MG NewsCCMGC Members Becoming Famous!Over the years, a number of our members have had articles and/or photos published in magazines such as the North American MGB Register’s MG Driver and the North American MGA Register’s MGA! magazine, as well as British MG publications. This spring has been particularly successful. The ‘cover girl’ on the March April 2015 MG Driver is Tony and Carole Cohen’s 1968 MGB roadster, with two articles by Tony in that issue as well: “Never Leave Home Without It”, originally published as “The Magic Spanner” in Classical Gas, and “Readers Ride.” Similarly, the January February MG Driver had Troy Bell’s “Didn’t Buy an MG in Panama” which appeared in Classical Gas last year. John and Carol Clarke’s 1962 MGA 1600 Mk II is featured in the March 2015 issue of MG Enthusiast out of Britain. Looking back - Bob & Marie Sherman have had articles published in MG Driver as well as Enjoying MG, the monthly magazine of the MG Owners Club in the UK. Steve & Sheila Kaufman described their North America-wide cruise “Driving the Dream” in MGA! and Peter & Anne Tilbury have published several MGA! articles, particularly ones related to promoting or reporting on events they’ve organized such as the Cruise to the Capital in 2014 and MGA (60) this year.

Aussies MG Convoy Now Heading for Central America & MexicoAt the time of writing, the eight MGs are now on the road in Columbia enroute north to Panama and the rest of Central America. It appears they fell in love with Ecuador. They are planning to be into Mexico by the second week in April and entering the US via Arizona by the middle of the month. If they are able to stick to their schedule, the convoy will be approaching Seattle from Idaho by April 26 and then on to BC by the 28th. Plans are being made to have a welcome event for the group when they arrive in Vancouver. May 15-17: MGA60 (Western Canada) UpdateThe 60th Anniversary is already a success! Almost 60 MGAs have now registered to be part of the weekend celebration, including what will be a very impressive display of this featured marque at the VanDusen All British Field Meet. The deadline has now passed, so no additional MGAs will be allowed on the field. All CCMGC and CXKJR members can still register to participate in the other MGA(60) events on Friday night, Saturday night & Sunday, without going to the ABFM. Those interested should email Peter & Anne Tilbury at [email protected] by May 10.

Powley’s Prowl July 11 or Time Well Wasted With Cars and Friends!Ric MacDonald

Back by popular demand - we are once again going on a drive/picnic with the Morgan Club and anyone else who wants to go for a drive with friends in our English cars. Mike Powley, for those who never had the chance to meet him, was, a ‘character’ in the Vancouver car scene. He was very active in the Jaguar/MG Club and the Morgan Owners Group Northwest. Unfortunately Mike passed on to that ‘Great Field Meet in the Sky’ in 2012, thereby depriving us of his particular form of humour on drives he organised or participated in. It is with this in mind that we celebrate Mike’s love of driving and people with a drive hosted by the Jag/MG Club and Morgan Group, open to anyone who wishes to ‘waste a day’ driving their car in the company of other ‘car people’. This will be the July ‘Kaffee Klatch’.

Once again the Morgan Group will award the coveted ‘Car We Would Most Like to Drive Home’ plaque to a member of the Jag/MG Club. Last year this was chosen by Morgan owners Larry Sharpe and Ric MacDonald, (Ric also being a Jaguar

owner and CXKJR member), and awarded to Tony Cohen for his 1968 MGB. It was awarded to Tony because aside being in fine condition, it could be driven home and ABSOLUTELY nothing need be done to it. I’m sure the plaque resides in an honored place in Tony and Carole’s home. This proves that the ‘fanciest’ car doesn’t always win the award.

July 11 is BC Collector Car Appreciation Day so we will once again hold our drive on that day, an appropriate day to celebrate Mike and our cars. Although a route has not been finalised yet, it will take place in the Fraser Valley and will last about 2 hours before a stop for a picnic lunch. I wish I could give details on how many cars and participants enjoyed the day last year, but I was too busy meeting old and new friends to count, so I will just say we had a good turnout.

Further details will be released later, probably in June, but you can mark the date, July 11 on your calendar. n

May 2 – Drive Your MG or Jaguar Day

    O V E R D R I V E S A N D D A U G H T E R SO V E R D R I V E S AAllan

II n my younger days I carpooled with a fellow in England who had a 1972 MGB GT. It wasn’t ideal as there were two passengers as well as the driver so twenty miles each way was achieved by sharing who “sits” in the back! Fast forward about thirty years and ownership of a 1977 MGB - I coveted the overdrive of our carpooling BGT days. I may be wrong but it seems to me that overdrives are much more common on UK cars, which seems a bit counterintuitive given the vast distances experienced here in North America.

In the summer of 2013 my daughter Kate not only found a suitable overdrive unit on Craigslist but also negotiated a deal including the gear box, removal from the donor car, the small wiring harness that goes with it and - wait for it - she paid for it too. How neat was that! It sat on my garage floor fully protected with several pounds of sandy, greasy gunk collected over its lifetime until the Christmas holiday break when we broke out the scrapers and solvents.

It cleaned up like new. Further inspection showed a reasonable amount of wear, but otherwise a gearbox of excellent condition. Checking online, it seems that we also managed to get the best version of the overdrive unit, the Laycock LH, as identified on the blue nameplate. We had mounted the whole unit on an engine stand for ease of access and now proceeded to invoke the tried and tested exercise of

dismantle, clean, then reassemble all the overdrive parts.

Now to YouTube. I have fixed many items including our dishwasher, thanks to this internet staple. Sure enough, John Twist “how-to’s” proliferate in the MG YouTube world. With his guidance everything was dismantled

with confidence. It was pretty ‘goopy’ inside the unit with some fine metal filings trapped on the filter, which was a bit worrying. I am pretty sure it had never been stripped down in its lifetime so we laid out all the parts and decided what to reuse and what to replace, the filter screen and all the O-rings being the most obvious. Fortunately the most expensive part - the solenoid - was working fine, and all the parts we needed were purchased through Octagon Motors. [What a shame they are no longer in the parts business. In the ten years of ownership and restoration of the MGB, we purchased absolutely everything we needed from them - it is such a disappointment.] Everything was cleaned with copious amounts of Carb Cleaner. What a wonderful product - we’ve even used it on carbs! Reassembly required

quite a bit of patience but it was all eventually buttoned up.

In 2013 I purchased a luxury item called a hoist, both for maintenance and to be able to stack the MG and the E-type in the same space. Now it was time to install the new gearbox and overdrive in the car. Not too many years ago we had the engine out for a rebuild while also

repainting the engine bay. With the car on the hoist we decided we could easily remove the gearbox on the hoist leaving the engine in place. Well, you can’t! Not only is it impossible, but we had now got into a position where the housing could not be re-bolted to the engine, the splines on the drive shaft would not line up and the gearbox was left hanging. We had to tie it up with rope in order to run the car off the hoist ramps and clear the hoist frame.

Then we moved the MG to the other side of the garage to get the wheels of a regular engine hoist under the car to remove both engine and gearbox. A big thanks to John Clarke for the loan of his engine hoist. The result was it took us about three times as long to do the swap as it should. Surprisingly enough, not everything you read on the internet is true. This is a statement I stand by! But there is another consideration - majority rules! Everything we read told us to remove the engine but of course we have a hoist! It was a lesson we will not soon forget.

Now came the road test. We filled the unit with oil and remembered that we should have found a better way to fill. Those darned late model cars do not have an access plate in the floor - ideas anyone? First dry day I took the car for a spin, got up to speed and flipped the switch while holding my breath - nothing for about two seconds then joy of joys - in came the hydraulic unit. I had forgotten about the little dwell time and two seconds seemed like an eternity. Back home the oil level was topped up after its first use; the same gearbox oil is used in the hydraulic unit. I can tell you now that there is no going back. Overdrive is just about the best improvement you can make on an MGB. The car settles down to an engine speed more comfortable to our modern day car ears and the drive feels more relaxed.

I would never have thought I’d have a daughter so interested in cars. Over the last ten years between us we have taken a reasonable car needing a lot of mechanical repairs and improved its reliability and looks. We have enjoyed many trips and made great friends though the car club. Now with the purchase of the 1970 Jaguar E-type we will not need to share two seats between three of us: me, Kate and my wife Lisa. That reminds me, I need to get working on the Jag - now let’s get back to that hoist! ■■

A fter partaking of the refreshments in the tidy showroom, we moved through the raised door into the service department where there were rows of chairs for us and an MGB up on a hoist. After a greeting from Cam Lutzig we turned our attention to the mechanic Syd McNabb, who introduced us to his personal chrome bumper MG on the hoist. He explained he would go over some of the highlights for putting our vehicles back on the road after a winter’s rest. Many of the points he would cover could be applied to cars that have been out of service for long periods or those that are being considered for purchase.

Syd explained that any rust in a unit body shell must be taken seriously and can be dangerous. He does not consider the side jack for anything other than changing a wheel. To support the car during an inspection, reliable stands or a professional garage hoist must be used. Investigate any rust with a tool like a screwdriver. Be diligent around the rear spring hangers, rust perforation is bad news in this area. The floor panels and rocker sills are also important especially on roadsters; holes in outer panels often mask more rust behind them.

Points of interest include the rubber components: motor mounts, steering rack boots, brake, coolant, fuel and oil hoses - all will harden with age and develop cracks and eventually leak. One little-known problem Syd alluded to was ‘hose valving’ which occurs in older hoses. Most

hoses are built in layers that may include an outer layer to resist abrasion, an inner layer for strength and then a third layer on the inside to resist the fluid carried. Given the right conditions the innermost layer can detach itself

and collapse. Under pressure the liquid (for instance brake fluid) forces its way through the collapsed portion, but when the brake pedal is lifted the lining collapses again and the brake does not release. Think about that for awhile!

Other rubber components that perish and wear in time include suspension bushings, motor mounts, rear axle check straps and exhaust system hangers. Also, what is between your car and the road? Tires of course! The sidewalls and the tread need to be checked for cracks and depth of tread. It may be best to have an expert check them.

Syd also pointed out that wheels should have very little slack in them, as should the steering. The kingpins should also have a minimum of slack; when badly worn you will feel and hear clunks particularly when braking. The front suspension and hand brake cable require regular greasing. The splines on the drive shaft also need grease as do the universal joints if fitted with nipples.

This article does not cover all the gems that Syd shared with us. He gave us lots to think about and concluded by suggesting we contact our local service department. Thank you Octagon, and Syd in particular. n

F or many years, Mike Powley organized the March membership meeting as an opportunity for club members to present innovative displays of models and/or other collectibles (not required to be car-related), trying to win the hearts of members voting for their favourites. T his year’s 12th Annual Super Bowl Party on Sunday, February 1, brought out the crowds (75 party-goers) to Ian and Doreen Newby’s in Aldergrove. The potluck feast and the camaraderie were highpoints, even more so than the game itself. After all, it’s not a requirement to like or

even know much about football to have fun at this popular annual event. As is always the case, participants had the opportunity to see many Jaguars, MGs and other classics in the Newby collection. n

Lola, the RWM & Co Shop Dog

Lola is a 2-year old mixed breed rescue dog from L.E.A.S.H. Animal Welfare Society. She was found on the streets of California as a very young puppy, and was taken to a shelter as a stray. It’s hard to believe that our beloved girl was originally given a deadline of 48 hours before she would have been put to sleep for no other reason except an overcrowded shelter and being part bully breed. Thankfully she had a team of people working on her behalf, and was pulled out in the nick of time. After being rescued by L.E.A.S.H. and becoming a Canadian citizen, we adopted her when she was only a few months old. Since then, she has settled in to her unofficial role as the RWM & Co. shop dog – a job that she takes very seriously! On any given day, visitors to our shop can expect to be greeted by a full-body wiggle, and maybe a bark or two, as Lola manages to sneak from the office into the shop to be pet by anyone and everyone who walks through our doors. She is full of energy as anyone who has met her will attest to, and loves nothing more than to be the centre of attention…even going so far as to chase her own tail (her favourite party trick) if she thinks she’s being ignored. While she is always eager to be where the action is, Lola is impeccably trained around the cars in the shop, and knows exactly how close she is allowed to get to the cars and machinery. When she’s at the shop, she has her own comfortable chair in the office and has been known to try to sit on someone’s lap if they dare sit in “her” chair. She’s definitely caught a few people by surprise – it’s not every

day you have a 55-lb lap dog try to curl up on you, after all. While we’d like to believe that people come to see us for the cars and projects we have on the go, the reality is Lola has many visitors who come just to see her, and we can’t blame them.

One of the questions we are asked the most often is exactly what type of dog Lola is. Truthfully, we have no clue although we do have our suspicions about her genetic makeup. What we do know for sure is that she is full of character and charm, and we wouldn’t change our brindle beauty for the world. n

  • Classical Gas  |  25March | April  2015

L ocated in sunny White Rock, BC, I have the largest stock of new old stock parts for Smiths and Jaeger instruments in Canada. I can correct British speedometers for ratio changes in the instruments with worm drive and gear combinations, both odo and speed pointer. The speed pointers are magnetically coupled, so I can repair and recalibrate to factory specs or adjust pointer readings to compensate for ratio changes large or small.

I have developed a repair process for the old ether-filled capillary tube temperature gauges and can repair and/or change tachometers to match cylinder requirements and polarity changes. I can repair voltmeters, ammeters, fuel gauges as well as mechanical and electromechanical clocks and both American and European gauges.

I trained as a watchmaker at George Brown College in Toronto and worked for 30 years as an aircraft instrumentation technician, repairing gyroscopic, barometric and electromechanical instruments. I’ve been repairing collector and antique automotive instruments for 20 years. As a classic car and motorcycle enthusiast and collector, I own or have owned Jaguars, Triumphs, Corvettes and both Norton 750s and Honda CB750s.

RESTORER OF ANTIQUE & COLLECTOR AUTOMOTIVE INSTRUMENTS

A decade or more ago I was having a problem with one of the Smiths dashboard instruments in my ’67 MGB GT. I had found an Ontario phone number and was talking with an instrument repairman of the Germanic persuasion. Yes, he would help me if I sent him the instrument and $350.00. He guaranteed he would return the excess funds after the repair. He explained that a Western Canadian had ‘stiffed’ him a year previously. When he learned where I lived, he asked me why I did not send it to Oliver Bienz, the best Smiths man he knew of on the west coast. He gave me Oliver’s details and it turned out he was an E-Type owner and a member of CXKJR! The rest is history – most of our

club’s restorers use Oliver’s services as do most of the commercial firms and like myself, I believe they are very satisfied with price, quality and quick turnaround time on repairs.

Instruments are a big part of Oliver’s life; he has had a long career as an aviation instrument rebuilder. I have learned one important tip from this man – if you are thinking of having an instrument from your car repaired, call him first for free advice and shipping instructions. Although Oliver loved his Jaguar, he now drives a 1989 red TVR 290S and will be at the VanDusen All British Field Meet as TVR is a featured marque this year. n

June 21 – Father’s Day PicnicOne of the club’s most popular annual events, the picnic will take place at the Confederation Park Miniature Railway, located a few blocks north of Hastings in Burnaby at 120 North Willingdon Avenue. There are over two miles of track on two main routes, with steam and diesel locomotives hauling trains through two tunnels and over several bridges. 1/8 full size, the trains carry up to 30 passengers. What to bring? Your favourite car, picnic food, and folding chairs if you have room. There’ll be dedicated parking by the entrance for MGs and Jags, with parking for non-marque sports cars available on the street and in the adjacent lots. The invitation includes the members’ extended families e.g. grandparents and grandchildren.

Important note: Sometimes parents get upset when they bring the whole family and we are unable to carry their infants. Infants unable to sit on the train seats and support themselves must be in a hands-free ‘snugli’ type carrier worn by an adult.

The railway operates from 11 am to 5 pm. In the past most club members (and vtheir families) were on site between 12:30 and 4:00 pm. How much? No charge. The club has arranged for unlimited rides on the trains and a concession sells hot dogs, ice cream, hot & cold drinks. Further information: Joe Carroll at [email protected] or 604-988-2497.
