Welcome to the 20th Annual Lassle Ranch Simmentals production sale. It is hard to believe 20 years have gone bysince we sold LRS Preferred Stock 370C in that first sale and he still shows up in lots of pedigrees today. Year afteryear we strive to produce bulls with one goal in mind: To keep you in the cow business and help improve your bottom

line. If you look through the catalog you will notice many of the bulls are sired by some of the best proven and time tested A.I.bulls in the industry and many are the result of our extensive embryo transfer program. Our embryo transfer program has allowedus to offer more genetics from our top cows, as well as gives you the option to purchase full siblings/half siblings to result in amore uniform calf crop. Please take a minute to read about the change in how the EPD’s are calculated and let us know if youhave any questions; the numbers have changed, however their genetic ranking has not changed when comparing bulls.

We are fortunate to get to work in an industry that we love so much and even more fortunate that we get to do it as a familyrun operation. Erwin comes out to the ranch as much as he can, but at 81 is starting to slow down a little. Ryan, Sarah, Grace,and Harper are still in Billings. We love having them close and they enjoy being able to be more involved in the ranch andspend a lot of time helping on the weekends. Grace started Kindergarten this year and loves going to school while Harper isnow walking and is always on the move. Stephanie is still teaching in Hysham and in the summer has been Clay’s hay bossand hired hand. Travis and Alix were married this past July and are living in Sheridan, WY as Travis took a teaching job inRanchester, WY.

As always, the bulls have all been tested for BVD-PI and are certified negative. Any bull that has parentage that indicates he hasa chance of being a carrier for any known genetic defect at the time of the sale will be tested and guaranteed genetic defectfree. The bulls will be fed until April, fertility tested, and delivered to your ranch. Let us know if you have any problems withyour purchase and we will do our best to correct them.

New this year we will be genomically testing some of the bulls. This DNA test will add accuracy to their EPD’s on the bullsthat are tested. This technology is new and you can expect to see even greater use in the future. We will have all updatedEPD’s on the genomically tested bulls available on our website ahead of the sale. All the bulls have been tested to determine if they are homozygous black and will be listed in the catalog.

We are opening up our heifer pen and offering choice of our 2012 born heifer crop. This has become a tradition for us the lastfew years and we have taken great pride in the success of the heifers chosen for their new owners. In addition we are alsoselling 4 red cows. These are the last 4 red cows that we own – I guess they have earned their keep since they are still around.We are selling them for one reason and one reason only – as we try and produce Homozygous black bulls in volume and amore limited market for red bulls – it is tough to manage just a few red cows and have a “red program.” For that reason thesered cows will be sold. They will be sold with papers and a good opportunity for someone looking to add some fresh geneticsto a red Simmental program.

We probably say it every year, but truly believe it this year – we feel this is the best set of bulls we have ever offered for sale.Please take a chance to spend some time on our website ahead of the sale. EPD Percentiles – Where does an animal rank?Knowing where an animal’s EPD ranks within the population of any given genetic evaluation is a far more valuable and accurate prediction of that animals true geneticpredicted merit than simply knowing the numeric value of the EPD itself.First and foremost, before you can rank or even compare animals EPDs, you must be comparing apples to apples and that’s why we use the American Simmental Association’sMulti-Breed Genetic Evaluation It eliminates the guesswork and necessity conversion table and formulas when comparing breeds or hybrids. The accuracy of the Multi-Breedevaluation is increased greatly when all of an animals ancestors are registered in the ASA herdbook and all of the progeny data from them are processed through theMulti-Breed Genetic Evaluation. Data is only as accurate as you make it and at Lassle Ranch Simmentals we have gone the extra mile for many generations of geneticsto insure our customers of accurate and meaningful data. We have added the percentile rank to all the bulls in the sale.The percentile charts below are from the American Simmental Associaiton 2013 Multi-Breed Genetic Evaluation using the new Simmental/Red Angus base. Using thesecharts to plot exactly where an animal ranks within the breed is the most accurate way of determining their true genetic merit and is far more important than the actualnumeric value given to the EPD. The new ASA/RAAA base that was implemented for the 2013 Spring EPDs does not change animal rankings.

We will offer free delivery within 300 mile radius of Glendive, MT. Other delivery arrangements will be made as economicallyas possible, based upon the volume of the purchase.

$100.00 off cattle that are taken sale day. Free feed on any bull over $1750.00 until the first of April. On the bulls that we winter, we will have them fertility tested and fertility certificates issued. Insurance will be available sale day – we encourage you to insure bulls that we winter.

Retained Semen Interest: The buyer will receive full possession, 100% salvage value and ¾ semen interest of any bull purchasedin this sale, while Lassle Ranch Simmentals will retain ¼ semen in these bulls. The buyer has the option – The day of the sale topurchase Lassle semen interest for 25% of the sale price. An example: bull brings $10,000.00 X 25% = $2500.00, If buyer choosesto buy Lassle Semen interest he will pay $12,500.00 the day of the sale. Lassle Ranch Simmentals will reserve 300 units of semenfor in herd use only. If semen interest is not purchased this semen interest royalty entitles LRS to ¼ of the revenues of any semensold. LRS semen interest remains even if the bull or any interest in the bull is sold to a third party. It is the buyer’s responsibilityto ensure that LRS interest is upheld if semen is ever sold. The buyer must also inform any third party of Lassle Ranch Simmentalssemen interest if bull is ever sold. Lassle Ranch Simmentals will not be responsible for expenses related to semen collection orpromotion of any bull purchased unless a mutual agreement is reached for the expenses prior to semen collection.

Full Purchase Value Extended Warranty on Sale Bulls: Every bull selling carries a 100% guarantee extended warranty forone breeding season provided the bull is managed for proper and acceptable nutritional physical health. In the event a customerhas any problem with a bull (health, injury or death) prior to or during the bulls first breeding season the customer shouldimmediately contact Lassle Ranch Simmentals to report a claim. A veterinarian’s statement of the problem will be required andLassle Ranch reserves the right to have the bull returned if deemed necessary. A replacement bull of mutually agreed uponquality will be provided if Lassle Ranch has one available. In the event a satisfactory replacement is not available, the customerwill be given a full credit (minus a salvage value of $1000 for original bull) to be used in a future Lassle Ranch Sale. LRS will notbe held responsible under any circumstances for any settlement amount exceeding the purchase price of bull. No one canguarantee that every animal will perform perfectly, but at Lassle Ranch Simmentals we can guarantee that we will make thingsright if they do not.

Testicle measurements:The scrotal circumference of each bull was tape-measured on December 19, 2012. The scrotal measurement were adjusted toyearling and sometimes will vary one way or another as actual yearlings. We guarantee our bulls 100% for fertility – unless damage is induced at your ranch – and then it’s out of our control.

Griffin Ranch Heifers

The Griffin Ranch has once again agreed to sell 70 head of outstanding black heifers in oursale. They will weigh approximately 740 lbs by sale day and have been hand selected fromover 400 head of heifers. These heifers are moderate framed, high volume females that arebred and handled to produce in the real world. The Griffin family pride themselves on cattlethat will thrive under range conditions, but they will also respond to feed and perform inthe feedlot and on the rail. The last part of December 251 head of these late March andApril steers sold for a pay weight of 850lbs. There are replacement heifers sold every day,but all cattle are not created equal. When you have an opportunity to purchase femaleswith this kind of producing ability from a reputation outfit, don’t miss it. American Simmental Association – Spring 2013 Multi-Breed Genetic Evaluation EPDs – A New Look - A New Tool!!

The New Look – will be the changed numerical expressed value of the EPDs due to the new combined Simmental and Red Angus base. The numbers will look different,but the animals will still rank the same within the breed. The following chart compares the average EPDs for Simmental Hybrids (SimAngus) between the Spring 2013Geneitc evaluation expressed on the new combined Simmental/Red Angus base and the Spring 2012 Genetic Evaluation expressed on the old Simmental base.

As you can see a bull that previously had a 52 YW EPD has an 89 YW EPD – but is still only average.A Bull that previously had a -0.6 BW EPD now has a 1.0 BW EPD – and also is still average for the breed.Obviously, he’s the same bull, so he’s still an average bull when compared on a percentile ranking within the breed.The next chart uses our very high accuracy herd sire, TNT Dual Focus T249 and compares his Spring 2013 EPDs on the new base to his Spring 2012 EPDs on theprior base. He was already very high accuracy for CE, BW, WW, YW and all carcass EPDs, so additional data turned in had little effect on those traits and as youcan see, his percentile rank is almost exactly the same using the new base as it was on the old base.

The New Tool – recently introduced is the incorporation of the ASA DNA 50K genomic data into an animal’s EPDs. This new DNA profile test can have a significantimpact on young animals with no or limited progeny data. Animals that have had the ASA DNA 50K test performed and incorporated into their EPDs will be notedin the catalog with the ASA DNA 50K logo. Suggested Guidelines for using Yearling Bulls:We are firm believers in the use of yearling bulls and feel it is one of the best years of their lives. It is a time when they are easy to manage and theironly concern is breeding cows. We have found that yearling bulls that are managed carefully during the second year of their lives, not only do well, but theywill perform better over time. Below are some suggested guidelines for the care of yearling bulls.

• Upon deliver to your ranch, keep yearling bulls separate from older bulls and feed them a maintenance ration of 5-8 lbs per head of grain and freechoice hay. Reduce the amount of grain fed gradually, so that bulls are on straight hay or grass 2-4 weeks prior to the breeding season.

• Where possible try to limit the bulls and put them in separate pastures with plenty of good quality grass. It is best to achieve the growth andstrength to compete with older bulls for feed and space.

• You will see the benefit of a little added cost and care of feeding a yearling bull by probably two or three more years of service from a well managedand healthy bull.


Cattle with advanced genetic potential, greater levels of health and nutrition are worth more simplybecause they have the potential to deliver more value with less risk for their next owner.
