5/6C have been very busy this term. Our Year 6 students have visited Gorokan High School for a Taster Day of what it will be like for them next year in high school. They participated in a science experience in Laboratory 2 involving water, gas and an aluminium can and also learnt about France in preparation for learning to speak French next year. This week they will also attend the Surf Fun Day at Terrigal Beach to experience a variety of exciting beach and surf activities. In class this term we have been learning about explanation writing, doing lots of Mathematics, investigating water in our Science unit and have begun our Visual Arts paper maché activity which will see each child leave the class at the end of the year with their own Piggy Bank to help them save for their future. If you are anything like me, you are wondering where the year went! Schools everywhere often find that in the last part of a year some children’s behaviours begin to deteriorate and absenteeism begins to increase. The staff are reminding children that we all expect best behaviour until the very last day. We also expect children to attend school until December 15 regardless of how appealing the beach or Christmas shopping may be. This week has been a busy one for our senior classes. On Monday most Year 6 children attended Gorokan High School’s “Taster Day”. The children met some of their 2011 teachers including the Year Advisors. In groups, the children experienced some high school lessons including a Science lesson on air pressure, a French cultural lesson and an English game activity. A barbeque lunch and a tour of the school all helped to prepare the children for transition to high school. Also this week, the Stage Three children (Grades 5 and 6) have had their ‘Surf Fun Days’. During the day children experienced a number of activities including obstacle courses, beach games on the sand, life saving activities in the water and Nipper boarding. The day is designed to increase each child’s confidence and awareness when visiting any of our beaches. DID YOU KNOW? ‘Baked not fried’ does not necessarily mean less fat. Baked products may still contain just as much fat—check the label. The total fat of some ‘baked not fried’ savoury biscuits varies from 18-27g fat/100g depending on the variety. Potato crisps on average contain 30g fat/100g.

SATURDAY SCHOOL OF COMMUNITY LANGUAGES ENROLMENTS Applications are open for Year 6 students to enroll in 2011 Saturday School of Community Languages (SSCL) Year 7 courses. Applications formally close on Saturday 26th February 2011. Find enrolment forms at: http://www.curriculumsupport.education.nsw.gov.au/secondary/languages/sscl/ SEXTING Parents are urged to warn children about the dangers of ‘sexting’ - the growing trend for young people to send provocative images of themselves to their friends via mobile phones. Tips for parents: • warn your children about the consequences of

sexting. • remind children to think before they act. • tell children that sending or possessing child

pornography is illegal. • warn them about sexual predators. • parents should learn how to use and monitor

their children’s mobile phones. • parents should check photo galleries on their

children’s Facebook and MySpace accounts. • give your children clear rules on what they can

and can’t do with their mobile phone. Parents can learn about how technology is used in their child’s life by visiting the education department’s website ww.schools.nsw.edu.au/click
