What is an LGV?
Commercial goods vehicles come in all shapes and sizes/weights but can be broken down into several types:
Articulated vehicles (Cat C+E)
Wagon and drag (Cat C+E)
Over 7.5t rigids (Cat C)
Under 7.5t rigids (Cat C1)
![Page 16: Large Goods Vehicle (LGV) – Safety Management](https://reader031.fdocuments.us/reader031/viewer/2022012417/61726bd3c2c7c736756b07b7/html5/thumbnails/16.jpg)

Vision Restrictions
Whilst every effort is made to eradicate areas around commercial vehicles that cannot be readily seen by the driver, adding in extra mirrors and vision equipment may actually reduce the drivers ability to cope in a situation
Despite new innovations from vehicle suppliers and after market equipment suppliers alike, large areas of poor vision will continue to be factor when considering LGVs manoeuvring on your site
Suitably situated convex mirrors and proximity sensor systems can assist the driver to maintain pedestrian and infrastructure safety whilst on site
Vehicle marshallers / Banksmen could be used to reduce the residual risks?
How many mirrors would a large truck have? 6

Vision Restrictions - Banksmen
Do you maintain sufficient suitably qualified personnel to cover all eventualities for your business?
Can the driver start to manoeuvre without the assistance of a banksman?
Are you directly increasing the risk to your personnel by employing the use of banksmen to manage this residual risk?
How (who) trains your banksmen personnel?
![Page 20: Large Goods Vehicle (LGV) – Safety Management](https://reader031.fdocuments.us/reader031/viewer/2022012417/61726bd3c2c7c736756b07b7/html5/thumbnails/20.jpg)
