    Presidents Message By: Michelle Ogihara

Determine that the thing can and shall be done, and then we shall find the way. - Abraham Lincoln

Imagination disposes of everything; it creates beauty, justice, happiness, which is everything in the world. - Blaise Pascal

Our thanksgiving today should include those things which we take for granted. - Betty Fuhrman

Dear Good Friends, Determination and imagination have been the driving forces behind our in-dustry since inception. If we can carry that same spirit back into our per-sonal lives, what wonderful experiences await us! This month, the SMTA LA/OC chapter is pleased to sponsor a great presen-tation on “Selective Soldering Process” by Alan Cable of Ace Produc-tion Technologies to be held on November 16th. Please check out the details on our website and sign up right away for the last educational oppor-tunity of the year for our chapter. In December, we have a real fun-filled event planned for our members and their families. On Saturday, December 9th, from 2pm, please join us for our SMTA Christmas Luncheon Party to be held at Knott’s Berry Farm in Buena Park. This will include the lunch and entry into the park afterwards to enjoy the park rides, holiday décor and festivities. Space will be limited for this event so please register soon.

It’s also that time of the year again when our members can VOTE for the upcoming new local board of the LA/OC chapter. Yes, it is up to YOU to decide. Please participate in this democratic process as your new leaders will plan an awesome schedule for you in 2007. Let us show the other chap-ters how much Los Angeles and Orange County members care by voting when the electronic online ballot is sent to you. We appreciate your SUP-PORT! Next up, we have BIG, BIG news from SMTA Headquarters. The SMTA International Technical Conference formerly held in Chicago annually will move to Orlando, Florida and will be held from October 7th – 11th, 2007. The SMTA will also be sponsoring a dedicated electronics trade show that will be combined with the conference at the same venue, the Gaylord Palms Con-vention Center and Hotel. Please see more details on this exciting change on the national website: www.smta.org. One last item to report is that Kathy Palumbo and I were able to attend the SMTAI conference this past September. Once again, we received, on behalf of the LA/Orange County Chapter, the 1st Runner-Up Award for Chapter of the Year. The competition was very stiff this year and we were only a couple of points behind the Oregon Chapter. Well, we could not have achieved this without the dedicated board members and I would like to thank Scott, Riki and Kathy for all that they do. Most importantly, it is the members and friends of the chapter who support our events and a GOLDEN APPRE-CIATIVE KUDOS to YOU! As a last parting note, please enjoy a wonderful and delicious Thanksgiving holiday!

Member Profile Larry Kay of P-Kay Metals

Larry Kay, the young and sometimes outspoken president of P. KAY metal started in the industry in the mid 80’. His first position in the Company started by his father, Paul Kay almost ten years earlier, was poring solder bars into molds with the P. KAY work-ers. Working side by side with the workers on the manufacturing floor gave Larry a deep understanding of the process of dross recovery and also helped provide for his excellent com-mand of the Spanish language. In the mid 90's when Paul retired Larry was the logical choice to take P. KAY Metal into the future. P. KAY is still a family run business but it has grown from the small regional solder supply and dross reclaim busi-ness to a more diversified solder tech-nology company with the beginnings of global recognition. Larry Kay is a hands on focused indi-vidual with a vision. Larry says “Solder will always be part of our core busi-ness but I believe there are other prob-lems waiting to be solved and there are additional opportunities in things such as rare earth metals and the processes that use them. I want our company to continue to grow by look-ing for and introducing diverse prod-ucts and processes that solve prob-lems and save money for our custom-ers.” One warning, if you find yourself play-ing Golf with Larry do not bet on the outcome as Larry’s handicap is lower than the margin on some older solder-ing products. Larry has been an SMTA Corporate member since April, 1999.

Government Funded Program Helps California’s Small Manufac-turers, Assemblers and Distributors Increase Profitability

The program is funded by the U.S. Department of Commerce, Manufacturing Extension Partnership and offered by Cali-fornia Manufacturing Consulting (CMTC) through a program called Small Manufacturers Advantage ™ program (SMA). As a California Manufacturer/Distributor with less than $15 million in annual sales, you can take advantage of this pro-gram. The services helps companies add value to their products increase speed to market and improve productivity and profit-ability. Our Consultants have expertise in Lean Manufacturing, Quality Programs, Employee Training, Supply Chain Management, Project Management, Teamwork & Communications and much more! How do we do it? We schedule an initial meeting with the decision makers of your company and one of our staff consult-ants. The purpose is to share information about your business.

    • What trends are affecting your business? • Where do you want your business to be? • If you had a wish list of improvements, what would they be? • Are there assets and resources your company could utilize more fully?

To address these questions, our consultants research and prepare an initial assessment, then return a few weeks later, with a comprehensive report that includes:

    • A Continuous Improvement Roadmap • Tools to assist you with the self-improvement plan • Resource materials • Identification of potential projects to assist you in attaining your business goals • Access, if needed, to a “Jumpstart” of personalized assistance in a specific area of expertise

Your tax dollars have already been set aside to pay your $8,000 consultation fee.

We therefore request no fees from you! Your participation in this program involves two commitments on your part: 1. Agreement to respond to a survey measuring our success in adding value to your company. 2. If we have done our job and your company has benefited, we ask that you refer us to someone else who can also

    benefit from The SMA program.

I invite you to call me at 619-823-6882 to schedule your appointment today.

Invitation to Start an SMTA Student Chapter

The SMTA is looking to start student chapters! The mission of SMTA student chapters is to build a network of students and professionals and to create learning opportunities for students to develop skills and knowledge necessary to work in electronic assembly technologies and related business operations.

A student chapter may be established at any post secondary school that supports sur-face mount technology, microelectronics, electronics packaging, or related industries via programs, courses, and/or activities. Only five student members are needed to start and maintain a student chapter. The student membership cost is $5.00 per year. You can find the application for an Associate (Student) membership on-line at http://www.smta.org/membership/membership_step_1.cfm. Membership puts students in touch with the many SMTA publications and services. It also provides student dis-counts on conferences along with many opportunities for professional development.

The details of operating an SMTA student chapter are quite simple and spelled out in the "SMTA Student Chapter Guidelines and Bylaws”.

If you would like to start an SMTA student chapter at your school, please complete the "Student Chapter Start-up Application Form" that is attached.

Thanks for considering the formation of an SMTA student chapter at your school!

Sincerely, Sis Sullivan Student Chapter Coordinator [email protected]
