A Scout is Helpful & Thrifty…

Last Frontier Council is pleased to announce

the 2020 Scouting CARES Card. The CARES Card will replace Show N Sell Popcorn to

provide a fundraiser with minimal risk amidst the COVID-19 pandemic. The Card contains discounts to many local businesses, and will

be sold as a way to do our part to support these businesses at a time when many have been hit so hard during the pandemic while also providing much needed funds for our

Scouting Programs. Units will earn up to 50% commission ($10) on each $20 CARES Card sold (see commission schedule) allowing units to maximize their fundraising to meet financial

goals with less effort.

This program is RISK FREE, simply return

Thank you for your participation in the Last Frontier Council 2020 Scouting CARES Card Sale. This sale achieves three main objectives for our Scouting program. The money they earn from the sale of the Scouting CARES Card will help meet the needs of your unit and individual Scouts all while providing a quality program for your Scouts. Secondly, the sale is also important to our council. The funds earned by the Last Frontier Council from the sale of the CARES Card are used to make improvements to our council summer camp, day camps and resident camps as well as providing support for council services. Lastly, the sale instills a strong work ethic in participating youth, encouraging them to earn their way to activities and events while giving support throughout the council. Thanks to our partnership with local businesses throughout Oklahoma, the Scouting CARES Card sale is a huge resource to strengthen our local Scouting program. By participating in the sale, you guarantee an opportunity for your unit to have better programming, maintaining low pricing for council events, and more fun for your Scouts! I hope you will use this guidebook as a step-by-step manual for planning, executing, and enjoying the rewards of a successful CARES Card sale. After all, I know the most important part of the CARES Card sale is what it allows your unit to do! Thank you for your leadership and participation. Have a great sale and an even better year in Scouting! Yours in Scouting, Kelley Sheik Rick Inselman Last Frontier Council Last Frontier Council Fall Product Sale Chair Scouting CARES Card Chair

• When selling in your neighborhood, always have an adult and/or buddy with you. • Never enter a stranger’s house without an adult. • Beware of loose dogs. • Keep checks and cash in a separate envelope with your name on it. • Always walk on the sidewalk whenever possible. • Never Sell at night. • Always be courteous.

• Set a Unit sales goal! Parents will support a fundraiser if there is a clear concise goal and reason (i.e.

Summer Camp, Day Camp, Equipment, Trailer, Pinewood Derby Track, etc.). Best methods show that a unit should establish a Unit goal and then develop a per Scout expectation. Think in terms of 15 CARES Cards (minimum) will…

Start with your families! If our unit sells 120 cards we will have earned enough money to

send each Scout in our pack to Day Camp! (20scouts X 15 cards = $3000 worth of Camp fees)

Scouts should coordinate sales times in front of high traffic areas (stores, banks, churches, etc.)….

• Each Scout will have the opportunity to win great prizes

• Units should consider, and are encouraged to develop, their own Prize Program. Youth like prizes and recognition! (Pizza Party, iPod shuffle, or even PIE THEIR CUB MASTER/SCOUT MASTER IN THE FACE, etc.)

• Conduct an ENTHUSIASTIC Kickoff! A Boring and Dreary sales pitch to the Scouts and Families will result in Boring and Dreary commissions! Dream BIG! Small Dreams have no magic!

• Be VERY clear with parents as to what the money earned will be used for. Especially important if it is to be used for anything other than camp!!!

Page 6: LAST FRONTIER COUNCIL - az601583.vo.msecnd.net

• Create a sense of urgency! People react to deadlines: Example - “We would like to have our campaign wrapped up by next week.” If given 4 months to sell, families will take 4 months to sell, and sell everything the last week anyway.

• Turn money in early! The Council will provide additional CARES Cards to units turning in money. The amount of additional CARES Cards that will be given will not exceed the number of cards the unit turned money in for.

• ALL BSA UNIT FUNDRAISERS ARE TO BE USED FOR SCOUTING PURPOSES APPROVED BY THE CHARTER ORGANIZATION AND UNIT COMMITTEE. For more information on Scout Accounts and BSA’s policies for fundraisers please visit: https://blog.scoutingmagazine.org/2014/12/03/individual-scout-accounts/

A great sale starts with a great KICKOFF!!! Follow these simple steps to start your CARES sale with a BANG and

motivate Scouts, parents and other volunteers. 1. Plan ahead. A good kickoff should be under an hour. 2. Emphasize why it is important to sell the Scouting CARES Card. Communicate the exciting Scouting program and how families can cover all their annual expense with one sale.

3. Show Scouts the tools that are available.

4. Spend some time explaining the different ways to sell, key dates for the program and Show N Sell locations.

5. Motivate Scouts to set goals for their sales and to pick an awesome prize!

6. Finish the evening with a memorable event, like throwing pies in the leaders’ faces or funny role-playing. A kickoff is exciting when Scouts are involved in the action!

7. Be sure to include a breakout session where the Scouts go practice their sales presentation and the parents remain with the unit leaders to learn more about what they will need to do.

Page 7: LAST FRONTIER COUNCIL - az601583.vo.msecnd.net

THE SALES PITCH Focus on Scouting instead of the product. ”Will you support Scouting & our community by purchasing a Scouting CARES Card today?” “Will you help us go to camp by purchasing a Scouting CARES Card today?” Explain that this will help our local economies. The Scouting CARES Card has been uniquely designed to help local businesses increase revenue by providing discounts. Be specific on how the money will be used. People are more willing to purchase if they know where the money is going. Be polite. Use ‘Sir’ and ‘Ma’am’ when addressing potential donors. Have the Scouts practice the pitch until they don’t have to think about what they are going to say. Most people do not buy because they were not asked…80%+ will buy cards when asked. Over 90% of people who buy a card from a Scout have made up their mind to support Scouting before they have even seen what the Scout is selling! Say THANK YOU – even if only for their time. Note: Adults should be prepared to deal with people who express a political agenda. Our scouts don’t need to be exposed to this, so consider how to quietly defuse a situation. Do not get into an argument with the individual, simply affirm their right to hold an opinion and thank them for their thoughts.

Sample Sales Script Hi, my name is _____________________(say first name only). I’m a Cub Scout with Pack ____________. We are raising money for our pack and helping our local economy. By buying a Scouting CARES Card today, you’ll be helping me earn my way to camp next summer and do fun things with my pack all year long. 50% of your purchase will go directly to my scouting year & the other 50% of your purchase goes directly to support Scouting in the Last Frontier Council. (Hand the customer the CARES Card) You’ll help us, won’t you? Thank you for your support of Scouting!

Control your inventory! You will also want the flexibility to provide additional cards to Scouts who are selling their CARES Cards quickly. Trying to collect unsold cards from Scouts in an effort to redistribute them is very time consuming.
