  • HAPPENINGS in NOV./DEC. 2015

… Tony, Jean Vendetta and friends enjoyed a

wonderful extended trip to Ireland…Donna & Bill

in Vegas and missed our Christmas party…Martine

handling the raffle sales, unable to dance because of

shoulder problems…Audrey was dressed in red and

white like Mrs. Claus…hello to Ron Meyer from

Vegas…Lila and John also visiting from

    Vegas…Don and ShirleyEstep – a big hello…

all members were admitted free to our Christmas

party… A BIG THANKS to Santa Claus (James

Allen) for visiting and handing out goodies; he also

enjoyed all the gals on his lap having their pictures

taken (see page 7)…A big thank you to Bob

Valarik and Dan Snyder for your invaluable help

with the Newsletter: Bob for his great pictures and

    Dan for his technical help…

    CONGRATULATIONS to L.A.S.D.C. Charter

Member Leon Raper who was inducted into the

World Swing Dance Hall of Fame in November. He

was also inducted into the California Swing Dance

    Hall of Fame in 2010.

SUNSHINE WISHES TO: Flip Phillips fell and was hospitalized but now

recovering at home…Gracie Barnes fell and broke her

hip and recovering from operation…Bill Maloof

    fighting lung cancer…Colleen Johnson…Danny

Darryl in rehab and still very cheerful…

    FOOD FOR THOUGHT

Where there’s a will, I want to be in

it…The last thing I want to do is hurt you,

but it’s still on my list…Since light travels

faster than sound, some people appear

bright until you hear them speak…If I

agreed with you, we’d both be

wrong…War does not determine who is

right, only who is left…Knowledge is

knowing a tomato is a fruit. Wisdom is

not putting it in a fruit salad…I didn’t say

it was your fault, I said I was blaming

you…In filling out an application, where it

says, “In case of emergency, notify-“ I

answered “a doctor.”…I used to be

indecisive, but now I’m not so

sure…You’re never too old to learn

    something stupid…I’m supposed to

respect my elders, but it’s getting harder

and harder for me to find one now.

  • DANCER’S PROFILE

    By Abbe Fessenden

JAMES ALLEN describes himself as easy

going, realizing at an early age that it was just plain

stupid to agonize over little things and events he

    couldn’t control.

Born in Fountain Grove, Missouri, which is

north of Kansas City, JAMES emigrated to

California seeking job opportunities. He found

many and ended up being a jack of all trades as he

experimented in building basements, doing door to

door sales, working in a paper factory, was a

machine operator, an asphalt estimator and heavy

duty equipment operator. At Sears, he worked as

assistant manager in several departments: paint,

draperies and clothing. Ultimately, he owned his

own company doing electrical maintenance for

    shopping centers and automobile dealerships.

JAMES now lives in Westminster in a 4-br

2-story house. He does his own yard work,

plumbing and is a good handyman. Paying

    attention, ladies?

West Coast Swing is his favorite dance style

and he began dancing to juke box music while in

    high school, after football games.

A four-year stint in the Navy took him to

Shangri-La where he served as an interior

communications electrician on the Hornet, an

aircraft carrier. He was also stationed stateside in

    Long Beach and San Diego.

The most influential person in his life was

his mother, an easy going lady who taught him

manners and how to treat people. One child, a

daughter, lives in Palm Springs and a brother and

    sister live in Oregon.

Golf is his favorite activity but he would not

divulge his handicap. He also enjoys playing

cribbage. He dislikes, as most of us do, trying to get

things handled on the telephone obstructed by

automation, recordings and waiting while on hold.

He agrees that good customer service is hard to

    find.

Red Skelton’s humor was a favorite of

JAMES’ because none of his slapstick comedy was

objectionable or filthy compared to today’s comics,

but he considers himself a dry-humored guy who

often makes off-handed remarks. Probably many of

you readers know this about him. I haven’t had the

    pleasure yet.

    Having traveled extensively, JAMES visited

Alaska, New Orleans, Oahu, the Greek Islands,

Puerto Vallarta and did Canada on a train to

Toronto, Ottawa, Montreal and Boston. A possible

river boat cruise is on his “to do Bucket List.”

On a personal level, JAMES is an early riser

at about 3:00 a.m. and retires at 9:30 p.m. He

doesn’t really cook, except for breakfasts of eggs,

bacon and milk, which he always has on hand, so he

eats a lot of TV dinners. Snakes are his only fear

and he came nose to nose with one when he was

three years old. It made a lifelong impact.

As a teen, he spent two nights in jail for an

outstanding parking ticket, quite a harsh penalty for

a minimal offense. It appears the judge was trying

to teach JAMES a lesson. It did! He had to share a

cell with a murderer who teased him a bit but was

otherwise an interesting cellmate. The sad part is it

happened on Thanksgiving Eve so he had to spend

    Thanksgiving Day in jail.

I found JAMES to be a gentleman, always

well-dressed and neat, who is calm, collected, soft-

spoken and, well yes, easy going.

    Larry & Eloise Kroeze

    Congratulations
