The Landlady Building Opinions
Iam still in Norfolk trying to write my book and, over the course of the pasttwo days, I have realised that I am absolutely brilliant at something. Thatsomething is, alas, not writing, but procrastination. It is already midday and
I’ve only written 423 words which, I have to admit, is 422 words more than Iwrote yesterday before midday. However, in spite of a slow start and muchmessing about, I managed over 6,000 words yesterday and am hoping for thesame today, leaving only a mere 20,000 to go.
When I awoke at 9am this morning, it was hailing so hard that it looked likesomeone was throwing buckets of ice at the windows of the shack I’m stayingin. I made a cup of tea and sat and watched the storm, while worrying slightlythat the sea, which was sending foam over the cliff top, might come and sweepme away before I’d started writing. I wrote a bit, then in a moment of distraction,I made a film of the storm with my camera, because it was such spectacularweather. As a treat, I might email it to The Boyfriend later to show him how muchI’m suffering for my art.
In a break in the hailstorms, I quickly got dressed and went running –inland – as a beach run would have been rather challenging, not to mentioninsane, in this weather. Ipassed through the villageon the way back and spent10 minutes chatting to thewoman in the chemist whilepurchasing nail varnish, thenbought a dressed crab, oneof the last of the season –from the woman in the pubcar park, with whom I alsounnecessarily shot thebreeze. Or in this case, galeforce wind.

The local shop had apromotion where one could purchasethree ready-made Mojitos in a can for£3.50, so I bought three Mojitos and,as something of an afterthought, twosachets of Horlicks. I think I might begoing mad. The Small Daughter toldme on the phone last night, thatpeople who spend too much time on their own go mad, then die. Charming. Thereis method in the madness though, because my book is all about South America,so I’ve been playing loud Latino music while I’ve been writing and the threeMojitos can only help things along further, although I’m not allowing myself todrink them until after 6.30pm, as they may well lubricate my talent forprocrastination, rather than writing.
Later, I plan to go and use the internet in the local pub, where I am sure, justlike last night, the locals will stare at me and whisper, possibly viewing me as aslightly insane stranger...They don’t know how right they are.
The Landlady finds method in the madness
Iwrote in this very column,nearly eight years ago,how three different
consortiums had respondedto a brief that had been setby Brighton & Hove CityCouncil for a new sportscentre on the King Alfred site.
The history of the KingAlfred is well rehearsed.Hove Marina was completedin 1939 as a replacement forthe Medina Baths but wasimmediately requisitioned bythe Navy and renamed HMS King Alfred.22,500 officers from all over the empire weretrained there during the Second World Warincluding my own great-uncle, Robert Millar. Itre-opened as the King Alfred in 1946.
The first pool was located within theconfines of the main building but wasreplaced when a large extension with flumeswas added to the south during the 1980s. Theoriginal is said to still be in place beneath asports court. The major changes that weremade back then were a sure signthat the building was on its lastlegs even then.
The situation now issomewhat different to that of2004 in that developers andcampaigners are calling onBrighton & Hove City Council tomake a plan – rather than thecouncil making a plan and imposing it.
I am hugely keen to see a brand new sports centre on the site and would liketo assure all readers that the figures stack up easily. The £30 million that mightbe required to build it could easily be provided by a quality residentialdevelopment on the site. Excuses about finances are only ideological in natureso should be challenged.
The current building only occupies around one third of the overall site. To thewest is an abandoned underground bowling alley alongside a make-shift carpark. To the east is a hard-standing for trampolines and various other tackyadditions. There is so much scope for radical improvement.
I am aware of at least five developers – including Centurion Group, Rob Starrand Totem – with entirely different visions for the site. Now is the time to lobbythe council to admit that it can be done so that a grand competition can be heldonce again to get a new sports centre in place for the whole city.
