Dear Visitors & Friends:

There’s no place like Laredo, Texas! As Mayor of this great community, I invite you to come experience the authentic flavors of our culture, character and warmth.

Come in and experience Laredo’s rich history, with over 100 historically significant designations, markers and locations community-wide. The local favorites include Plaza San Agustin, Jarvis, St. Peter’s and old Fort McIntosh, now the home of Laredo Community College. Visitors to Laredo will also immediately sense the cultural influences from the many great Tex-Mex and Mexican cuisine restaurants, to the Spanish language immersions. San Bernardo Avenue offers shoppers authentic Mexican ware and products. This 40- block mega retail area is one of Laredo’s best kept secrets and will lead to hours of fun-filled findings, all at an affordable price. Artisans’ hand-crafted specialties are common place and store owners don’t mind negotiating the price if you are willing to take more than just one item.

So immerse yourself in a community with a truly authentic identity, more flags than the state of Texas, and a history older than the U.S. itself; it’s two and a half centuries in a modern day world. Come and see us!

Sincerly,

Mayor Raul G. Salinas

Mayor’s WelcomeMayor Raul G. Salinas

An Introduction to Laredo

T his small Spanish Villa, founded over 255 years ago on the banks of the Rio Grande, is now the largest

land port in the United States and quickly becoming the most modern city in South Texas. In 2010 alone, Laredo managed 185.39 billion dollars in trade with the world. One of the fastest growing cities in the entire United States, Laredo continues

to thrive- and modernize in the process-at a tremendous pace. In fact, Laredo was selected All- American City for 1993 and was semi-finalist in 2007. Unprecedented progress and rich history blend perfectly in this city. Laredo is a place where youthful energy and historic character point toward a bright future.

We look forward to extending a warm “Bienvenidos a Laredo” to you.

Laredo: The Newest Golfing Destination

Laredo is poised to be the latest word on the tip of a golfer’s tongue, thanks to the new Max A. Mandel Municipal Golf Course.

Recognized as being one of the only golf construction projects in the United States and perhaps the continent, Laredo has begun to create a course that will play and feel like no other in this region. The experience brings users right up to the edge of the country overlooking the famed Rio Grande. The manmade contours delicately frame the native flora and fauna, highlighting the hundred-year-old mesquite trees and bringing south Texas wildlife within ample view of the cart path. Among the 279 acres, the elevations and vegetation vary and several watershed-feeding creeks create a natural visual and practical challenge for all levels of players to the course.

Laredo has hired a star-studded lineup to collaborate on the project. The selected contractor, Landscapes Unlimited, has teamed up with famed golf name, Robert Trent Jones II as the architect on the project. Topped off with an operator, Foresight Golf that has been engaged in the project from early in the process, the all-star team is working diligently to bring the project to realization by Fall 2012.

Birding

Sports

Local birding enthusiasts have come to describe Laredo as the only place in the U.S. to have boasted four species of Kingfisher:

Ringed, Belted, Green and Amazon. In January 2010 a female Amazon Kingfisher, a real rare beauty and a first North American sighting caused quite a stir with her two-and-a-half week cameo appearance at Laredo’s Zacate Creek, which attracted paparazzi from all around the U.S. and beyond. The news of her presence spread fast and just as quickly, so did the story of Laredo’s hospitality.

Other birds that are commonly heard and seen are the Green Parakeet and the resident White-collared Seedeater. Thanks to a relationship with the Images for Conservation Fund, Laredo now has the ability to show off some of its brush country beauties courtesy of its professional nature photographers and individual landowners through the Pro Tour of Nature Photography Borderlands of Laredo Competition. Here are some trails and parks for your reference:

The Chacon Creek TrailVisitors can access this trail through the following Laredo Parks: Benavides Softball Complex, Dryden Park, and the Garcia Vela Little League Field. This trail extends from the Rio Grande up to Highway 359 along both sides of the creek for approximately three miles.

Lake Casa Blanca International State Park An area often overlooked by birders, is along Casa Blanca Road below the dam, a road that parallels a portion of Chacon Creek, the watershed that feeds the lake. The edge of the creek can be walked to search for Green Jays, native sparrows, and migrating warblers. The lake wetlands provide habitat for wintering ducks and shorebirds as well as Osprey and American White Pelicans. Lake Casa Blanca is a state park and its main entrance is across the Laredo International Airport on Bob Bullock Loop 20.

Las Palmas TrailThis trail begins just east of International Bridge II. It extends for half a mile along the Rio Grande and ends at Zacate Creek. Clay-colored Robins, White-tipped Doves, and Green Jays are known to nest in this area.

North Central ParkLocated in North Laredo, this park has asphalted trails which wind around a beaver pond and boasts some of the best wildlife viewing in the city. The White-collared Seedeater has also been seen here.

Paseo Del Indio TrailBegins behind the river road at the Lamar Bruni Vergara Environmental Science Center located on the Laredo Community College campus on West End Washington Street and extends for a mile along the Rio Grande.

Ranchito RoadAdjoining Lake Casa Blanca International State Park and runs between a lagoon and a wetland. Great place to see shorebirds and ducks as well as the White-collared Seedeater.

Robert Muller TrailsThis trail is located in northwest Laredo and can be accessed at the end of Atlanta Drive. This trail follows the pond in a circular pattern. The trail extends one quarter mile across 21 acres of land.

San Ygnacio RoadIf you are interested in birding-by-car, this is the road to be on. Ranchland is on both sides of San Ygnacio Road, which is also known as the Del Mar extension. Groove-billed Anis; Black-throated, Lark and Olive Sparrows; Painted Buntings and several Oriole species can be found on either side of the road, as well as flocks of quail and roadrunners.

St. Peter’s SquareFound in the historic district of Saint Peter this square boasts Green Parakeets roosting in the old buildings. They can be seen taking off at sunrise and coming back to roost at sunset. Streets as boundaries, Houston, Victoria, Main and Sta. Cleotilde.

Zacate Creek TrailsVisitors can access the trails along the banks of the creek or at the following parks: Seven Flags, Eistetter, Taylor and Cecilia Moreno. The trails extend along both sides of the creek for approximately three quarters of a mile starting at the Rio Grande. This creek at the Rio Grande is a nesting area for the White-collared Seedeater, Audubon’s Oriole, and Black Phoebe. Four Kingfisher species have been seen here including Ringed, Belted, Green and Amazon. No place else in the United States can claim that!

Hunting

Sports

South Texas hunting in Laredo’s own Webb County is a world renowned activity and every season, the prize bucks inspire

hunters from far and wide to seek out and beat a personal best record.

Ranch leases in the area are dedicated to hunting all types of game; even exotics can be found in the region. White tailed deer reigns supreme over the land, along with dove and various other fowl and mammals. For over 23 years the Cola Blanca Big Buck Hunting Competition has been the premier venue for hunters from all over the United States and Mexico. Contact the Laredo Chamber of Commerce for more information at 800.292.2122 or visit www.colablanca.com.

Webb County’s brush country is home to some of the most outstanding ranches for a vast array of wildlife. The season opens in late September and runs through February for some game. Prime targets for hunters include the following: Mourning Dove, White wing Dove, White-tailed Deer, Mule Deer, Javalina, Quail, Rio Grande Turkey, and the Eastern Turkey.

Laredo has premier sport clay shooting ranges, including the South Texas Shooting Complex on Highway 359 and several other private practice ranges. Many of the private lease ranches also feature this activity, so that hunters can hone and practice those skills before getting after the real targets.

Laredo’s own Lake Casa Blanca State Park is a great spot for fishing and bird watching. It is located east of Laredo, off U.S. Highway 59, off Bob Bullock Loop (turn on State Senator Judith Zaffirini Road). The Park consists of 371 acres of land and 1,650 acres of lake. It is open daily from 7 a.m. -10 p.m. Driving south east from Laredo, Falcon Lake, in Zapata, teems with record-breaking bass and has been ranked the #1 Bass Lake in the U.S.A. by Bass Masters Magazine 2012.

Laredo and its surrounding areas offer outdoors enthusiasts ample opportunities to sport shoot, hunt and fish in a predominantly warm climate practically year-round to make your game that much more enjoyable.
