“I am only one, but I am one. I cannot do everything, but I can do something. And I will not let what I cannot do interfere with what I can do.” - Edward Everett Hale

Your friends at the Las Vegas Pet Scene Magazine

Earth Day The gorgeous weather of spring in Las Vegas entices us to go outside. Mother Nature invites us to enjoy and appreciate her beauty and her gifts.

April 22 gives us another opportunity to pause to appreciate our world. Earth Day was created to honor and show our respect and appreciation. A time to reflect and focus on ways to care for the earth and all living creatures who co-habit the earth with us. We are interconnected in the great circle of life; on some level we interact with every creature on this planet earth – our home!

We often feel overwhelmed with so much to do and can sometimes feel that our efforts are futile. It is so important to start where we are and do what we can even if we feel it isn’t enough – small things if practiced regularly by a large group of people will have a positive impact on our environment.

The 3R’s of helping our environment are Reduce, Re-use, and Recycle. At LVPSM one way we care for the environment is by using sustainable printing in publishing our magazine. We hope that you’ll join us in recycling our publication when you finish reading it. Hint: we would love it if you practiced “Re-use” and pass along your copy to a friend.

Caring for our pets is one way to honor our world.

The paper is recycled, reuseable, renewable and biodegradable; the ink is soy-based inks and are used, reused, then recycled; the plates are process free and eliminates VOC’s and reduces water usage dramatically; and last, using Cold-Set presses vs. Heat-Set reduces the amount of VOC’s put into the air by 98%.

Thank you for all you do to care for our earth and all living creatures!

At tax time, animal-rescue volunteers can claim charitable deductions for certain expenses incurred in animal rescue work. For example, some out-of-pocket fostering expenses that could be claimed include animal feed, medicines, cat litter, litter boxes, pet dishes, etc Some allowable deductions for volunteers include expenses traveling to and from animal shelters, veterinarians, committee meetings, and fundraising events.

You must establish that the expenses incurred were to further the efforts of the charitable organization. Accurate records are important – all expenses need to be documented. For expenses over $250 the IRS requires a letter from the charity describing and placing a good faith estimate on the value of your services.

Check with your tax professional to discuss these potential deductions to confirm that they are legitimate for your personal financial and tax situation.

You’ve opened your homes, your hearts, and your wallets – the returns on your investment are joy and love – however, the IRS may also have a little extra reward for your volunteering and fostering.

“A dog has lots of friends because he wags his tail and not his tongue.” ~ Anonymous

Page 8: Las Vegas Pet Scene Magazine - March/April 2016

ABC’S! No, singing the alphabet won’t save our furry friends, but focusing on

Airway, Breathing, and Circulation/Cardiac function can. AIRWAY: Focusing on anything that could block the normal flow of oxygen into the lungs. Saliva, vomitus, or foreign material (rocks, toys, sticks). If a foreign object is stuck, do not use excessive force to try to remove the object, and never pull on a string! BE CAREFUL – PAINFUL OR SCARED PETS MAY BITE! BREATHING: Focus on trying to allow the animal to start breathing again, or breathe more efficiently. Make sure the head is straight, pull gently on the tongue to allow for better breathing. Mouth to nose rescue breaths can be administered, but again use caution as not to get bitten. Circulation/Cardiac Function: Assess by feeling for a pulse inside the inner thigh region, also by placing your hand over the left side of the chest. Further assistance with CPR or ABC’s can be discussed with your veterinarian.

As the weather warms up, another common emergency is an external laceration or wound. As mentioned before, it is always best to seek professional veterinary advice, although here are some tips to try to manage a severely bleeding wound. Try to apply pressure to the bleeding with clean gauze or cloth. If the laceration is superficial, cleaning the wound might

help, only using saline, betadine, or chlorhexadine.

Summer parties, BBQ’s, Pool parties – Poisons? Yes, many pets will sneak a “treat” in or some will go for the whole table! As a general rule of thumb, human food is for humans, and pet food is for pets! Many human foods can be toxic, and some even life threatening! Grapes, fried foods, chocolate, alcohol, garlic, onions, and candy are common items found at social gatherings, ALL of which are toxic to dogs and cats. Try keeping a treat stash for your furry family members, or better yet maybe putting them in a quiet room for some rest during the event. These events can be a lot of fun for us, but the amount of people and noise can sometimes overwhelm our pets, and can unknowingly even put them in harms way!

Oh no, Rover got into our trash again!! As pet owners, there are many emergency situations that arise on a daily basis, and sometimes getting to your veterinarian is a timely and strenuous ordeal. In times like these, it is always recommended to take your four-legged friend to a veterinarian, however here are some potentially lifesaving tips to use at home and on the way to your veterinarian. As with your family, having a emergency plan is best, and discussing this with your veterinarian is recommended.

Remember to always STAY CALM! Just as humans can sense your energy, animals can too! Keeping a level head can sometimes help save your pets life. Also remember these are just tips that MAY save your pets life, but routine exams and bloodwork can catch problems earlier, possibly eliminating these emergencies. Make a plan, stay calm, and always contact your veterinarian.

• Place pressure with gauze or a clean cloth to stop bleeding. • If there is debris, flush the wound with saline or clean water.• For deep wounds, or severe bleeding, keep pressure until until you can get your pet to a veterinarian.

• The most important thing to do is to protect your pet from self-injury. • DO NOT place your fingers or any object in your pet’s mouth. • Clear the area around your pet to help prevent injury during the seizure. • DO NOT attempt to restrain your pet, but you can place a hand on their body. • When the seizure has stopped, contact your veterinarian for further instructions. • If the seizure does not stop within 3 to 5 minutes or if your pet comes out of the seizure and goes into another one within an hour, transport the pet immediately to the veterinarian.

• If choking, hold upper jaw open with one hand, and look for a foreign object. • Unless you can clearly see and grasp the obstruction, do not put your fingers into your dog’s mouth or throat. • Lift smaller dogs’ legs into the air so gravity can help dislodge the obstruction. • If you can’t remove the foreign object, using the heel of your hand, deliver 4-5 sharp blows on the dog between the shoulder blades.

• If you suspect poisoning, seek care immediately. • If you cannot get to the vet immediately, are waiting for a ride, or are stranded, you can call either of these 24-hour emergency hotlines:

Unlikely Loves Book: 43 Heartwarming True Stories from the Animal Kingdom by Jennifer S. Holland is a collection of short stories about “unlikely” relationships between different species.

The stories are delightfully told and beautifully illustrated; they help expand our understanding of the emotional lives of animals. They explore animal attachments that in our experience would be called love. Reading these heartwarming stories will deepen the bond we have with our own pets and create a deeper connection with all living creatures.

This is a book your whole family will enjoy.

The author is a contributing writer for National Geographic, specializing in science and natural history. She writes with insight and compassion which reflects her deep affection for animals. On her website she gives thanks to her mother – “Thanks to my mother’s DNA, I’ve loved animals since the womb.”

Do Unto Animals – A Friendly Guide to How Animals Live, and How We can Make Their Lives Better – Tracey Stewart The title reflects a variation of the Stewart’s family code - “Our family’s code is to live according to the golden rule: we do unto others as we would have them do unto us.” Tracey Stewart’s purpose is to change how we interact with animals. She feels that the more we learn and understand about animals the more we will love them and the better we will care for them.

The book offers a very unique reading experience – some books are read for pleasure and some are read for information – this book was a pleasure to read and yet contains so much useful information. The author’s style is friendly and personal. There are three sections: Animals at Home, Backyard Wildlife and Falling in Love on the Farm. Each section gives us a glimpse into the inner lives of the animals who share our world with us.

Tracey Stewart is a passionate animal advocate, former veterinary technician. A portion of the book’s proceeds will be donated to Farm Sanctuary.g

CATSBOXES!

Warmth – Cats prefer temperatures about 86 to 96 degrees F. This is warmer than most people prefer – cardboard boxes are insulating and when cats are curled up in a small box it helps preserve their body heat.

Stress Relief – The universal feline response to a stressful situation is to withdraw and hide. Squeezing into a small box creates a comfort zone where they feel secure and protected; a place to hide and relax. A study published in the journal, Applied Animal Behaviour Science, found that shelter cats who were given a box adapted quicker to their environment than the cats who were not given a box. It is especially important when bringing home a new cat that you provide boxes or box-like areas to help them create a safe hiding place.

Boxes - they help keep your cat warm and help keep them feel safe and secure!

If it’s big enough to squeeze into you can be sure that a cat will be in it. Cat people are always amazed at how a cat can squeeze into such tiny spaces…. How do they do that? Another question is “Why do they do that?” We’re familiar with catitude so maybe a cat might answer “because I can”! However, here are two possible reasons why cats squeeze into tiny boxes:

Love

Page 14: Las Vegas Pet Scene Magazine - March/April 2016

Sneezing, coughing, and a runny nose can all be signs that the allergy season is upon us. Unfortunately, this is the time of year that many of us suffer from

allergies. Pets, as well as people, can be susceptible to many of the same airborne allergens. Pollen, trees, grasses, mold and insects can all trigger an allergic response that leaves many people and pets feeling uncomfortable and downright “grumpy”.

Most of us with seasonal allergies know what symptoms we typically exhibit. Our allergies usually affect the respiratory tract, causing our sniffling and sneezing. We know our symptoms and we know what is causing it, but what allergy symptoms do we look for in our pets?

Some animals will exhibit the same allergy symptoms as we do when spring approaches – watery eyes, runny nose and sneezing. But more commonly, allergies in dogs and cats tend to take the form of a skin inflammation and irritation. This condition, called “allergic dermatitis”, frequently presents itself with symptoms of excessive scratching or grooming. If your pet seems to be licking, scratching or chewing at his skin more than usual, he may be suffering from seasonal allergies. A thorough examination of your pet’s skin can help you determine if allergies are the cause of the persistent scratching. Look for signs of unusually red, rash-like skin and/or hair loss. If you notice the presence of either one of these symptoms, there are steps you can take to ease the itch and make your pet more comfortable.

The most important thing you can do to help your pet is to remove any allergens from the surface of their body. Frequent baths with a grain-free shampoo is an effective

way to give them some immediate itch relief. In between baths, cleaning and soaking their feet will help reduce the amount of allergens they track into the house. When time is limited, simply wipe down your pet with a towel when they return from the outdoors - especially their feet. (Taking off your shoes before entering the house is also a good idea.) Anything you can do to keep the allergens outside will be beneficial to your pet. To reduce the amount of airborne allergens in your home, keep your windows closed and run a HEPA air filter as much as possible.

If your furry friend still seems miserable and itchy after taking these precautions, consult with your veterinarian. Sometimes allergy reactions can become severe and lead to inflamed, infected patches of skin known as “Hot Spots”. (A Hot Spot will usually look very red and may be bloody or scab-like with hair loss around it.) The constant licking and scratching of this area will typically make it worse. Another symptom to look for is a foul odor coming from the ears, especially in dogs. As the skin inside their ears becomes inflamed it could develop into a bacterial or yeast infection. They may scratch at their ears and frequently shake their head. If you notice a Hot Spot or suspect an ear infection, it is important that you have your pet seen by a veterinarian as soon as possible.

Although springtime allergies do not last forever, they can be an uncomfortable nuisance when we have them. Adding a few preventative measures to your springtime routine can help you and your pet feel more comfortable by keeping those allergens out of the house where they belong. J

June has been the traditional wedding month. June is named for Juno, the Roman goddess of marriage. Ancient tradition believed that couples who married in June would be blessed with prosperity and happiness. However, in Las Vegas, the “wedding capital of the world, weather wins over tradition – the near perfect weather in April, May, September and October has made these the popular months for weddings in Vegas.

Wedding ceremonies are usually a blend of traditional wedding customs, family traditions and trends. It is important to incorporate traditions and customs that are meaningful for you. You can also share your passion for a favorite charity by including charitable giving in your wedding planning.

According to the I Do Foundation* many couples are raising money for charity through their weddings in two ways:

Wedding Favors – The origin of giving favors to guests came from the belief that the bride and groom are associated with good luck and that everything they touched would be blessed. Giving gifts to the community was a way to pass the blessings to others. Many couples are choosing to share the blessing by making a charitable donation on behalf of each guest.

Gifts to Charities in Lieu of Personal Gifts – The current trend is that people are waiting to get married until they are older and more established. Many couples have homes together - they have toasters, sheets, dishes, and linens. Charitable donations either in cash or through gift registries are wonderful ways for your family and friends to honor you on your special day.

A wedding is all about love and combining your wedding celebration with charity is a wonderful way to share your love

with so many people and hopefully pets if you select an animal rescue or shelter as your charity!

You have a what…

Often the question is followed by raised eyebrows and unspoken thoughts – rats are rodents, they’re dirty and carry diseases,

etc. Unfortunately rats are often associated with sewers, trash containers, and filth. However, they are becoming extremely popular pocket pets – people who love rats or “ratties” find them cuddly, intelligent, and amazing.

They are highly intelligent, curious, and socially interactive animals. They are easily tamed and relatively easy to care for; ideally they require at least an hour a day of exercise outside their cages. Rats are social animals and having two will meet their need to play and interact with other rats. They also love spending time with their owners. Even though rats are nocturnal and are most active at night they will change their routine to match their human family. Rats live an average of 2 to 3 years.

They make great “starter” pets for children and people with limited time, money, space, etc. that some other pets require. However, the decision to have rats as pets is a serious one - like any pet they depend on humans to meet all their needs for food, housing, warmth, medical care, social and intellectual enrichment. Rats like to learn and they need to explore.

Rats are tiny little pets with huge personalities. They have everything you want in a pet but are “pocket-sized”. Are you looking for the companionship of a warm, cuddly, friendly and intelligent pet?

Estate planning is important for both individuals and pets. Proper planning can literally save a pet’s life. Under Nevada law, an individual can plan for the care of their pet in the event of the death or disability of the individual owner via a “pet trust”. The pet trust provisions are included in the individual’s trust.

If the value of an individual’s estate is over $20,000 then the assets must go through probate. Wills do not avoid probate, only well drafted and funded trusts will avoid probate.

Many pet owners want to have an agreement with a neighbor to take their pet instead of planning for the pet inside a trust. In Nevada, pets are considered property so an Animal Control officer will not release the pet to the neighbor because the agency has no more authority to automatically transfer ownership of a pet than it does to transfer ownership of a person’s television. If no family member is present, the pets are taken to the government shelter where they will immediately face the danger of being put to sleep, exposed to disease and the stress of not only losing their owner but being around people they do not know in an environment they are not used to.

I often receive calls from friends or animal rescue groups because a pet was taken to the government kill shelter when an individual passes away or suffers a major medical problem and is put into the hospital. The shelters will not release the pet to non-family members. Many times there are no family members or the family members live out of state. Some shelters euthanize animals as early as 72 hours after the pet arrives which makes it virtually impossible for anyone to adopt the pet or for a family member to get the pet. With proper planning these situations can be avoided.

Inside a trust we can include language that will cover the individual’s wants and concerns. An individual may want to leave their pet to a neighbor, friend or rescue group along with money as a “thank you” for caring for the pet, or they might want to keep all of their pets living in the house they currently live in with a caregiver assigned to live with and care for the pets. Money can be held in trust to pay for the pet’s care as well as the expenses of the house.

Be careful about leaving money outright to an individual as a “thank you” because once the individual has your pet and your money the individual can take the pet to the vet or a shelter and have them put to sleep and keep your money. Unfortunately, this happens far too often.

Estate planning is important for all animals. Some animals live to be 100 years old, like birds and desert tortoises, some animals are very large, require a lot of room and are expensive to care for, like horses and some animals have known medical problems. Many pet owners want to ensure there is money for the pet’s future needs.

Proper estate planning including provisions for your pet is one of the greatest things you can do for yourself and your pet so you have peace of mind that your pet will be taken care of in the event you are unable to.

It is imperative that planning be done by an attorney who is well versed in estate planning for pets as it is a matter of life or death for your pet. A provision stating, “Daisy will go to James,” is not sufficient. James may not be able to care for Daisy and if you have a new pet, that pet will not be covered under the terms of the trust.

If you have specific questions or concerns please call Donna at (702) 444-3713 to schedule an appointment. You can get additional information on estate planning at

I was waiting for my doctors’ appointment when a matted, dirty and sickly looking cat appeared outside the door. He sat there calling to anyone to come and help him. Eventually he gave up his cries for help. Looking hopeless and defeated, he weakly walked into some nearby bushes probably to take his last breath.

Hearing the receptionist behind the desk say, animal control was on their way to get him. I knew he would be euthanized. I was tormented at the thought of animal control taking him and how frightened he would be. Without a further thought, I ran to my car grabbed a towel and box and called out to him. Weak meows led me to him lying there. He could barely hold his head up to look at me with sad eyes. I carefully picked him up, rushing him to the vet, and assuming the worst case scenario for him.

At the vets, I was told he may make it and that he was once an indoor cat and was declawed. His stomach was empty with only a tiny pebble in it. He was old and sick and would not have lasted another day outside. Ben as I named him, was diabetic and had kidney failure and would require insulin daily and sub q fluids twice a week. After being cleaned up, I took him to give him a forever home. He continues to thrive; his once dull lifeless eyes are filled with light. I will never know Ben’s story, why he ended up where he was, if he was abandoned or not. I will never know what his name was. I do know he was left starving, neglected and left to die all alone and his fate seemed sealed that day until our paths crossed.

Sue Grundfest was recovering from a life threatening illness more than twenty years ago, when she decided to adopt Coco, a puppy who was soon discovered to have some health issues of her own. Coco, it turned out, was diabetic and subsequently became blind and deaf. But that didn’t stop her ability to love, hence her nickname, “Love Dog.”

Sue, who retired from the corporate world, is a licensed instructor and evaluator for the nationally renowned therapy organization, Pet Partners, of which Love Dog Adventures is a community partner affiliate. They are a 501c3 public charity engaged in the field of animal-assisted therapy.

Love Dog Adventures inspires physical and emotional healing by creating custom protocols for therapeutic and educational animal-assisted interactions. It is an all-volunteer program that utilizes dogs and cats to serve the most fragile populations, such as adults and children living with emotional, physical and mental challenges or life-defining trauma. Volunteers and their animals work in psychiatric facilities, hospitals, schools, rehabilitation healthcare centers; and with stroke survivors and others in similar debilitating situations.

LDA has many programs, but among the most popular is “Power of Pets,” which is comprised of the “Be Cool, Not Cruel” anti-bullying initiative that focuses discussion upon tolerance and acceptance through the eyes of animals. This program targets elementary-age

children and has been in great demand. Any school can request a visit by contacting Sue, below.

A second feature is “Response to Intervention,” which provides specially tailored programs for children and their families who are affected by mental illness, life-defining trauma, Autism Spectrum Disorder and other special needs, physical or otherwise. Each client and facility has a uniquely-tailored protocol to achieve specific goals.

A third popular and equally in-demand feature: helping students de-stress during exam time around campuses. Program animals and their humans visit colleges twice a year to meet thousands of students and spread the love and serotonin. Students have an opportunity to get up close and experience that “aw” factor that comes built in with these irresistible furry rock stars.

Every animal in the program has its story, from a starved, neglected little Pug to a pup with multiple homes in his first year of life and deemed “unadoptable.”

Their stories have been documented as they become familiar to the children and adults with whom they work, so they can be understood and loved for the unique beings they are.

Every animal has a trading card that has been created specifically so that each may tell their story. These are given out and have often helped reach breakthrough’s for those with memory or other cognitive issues.

Earth Day - April 22

By Gail Mayhugh

7 Ways to Make Your Home

CLEANER & GREENER

Earth Day, an annual event, is celebrated on April 22nd across the world. It was founded in 1970 by Gaylord Nelson, then a U.S. Senator from Wisconsin. After witnessing the ravages of the 1969 massive oil spill in Santa Barbara, California, he wanted to increase the awareness and appreciation of the Earth’s natural environment and was inspired by the student anti-war movement. April 22nd was selected as the date because it fell between Spring Break and Final Exams. So what can we do as pet lovers to enjoy Earth Day and reduce our pet’s paw print? How can we make our home a cleaner and greener home for us and our pets?

1 POOP PATROL – We all wish our pets could learn to use the toilet like some of those we see on YouTube, but it’s not reality. So picking up poop is a daily routine. If not picked up it pollutes the environment, plus you have to watch for those little ones who should be in “Poop Anon” for cleaning it up for you. Use paper bags or ones that are biodegradable. If you’re not bringing your own bag to the store, use the plastic ones you get. At least you’re making them double-duty.

SPOT CLEAN FLOORS – Your pets walk on them and then lick their paws. So this is a very important area to read the labels and invest in non-toxic cleaners. As with any number of cleaning products, mild skin irritation or stomach upset may occur if pets walk through a still-wet floor or lick any spilled solution.

CARPET FRESH - Personally I feel any of the powder carpet freshener’s shouldn’t be used. They get into the fibers which isn’t good for your carpet or pets. Just my opinion. If anything use baking soda because it is safer for you and Mollie.

When having your carpets cleaned allow the carpet to dry before allowing pets into the area. This will help to prevent the risk of skin irritation or tummy upset. Just have them spot clean and use very hot water and no chemicals. They can leave residues that are toxic. Even if you manage to get all of the residue off the floor, the vapors and residue can linger and can be dangerous to your pet.

AIR FRESHENERS – You’re just spritzing a little into the air to get rid of the fishy, doggy and kitty smells. But have you thought that it’s landing on your floors, counters as well as any dishware around. Even though your room smells clean and fresh, they are emitting volatile chemicals into the air. I have never used activated charcoal as an air freshener, but there are many articles

on the web on how it is a non-toxic deodorizer. Word of caution regarding essential oils, they can be toxic, especially to cats and birds.

BE WATER SMART – When refreshing the water bowl each day, instead of dumping it down the drain, use it in your garden. We live in a drought environment and the plants don’t mind that Max shared his water.

LAUNDRY DETERGENT – It’s easy to assume that choosing a laundry detergent isn’t that important because the rinse cycle rinses it away. But there is residue left behind on clothes and pet blankets that can be harmful to your pet, especially those that chew on their bedding. Avoid detergents with toxic ingredients.

PLANTS - Plants do help keep our indoor air clean, but so many are toxic to our pets. Before bringing one into the house or planting outside, check the ASPCA’s Poison Control list of toxic plants. You’ll probably be as shocked as I was to find out what they are and ones you may have in your home.

Always strive for non-toxic pet friendly products which will be safer for both you and your pet. Consider that anything that irritates you will most likely bother and be harmful to your pet. As with any product, it is important that you always follow label instructions for use.

A horse’s back is not biomechanically designed for carrying weight. Horses have a well-developed flight response

that is aided by having a long, flexible spine. Carrying too much weight causes the back to collapse, which pushes the spinous processes of the vertebrae closer together. This can eventually deform the spine so the processes overlap or touch, resulting in a condition known as “kissing spines.” In general, a horse should carry no more than 25-29 percent of its body weight including the weight of the saddle. Larger riders should look for horses with denser bones and excellent feet. Carrying weight places added stress on the legs and feet. Horses with conformational defects or previous injuries may not stay sound.

Weight is not the only factor that can impact your horse’s back. A heavier, well-balanced rider is easier for the horse to carry than a lighter rider who is off balance or leans consistently to one side or the other. A beginning rider must learn to never use the reins to maintain balance. Constantly pulling on the mouth teaches the horse to carry its head and neck awkwardly to avoid pressure. This can lead to arthritis in the spine.

To protect your horse’s back, it is important to use a well-fitting saddle. Although the saddle adds weight, it is designed to distribute the rider’s weight across the back. The saddle panels, which are the padded portions underneath the saddle, should contact the back evenly without concentrating pressure in any one area. The saddle must allow the horse’s back to swing

upwards. If the saddle tree, or frame, is the wrong shape for the horse, it can restrict this movement. The saddle tree should be wide enough so that it doesn’t pinch and the arch of the tree should never hit the horse’s withers (the highest point over the shoulders). Pressure sores can develop and these injuries are difficult to heal. If the tree is an adequate width for your horse, saddle fit can be customized by using an orthopedic blanket or pad. There are a number of styles on the market including half pads, gel pads, and memory foam.

Saddle fit is also important for riders. A saddle that is too long puts pressure on

the horse’s kidneys or ribs. The rider may slide backwards and compensate by moving her legs forward as though sitting in an easy chair. A saddle that is too short restricts the rider’s ability to ride in balance with the horse’s movement. A well-fitting saddle will increase the rider’s feeling of security.

Imagine walking for miles while carrying a heavy, lumpy backpack.

Your horse experiences something similar when his saddle doesn’t fit.

Eventually your horse associates being ridden with experiencing pain and may

act up. Before you assume your horse is developing behavioral problems, consider if he may be in pain. Horses are susceptible to back problems and can benefit from therapeutic massage and chiropractic care just like us.

A happy horse makes for a happy rider!

Pet LossAs a child, you may have a pet who shares your secrets, hopes, and dreams. They can be great listeners! Sadly, unless you own a parrot or tortoise, your lovable pets may not live as long as you’d like. When our pets die from illness or accidents, our hearts hurt.

A Child’s PerspectiveI was very young when our first cat, “Snowball” followed my brother on his paper route. The sun was just peeking across the winter sky. Our kitty couldn’t be seen against the snowy rural road so it was hit by a car. He died instantly. Heart broken, my brother brought him home in a basket aided by a kind neighbor. Our dad fought his way through the hardened icy ground to lay the little feline to rest under our crab apple tree.

Snowball’s death was my introduction to loss. Still in shock, I went to school that morning. As I thought about my kitten I could not hear the teacher. I held back tears. Then a girlfriend asked what was wrong. Another told me, “It was just a cat.” As you might guess, that did not help. I did learn that the sadness of losing pets hurts greatly but can be replaced in time by gratitude for having known them.

Coping There are normal feelings humans experience. We each deal with these feelings in our own time. Recently our cat, Baby, and then our dog, Tiger died. Each pet was special and unique. Our lives are different now and we’re coping. Writing is one way to cope. Drawing or reading or talking are other ways.

If you have lost a pet, talk to an adult about: ❖ Feeling very sad or depressed ❖Knowing you cared for your pet ❖Accepting life has changed ❖Focusing on good memories ❖Remembering to respect and appreciate pets and people in our lives

It is normal to go from the shock of a losing a pet through a time of healing. We each handle loss differently and perhaps get to the point where we can help others going through similar situations.

When you talk with your parents, remember they have lost their pet, too. They also have the added concern of your feelings since when you hurt, parents do too. Talking together may help everyone.

The Story ContinuesEven with heart medicine, Tiger died one October day just before sunrise. The night before, I had held him in my arms then cupped his face in my hands looking into his big brown eyes. I knew he would soon be gone. He died as he had lived; peacefully at home next to the pillow we had bought for him so many years ago.

Our hearts were saddened for ourselves and relieved for him. He had no more pain. As you can guess, our pets live on in our hearts and memories.

Will we get another dog? Too soon to tell. If so, it’ll be a new adventure with a unique creature.

In Loving Memory Of

Ebbie MeadeSept. 10, 2005 to Jan. 15, 2016Ebbie was a rescue who lived with my exhusband for 8 years until his sudden death in May 2015. Ebbie then lived with me for 7 months bringing much joy & happiness. She had incredibly expressive eyes & was very photogenic. Ebbie could

lay on my lap for hours & would stare at me with her eyes as if she were looking into my soul. Ebbie’s heart was challenged & she put up a good fight for over 4 weeks. She is gone from my sight, but will live in my heart until that day when we meet again, for love is eternal.I will always love you Ebbie, my heart. YEllen MeadeSpecial thanks to Dr. Nick Vitale of Desert Inn Animal Hospital for his exemplary

care which gave me 4 weeks with Ebbie that I never thought I would have.
