TheGeri-Fit®CompanyhasbeenofferingseniorfitnessprogrammingthroughouttheUnitedStatesforover25years.Itwasoneoftheveryfirstexerciseprogramsforolderadultsthatconcentratedonbuildingstrengththroughtheuseofdumbbellweights.IthasbeenthesubjectofstudiesperformedbytheClevelandClinicFoundation,MetroHealthGeneralHospital,theUniversityofTexasArlington,andothers.
In2013,theGeri-Fit®programunderwentareviewprocessconductedbytheAdministrationforCommunityLivingandtheAdministrationonAginganditwasdeterminedthattheprogrammetthehighestcriteria(tierlevelIII)asanevidence-basedhealthpromotion/diseasepreventionprogrammakingiteligibleforTitleIIIDOlderAmericans’Actfederalfunding.In2018,theGeri-Fitprogramalsometthecriteriaasanongoingphysicalactivitysupportprogramforchronicdiseaseself-management.
Today,theGeri-Fit®programisofferedatnearly275locationswithplanstoexpandtheprogramtoothercountriesoverthenextdecade.ThecompanyalsoprovidesaccreditedcontinuededucationtrainingprogramsforlayleadersandfamilycaregiversaswellasaretaillineofDVDsandotherolderadultproducts.

Introduction: How and Why Geri-Fit® Came to the Library
Publiclibrariesincreasinglyjoinfaith-basedinstitutionsascommunity-basedvenuesforactiveliving.AccordingtopublichealthscholarsattheUniversityofPennsylvania,66%ofPennsylvanialibrariessupportpatrons’interestinexercise.PubliclibrariesareamongthemosttrustedinstitutionsinU.S.societyandgerontologistsrecognizethemasideallocationsfor“peer-basedstrategiestosupportphysicalactivityforolderadults.”
TheGeri-Fit®attheLibrarystudyrepresentsthefirst-evernation-widestudyofaphysicalactivityinterventioninpubliclibraries.PastcasestudieshaveexaminedtheeffectsoftrainingpubliclibrariansinSouthwesternOntariotoleadaMove2Learnprogram,circulatingpedometersinpubliclibraries,andincludingrurallibrariesinthedevelopmentofphysicalactivitypromotioncoalitions.Inaddition,paststudieshaveshownthatpubliclibrariesareincreasinglyinterestedinworkingwithpartnerstoofferexerciseopportunitiesforolderadults,andthatinfactaboutonequarterofU.S.publiclibrariesnowofferfitnessclasses.
TheGeri-Fit®attheLibrarystudyaddstothisevidencebasebyshowingthatpubliclibraries,insmallandruralcommunitiesinparticular,haveincrediblevaluetophysicalactivityandhealthpromotionefforts,particularlyamongolderadults.535olderadultstookpartina12-weekGeri-Fit®video-ledgroupstrengthtrainingprogramconsistingof24classesconductedtwiceaweekfromJanuary-April2019.Theythenfilledoutasurveywhichaskedquestionsregardingtheimpactsoftheprogram.49smallandruralpubliclibrariesparticipatedinthisstudy.ApproximatelyhalfoftheparticipatinglibrariescompletedaGeri-Fit®coachtrainingprogramandcontinuetooffertheprogramattheirlibraries.OtherlibrarieshavesincejoinedtheminofferingfreeGeri-Fit®atthelibraryprograms.

Geri-Fit® at the Library Supports Healthy Aging Across Mind and Body
Nationwidestudyofsmallandruralcommunitiesshowsolderadultsconsistentlycometofreestrengthtrainingclassesofferedinpubliclibraries.
SociologistEricKlinenbergdescribespubliclibrariesassocialinfrastructure,wherepeopleofallagescancometogetherandbuildcommunity.OneexampleheusestoillustratethisphenomenonistheLibraryLanesBowlingLeagueofferedattheBrooklynPublicLibrary,whereolderadultsgathertogethertobowlatthelibraryusingXboxConnect.Theideaofpubliclibrariesasspaceswherepeopleaccesseachotherisnowanestablishedpartoftheprofession.
“Itwasasocialtimeaswellasphysicalexercisetime.Weallneedeachotheraswellas
physicaltimeforourbodies!”–ParticipantfromUnion,IA
TheGeri-Fit®attheLibrarystudyalsorevealedthatolderadultsgatheringtogetheratthelibrarytoexercisehadhealthbenefitsthattranscendtheindividual.Aseriesofquestionsaboutparticipants’moodandwell-beingrevealed:
• 93%ofparticipantsaffirmedthatGeri-Fit®attheLibraryhelpedlifttheirspiritsorputtheminabettermood.
• 77%ofparticipantsaffirmedthattheirgeneralizedwell-beingwasbetteraftertheprogram.• 51%ofparticipantsstatedthat,sincetheystartedGeri-Fit®,theiroverallhealthhadgotten
better.
Thesefindingsconfirmthatharnessingthepowerofpubliclibrariesforhealthcanproductivelyfocusongroupdynamics,buildinghealthyagingacrossmindandbodyatthecommunitylevel.
Participant survey responses provided indicators that the Geri-Fit program improved mental and emotional health, as well as physical health. %ofsurveyrespondentsstatingthattheir______________improvedoverthecourseofthe12-weekGeri-Fitprogramofferedbytheirpubliclibrary.

1. Overall Benefits: Strength, Well Being, More Active and Balanced
Unsurprisingly,giventhattheGeri-Fit®programfocusesonstrengthtraining,themostfrequentlyreportedpositiveimpactoftheprogramwasonoverallstrength.Fully78%ofthe535participantsreportedthattheir“overallstrength”hadgottenbettersincetheystartedGeri-Fit.
Inadditiontoimprovedstrength,participantsreportedmanyotherfacetsoftheirhealthgettingbettersincetheystartedGeri-Fit®attheLibrary:
• 77%reportedtheirgeneralizedwell-beinghadgottenbetter.
• 63%reportedtheiroverallphysicalactivitylevelshadgottenbetter.
• 61%reportedtheirbalancehadgottenbetter.
Furthermore,amajorityofparticipantsreportedimprovementstotheirabilitytostandupwithoutassistance,totheiroverallenergylevels,andtotheiroverallhealth.Lessthan50%reportedbenefitstotheirabilitytowalkupanddownstairsandtowalkwithoutassistance,butitisimportanttonotethatitispossiblethatmanyparticipantscouldalreadydothesetaskswitheasebeforebeginningtheprogram,andthustheremayhavebeenlimitedroomforimprovement.

Theseopen-endedresponsesweresystematicallycoded,andconfirmedandaddedtexturetothefindingsfromtherestofthesurvey.Inopen-endedresponses:
• 28%saidthesocialactivitywasakeybenefitoftheprogram.
• 23%reportedimprovedstrength.
• 16%reportedimprovedmobility.
• 12%reportedimprovedattitudeorgeneralizedwell-being.
• 11%reportedimprovedbalanceandcoordination.
ThesefindingsconfirmthatthebenefitsofGeri-Fit®attheLibrarytranscendthebodiesoftheindividuals.Thisprogrambenefitedminds,andcontributedtoacultureofhealthy,activeaginginthesmallandruralcommunitieswheretheprogramtookplace.
Participants responded to an open-ended question regarding additional benefits of the Geri-Fit program, wherein several indicated that social activity was a primary benefit of the program. %ofopen-endedquestionrespondentsindicatedthattheyconsidered_________________tobeabeneficialaspectoftheGeri-Fit®programattheirlibrary.

Despitesomeextremelybadweather–JanuaryandFebruary2019hadsomeofthecoldestweatheronrecordinpartsoftheMidwesternUnitedStates–-amajorityofparticipantsattendednearlyalloftheclasses:

Inadditiontostrongattendance,amajorityofparticipantsalsoreportedmakingupanymissedclassesathome,usinghandoutsprovidedatthebeginningoftheprogram.55%ofthosethatdidnotattendall24classesreportedthattheydidmakeupanyclassesmissed,while45%reportedthattheydidnot.
Afinalsignofthesustainabilityoftheprogramcomesfromtheresponsetothequestion“WouldyourecommendtheGeri-Fit®programtoyourfamilyandfriends?”Fully,97%ofparticipantssaidthattheywould.Overall,avastmajority(85%)alsoreportedplanningoncontinuingwithGeri-Fit®attheLibrary,ifthelibrarieschosetocontinueofferingtheclasses.Amongtheveryfew(n=37)whosaidtheywouldnotcontinuewiththeprogram,reasonsofferedincluded:toobusyoraschedulingconflict(13),andseasonal(theyprefertobeoutsidewhenitiswarm)(12).
Theresultsofthisstudydemonstratethatpubliclibrarieshavegreatpotentialaspartnersineffortstoincreasehealthy,activelivingamongAmericans.Additionalresearchonactivelivinginterventionsandpartnershipsinvolvingpubliclibrariesisneeded.Americahasover16,000publiclibraries,representingavastinfrastructurethatneedstobebetterincludedinactivelivingpolicyandpractice.

UsingU.S.Censusdata,thecommunitiesthatparticipatedwereorganizedintofourcategories:VerySmall(VS)–servesapopulationoflessthan1,000residents,Small(S)–servesapopulationbetween1,000and5,000residents,Medium(M)–servesapopulationbetween5,000and10,000residents,andLarge(L)–servesapopulationofgreaterthan10,000residents.
Most(64%)studyparticipantswerefromcommunitieswithfewerthan5,000residents.127participantswerefromverysmallcommunities,withlessthan1,000residents.214participantswerefromsmallcommunities,86participantswerefrommediumsizedcommunities(populationsbetween5,000and10,000),and108participantswerefromlargecommunities.
92%ofthepubliclibrariesthatparticipatedinthisstudyservecommunitieswithpopulationsunder13,000.
Mostparticipantsidentifiedasfemale(87%).12%identifiedasmale.
Most(73%)participantswerebetweentheagesof65-80.Sixindividualsovertheageof90completedtheprogram,andallsixoftheseindividualsparticipatedinthisprogramatpubliclibrariesthatservedverysmallcommunities.
Duetoanumberoffactors–includingsomeveryenthusiasticpubliclibrarians–themajorityoftheparticipantscamefromtheU.S.stateofIowa.MostverysmallcommunityparticipantscamefromIowa.Nevertheless,participantsrepresentalloftheregionsoftheUnitedStates,withlibrariesparticipatinginWyoming,Arizona,Texas,NewEngland,NorthCarolina,Kentucky,etc.Publiclibrariesfrom17statesparticipatedinthisstudy.
Participants were from small and rural communities across the United States. 49librariesparticipatedintheGeri-Fit®studyprogram.Abreakdownofparticipantsbythesizeoftheircity/towncommunityshowedthat40%ofparticipantswerefromsmallcommunitiesthathadbetween1,000and5,000residents.

Methodology
InFall2018,publiclibrarianswereinvitedtoparticipateinthisstudythroughthenetworksoftheAssociationforRural&SmallLibrariesandLet’sMoveinLibraries.Aftercompletinganonlinetrainingprogram,publiclibrariansadministeredthe12-week,video-basedprogram,eitherinthelibrary’smeetingroomorinopenspaceinthechildren’sroom.Attheconclusionoftheprogram,olderadultsfilledoutathree-pagesurveythataskedabouthealthandwellnessoutcomes.
