Nació en 1080 en Madrid. Su familia de origen humilde decidió que se llamara Isidro en honor a San Isidoro de Sevilla, y su nombre completo fue; Isidro de Merlo y Quintana. Cuando tenía 10 años de edad, Isidro quedó huérfano, entonces se dedicó al trabajo en el campo. Se considera el patrón de Madrid ( la capital de España) ¿Por qué? San Isidro tenía fama de hombre ejemplar y muy bondadoso con los más necesitados y se le atribuyen muchos milagros. Se cuenta que un día el dueño del campo lo buscaba, pues se enteró que iba a Misa antes de trabajar, pero vió cómo mientras él estaba en la iglesia, su campo estaba siendo labrado por bueyes guiados por ángeles..

Se casó con una mujer del campo, María Toribia a la que España venera como santa María de la Cabeza; con quien tuvo un hijo llamado Ilian. Un día su hijo se cayó a un pozo hondo y de pronto milagrosamente el agua subió hasta el brocal del pozo, devolviéndole con vida. Hubo un año de mucha sequia entonces este santo con su azada hizo brotar un manantial de agua que abasteció a toda la ciudad de Madrid. El rey Carlos

I y su hijo Felipe II fueron a beber de esa agua para curarse de alguna enfer-medad. La Emperatriz Isabel hizo levantar una ermita para cobijar la fuente. Murió en casa y los reyes de España (Enrique II y su esposa Juana, Enrique IV, etc) fueron a su sepulcro para curarse de sus enfermedades. En 1619, Felipe III estuvo muy enfermo y llevaron una reliquia del cuerpo incorrupto del santo a su habitación y fue curado milagrosamente. El rey agradecido cambio la reliquia en plata y el santo fue beatificado por el Papa Paulo V. Mas tarde el papa Gregorio XV lo canonizó definitivamente. Desde entonces es el patrón de Madrid y el día 15 de Mayo es costumbre ir en romería a la fuente para bendecir y beber “el agua del santo” allí y luego pasan el día come y se baila. Como lo representó el pintor Goya en su famoso cuadro “La pradera de San Isidro” y se ha convertido en un lugar de atracción por muchos extranjeros. En 1960 el papa San Juan XXIII lo nombró patrón de los agricultores, viticultores y técnicos agrícolas españoles.

King Carlos I and his son Felipe II went to drink from that water to cure their illness. The Empress Elizabeth had a hermitage erected to shelter the fountain. He died at home and the kings of Spain (Enrique II and his wife Juana, Enrique IV, etc.) went to his grave to cure themselves of their illnesses. In 1619, Philip III was very ill and a relic of the saint's incorrupt body to his room and he was miraculously healed. The grateful king exchanged the silver relic in silver and the saint was beatified by Pope Paul V. Then, the Pope Gregory XV canonized him. In 1858, Ann Reeves Jarvis (Anna Jarvis’ mother) organized Mothers’ Day Work Clubs to improve sanitary conditions. In her lifetime, Jarvis had 13 children and only saw four of them live to adulthood. She coordinated a Mothers’ Friendship Day in West Virginia to bring former foes on the battlefield back together again. She had frequently expressed to her daughter Anna Jarvis a desire for the establishment of such a holiday. So, Anna Jarvis who was born on May 1, 1864, got the inspiration from her mother. One day, in 1876, she heard her mother recite the following prayer after teaching a Sunday School lesson: “I hope and pray that someone, sometime, will found a memorial mother’s day commemorating her for the matchless service she renders to humanity in every field of life.” Anna never forgot the prayer and at her mother’s graveside, in 1905, she recalled the prayer and said,"...by the grace of God, you shall have that Mother’s Day." She became more serious in her resolution when she learned adults in the U.S were negligent in their behavior towards their parents. On the second anniversary of her mother’s death, in 1907, Anna began an aggressive campaign to establish a National Mother’s Day in the U.S. In 1914, after many obstacles, President Woodrow Wilson made the official announcement proclaiming Mother's Day as a national holiday that was to be held each year on the second Sunday of May. Anna Jarvis resolved to honor all mothers including hers. Nevertheless, near death she was disappointed for the Mother’s Day commercial and political exploitation. She told a reporter that she was sorry she ever started Mother’s Day. She died alone in an asylum. Mothers Day is not only a celebration of maudlin sentiment but is emphasiz-ing the home as the highest inspiration of our individual and national lives. And for Christians, we give honor to our mother in earth and our Mother in Heaven. So, we wish a very Happy Mother’s Day to all mothers, and to my mom who has always taught me to walk the path of righteousness, to follow God and his preaching, to follow our religion and to follow the light!

“I don’t agree with those that say these restrictions are attacks on religious liberty. As someone who was involved in making the decision here in the Los Angeles Archdiocese, I can honestly say that it was done out of concern for our people… None of the virtual offerings that we’ve put forward are a substitute for the Mass or the sacraments. We are a stubbornly incarnational church, and we know that the body, touch, gesture, communal togetherness all matter enormously. And actually, receiving the body and blood of Jesus is infinitely greater than watching Mass on a screen. These things are fine during the interim. We just shouldn’t get used to them. I am profoundly moved by so many of my brother priests who have, quite literally, given their lives to serve their people in this crisis. They did what so many of the saints have done in similar circumstances. I would urge all priests to reach out to their suffering parishioners, but always using whatever means of protection they can. Pastoral zeal does not involve recklessness or imprudence.(…) The curve of the “pandemic” seems to be flattening in many parts of our country, and the politicians and medical professionals are beginning to talk about ways to get things back to normal. I think people should be patient for a while longer. One suggestion I would make is this: turn this time of waiting into an evangelical oppor-tunity. In anticipation of the day when we can all come back to Mass, find some-one who has been away from Church for a while and bring him or her back (…) I’ve encouraged people during this time to read the Bible, slowly and prayerfully. I’ve urged them to pick up one of the spiritual classics that they’ve never found the time to read: Augustine’s Confessions, Ignatius’s Spiritual Exercises, Therese of Lisieux’s Story of a Soul, Thomas Merton’s Seven Storey Mountain, etc. I’ve also reminded them that it might be time to take up Fulton Sheen’s recommendation and do a daily Holy Hour(…) just go on Wordonfire.org and you’ll find a plethora of materials, from YouTube commentaries, to podcasts, to sermons, to the daily Mass, to the entire archive of my articles, all offered free(…) and get access to specialized courses in theology, spirituality, culture, and practical evangelism—as well as all of my films, books, and other materials.

III.- CHILDREN OF THE FATHER

1.- The Right to be Children of an Eternal Father

What is our first origin? What is our ultimate destiny? What is what we must fundamentally feel about the contents of these

questions regarding our existence? What is the most important thing we must do in life (…) until it all ends in this world with

death? The most important thing of all you can conceive and imagine is that we have an absolute, eternal Father.

That is why, I come today to give you my testimony about Him, (…) Yes, I bring you His greeting, as your elder brother. The elder

children take care of the younger ones, even in the experience of heavenly things. With this authority, I can tell you (those who

are younger and do not yet have this experience) that you have an absolute Father in heaven, and that you are His sons and

daughters, His children. Do you know what it means to say, “I have always been in His mind as an idea and that He was going to

carry out a plan about me: that He was going to bring me into this world”? This is what the Father has thought about you from all

eternity, above and beyond all time. Do you know that, because you come from Him, you have within you the impression of His

image, and you resemble Him?

You are His children. And what is it that a child does? The mission of the child is to take care of the father. It is not to be asking

Him for things, even though we also have to ask Him for things. (…)for example, right now, I must ask in my heart and my

sentiment that He take care of you, that He do what is in His hands so that He personally watches over your existence, guiding

your steps. But, at the same time, you must progressively prepare your hearts to take care of Him, dedicating yourselves to Him,

making Him known.

He is your destiny, and to be His children is the highest human dignity that you have.(…) Well, the first human right from

childhood is this: your mystical filiation, the right to be mystical child, to be child of God; and this implies, in turn, a series of

rights, as also a series of duties;(…)

III.- HIJOS DEL PADRE

1.- El derecho a ser hijos de un Padre eterno

¿Cuál es nuestro origen primero? ¿Cuál es nuestro destino ultimo? ¿Que es lo que fundamentalmente tenemos que sentir

acerca del contenido de estas preguntas de nuestra existencia? ¿Que es lo mas importante que debemos hacer en la vida(…)

hasta que todo acabe en este mundo con la muerte?

Lo mas importante de todo lo todo lo que podéis concebir o imaginar es que tenemos un Padre absoluto, eterno. (…)Por eso

vengo a daros testimonio de El en este momento(…) Os traigo un saludo suyo, como hermano mayor vuestro. Los mayores

cuidan de los mas jóvenes, aun en la experiencia de las cosas celestes. Con esta autoridad, puedo deciros, a vosotros que

sois mas jóvenes- que no poseéis la misma experiencia- , que tenéis un Padre absoluto en los cielos y que vosotros sois hijos

de El, hijos suyos.

¿Sabéis vosotros lo que es decir que tengo un Padre absoluto, eterno, infinito, que me ha pensado siempre, que he estado

en su mente como idea, que iba a verificar un propósito acerca de mi, que me iba a traer a este mundo? Esto lo ha

concebido el Padre desde siempre, eternamente, mucho mas allá del tiempo. ¿Sabéis que, por venir de El, tenéis impresa la

imagen suya y os parecéis a El?

Sois hijos suyos. Y ¿Qué es lo que hace un hijo? La misión de un hijo es cuidar al padre. No es estarle pidiendo cosas, aunque

también tenemos que pedirle cosas(…) por ejemplo ahora, en este momento, debo tener en mi corazón y en mi sentimiento

la suplica de que El os cuide, que El ponga de su mano lo que es competencia suya a efecto de que El mismo,

personalmente, vaya cuidando vuestra existencia y guiando vuestros pasos. Pero, a su vez, vosotros tendríais que ir

preparando vuestro corazón para cuidarle, dedicaros a El, darle a conocer. El es vuestro destino, y ser hijos suyos es la

mas alta dignidad humana que tenéis(…) Pues bien, el primer derecho del ser humano desde niño es este: el de

su filiación mística, el derecho de ser hijo místico, de ser hijo de Dios; y eso comporta, a su vez, una serie de derechos y

también comporta una serie de deberes(…)

How can we know the way?

Almost everyone desires to have a sense of meaning and purpose in life. We seek fullness of life. Our personal experience and a growing body of research reveals that the sense that one is living a worthwhile life is positively linked to every aspect of our lives, not just health. And this is true regardless of our culture, age, life experiences or beliefs. Therefore, seeing clearly that Christ lived with a mission, Philip wishes to follow Him and asks: Master, we do not know where you are going; how can we know the way?

Scott T. Allison, Professor of Psychology in Richmond (Virginia) has researched the meaning of life in thousands of people for many years and has concluded that our purpose in life is to live the life of a hero. Of course, Christ is more than a hero, but in his life we can distinguish the features of true heroes:

1. You embark on a journey that forever changes your life.

2. You will suffer greatly at the hands of others and you will grow from adversity.

3. You will walk with a team of allies that will guide you through adversity and will assist you in becoming forever transformed by your journey.

4. You will use your gifts to forever change some people

The hero’s journey is portrayed in the great stories in literature, and in many great movies but, most importantly, in the real lives of the saints and the world’s greatest heroes. For them, life always includes some type of voyage, real or metaphorical, fraught with discomfort but crucial in revealing their life purpose. When heroes are challenged by the darkest of life circumstances, they remember that the journey is fashioning them into a wiser, more generous person. They never undertake their journey alone. Heroes find a way to attract friends and mentors to help them overcome obstacles. Often the person who helps them is someone they least expect. Finally, the hero’s journey is far more than mere personal transformation. When he returns from his journey, he will use the new-found gifts to make the world, or a corner of it, a better place Once mentored by another, he will now mentor others.

Each human life is meant to be a heroic life. It is not difficult to translate this phrase into the reality that the Church always reminds us of: the universal call to holiness.

But in our life there are many moments, many events that can weaken or completely destroy what was the motivation of our life. Even if we had decided to lead a life of heroic service and dedication to others. For example, if you have children or others who rely on you for support on a daily basis, you will probably think, with good reason: I am here to love and support them. But if you don't have a family to look after, or have been rejected, or your strength allows you to do few activities, then finding the motivation and purpose of your life can become impossible.

It is on those occasions that we best understand St. Peter, in today's Second Reading, when he quotes the Old Testament: Behold, I am laying a stone in Zion, a cornerstone, chosen and precious, and whoever believes in it shall not be put to shame. As a true Master, Christ always shows us the best way to serve, the most complete way to give meaning to our life, handing it over as we could not imagine.

That is what happened to the seven deacons at the First Reading today.

When we listen to the Holy Spirit, each moment becomes a gift, an opportunity to serve better than yesterday. And we should not squander that gift. Moreover, if we look serenely at our experience as disciples of Christ, we must recognize that no matter what I do to serve, it will never be enough. I am not referring to the quantity of activities, but to the attitude of service, open to all forms of service and without any desire for recognition.

As long as I have my sights set on the will of the Father, in the person of Christ, and on the suggestions of the Holy Spirit, I will find the right way to serve and I will hit the target, I will align myself with the divine will, despite my smallness. The spirit carefully polishes our natural generosity and compassion like a goldsmith, according to the metaphor of our Father Founder. He will show me my next steps.

Said in mundane but wise words: The point is not what we expect from life, but rather what life expects from us (Viktor Frankl). Or, as St. Peter recommends: Serve one another with the gifts each of you received thus becoming good managers of the varied graces of God (1 Pe 4:10).

We have referred to the difficulties encountered by those who want to live as heroes, in our case as faithful disciples of Christ. Certainly, among the most painful contrarieties is the division between brothers. In today’s passage of the Acts of the Apostles, problems came to the surface The community was initially composed only by Jews but they belonged to two distinct groups: The Hebrews and the Hellenists. The Hellenists were born and raised abroad, they spoke in Greek and they adopted lifestyles that their coreligionists considered misleading.

The conflict was caused by the problem of the distribution of the community’s goods. But they evaluated with realism, wisdom and patience the real situation and they came up with a solution to everyone’s satisfaction.

If these conflicts took place in the Christian community of Jerusalem, with the presence of the Mother of Jesus and the most faithful Apostles, who would later give their blood for Christ, then we should not be surprised that divisions arise in our communities, that there are people with mixed intentions, even those who began by living their vocation generously and gradually allowed themselves to be swept down the slippery slope of ambition, jealousy or envy.

The case of Judas Iscariot is probably the one that most clearly and sadly reflects this spiritual process, where we allow ourselves to enter into dialogue with the passions. In a more or less secret, more or less scandalous way, the end of the story then resembles what happened to this apostle who allowed the devil to enter him.

Returning to Christ's response to Thomas, let us note that his last sentence, referring to his Father, is powerful and compelling: From now on you do know him and have seen him.

We always want to see, understand and feel safe. But that is not always a path we can follow. Indeed, in the moments when something totally new happens in our lives, we cannot detach ourselves from who our master is. This is what happens when a child starts walking or when a scientist investigates a really difficult, non-routine problem. In the first case, the child depends on the arms of his father or mother; in the second, the researcher must hold on to what others have already discovered and know the potential and limitations of the laws, instruments and methods he has received from others.

That is by no means to walk blindly, but it is walking hand in hand with someone else.

Since in our spiritual life every moment is different and there is always something new, we also have to continually look to the Master, to whom today is saying that He is the Way, the Truth and the Life. Moreover, He is the answer to Philip's impatient request: Show us the Father, and that will be enough for us. Philip was very confused: the people of the Old Covenant understood that humans could never look upon the face of God and live. Even someone as close to God as was Moses heard God tell him: You cannot see my face because man cannot see me and live (Ex 33:18. 20). But Christ is truly the face of our heavenly Father.

When a newborn child captivates our attention and stirs up our affection, the we often say: She has her mother’s eyes or He has his grandfather’s smile. When Pope Francis announced the Jubilee Year of Mercy in 2015, he said: Jesus Christ is the face of the Father's mercy, and that is one of the truths at the heart of his Misericordiae Vultus (The Face of Mercy). Jesus who is the image of the unseen God, the first-born of every creature, shows us the love and mercy of God by His works, words and, most of all, by His paschal mystery.

Every hero, real or fictional, has a story that captivates us. If we look at Christ as a divine and human hero, the Gospel is the story we need in order to follow Him, not to satisfy our curiosity or simply to admire Him. The Gospel has historical and doctrinal values. But also, in a very special way, it resembles a poem or a beautiful song: the effect on each person is different, but it does open our hearts.

Is it not true that there are songs that remind us of a particular person? And it is not only a question of memory, but it brings to us lived feelings, messages, words from that beloved person. Maybe our heart beats faster, maybe we smile with joy, or maybe some tears come to our eyes. The Gospel cannot be and is no less than that. It brings us closer to Christ if we hear it with simplicity and openness. That is why the reading of the Gospel must be done every day, quietly and attentively.

In today's text of St. John, we find an example of the richness and inspiration of the Gospel. Jesus says that He is going to prepare a place for us.

This has at least two equally valuable meanings for us, which at different times in our spiritual life can alternate in our attention.

Many have pointed to the meaning of a place of rest as our dwelling place with the Father, after this life. Of course, Jesus is talking about a place, or rather a state of joy and gladness, with the same tone of longing and joyful hope as in the Parable, the Prodigal Son speaks of his Father's house. In heaven there is ample room to receive all who will come; therefore, the disciples might be sure that they would not be excluded.

But also, that dwelling place, mansion, or room, depending on the translations, can be understood as the tent or temporary habitation which soldiers pitch in their marches. That is related to the Greek term that appears in the Bible.

This meaning is very relevant for all of us, for it is suggesting to us that right now, in the midst of the difficulties encountered by the one who follows Christ as a way, we already have a place, not only in paradise, but in the family that walks to the Father's house. Christ is affirming that we all have a mission and this should not only encourage us to persevere, but to help our neighbor to do what God expects from him. Who has agreed to follow the footsteps of Jesus, finds himself immediately in the kingdom of God, in the Father’s house and with a job to do within the community…to be a hero.

REFLEXIÓN: Hechos 6: 1-7; 1 Pedro 2: 4-9; San Juan 14: 1-12. ¿Cómo podemos conocer el camino?

Casi todo el mundo desea tener una claridad sobre el sentido y el propósito de la vida. Buscamos la plenitud de nuestra vida. Nuestra experiencia personal y un creciente cuerpo de investigación revela que el sentido de estar viviendo una vida que vale la pena, está positivamente ligado a todos los aspectos de nuestras vidas, no sólo a la salud. Y esto es cierto independientemente de nuestra cultura, edad, experiencias de vida o creencias. Por lo tanto, viendo claramente que Cristo vivía centrado en una misión, Felipe desea seguirlo y pregunta: Maestro, no sabemos a dónde vas; ¿cómo podemos conocer el camino?

Scott T. Allison, profesor de psicología en Richmond (Virginia) ha investigado el significado de la vida en miles de personas durante muchos años y ha llegado a la conclusión de que nuestro propósito en la vida es vivir la vida de un héroe. Por supuesto, Cristo es más que un héroe, pero en su vida podemos distinguir los rasgos de los verdaderos héroes:

1. Emprenderás un viaje que cambiará tu vida para siempre.

2. Sufrirás mucho a manos de otros y crecerás con la adversidad.

3. Caminarás con un grupo de compañeros que te guiarán a través de la adversidad y te ayudarán a transformarte para siempre en tu viaje.

4. Usarás tus dones para cambiar definitivamente a algunas personas.

El viaje del héroe se describe en las grandes historias de la literatura y en muchas grandes películas, pero, sobre todo, en la vida real de los santos y los mayores héroes del mundo. Para ellos, la vida siempre incluye algún tipo de viaje, real o metafórico, lleno de incomodidades, pero crucial para revelar el propósito de su vida. Cuando los héroes son desafiados por las circunstancias más oscuras de la vida, recuerdan que el viaje los está convirtiendo en una persona más sabia y generosa. Nunca emprenden su viaje solos. Los héroes encuentran una manera de atraer amigos y maestros que les ayuden a superar los obstáculos. A menudo la persona que les ayuda es la que menos esperan. Finalmente, el viaje del héroe es mucho más que una mera transformación personal. Cuando regrese de su viaje, usará los nuevos dones para hacer del mundo, o de un rincón del mismo, un lugar mejor. Una vez que haya sido guiado por alguien de otro, le corresponde a él guiar a otros.

Cada vida humana está destinada a ser una vida heroica. No es difícil traducir esta frase a la realidad que la Iglesia siempre nos recuerda: el llamado universal a la santidad.

Pero en nuestra vida hay muchos momentos, muchos eventos que pueden debilitar o destruir completamente lo que ha sido la motivación de nuestra vida. Incluso si hubiéramos decidido llevar una vida de servicio heroico y dedicación a los demás. Por ejemplo, si tienes hijos u otras personas que dependen de ti para su apoyo diario, probablemente pensarás, con razón: estoy aquí para amarlos y apoyarlos. Pero si no tienes una familia que cuidar, o has sido rechazado, o tu fuerza te permite hacer pocas actividades, entonces encontrar la motivación y el propósito de tu vida puede resultar imposible.

Es en esas ocasiones cuando mejor entendemos a San Pedro, en la Segunda Lectura de hoy, cuando cita el Antiguo Testamento: He aquí que yo pongo en Sion una piedra angular, elegida y preciosa, y el que crea en ella no será defraudado. Como verdadero Maestro, Cristo siempre nos muestra el mejor camino para servir, el más completo para dar sentido a nuestra vida, entregándola como no podríamos imaginar.

Eso es lo que les sucedió a los siete diáconos en la Primera Lectura de hoy.

Cuando escuchamos al Espíritu Santo, cada momento se convierte en un regalo, una oportunidad de servir mejor que ayer. Y no debemos desperdiciar ese don. Además, si miramos con serenidad nuestra experiencia como discípulos de Cristo, debemos reconocer que no importa cuánto esté haciendo para servir, nunca será suficiente. No me refiero a la cantidad de actividades, sino a la actitud de servicio, abierta a todas las formas de servicio y sin ningún deseo de reconocimiento.

Mientras tenga la vista puesta en la voluntad del Padre, en la persona de Cristo, y en las sugerencias del Espíritu Santo, encontraré la forma adecuada de servir y daré en el blanco, me ajustaré a la voluntad divina, a pesar de mi pequeñez. El espíritu pule cuidadosamente nuestra generosidad y compasión natural como un orfebre, según la metáfora de nuestro Padre Fundador. Él me mostrará mis próximos pasos.

Dicho con palabras mundanas, pero sabias: No se trata de lo que esperamos de la vida, sino de lo que la vida espera de nosotros (Viktor Frankl). O, como recomienda San Pedro: Sírvanse los unos a los otros con los dones que cada uno de ustedes ha recibido, convirtiéndose así en buenos administradores de las variadas gracias de Dios (1 Pe 4:10).

Nos hemos referido a las dificultades de los que quieren vivir como héroes, en nuestro caso como fieles discípulos de Cristo. Ciertamente, entre las contrariedades más dolorosas está la división entre hermanos. En el pasaje de hoy de los Hechos de los Apóstoles, los problemas comienzan a aflorar. La comunidad estaba inicialmente compuesta sólo por judíos, pero pertenecían a dos grupos distintos: Los hebreos y los helenistas. Los helenistas nacieron y se criaron en el extranjero, hablaban en griego y adoptaron estilos de vida que sus correligionarios consideraban equívocos.

El conflicto fue causado por el problema de la distribución de los bienes de la comunidad. Pero juzgaron con realismo, sabiduría y paciencia la situación real y llegaron a una solución que satisfizo a todos.

Si estos conflictos se produjeron en la comunidad cristiana de Jerusalén, con la presencia de la Madre de Jesús y los Apóstoles más fieles, que más tarde darían su sangre por Cristo, no debe sorprendernos que surjan divisiones en nuestras comunidades, que haya personas con intenciones contradictorias, incluso aquellas que comenzaron viviendo su vocación con generosidad y poco a poco se dejaron arrastrar por la resbaladiza pendiente de la ambición, los celos o la envidia.

El caso de Judas Iscariote es probablemente el que más clara y tristemente refleja este proceso espiritual, en el que nos permitimos entrar en diálogo con las pasiones. De manera más o menos secreta, más o menos escandalosa, el final de la historia se asemeja entonces a lo que le sucedió a este apóstol que permitió que el diablo entrara en él.

Volviendo a la respuesta de Cristo a Tomás, notemos que su última frase, refiriéndose a su Padre, es impactante y convincente: El que me ve a mí ve al Padre. De ahora en adelante lo conoces y lo has visto. ¿No crees que yo estoy en el Padre y el Padre en mí?

Siempre queremos ver, entender y sentirnos seguros. Pero ese no es siempre un camino que podamos seguir. De hecho, en los momentos en que algo totalmente nuevo sucede en nuestras vidas, no podemos separarnos de quien es nuestro maestro. Esto es lo que sucede cuando un niño empieza a caminar o cuando un científico investiga un problema realmente difícil y no rutinario. En el primer caso, el niño depende de los brazos de su padre o de su madre; en el segundo, el investigador debe aferrarse a lo que otros ya han descubierto y conocer el potencial y las limitaciones de las leyes, instrumentos y métodos que ha recibido de otros.

Eso no es de ninguna manera caminar a ciegas, sino caminar de la mano de otra persona.

Puesto que en nuestra vida espiritual cada momento es diferente y siempre hay algo nuevo, también tenemos que mirar continuamente al Maestro, a quien hoy nos dice que Él es el Camino, la Verdad y la Vida. Además, Él es la respuesta a la impaciente petición de Felipe: Muéstranos al Padre, y eso será suficiente para nosotros. Felipe estaba muy confundido: el pueblo de la Antigua Alianza comprendió que los humanos nunca podrían mirar el rostro de Dios y seguir vivos. Incluso alguien tan cercano a Dios como Moisés oyó a Dios decírselo: No puedes ver mi rostro porque el hombre no puede verme y seguir vivo (Ex 33:18. 20). Pero Cristo es verdaderamente el rostro de nuestro Padre celestial.

Cuando un recién nacido cautiva nuestra atención y despierta nuestro afecto, a menudo decimos: Esta niña tiene los ojos de su madre o, este niño tiene la sonrisa de su abuelo. Cuando el Papa Francisco anunció el Año Jubilar de la Misericordia en 2015, dijo: Jesucristo es el rostro de la misericordia del Padre, y esa es una de las verdades centrales de su Misericordiae Vultus (El Rostro de la Misericordia). Jesús, que es la imagen del Dios invisible, el primogénito de toda criatura, nos muestra el amor y la misericordia de Dios por sus obras, sus palabras y, sobre todo, por su misterio pascual.

Todo héroe, real o ficticio, tiene una historia que nos cautiva. Si miramos a Cristo como un héroe divino y humano, el Evangelio es la historia que necesitamos para seguirlo, no para satisfacer nuestra curiosidad o simplemente admirarlo. El Evangelio tiene valores históricos y doctrinales. Pero también, de manera muy especial, se parece a un poema o a una hermosa canción: el efecto en cada persona es diferente, pero a todos nos abre el corazón.

¿No es cierto que hay canciones que nos recuerdan a una persona en particular? Y no es sólo una cuestión de memoria, sino que nos trae sentimientos vividos, mensajes, palabras de esa persona amada. Tal vez nuestro corazón late más rápido, tal vez sonreímos con alegría, o tal vez algunas lágrimas vienen a nuestros ojos. El Evangelio no puede ser y no es menos que eso. Nos acerca a Cristo si lo escuchamos con sencillez y apertura. Por eso la lectura del Evangelio debe hacerse todos los días, en silencio y con atención.

En el texto de San Juan de hoy, encontramos un ejemplo de la riqueza e inspiración del Evangelio. Jesús dice que va a preparar un lugar para nosotros.

Esto tiene al menos dos significados igualmente valiosos para nosotros, que en diferentes momentos de nuestra vida espiritual pueden compartir nuestra atención.

Muchos han señalado el significado de un lugar de descanso como nuestra morada con el Padre, después de esta vida. Por supuesto, Jesús habla de un lugar, o más bien de un estado de alegría y gozo, con el mismo tono de anhelo y esperanza gozosa que en la Parábola, el Hijo Pródigo habla de la casa de su Padre. En el cielo hay amplio espacio para recibir a todos los que lleguen, por lo que los discípulos pueden estar seguros de que no serán excluidos".

Pero también, esa morada, mansión o habitación, según las traducciones, puede entenderse como la tienda o habitación temporal que los soldados echan en sus marchas. Esto está relacionado con el término griego que aparece en la Biblia.

Este significado es muy relevante para todos nosotros, pues nos hace pensar que, en este momento, en medio de las dificultades de quien sigue a Cristo como camino, ya tenemos un lugar, no sólo en el paraíso, sino en la familia que camina hacia la casa del Padre. Cristo está afirmando que todos tenemos una misión y esto no sólo debe animarnos a perseverar, sino a ayudar a nuestro prójimo a ser lo que Dios espera de él. Quien ha aceptado seguir los pasos de Jesús, se encuentra inmediatamente en el reino de Dios, en la casa del Padre y con un trabajo que hacer dentro de la comunidad... ser un héroe.
