LA’s BEST 2010–11 Annual Report
AFTERSCHOOLIS FOR ALL.
1
When inspiration is on the agenda, success is the result.
Imagine you are once again nine years old. You are in fourth grade at your neighborhood elementary school, working to master the lessons educators have set as standards for public instruction for your age group: using fractions and decimals and understanding the basics of geometry; learning the elements of an essay and how to distinguish plot and theme, setting and character. In the best classroom settings, the work is interesting, sometimes even fun. But it is work, and there is not much time spent off-task.
Then the bell rings. The afternoon stretches before you, and depending on where you live and what resources are available to you, it promises freedom — or restraint. Excitement — or boredom. Inspiration — or indifference.
If you are enrolled in a program like LA’s BEST, the end of the school day fills you with anticipation. Your parents may not have the money for a soccer uniform or art class, for a tutor to help you with homework or the dance lessons you’ve been begging for, but they signed you up for an after school program that provides all that and more, for free. After school, you get to explore, experiment, and express yourself and your creativity. It’s a time for you to download and decompress from the school day, and re-charge your imagination. A time to connect with friends, discover new talents, and get extra help when you need it. It’s a time to be you. And all children need it to succeed.

It takes a special person to keep you safe and striving.
The staff of a high-quality after school program does far more than keep children off the streets and away from danger — though making sure kids are not in harm’s way is always top of mind, especially in neighborhoods where the threat of violence is far too common. But being safe isn’t enough — in order to reach their full potential, all children need role models to look up to, adults who guide them toward new ideas and experiences while validating where they come from and connecting what’s new to what they already know.
In his masterpiece The Invisible Man, Ralph Ellison wrote, “If you can show me how I can cling to that which is real to me, while teaching me a way into the larger society, then I will not only drop all my defenses and my hostility, but I will sing your praises and I will help to make the desert bear fruit.”
When children have little opportunity at school to share the knowledge gained from lived experience, or don’t feel free to improvise, digress, and make mistakes, they may resist dropping their defenses — a prerequisite to true learning. But within the framework of an after school program like LA’s BEST, where kids are actively encouraged to share “that which is real to me,” the connections made between students and staff, between what a child already knows and what he or she would like to learn, support the strengthening of skills critical to any child’s whole development — recognition, resourcefulness, resiliency.

The future is in their hands (and hearts and minds).
We like to say — as the song goes — we believe the children are our future. Too often, though, we imagine only the children of today who are destined to be the leaders of tomorrow, and we neglect to ponder the tens of millions who will not be leaders, who will not make history through achievement or infamy, but who will pursue ordinary lives marked by varying degrees of fortune and heartbreak and success, and who, by virtue of their vastly greater numbers, really are the future. And herein lies the challenge to us as a society, as we think about the definition and significance of a quality education for every single child.
We cannot afford to educate only those who can afford it, and we cannot afford to educate only a tiny fraction of those who can’t. And schools will never be able to do it alone.
In order for us to right the wrongs of today — to substan-tially decrease poverty and crime, to reduce a tolerance for violence and prejudice, to preserve mental and physical health and promote creativity and innovation — we must invest in children beyond formal instruction and training. We must provide the time, space and conditions to enlighten, inspire, and encourage. We must meet them where they are rather than where we think they ought to be. We must ask questions rather than provide answers. We must listen.

Values (not rules) are at the core of our program.
Nothing we do is as important as the effect it has on a child. At LA’s BEST, we view the end of each school day as an opportunity. To keep learning, students who have spent hours in a classroom need a meaningful transition — that’s why we make sure after school doesn’t feel like more of the same. Engaging activities are seen as vehicles for creating values, building skills and solidifying peer and adult relationships. At every site every day, we provide “three and a half beats” — a healthy snack, help with homework, games and activities to boost academic skills, and plenty of opportunities for fitness, fun and creative expression. But there is flexibility in the formula, so children know they are viewed as individuals to be developed, not problems to be solved. Each site has the freedom to create clubs and activities that staff and kids are excited about, because children should be involved in choosing how, when, in what and with whom to be engaged. When children and adults play together, conversation happens. And when we engage in conversation, we share our own thoughts and listen to each other. And when we listen for understanding, everyone learns — children and adults alike.
16
Adventures In Peacemaking is a curriculum
that uses The Peaceable Program approach
toward teaching tolerance and conflict
resolution skills to young people. The program,
which teaches through reading and writing
activities, games, songs and group discussions,
emphasizes cooperation, emotional expression,
communication, appreciation for diversity and
conflict resolution.
After School Arts Program (ASAP) includes visual
art, music, dance, drama and poetry classes,
and features artists/educators-in-residence
working with the LA’s BEST children. Each 10-week
residency concludes with a special culmination
event which brings the community together
to celebrate the talent and accomplishments
of the children.
Connecting for Success is a program that
introduces staff to new and innovating ways
of working with youth to challenge them to
think about their attitudes towards their peers,
families and communities, and to learn about
how they can empower themselves to make an
impact locally and globally.
Junior Achievement teaches the LA’s BEST
children the basic concepts of business,
economics and work readiness. The program
includes six sequential themes for Kindergarten
through fifth grade that lay the groundwork
for financial literacy and productive citizenship
in a global economy.
KidzLit and KidzMath, research-based literacy
and math programs developed specifically
for use in after school programs by the
Developmental Studies Center, help LA’s BEST
foster a love of reading and math in its students.
KidzScience, an inquiry-based, hands-on science
program for grades 3–6 from the developers of
KidzLit and KidzMath, emphasizes teamwork
through activities that help students discover
important science concepts.
KidTech is an eight-week program in computer
basics and software applications. Students learn
to type, create documents, graphs, spreadsheets
and presentations, edit photos, and conduct
research on the Internet. Upon completion of
the program, students are awarded a free,
refurbished desktop computer to take home.
Students and their parents also participate in a
culminating workshop to learn how to properly
set up, manage and use a computer.
In addition to the core components we provide every day — help with homework, a learning activity that boosts core academic skills such as reading or math, something that’s new and just plain fun, and a nutritious snack — LA’s BEST has several special programs available to students. These core and enhanced programs provide a structure for after school that is otherwise highly customized based on students’ needs and the site staff’s interests and experience. Moreover, LA’s BEST has a strong commitment to inclusion; staff are trained to support all children in their engagement, regardless of their needs, abilities or challenges.
Enhanced Programs
17
KidType is a five-week program that teaches
students touch typing, improving speed and
accuracy through fun and interactive software
lessons and games. LA’s BEST hosts semi-annual
typing competitions for the fastest students
from each school to showcase their skills and
compete for prizes.
LA’s BEST Celebrate Science Program provides
opportunities for LA’s BEST children to have
fun, engaging, interactive science experiences
under a “team inquiry” model developed with
the guidance of NASA/Jet Propulsion Laboratory.
This program culminates with the Citywide
Celebrate Science Fair, where winning teams
are awarded an “Oceanographer for a Day”
experience through the Aquarium of the Pacific,
where students spend the day aboard a boat
on a research cruise, inspecting ocean sediments
and studying other marine creatures.
LA84 Foundation Sports Program provides
students with a positive team concept and a
method for developing their physical and social
skills through sports engagement. Students
in grades 3–6 participate in year-round sports,
which include flag football, basketball, softball
and soccer. Coaches train and practice for five
weeks with more than 270 teams for each sport,
culminating in weekend tournaments.
Science Explorer provides a collection of
activity kits designed at the San Francisco
Exploratorium for students in grades K–6
to engage in scientific discovery.
Young Authors is a program sponsored by
Target that is based on Alma Flor Ada’s and
Isabel F. Campoy’s work on transformative
education. The program gives students in
grades K–6 the opportunity to discover
“the author within” and in the process learn
self-efficacy, appreciation for diversity and
creating the conditions for a better world.
Zula Patrol, a science program for students
in grades K–2, builds new academic under-
standing through guided inquiry and hands-on
activities. It also encourages written expression
through journaling and introduces students
to new science vocabulary.

Autumn Kidfest celebrates the fall season
with fun activities, carnival games and treats
for students at sites across the city.
Community Jam Against Violence brings
together children and families from different
communities to decry the violence that affects
their neighborhoods. Each year, LA’s BEST
students sing, dance, act and recite original
poems in a talent showcase with the theme of
taking a stand against violence. In 2011, more
than 1,400 LA’s BEST children and their families
attended the 17th Annual Community Jam
Against Violence, held at the Saban Theatre
in Beverly Hills.
Dance & Drill Team Showcase brings nearly
2,700 students together at Cal State L.A. for
incredible performances in drill team and dance.
This annual event provides children with an
opportunity to proudly demonstrate leadership,
teamwork, self-confidence and performing arts
skills mastered through hundreds of hours of
dedication and hard work.
Family Health Festival is an annual event of
the BEST Fit program that brings together
students and families for a day of fun and fitness.
Thousands of participants sample healthy snacks,
play games, receive free medical and dental health
screenings and engage in hands-on activities
designed to promote an awareness of healthy
lifestyles.
LA’s BEST Annual Family Brunch saw its 16th
year of successful fundraising for the program
with a 2011 event, “After School Is a Cause.”
Honorees included Elizabeth Banks, LA’s BEST
Alumnus Morris Vanegas, and Nederlander
Organization and the Pantages Theatre. The
event also honored 21 LA’s BEST students for their
award–winning entries in the “How LA’s BEST
Changed My Life” writing and art contest.
Presenters included Eva Longoria, Cathy Rigby,
Jerry West and Shayla Rivera. The event was
hosted by Michaela Pereira, morning and
afternoon KTLA news anchor.
LA’s BEST hosts a wide variety of signature events each year so that children, their families, and different communities can come together to share in the excitement of LA’s BEST. Year after year, children anticipate these exciting opportunities to perform, compete, learn and play — and build life-long memories of their elementary school years.

180 schools (make that 186*),28,000 kids, 1 vision.
We believe that all children need a safe place to be after school with caring, responsible adults and engaging activities that connect each child to school, family and community — no matter their ZIP Code.
In other words: Enrichment is not just for the rich. If there is one thing we’ve learned over more than two decades in after school, it’s that all children benefit from exploration, conversation and play. All children, not just those whose families can afford it, need time to learn differently, through engaging activities that reinforce rather than repeat school day instruction, and inspire them to discover individual talents and interests.
Our goal is to provide children with this experience, as well as the skills to leverage positive momentum in their lives beyond the LA’s BEST program — to pursue balanced, fulfilled lives. To have a profound sense of awe, wonder and gratitude. To be independent thinkers, have an optimistic outlook, and feel a deep sense of kinship with each other and the human race.
So while the neighborhoods we serve tend to have far more than their fair share of hardship, and parents may worry about their kids’ safety 24/7, we know that from 3:00 to 6:00 p.m. every school day, the 186 sites with LA’s BEST are a haven for children whose families don’t want them just to survive, but thrive.

Map of Accountability and Responsibility
A quality, community-based afterschool program like LA’s BEST owes much of its success to strong partnerships. We are an independent nonprofit organization, but we work hand-in-hand with the Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD), City leadership, private funders of the program, and our three boards. LA’s BEST is a program of Beyond the Bell, which collaborates with national and community-based organizations to provide afterschool programming in LAUSD.

For LA’s BEST to thrive, we rely on the generosity and support of thousands of individuals, organizations, foundations and corporations. Private sector contributions of cash and in-kind goods and services are critical to our stability and longevity. Though we receive significant funds from government sources, we know that only in partnership with private funders will we sustain the organization and expand our services to meet the needs of more children and families.
To our long-time contributors and those who gave for the first time — and everyone in between — we offer our most heartfelt thanks on behalf of the 28,000 children in LA’s BEST.

vision
All children need a safe place to be after school with caring, responsible adults and engaging activities that connect each child to his/her school, family and community.
mission The mission of LA’s BEST is to provide a safe and supervised after school education, enrichment and recreation program for elementary school children ages 5 to 12 in the City of Los Angeles.
values Nothing we do is as important as the effect it has on a child.
Engaging activities are seen as vehicles for creating values, building skills and solidifying peer and adult relationships.
Children are viewed as individuals to be developed, not problems to be solved.
Children should be involved in choosing how, when, in what and with whom to be engaged.
When we listen for understanding, everyone learns—children and adults alike.
