LAST FRIDAY OF THE MONTH CONVERSATION Kahua A‘o: A Learning Foundation: Using Hawaiian Language Newspaper Articles for Place and Culture-based Geoscience Teacher Education and Curriculum Development Friday, March 24, 2017 4:00 - 5:30 pm, Andrew W.S. In CCC, Wist Hall PRESENTERS: Pauline Chinn, Curriculum Studies Puakea Nogelmeier, Kawaihuelani/IHLRT Steven Businger, Atmospheric Sciences PARTNERS: School of Ocean and Earth Science and Technology (SOEST), School of Hawaiian Knowledge, and Windward Community College; Funded by NSF Kahua A‘o provides place-, culture-, and standards-based Earth Science STEM lessons with activities that are ready to implement. Lessons integrating Hawaiian language newspaper articles are inspiring for local students and particularly relevant to the 30% of Hawai‘i’s K-12 students who are of Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islander ancestry. We also share the use of Hawaiian language newspapers for research (1871 Hurricane), educational (PD), and institutional outcomes (IHLRT) that extend well beyond Earth Science curriculum development.
