CHRISTMAS PARTIES 07 Breeze Once again Andrew Kay extols the virtues of this North Laine eatery: The food is stylish modern European but not in heart-warming portions. The restaurant itself is on two levels and is stylishly decorated and comfortable and the service is second to none, totally charming and helpful. The chef’s Asian origins show through too in some of his cleverly spiced dishes but he is equally at home making British classics. Their Christmas menu at £24.95 for three courses includes starters of soya-marinade scallop with celeriac puree, pancetta and chilli and lemon oil and a warm peach and frisée salad with goat’s cheese and balsamic vinegar. Main courses include the traditional roast turkey with chestnut and sage stuffing, duck fat potatoes and honey-roasted winter vegetables and a pea and mint risotto cake, asparagus, creamy chestnut mushroom, broad beans and truffle oil (v). And who can resist finishing off with Christmas pudding with brandy custard or a selection of cheese, grapes with pear chutney? And that’s just a taster of the food on offer. Booking is bound to be essential... Breeze, 98 Trafalgar Street, Brighton BN1 4ER, 01273 693377, [email protected], www.breezebrighton.co.uk The Coal Shed Restaurant At The Coal Shed they have a simple plan: to produce the best grilled meat and fish restaurant on the south coast. They believe the simple way is the best way – cooking good quality, local, sustainable, ingredients over real charcoal. While steak and fish are their signature dishes, they also have a selection of other cuts of meat, vegetarian dishes and a children’s menu. Not only have they found a local farmer who breeds the best cattle for steaks, the longhorn, but also one who prides themselves on producing the finest quality, ethically reared, environmentally sustainable meat. All the steaks have been dry aged and hung for at least 35 days, enhancing the flavour and making them even more succulent. Coal Shed specialises in a variety of cuts of meat from rump, rib eye and fillets to bigger cuts to share such as the bone-in-rib and porterhouse steaks. The private dinning room will be open from the end of October, which will hold up to 20 people. This can be booked at no extra charge and bespoke menus can be created to fit your needs. Coal Shed is open seven days a week, Monday to Sunday 12pm–4pm, Sunday to Thursday 6–10pm, Friday and Saturday 6pm–10.30pm. They also offer a specialised lunch menu with two courses for £12 Monday to Friday. The Christmas menu will be available from the beginning of November, costing £34.95 for three courses.
