In the Making Creating and producing new work is at the heart of mac‟s programme – feeding our theatres, galleries and studio programmes and touring further afield. Our studios schedule is jam–packed with residencies and rehearsals, and we‟ll be opening these up for you to see new work in the making. what is live and what is recorded – and how past and future events have a profound effect on the present. Also during September, Dawn Jackson will be developing her intercultural choreography in a three–week choreolab with UK dance artist Kali Dass. Using the classical Indian dance form Odissi as a base, they will explore the theme of Cotton, a subject that historically bound India and Britain together during the colonial period. Look out for the free sharing on Friday 24 September, 7pm in the Foyle Studio. The brilliant regional theatre platform Pilot embarks on a new journey around the region in late 2010, stopping off first at mac on Thursday 25 November, 7.30pm. The audience are invited to get a drink, enjoy the show and stick around to let the performers know exactly what they thought. In Development... Tin Bath Theatre will be experimenting with cutting edge technology to see if they can create live captioning that responds to the performer‟s voice, and therefore greatly enhance the experience of deaf audiences. We‟re delighted to be hosting them at mac as part of Theatre Sandbox – Originated and produced by iShed, part of multi art-form venue Watershed in Bristol, which

James Webb: Untitled States Sat 18 Sep – Sun 14 Nov Open Tuesday until Saturday, noon – 8pm, Sunday 11am – 4pm Closed Monday Free Entry Gallery and Studio Gallery Ladies and gentlemen, your attention please. You are reminded that everything is fine. James Webb constructs situations that court our imagination. In this, his first substantial exhibition in the UK, Webb introduces us to a collection of works which serve to both reassure and unsettle. Here, in the relative safety of the arts centre, the South African artist makes a series of interventions to trigger a sense of something happening, something undeterminable, provocative and ultimately disquieting. With a distinctive and subtle application of sound, image and installation, Webb creates an environment in which powerful sensory experiences can occur and the casual encounter can leave a lasting impression. www.theotherjameswebb.com

Moira Lovell: We Still Stand Sat 13 Nov – Sun 9 Jan Open daily Free Entry Arena Gallery We Still Stand consists of three discrete photographic series, each made during the 25th anniversary of the 1984/5 miners strike. Together South Yorkshire coal miners, former and current, are pictured within the landscape, drawing attention to their complex and reciprocal relationship whilst offering an opportunity for Lovell to explore how context and setting can change perception and meaning within photographic portraiture. Revisiting locations where major political events took place, Lovell‟s images remind us of life‟s losses: the loss of an industry, the passing of an era and the departure of communities built on coal. www.moiralovell.com Supported by the National Media Museum Photography Bursary 2008. A Touring Exhibition produced by mac.
