JAM-ARANA REPORT by Tony Arana
From the PRESIDENT by Bill Seabridge
The June jam room
was small but we
still played some
good music. Bobby
Giasson couldn’t
make it and my
steel player Sam
Davidson was on his way to Ken-
tucky.
Dave Rietz was there playing his
fiddle and singing. The lead guitar
players were Bill Enyeart and
Nick Dennis and they also did
some singing. My bass players
were Chuck Webb and Roger
Shaw. Roger also sang. Bill Cor-
nett came in and played some
drums and did some singing. He
also did a duet with Nancy Long
and Nancy sang other songs too.
Another good lady singer that was
there was Wendy Higgins-Perez.
Come back Wendy
To our surprise Ronnie Elkan
came in and played music on the
fiddle with Dave Rietz by switch-
ing the fiddle back and forth. It
was amazing how the fiddle
sounded different when they each
played the same fiddle. Then Shel-
ley Elkan came and samg some
songs for us with that beautiful
voice of hers. Shelley, you have to
come back.
Until Next Month, See Ya!

Hello out there. Well
the last dance was sure
a good time. There is
something about The
Stardust Cowboys do-
ing their rendition of
Blue Mesa that epitomizes the heart
of what Western Swing music should
be. Gary and Vicki and the boys not
only had the dance floor full and cir-
cling but also did Jim Rob Wills
proud. The Society is lucky to have
them play for us and hopefully we
will be seeing a lot more of them in
the future. And, of course, Dry Creek
was at the top of their game, as usu-
al. A special thanks to all the musi-
cians that make the first Sunday of
the month a day to look forward to.
July is upon us and the annual mem-
bership renewal date will be institut-
ed. That means a little extra time at
the door updating paperwork, but the
new system will improve and simpli-
fy keeping track of membership. On
July 3rd we will have an extra table
set up where you will be asked to
complete a membership form, pay
for the year and receive your new
blue card. You will then go to the
admissions table where it will be
business as usual. This should go
smoothly according to plan.
Lastly I would like to thank the Lee
family for all they do and have done
for the Western Swing Society. Rose
Ella Lee, over the years has served as
bookkeeper and go’fer for the Socie-
ty making sure we were legal when
the doors to the dance opened. She
spent numerous hours every month
obtaining the liquor license and han-
dling the banking so that the dance
could go on for our pleasure.

Congratulations to WSS’s Rob Shotwell (Bite the
Bullet Band) and Dave Rietz for their upcoming
induction into the 2016 Northwest Western Swing
Music Society Hall of Fame. Way to go Boys. Big
congratulations to all the inductees.
BEAUTIFUL CELEBRATION OF LIFE FOR DENNIS FORD
Over 200 friends and family members attended the Celebration 0f Life for Dennis, June 18 at
the Masonic lodge in Modesto, to express their sentiments and pay their respect. There was
such an outpouring of love and honor by all in attendance. Many took turns sharing and reliv-
ing memories. Photo collages and displays, plus a slideshow, captured his life for our reminis-
cence and enjoyment. His son, Jim, did an amazing job of speaking on behalf of the family and
organizing the occasion and speakers.
Dennis’s death is a loss to many, especially the Western Swing Society. He always made it a point to greet and
socialize with each table of guests, photographing as many as possible, at each monthly music session. We all
lost not only a dear and special friend but an invaluable supporter of the Society for the past 13 years. His con-
tributions as our official photographer, sign maker, and etched HOF mirrors was strictly voluntary. He refused
reimbursement. Pride in his work was evidenced by his consummate professionalism in all that he did. His
ever welcoming smile, kindness, and humor enhanced the lives of all fortunate enough know him.
The family did a superb job of accommodating such a large crowd and also of honoring their loved one. They
made sure it was Dennis’s day. We all left with a full heart, feeling blessed that our paths crossed his.
(A note from Gail Ford Stevens, Dennis’s daughter)
We were so pleased with the large number of Western Swing members that
took the time to celebrate our Father’s life with us. After meeting many of
you, we know now why our parents loved going to the dances so much.
What a great group of people! And a huge Thank-You to Bill Seabridge for
doing such an amazing job in sharing his thoughts and remembering Dad so
perfectly. We will forever be grateful to all of you for the friendship and
love you have shown our parents.

ALBUM REVIEW by Mike Gross
Album: Sing Me a Song
About Texas
Artist: Ed Montana
Label: Six Pack Music
It has been awhile between
Ed Montana albums, therefore, this new CD
of eight Western Swing, Western and Texas
dance hall sounds comes as a wonderful
treat. Ed, his vocals and acoustic guitar is
backed by Doug Jernigan- steel guitar, ex-
cept for Gary Carter on Johnny Cash's Rag-ged Old Flag. Among others, Dave Dunseath
is the drummer, Dave Martin plays bass and
Catherine Marx plays piano. Rory Hoffman
plays accordion, Steve Pat-
rick- trumpet and Zach
Runquis- fiddle, mandolin
and acoustic guitar.
Ed wrote two fantastic
Western Swing tunes in-
cluded in this CD, She's All Texas and the title tune, Sing Me a Song About Texas. Ed also wrote the Texas dance
hall sound of Brokenheart Hangover and the
country oriented Take My Hand. Also includ-
ed is Ed's Western gem, Dos Rios and the
prelude to that tune. The remaining tune is
the inspirational Lord I Hope This Day is Good.
This CD can be obtained from Ed Montana,
PO Box 30091, Amarillo, Texas 79120. The
cost is $15. which includes shipping and post-
age.

President’s Letter continued from page 2
Her daughter Cyndi presently works hard supplying
and operating the beverage bar every month and
does this merely for tips. So at the next dance when
you order that refreshing beverage, whatever your
choice, please be generous with that gratuity so that
Cyndi won't ever leave us. A heartfelt thanks to you
both.
We look forward to welcoming our next guest band
Gary Blodgett and Big Trouble. Gary is a consum-
mate musician that also fills in every month as our
sound engineer. That should present a unique chal-
lenge to him coming up at the next dance, although I
don't think even Gary could make himself sound any
better!
We will see you all the day before Independence
Day and until then have a good month.
See you on the dance floor, Bill, President
Sometimes coming up with something to write
about just falls into your lap. Everybody knows our
Candy Galassi and if you don’t I’m sure she would
love to meet you. She handed me a card at the last
dance addressed to WSS in Dennis Ford’s memory.
“Friends are the sunshine that turn rain into rain-
bows. Dennis Ford, you brighten my days in so
many ways (100’s of photos for my table, dancers
and photo albums) Thank You for being my friend.
Candy Galassi
Enclosed was a generous check for our scholarship
fund. In Dennis’s name. THANK YOU Candy.
Letter From The Editor
LARRY NELSON Inducted October 4, 2015
Larry R. Nelson was born on a farm in Sylvan
Grove, Kansas, October 19, 1934. While in the
fourth grade, Larry started to learn the clarinet, but
in his freshman year he took up the saxophone, and
he began to play with various musical groups until
his graduation.
Larry attended and graduated from Kansas State
University in 1956 with a B.S. in Music Education.
While in college he continued to play in large bands.
In 1954 he married his high school sweetheart, La-
Donna.
Entering the Army and graduating from the Officer
Basic Course at Ft. Sill, Oklahoma, he was assigned
overseas in Germany. While there, he played music
in a band made up of both Americans and Germans.
Returning to the States, and being honorably dis-
charged, Larry became a music teacher for eleven
years, mostly in his home town. But upon his fa-
ther’s retirement, Larry took over the family’s farm-
ing/cattle business, but continued to play music. In
1993, he leased the farm to his son and son-in-law,
and he became a part-time farmer.
Larry ran or has played with thirty-two different
bands during his musical career, playing everything
from Pop, Western Swing, Bluegrass and Gospel.
Some of the musical stars that Larry has played be-
hind are Stonewall Jackson and Hank Thompson.
But those he gives credit to for much of his musical
ability and style are Murray Farr (trumpet) of the
Navy School of Music, Byron Westerman (trumpet)
with the Glenn Miller Orchestra of the Bobby Vin-
ton Show, and colleagues Dale Norris, Ralph
Marterie, Les Elgart, and Stan Kenton.
Larry’s most memorable group was the Hooters
(preceding the other Hooters). It was a four-piece
band consisting of Larry on keyboard, guitar and
sax; Doug Nelson (Larry’s son) on bass, trumpet
and guitar; Kirk Gallion on keyboard and bass; and
J. D. Gallion on drums. They also sang four-part
harmony together and Larry continues to play

MCKINNEY SISTERS DEAN MCKINNEY MOORE & EVELYN MCKINNEY STEVENS
Inducted March 7, 1982
Dean and her sister Evelyn were
known professionally as the
McKinney Sisters and began
singing on radio station WBRC In
Birmingham, Alabama when
Dean was 14 and Evelyn was 12
years old." They appeared with
the Sons of the Pioneers and on
the Grand Ole Opry in Nashville,
TN with Eddie Arnold and Eddy Peabody, the Banjo
King. After working in Chicago with the Ted
Weems Orchestra they were contacted by Bob Wills
and His Texas Playboys.
In 1946, they were invited to tour with one of the
most popular bands in western swing, Bob Wills and
His Texas Playboys. They performed on Wills'
radio program, made a musical film and recorded for
MGM, Columbia and Tiffany Transcriptions.
The band settled in Sacramento, where Evelyn mar-
ried Wills' younger musician brother, Billy Jack,
who formed his own western swing band. She raised
two children while performing with her husband on
Sacramento radio and TV shows in the 1950s. "Mom
had to quit Bob Wills' band, and so did Aunt Dean,
because they were married women," said Evelyn’s
daughter, Billie Jacqulyn Wills. "That wasn't al-
lowed in the band." Her marriage to Billy Jack
Wills ended in divorce after about 20 years. Her sec-
ond husband, Norman J. Stevens, and her son, John,
each died in 1996.
During this time Dean met her husband and musical
collaborator Tiny Moore, who played the electric
mandolin and fiddle. Dean and Tiny settled in Sacra-
mento and Tiny managed the Wills Point Ballroom
on Auburn Boulevard. Dean and Tiny were among
the founding members of the First Baptist Church of
Carmichael. Dean and Evelyn frequently ministered
to the congregation with songs of praise. Two LP's
of sacred music were produced: "Softly and Tender-
ly" and "Heaven's Harmony." Dean was an unwaver-
ing presence in her children's lives and was active in

stage by newcomer Tom Phelps – steel guitar/

dle; Ralph Chase – keyboards/vocals; Nate Brian –
