down. Forgetting to pullone up could be very painful later on.

There were moments of misery, such as trying to drag a muddysaddle onto a wet horse in the faceof pelting rain and a gale that made

even the animalsstagger sideways. Or,when crossing a riverwhich surged overthe tops of my boots, feeling the cold waterhit my feet. Once wehad to lead ourhorses down narrow, boulder strewn pathswhere it was nearlyimpossible to keepupright. Two or threepeople did stumbleover and there were a

couple of loose horses for a fewworrying minutes.

The Icelandic horses may look likelarger versions of Thelwell ponies butthere the resemblance ends. They areextremely strong, fearless and sure-footed. Best of all they are great fun.

I would certainly do this trek againbut not immediately. I would need afew weeks for my aching back andsore knees to settle down. Strangelyenough, the only bit of me unscathedis my bottom. The Trek has raisedover £44,000 for the Brooke Hospitalfor Animals. That’s got to be worth apainful hip. I am now taking to mybed for the rest of the week.

Ishould like to assure any sponsorsof my Icelandic Trek that it wasdefinitely a Challenge Ride, not a

holiday. Six days of riding, most atsitting trot, was completelyexhausting. Even the ‘tolt’, theIcelandic horse’s smooth pace, canbe like sitting on a pneumatic drill ifcontinued for over half an hour.

The landscape was ever-changingbut always amazing –from majestic, threatening hills andglaciers to white-specked lakes androlling green pastures. The twisted brownrocks of the lava fieldsmade us feel we weretrotting over thesurface of the moon.

We numberedabout twenty ridersand drove a herd ofover 70 horses aheadof us. It was exhilarating to see themplunging ahead, silhouetted againstthe sky line, manes and tailsstreaming in the wind. It was likebeing part of a spaghetti Western.

We changed horses half waythrough the day and it wasimpressive to see how, miles fromanywhere, the wranglers corralledthe herd with a piece of twine, putthe ridden horses back into themelee of circling horses, and pulledanother 20 out.

I was glad I had brought all myfleeces and long johns. When I toppedit all with rubber riding trousers and asou’wester I felt like Michelin man.

Will Harris on life in the middle lane

I have been asked to pose topless in a magazine (not this one, don’t worry). Ofcourse I said yes instantly. After all, I only have a handful of summers leftbefore the sight of my naked flesh straddling a double page spread will have

readers clawing at their faces while screaming, “MY EYES! MY EYES!”But if it’s all downhill from here, I think, the least I can do is get my body to a

decent level from which to begin my descent. So, for the last few weeks I havebeen visiting my local pool three times a week, whereI spend hours thrashing my way through the waterwith the flair and finesse of a school of piranhasfighting over a turkey drummer. True, it’s a great wayto exercise – and, dare I say it, the communalchanging is not without its perks – but for all thosewho assume swimming is a relaxing pastime, youclearly haven’t experienced lane-swimming.

Early mornings and lunchtimes, the pool is neatlysliced into three lanes according to speed. In the left-hand lane, large mammalian bodies float past like lycra-clad logs meanderingdown the bayou, breast-strokes and back-strokes wallowing in harmony. In theright-hand lane, the swimmers cut through the water like goggled missiles, front-crawling and butterflying in ordered procession. Squeezed between these twodistinct cultures is the middle lane. Or, as I like to call it, bedlam.

The culture here, where I choose to swim, is a melting pot of strokes andstyles, from slow-laners with ideas above their station to those like myself,

Do you have a lane-swimming nemesis? Get it off your chest [email protected]

who ought by rights to be inthe fast lane but don’t likethe idea of something bigand wet coming up behindthem (not without a cocktailfirst anyway).

The upshot of this is that allmiddle-laners hate each other. We

hate Mrs Gonzales (Speedy’s wife, doncha know), who calmly back-

strokes her cerise one-piece up anddown the pool, oblivious to the

queue of disgruntled swimming-caps bobbing behind her. We hate the

Black Baron, who wears jet black speedos, goggles and nose-clip, and who delights in plowinginto the rest of us at every opportunity.

And then there is Moriarty, my aquatic arch-enemy and concurrent winner of the Slowest Breast-Stroke in the World Award 1935-2010. Every time I’mstuck behind her, I have to over-take (which usuallytakes me right into the path of the Black Baron andinjury). Old Moriarty then purposely treads water at

the far end of the pool and, just as I’m about to complete my lap, innocentlylaunches herself in front of me again. The other day I got so annoyed at thesesly antics, I thought the fabled red mist had descended. I’m serious. I was all forgoing berserk in the shallow end until I realised it was just the inside of mygoggles fogging up.

L7 News

Iwas saddened to read last weekof the news that Smash EDO areplanning another mass

demonstration in the city in Octoberwith the express intention of closingdown the EDO factory inMoulsecoomb through violent means.

For those of you who have not been followingthis case, back in July eight self-styled‘decomissioners’ who broke into and caused£200,000 worth of criminal damage to the EDOfactory were acquitted of any wrongdoingbecause they were adjudged to have acted with‘lawful excuse’ to prevent further alleged warcrimes being committed by Israel against

We should also remember that significant numbersof local people are employed at the EDO factory –what will happen to them if the protesters aresuccessful in getting it closed down?

I am all for the right to peaceful protest andfreedom of speech but this must be done withinthe law – the minute people break those laws, inmy view they forfeit that right to protest.Effectively giving the green light for people tocause criminal damage whenever they believe it is‘morally justified’ sets a very dangerous precedent.

Palestinians in Gaza. Smash EDO alleges that thefactory makes a particular component of the F-16aircraft which are used by the Israeli air force – a claimdenied by EDO themselves. To add to the controversy, the judge who presided over the case is beinginvestigated by the Office of Judicial Complaints forallegedly making anti-semitic remarks in his summingup which could have swayed the jury in their verdict.

Whatever the rights and wrongs of the Palestiniansituation I believe that this judgment opens up a realPandora ’s Box in terms of the law and how it isupheld in this country. Do Sussex Police now have tomake an operational judgment as to whether anycriminal damage caused at October’s march ismorally justifiable before deciding whether or not tomake arrests?

And then what about the local angle? Policingthese protests has cost local taxpayers somethingin the region of £1million since the campaign beganand the disruption that they bring to the city has amassive impact on residents and local traders alike.

Indie pop band Scouting For Girls say they’reaching all over after cycling 60 miles from London

It was all in aidof Wellchild, with Roy Stride, Greg Churchouse and Pete Ellardleaving London’s Wandsworth Park at 10am on Sunday 29 August, andarriving in Brighton at 4pm on Monday 30 August. They then played anintimate acoustic show at Komedia. “Noone has ever attempted riding Choppersfrom London to Brighton before, so weare over the moon!” said singer RoyStride. “We ache all over, but it was worthevery minute as we have raised over£20,000 for Wellchild. We are now goingto auction the lucky Choppers off forWellchild so get bidding on Ebay. We’renow off to bed for a week to recover!”

Neil is not the only person who has hissights set on East Preston, as Chelsea footballer FrankLampard has also been rumoured to be checking out theproperty pages of the Worthing Herald – as the exclusiveKingston Gorse estate has several houses on the market. You never know, we might even see Frank enjoying a walk

on Worthing Pier with his girlfriend Christine Bleakley. Footballcommentator Des Lynham also lives in the area, so

Frank won’t be short of friendly neighbours.

C hannel 4 pulled out all the stops last week, cramming the final BigBrother with ex-housemates including Brighton boy Samuel Preston. But with a sting in the tale – on a scale only Big Brother provides – he

was faced on his entry to the house by ex-wife and former housemate,Chantelle Houghton.

Since then, all hell has broken loose in the press about whether they aregoing to get back together. Following her divorce from Preston and leavingtheir Brighton home, Chantelle has dated various footballers includingPortsmouth striker Jermain Defoe (who she split with in March this year).

But on entering the house, it was visibly clear that Chantelle wasphysically shaken by coming face to face with her ex. Chantelle has alsospoken of her hopes of the couple being reunited to fellow housemates BrianDowling and Ulrika Jonsson. “Maybe you should try and find out where youstand with him before you put yourself out there,” Brian cautioned. “Don’thope for anything. Hold back a little,” Ulrika added. But their commentsupset the Essex girl as she burst into tears and declared she knew therewas no chance of getting back to together with Preston, 28.

“It wouldn’t happen. It’s been three years. That’s such a long time. I don’tknow. I think Preston loves me but he’s not in love with me,” Chantellesobbed. “It’s almost like we met in Big Brother and we’ll finish in Big Brother.”

Dear Mike,as I child I saw a film ontelevision that made animpression on me that has lastedto this day, but for the life of me Icannot remember its title.

A seminal British movie – aremarkable example both of theBritish ‘New Wave’ and the so-called Kitchen Sink movement –it was directed by the thenyouthful Bryan Forbes to ascreenplay by Keith Waterhouseand Willis Hall, adapted from anovel by Mary Hayley Bell (wifeto the actor John Mills andmother to the child actor HayleyMills, who happens to star in thefilm) and with a sublime scoreby the late, lamented SirMalcolm Arnold.

The plot, so far as I recall, concerns three children growingup on a remote Yorkshire farm whodiscover hiding out in their barn anescaped convict (the charismaticAlan Bates), whom they, in theirnaïveté, mistake for Jesus Christ. This is a much-loved film (in the’90s it was even transformedunsympathetically by AndrewLloyd-Webber into a West-End

11L7 INTERVIEW

LP: God yes, it was insane with ten Fastows and alot of desperate invention.AK: I sensed that in a way you liked the characterSkilling.LP: Err yes, I empathize with him, not sure I likehim – a character I felt a strange connection withwhen I started researching him.RG: Because she’s a tart [laughter].LP: Shut up. No, because things he said hit me.There’s a really unpleasant man who thought hewas doing good when really he was doing bad andI found that fascinating.AK: I sort of liked him at the end because he stuckto what he had set out to do.RG: That’s probably why we bombed in New York, because they wanted to hate him.AK: And he is reasonably moral at the end.LP: Well he sticks to his guns and is consistent. The real Skilling is taking his appeal to theSupreme Court.RG: In this country we like to destroy people. There are huge forces for good, we will destroypeople for small crimes. In Italy they would thinkthat was crazy.LP: Yes, and maybe in Italy they have the mostcorrupt politicians in the world [laughter].

I t’s a humid summer afternoon and Enron hasjust received another ovation. The play startedat Chichester Festival Theatre and, after rave

reviews, went into London where it received furtheracclaim. Logically, a play about an Americanfinancial scandal would then move to Broadway, which it did. Sadly, there it bombed after someparticularly peevish reviews. It then returned toLondon’s West End before embarking on a UK tour, during which it will return to the CFT for one weekonly. After the matinee I met with playwright LucyPrebble and director Rupert Goold.

AK: Neither of you look old enough to havecreated Enron.LP: [laughs] Thank you.AK: Particularly you Lucy.RG: How dare you. [laughter]LP: Yes you’re right.AK: What prompted you to write Enron?LP: Good question, err, back in the early 2000s and I was reading about Enron and I thought whatmakes a company collapse and I didn’t reallyunderstand it, and I’m very interested in things thatI don’t understand. So I spent a lot of timeresearching it and became fascinated by thepersonalities involved, with Kenneth Lay and hisrelationship with Jeffrey Skilling and AndrewFastow, the triangle. And in particular the finalbetrayal of Lay by people who had worshipped him.AK: Was your vision of the play what we see now?It is a very unusual piece of theatre.LP: Spiritually it is what we set out to do but ithas evolved. It was a show about finance but wedidn’t want it to be boring.AK: So you always intended there to be songs anddancing?LP: Originally I conceived it as a musical but itwasn’t a proper musical and Rupert said what if itwas more of a natural play, a tragedy, and thenwe add the songs after.AK: So is the script that you first saw what we seenow, Rupert?RG: It’s a long way from the first script, this is about the 20th version. Every time we have re-done it we have changed something. It’s now10 minutes shorter.AK: Is that through cuts or are they getting slicker?RG & LP: Cuts, cuts yes.RG: It evolved a lot, it felt like maybe three centraldrafting processes before we started rehearsaland Skilling became the central character. Therewas lots of paring down and focusing.

Skilling’s vision is incredibly warped andimpractical and based on something quite falsebut we all love vision.AK: Did he really believe that what he was doingwould work, hiding away the truth about thecompany’s financial structure, or lack of it?LP: Yes, when you speak to people from that worldthey do think that when the profits start to comeeverything will be alright. Then we can pay all themoney back and until then it’s just a matter ofwalking quickly across water until we get to theother side. That happens all the time.RG: American businesses almost expect to gobankrupt and there is no shame in bankruptcy.LP: And risk taking is standard and expected andapplauded.AK: As writer and director you have taken risksas well.RG: Yes, particularly the writer. It’s an act of faithin theatre.LP: I suppose the similarities are quite strong.AK: You have to get people to believe in you andcough up the production costs before they haveseen anything.LP: Absolutely.RG: Yes and the same with audiences for the priceof a ticket.AK: And pay for Rupert?RG: Oh, I’m really cheap [laughter].AK: When, in the process, did you realise thatEnron was going to really work? Was it early on?LP: No.RG: I remember thinking before the rehearsalsthat the script was really good.LP: Oh yes, I remember that [laughter]. I am muchless experienced than Rupert. I didn’t know whatto expect.AK: Were you as writer a part of the rehearsalprocess?LP: Yes but not at the centre of it.RG: That is more common than it used to be.AK: How did it work?RG & LP: [Laughter]AK: You rowed didn’t you?LP: We rowed a lot. In a brother and sister way, inthat he was always wrong and I was always rightand I had to explain to him why he was wrong.AK: She’s tough isn’t she.RG: If you only knew the half of it.

COVER FEATURE 13

E very now and then an event comes along thatis just so Brighton it’s hard to imagine whereelse in the country it would feel at home. And

as another disappointing summer lacking in locallive music festivals in this über-dog-friendly city ofours grinds silently to a halt, it’s no surprise thatPup Aid 2010 has been getting tongues – andtails – wagging for a good while now...

Pup Aid 2010 is the UK’s first-ever charityboutique music festival and celebrity-judged dogshow held at the picturesque Stanmer House inBrighton on Sunday 19 September, and aims toraise awareness about the cruel industry of puppyfarming in the UK.

Puppy farms are located in remote areas of theBritish countryside. They mass-produce sick andunsocialised puppies that are then sold online, from pet shops, free newspapers,or even motorway servicestations – usually dying shortlyafter arriving in their shiny newhomes or perhaps needingthousands of pounds to fix them.

This battery farming of dogs onsuch a massive scale is purelydone for profit and fuelled bygreed – and all at the expense ofthe health and welfare of not justthese poorly pups, but also thethousands of poor breedingbitches and stud-dogs too.

Pup Aid 2010 is aboutchoosing a happy and healthydog by adopting from a rescueshelter or responsible breeder. The festival is the brain-child ofBrighton-based TV Vet MarcAbraham, resident vet on BBC’sBreakfast News, ITV’s ThisMorning, Sky1’s recent My PetShame, and More4’s Crufts.

“Puppy farming has been going on in thiscountry for years with no-one able to stop it,” Marcsays. “By raising awareness as much as possiblewith live music and dog-loving celebrities, we canall help stop the growing demand for these poorlypups and finally end the pain once and for all, thuspreventing the suffering of millions of thiscountry’s dogs right now and well into the future.”

Supported by both Juice FM andBrightonMusicScene.com, the musical line-up onthe day is pretty special, which is no surprise reallywhen you consider Pup Aid 2010 was launched byrock-legend Oasis frontman Liam Gallagher!

‘Champagne Super-Rover’ Liam loves dogs andeven signed a classic Epiphone Casino guitar toshow his support for Pup Aid 2010 (pictured aboveaccompanied by his wife Nicole Appleton, TV VetMarc, and their dachshund ‘Ruby Tuesday’ atGibson Guitars in London last month).

The guitar has since been autographed by morerock legends, including the ‘Modfather’ himself:Paul Weller and Mick Jones from The Clash. Theguitar will be auctioned on the day to raise fundsfor Dogs Trust Shoreham, Kennel Club CharitableTrust and Oldies Club – a small charity dedicated tothe re-homing of older unwanted dogs.

Pup Aid 2010 is a fun day out for every member ofthe family – especially the four-legged ones – withgames, raffles and prizes galore. Dog-lovingcelebrities judging on the day include soapstars, actors, models and designers, with overwhelming

support from all yourfavourite Brightonboutique brandsincluding TreatmentRooms, Gresham Blake, and The Ginger Dog.

With the ever-popular Scruffts heats(Handsomest Dog,Prettiest Bitch, Child’sBest Friend and GoldenOldie) giving cross-bredmongrels the chance togo through to the grandScruffts final at EarlsCourt in November, otherfun classes include MostGlamorous Six Legs(owner and dog) as well

as Best Stand-up – the dog who can stand-up ontheir hind-legs the longest, judged by Brighton’stop stand-up comedians!

Part of September’s mouth-watering Brighton & Hove Food Festival, Pup Aid 2010 caters for allpalates as gourmet chefs from Due South preparehealthy and locally-sourced tasty treats for youand your pooch to chow down on.

For those of you that want to practise yoursinging, there’s dog-themed Karaoke with the topthree singers going through to the live Rex Factorfinal on the main stage in front of a panel of celebjudges! As well as the moving parade of rescuedex-breeding bitches, there’ll also be excitingdisplays by Canine Partners and rare British dogbreeds, as well as free training advice, microchipping and have-a-go agility.

With so many people still unaware that puppyfarming even exists, prospective puppy-buyerssadly don’t know how to spot the tell-tale signs ofwhen someone is trying to sell a puppy producedin such a cruel way, so check out the Choosing aPuppy tips (right).

Checklist forChoosing a Puppy1 Consider checking out the Dogs Trust

and Kennel Club Breed Rescue Directory.

2 Always contact the Kennel Club first fortheir list of reliable and reputable KennelClub Accredited Breeders if you’reconsidering buying a pedigree dog.

3 Always do your research into breed, temperament, training and exercise needs,coat-type, size and life expectancy.

4 Never buy because you ‘feel sorry’ for the pup – its mother and father are stillsuffering and will be used again to fill thespace you’ve just created.

5 Never buy from a pet shop, online or free newspaper ad.

6 Always ask to see the puppy interactingwith its mother.

7 Beware of puppy scams: there should beno excuse why the mother isn’t there.

8 Be wary of multi-breed dealers. Manypuppy farms and dealers will have morethan one breed for sale.

9 Beware of dealers/sellers who won’t take the pup back if any problems arise.

10 Be prepared to wait and be put on awaiting list. Don’t buy on impulse – a well-bred pup will be happier andhealthier in the long term.

11 Walk away if it doesn’t feel right – a responsible breeder will never pressure you into buying a pup.

12 Be prepared to be asked as manyquestions as you’ll ask the breeder – a responsible breeder won’t sell tosomeone who’s not suited to their breed.

13 Listen to advice from responsible breeders– they are experts for that particular breed.

14 Support Pup Aid 2010 to raise awarenessabout puppy farming and encouragingadopting from rescue and buying puppiesfrom responsible breeders.

The Sussex Farmer of the Year shortlist JENNY AND TREVOR PASSMOREChurch Farm, Coombes, Lancing, West Sussex, BN15 0RSChurch Farm has been in the Passmore family for four generations. Jenny andTrevor are brother and sister; their mother, Mary, now aged 90, still helps outaround the house; their father, Dick, was awarded an MBE for his work ineducation and conservation in the rural community. Jenny’s son Andrew is offto Plumpton College in September and hopes to become the fifth generation ofthe Passmore family to run Church Farm in future years. Church Farm is notorganic but is farm assured and is classified an Environmentally SensitiveArea (ESA). They farm sheep, cattle, and arable land. It is still a working farmbut is open to the public and averages 10,000 visitors a year.

What do you like about being a farmer?Church Farm is a family run farm. We love the variety and tradition of farminglife, the seasonality of it from lambing season – we have 800 ewes who lambevery season. I can’t imagine being anything but a farmer!

What makes you different from other farmers? We have been open to the public since 1979. We promote conservation of thecountryside and farming and, in addition to the farm, we also have lakes forcoarse fishing. We hold a beer festival called Glastonwick every June and arealso licensed for weddings. We received a DEFRA grant to renovate one of thebarns as an education centre and have veterinary students on the farm forthe lambing season to help with training. We also have, through the NFU,groups from China studying how ‘real working farms’ operate.

What’s great about Sussex? The South Downs, Sussex cattle and sheep.

TIM HASSELL Home Farm, Goodwood, Chichester, PO18 0QFTim was born in Sheffield near the steelworks and was brought up in a familywho worked in the steel industry. But living near a farm as a child and havinga love of agriculture and rural life from an early age, Tim went to AgriculturalCollege rather than the steelworks! He started his working life on a YouthTraining Scheme (YTS) at a farm in Burton, moving around the country to gainexperience. He has lived in Tamworth, near Gloucester, Newcastle, thenBasingstoke where he worked in his first organic farm. He moved in October2009 with his wife and two children, aged 9 and 13, to take over as farmgeneral manager at Goodwood. Tim now has 13 staff working for him.

Why be a farmer?I love the outdoor life, rearing animals, seeing the chain all the way through, make our own cheese and produce and rearing our own meat on theGoodwood Estate. I really like to just concentrate on farming.

What makes you different from other farmers?I want to make the most of the local environment. One reason I was attractedto working at Goodwood is being open to new ideas – as is the estatemanagement generally.

What’s great about Sussex?I like the way people are open to and appreciate local produce. I also like thetourist industry in Sussex and how it crosses over between urban and rural.

SHON AND SIMON SPRACKLING FROM ROTHER VALLEY ORGANICSRother Valley Organics, Sandilands Farm, Rogate, Petersfield, West Sussex, GU31 5HUShon and his brother, Simon, manage a commercial farm of over 4000 acres, with a large butcher’s selling meat directly to customers, through farmersmarkets and to local shops. Shon gives talks to various organisations aboutlocal produce and the story behind Rother Valley Organics, which is renownedfor its excellent animal welfare and good husbandry. He works with otherlocal producers putting meat into their products, including the local breweryfor beef and ale pies. Their butchering and cold store is the largest in the areaand many other local producers use it to get their meat to market.

LYN AND JENNY JENNER Nut Knowle Farm, Worlds End, Gun Hill, Horam, East Sussex, TN21 0LABorn in Brighton Lyn worked as a silversmith in the North Lanes for around15 years. As a silversmith, he had dogs at home to safeguard the jewellery.“The dogs used to bark like mad when the milkman delivered, which drove theneighbours nuts” he says. “A friend suggested we get a goat so we would nolonger need a milkman and it all just grew from there.” They have now been

farming goats since 1979 and now have over 650. They also became the firstfarm to use goats and produce goats cheese.

What do you like about being a farmer?Everything. We now have 14 staff involved in looking after the herd andmaking cheese. Between them we do around 100 farmers markets per monthand sell to six wholesalers and to Waitrose.

What makes you different from other farmers? We are currently expanding and plan to double the herd in the next three tofour years. We have 150 to 200 kids every year, and the herdsman knowseach goat by name and number. We have a system of naming them all by adifferent letter of the alphabet every year so the name of every kid born in2008 begins with A, 2009 B, 2010 C etc. We have just built a new rotarymilking parlour, upgrading and doubling the milk and cheese manufacturingequipment as the herd grows. We also like to promote the health benefits ofgoats cheese.

What’s great about Sussex? The contrast between the country and the sea; the rolling Sussexcountryside, then driving down to the coast and walking along the undercliffpass from Rottingdean. And the weather is wonderful!

STUART BEARETulleys Farm, Turners Hill Road, Turners Hill, Crawley, RH10 4PETulleys Farm has been in the Beare family for 73 years, initially as tenants, then since 1991 as owners. It started as a PYO fruit and veg business, thenopened a farm shop, tea room and themed maize mazes in the ‘90s. SinceEaster 2010 have their own butchery dept in the farm shop and country giftdept showcasing local crafts people. Their Halloween festival is now thebiggest in the country; during the day aimed at kids and known as Octoberfest, haunted house, spooky trails, pumpkins, catapults, corn cannons etc, in theevening becomes Shocktoberfest Scream Park with haunted high rides, field ofscreams, cellar haunted house, curtains and a spooky maze.

What do you like about being a farmer?Growing and promoting local produce; seasonality of farming – pumpkins inOctober, Christmas trees in December, maize in Summer, and crop rotation.

What makes you different from other farmers?Primarily our PYO fields; they are still a very important part of our business. We are also crop rather than animal farmers. We are a part of the FarmRetail Group.

What’s great about Sussex? The people are great; the diversity of the county; the contrast between rural, urban and coastal locations. Good infrastructure making for easy accessacross most parts of the county.

STAGE20

in his later life found himself attracted to energetic young women. It’s heldthat one of them was the original for Hilda in The Master Builder. And in the19th century people certainly realised that climbing up a large tower hascertain Freudian implications...

Tell us about the gothic element in The Master Builder...I’m interested in the fact Ibsen is also writing in the period of the late VictorianGothic. He writes The Master Builder in 1892. The Picture Of Dorian Gray iswritten a year earlier, when Sherlock Holmes also bursts onto the scene. AndJekyll and Hyde is 1886. The idea of the Gothic is quite present in The MasterBuilder. They talk about being possessed by creatures. They call them ‘trolls’,which I think nowadays you associate with small dolls with purple hair, so I’vechanged it to ‘creatures of the night’. These trolls don’t like the daylight, theycan change shape, they don’t like Christian imagery, and they like to eathuman flesh. Now what does that remind you of? Although Dracula isn’twritten for another seven years, it seems to me that trolls are vampiric, and Iwant people to make that association. In rehearsals we’ve worked to makesure that gothic symbolism walks hand in hand with psychological realism. The Master Builder is at the Minerva Theatre, Chichester Festival Theatre, from9 September to 9 October, £21.50–27.50, www.cft.org.uk, 01243 781312

Gothic revivalFollowing his acclaimed Nicholas Nickleby,David Edgar returns to the CFT with a newtranslation of Ibsen’s The Master Builder. Hechats to Bella Todd about anticipating Dracula

Why do we need a new translation of The Master Builder?Translations date. I think you do a sort of deal – the more vivid you make it,the more immediate, the more it is going to feel out of date in 20 years time.So I think it’s almost true that the better a translation, the shorter it will last.Your real responsibility is to try and give the contemporary audience theexperience that the original author intended. We’ve made it two rather thanthree acts. This isn’t at all to say that modern audiences can’t deal with longnights at the theatre. But what I do hope is that people will come out and justcheck their programmes to make absolutely sure that this is a play aboutIbsen. It will be a brisk evening and feel as lively and vivid as Ibsen intended.

What have been the particular problems, or joys, with translating Ibsen? It’s the first time I’ve done it, and I should make clear that I’ve done it with thehelp of a literal translation, which is very common these days. You want toclean the play so that the colours show brightly, and that often meanschanging it a bit, using contemporary dramatic techniques. Irony is anexample. We say the opposite of what we mean much more often than the lateVictorians. And if you want to present someone being sassy and witty, that’squite a good technique.

Did you have a say in the casting?Michael Pennington is the Master Builder – that was the deal for me. My firstbig success was a play called Destiny, which is about the National Front.Michael played a large part in it and was brilliant. I’ve continued to admirehim, both his acting and his mind. And Philip Franks directed NicholasNickleby, so it's wonderful to be working with him again.

The Master Builder is more surreal, symbolic, meditative – you can verymuch sense that it’s one of Ibsen’s later plays...The funny thing about Ibsen is he wrote all his great middle-period plays, which are about gloomy people in terrible marriages in a very cold northerncountry, while living in the Bay of Naples. In fact, I’ve stayed in the hotel inSorrento in which he wrote Ghosts, this lovely Mediterranean hotel, and he satthere writing a play about syphilis! However, at the end of his life he wentback to Norway, and started writing about old men whose powers are waningbeing reinvigorated by young women from their past. Like Bernard Shaw, Ibsen

Laura Marling leads thelineup at Foxtrot, the secondall-day nu-folk event to beheld in the sumptuousStanmer House

CARE TODANCE?

F ollowing on from the success of lastyear’s event, Brighton’s folk collective,Wilkommen Records, and promoters

Melting Vinyl have organised a bigger andbetter follow-up in Foxtrot – again set in andaround the stately home and Grade I listedStanmer House.“Marcus [of Wilkommen]wanted to have a flagship festival for hislabel,” says Melting Vinyl’s Anna Moulson.“They saw the work we were doing and feltthere was a kindred spirit in Melting Vinyl.”

Having grown from a loose collective of like-minded souls gathering in people’s houses totalk and share music, the Wilkommen Collectivehas rapidly expanded to encompass a cutting-edge label specialising in leftfield nu-folkmusic.Headlining the 400 capacity event thisyear is Laura Marling, a folk star in the making.Only 20 years old, she has already releasedtwo commercially successful and criticallyacclaimed albums in Alas I Cannot Swim and ISpeak Because I Can, both of whom have beennominated for the Mercury Music Prize.

“Marcus got in touch about Laura – shewanted to play a smaller event with her friendsand with less pressure than he hasexperienced over the last year or so,” saysAnna.

There will also be a range of artists fromthe Collective and its extended family at thisall-day event, including a rare performancefrom Shoreline and the first full set fromWilkommen’s very own super group, TheClimbers (which features Nick Hemmings andChristian Hardy from The Leisure Society).

Also on the bill is the orchestral pop of TheMiserable Rich, the beautiful traditional folk ofMary Hampton, the psychedelic folk of Sons ofNoel And Adrian, Kristin McClement, Rozi Plain,The Mariner’s Children, Francois & The AtlasMountains, Rayon Breed and Rowan Coupland.

“There’s a fresh and new vibe about thefestival,” says Anna. “It’s very Sussex-basedwith a few Melting Vinyl type artists such asRayon Breed (ex-The Wellingtons), who arelike a folkier version of The Half Sisters.

“This year’s is a bigger event than last year –we’ve got a marquee out in the garden as wellas The Henry Pelham Room and another bar.And we’ve got The Big Lemon Bus to take peopleto and from the site. It can be a very lonely roadwalking through the park at night!

“We want the festival to gradually grow. I’veseen so many festivals that are trying too hardto be big too quickly. This is a more word-of-mouth event... And I just love Stanmer House!”Foxtrot, 12 September, Stanmer House, Falmer

ROY ‘CHUBBY’ BROWN

Love him or hate him, most havean opinion on Royston Vasey, akaRoy ‘Chubby’ Brown. That would

be how he took 62nd place in Channel4’s The 100 Greatest Stand-Ups earlierthis year, beating the likes of TimMinchin, Ken Dodd, Bill Cosby andJason Manford in the race to the top.

But that, and the BBC’s 2007documentary – Roy Chubby Brown:Britain’s Rudest Comedian – is prettymuch all many know about the adultcomedian, as his material is deemedtoo rude for television. Well, here heis in Worthing.

His calling cards are his bluematerial, old-style gags anddismissal of the politically correct.Offensive to many, traditional to

follow me on twitter latestvicky

others, it mixes in comic songs, funny walks and audience abusefrom the old school of BernardManning, Jethro and Jim Davidson.

Built on the premise of writing onenew joke every day, this adult showfrom the colourful flying helmet-wearerpromises to be controversial andoccasionally topical – although not in aMark Thomas way. His views onasylum seekers are unlikely to matchany Guardian-reader’s.

Brown is loud and proud, obnoxiousand happy with it, offering a changeand contrast to the regular comedyclub circuit here in the South.Remember, though, heckle at your ownrisk. This ain’t no Southern softie.Roy ‘Chubby’ Brown: Live In Concert,Pavilion Theatre, Worthing, Thursday 9September, 7.30pm, £19

THE JOLLY BOYSBefore reggae and ska there wasmento and The Jolly Boys have been playing it for over 60 years.Probably the oldest performers tograce the Coalition stage, thesnappily dressed septuagenarians, dubbed the Jamaican Buena VistaSocial Club, were here to promotetheir new covers album. Most of thesongs suited their laid back calypsostyle, with ‘Rehab’ and ‘Ring Of Fire’standing out. Both ‘Powda’ Bennett,73, and Albert Minott, 72, weresurprisingly sprightly and ‘Johnny’Henry, 71, sat sage-like as heplayed his sitting bass rumba box. Agreat show from a group who havemore than paid their dues.Coalition, 31 AugustJJJJJ

BEIRUT“Welcome to Eastbourne”, said ZachCordon with a sideways smile.Beirut's wistful brass fitted in wellwith the period grandeur ofEastbourne’s Winter Gardenstheatre. Most of the audience weredrawn from outside town – and withonly two UK shows this year fromthe band, it was certainly worth the

trip. Performing a set that elevatedmariachi, European folk and funeralmarching bands, this big show waslong-sold out and feverishly well-recieved. Cordon’s rich baritone led Beirut’s bittersweet, merrily swaying parade through awonderful cacophony of horns, conjuring up the kind of adulationreserved for revolutionary policticalrallies. A remarkable show in a trulyclassy joint.Winter Gardens, Eastbourne, 27 AugustJJJJJ

THE CHORDSThe mod revivalists emerged from thestage smoke only a silhouette of theirformer selves. Hailing from London,The Chords lived up to their deafeningreputation but with little flair. Thevocals were coarse and off-key. Their instruments, althoughsometimes tolerable, mostly grated inharmoniously. FrontmanBilly Hassett appeared warm andenergetic, but intermittently battledwith the sound engineer who failed toreduce the level of feedback spewingfrom the microphones. CLUB SMOOCH: SUMMER HEAT WAVEYou certainly get your money'sworth with Club Smooch. A sultryand steamy Latin American themedburlesque night, it sashayed its waythrough some sizzling songs, female burlesque of all sizes andsome very funny and tongue-in-cheek ‘male’ burlesque. The hostingwas rough around the edges butthat was part of its charm, althoughif polished up the evening wouldflow much better. Special mentionfor the wonderfully inventive ‘Chav-up’ burlesque dance of Miss

Direction and the sensuous LibertySweet’s clever dress down – plus thesurprising appearance of a greattrapeze act by Miss Kitty Peels. Thevenue was fit to bursting, as weresome of the audience due to theiraptly themed attire.Komedia, 27 AugustJJJJJ

THE ALL NEW ORIGINAL TRIBUTETO THE BLUES BROTHERSA construct inspired by the classic’80s film, this tribute is less atheatre piece, more a floor-stompingly enjoyable cabaret night.A delightful cast with voices pickedto suit the songs selected by theoriginal duo, as well as a strongsupport from a trio of belting soulfemale singers, made for a funnight all the family came along toenjoy. The only weak momentscame when the ensemble ofperformers, plus the live band onstage, fragmented. Some soloperformances without the supportof the others showed the barebones of a performer’s limitations. For the most part, though, no onecared, as the audience danced inthe aisles, singing the virtues of‘Sweet Home Chicago’, and feelingthe joy of the party.Theatre Royal, 31 AugustJJJJJ
