Innovative Instructional Accomplishments:

• Master of Instructional Technology & Doctor of Education—Instructional Technology—I was the primaryarchitect for the graduate program in instructional technology at Mississippi State University, College ofEducation. The original design applied to a master’s degree; however, it expanded to include the doctoralprogram, as well. This was the first, and continues to be the only, graduate degree of this type in the State ofMississippi. I served as the main coordinator for this degree program, serving the areas of: education,business/corporate, government, military, public service, legal, medical, agriculture, and fine arts.

• Distance Learning/Education—Taught several courses in a distance learning format via the first-of-its-kindMississippi Fibernet 2000 network, a fully-interactive two-way video and audio fiber optics network that waspublicly switched. Fibernet sites have computer networks that are bridged through the campus switch and/orthe statewide network backbone in such a way that the system forms a Wide Area Network (WAN) to supportand augment instruction. Courses I taught via distance learning include:

- Emerging Technologies, a graduate-level course that introduces a smorgasbord of technologies tostudents entering the Instructional Technology program of study.

- Seminar in Planning for Instructional Technology, a high-level, high-expectation graduate-level coursedesigned to acquaint educators and other instructional personnel with the concepts of the planningprocess and particular strategies that can be employed to enhance technology infusion throughoutsociety.

- Advanced WWW in Education, a graduate-level course in which students learn imaginative strategiesfor using the World Wide Web more effectively as a tool for learning, communication, anddevelopment.

- Technology Laboratory Management, a split-level (undergraduate/graduate) course designed toacquaint students with strategies, policies, and considerations that come into play as one designs, maintains, improves, and manages a technology-enhanced facility for work and learning.

- SERC (Southeastern Education Resources Center) Interactive Training in Multimedia Technologies.• National Technology Plan—Participated with U.S. Department of Education in discussion on development of

the original National Technology Plan. Graduate students in my class, “Seminar in Planning for InstructionalTechnology,” were asked by the Secretary of Education’s office to provide summaries of all discussion. TheInternet, generally, and the World Wide Web, specifically, served as the platform on which all this informationwas transmitted. The transcript of my students’ work remains on the Web and has been referenced often as akey resource to this effort.

• World Wide Web Development—I have created and maintained multiple web pages/sites, some of whichpertained to classes I have taught. Besides maintaining a personal web page, I have created or developedpages for: National Center for Technology Planning; Seminar in Planning for Instructional Technology;Advanced WWW in Education; Hypermedia for Instruction; Technology Laboratory Management; andTechnology Applications for Effective Leadership. All this activity strengthened my instructional capacitymarkedly. In addition to developing web sites and pages for classroom use, I procured multiple domains andconstructed a web presence for professional speakers, consultants, and authors, including an innovative sitefor authors of eBooks and electronically-accessible reports.

• Internet activity by students—All students in all my classes since 1992 were required to have Internet presenceaccounts and use email, as a minimum, as a means to support instructional activities. I established Internetdiscussion lists for each class so pertinent conversation could continue between face-to-face class meetings. Inaddition, I invited specialists and experts from around the world to become a part of these lists; this providedimmediate reinforcement from some of the most respected individuals in various professions. Since 1999,students in my classes have been required to create their own web site for posting their class work. Studentssubmitted their work assignments electronically and published their work on the Internet so that anyone inthe world could profit from their scholarship. This activity was successful in revolutionizing the way manyclasses at Mississippi State University were taught.

• Desktop videoconferencing—I pioneered extensive use of CU-SeeMe™, a desktop videoconferencing softwaresolution, several years ago to enhance my instructional activities. Over time, I expanded my practice toinclude other videoconferencing programs, taking advantage of the multiple computing platforms used by mygraduate students around the world. I hosted numerous videoconferences via the Internet and broughtseveral guest speakers into my classes to make presentations via the Internet without leaving their locations.Students were able to demonstrate and talk to experts in the field about work they had performed, regardlessof their geographic location. I am unaware of any other instructor at Mississippi State University who everused desktop videoconferencing regularly in classes to broaden and strengthen the engagement of studentintellect. Use of desktop videoconferencing in this way provided a positive role model for numeroustechnology-adopting educators around the world.

• PreSTO (Preservice and Student Teachers Online)—I established PreSTO as an Internet worldwide discussionlist devoted specifically to preservice and student teachers, providing a forum in which they can discusscommon problems, concerns, celebrations, solutions, and policies. PreSTO has been extremely successful inproviding a non-threatening avenue through which students can gain the assistance they need as they pursuetheir teacher education degrees. PreSTO has approximately 800 subscribers on a regular basis.
