FOREWORDWelcome to CLT, the Language Centre of Leuven. At this centre every year some 5,000 students from di!erent nationalitiesgather to develop and perfect their language skills.

Each of you has your own reason for studying a language. You may want to equip yourself for educational purposes orenhance your career. Or you may enjoy sampling new cultures, want to make the most of foreign travel experiences orjust have fun exploring a new language. Whatever your motivation, we are ready to help you learn quickly and e!ectively.

Languages in actionOur programme is designed to o!er you the course whichbest suits your needs. Whatever your objective to studya language, we are confident we can help you achievethat goal.

Our approach is action and result oriented. This meansit aims to develop e!ective communication skills ratherthan just o!er theoretical knowledge of the languageand phrases that sound artificial in real life.

Naturally, knowledge of the language is essential but isnot an end in itself. It is functional in that it enables youto perform successfully in work, education, public orsocial settings.

Therefore we start out from real life tasks and provideyou a stimulating and interactive environment in whichall your language skills -but most importantly yourspeaking skills- can constantly progress. Your ability to communicate in another language will be enhanced.You take another step towards becoming a world citizen.

Various tracksBecause we know some of you will wish to learn fasterthan others or may prefer to study from home at theirown pace, various learning programmes are availablefor several languages and levels.

The standard courses consist of modules of 120 hoursand are taught on a yearly basis. Most of these courseshave one session per week.

The intensive courses allow you to learn quickly,combining 2 years of 120 hours into one year of 140 hours(2 modules of 70 hours), with lessons organised onesession per week.

Blended learning courses o!er you the advantages ofclassroom-based training integrated with the flexibilityof e-learning, combining 50% face-to-face sessionswith 50% interactive learning and individual tutoringfrom home.

User levelsOur curriculum objectives and levels are in line with the level descriptions in the Common EuropeanFramework of Reference for Languages (CEFR).

This framework allows you to compare the level oflanguage courses and exam qualifications of di!erentschools across Europe and define 6 levels of languageproficiency: A1, A2, B1, B2, C1 and C2.

We work in an integrated manner whereby listening,speaking, reading and writing skills are well balanced.

Below you find a global description of the di!erentlevels and objectives:

Basic User• A1 Breakthrough

Here you start as an absolute beginner. You learn the language fundamentals so you can communicatebasic messages in daily situations. At this level youask and answer straightforward questions concerningyourself, your immediate surroundings and needs.

You interact in a simple way. You can understand the main points in simple announcements andnotices, fill in forms and write short messages.

You learn to communicate in single words and shortphrases. You master the basics both in terms ofvocabulary, grammar, spelling and pronunciation.

• A2 WaystageAt this level you evolve to self-reliance. You developfrom a beginner to a basic user successfully makingyourself understood in familiar situations of daily life.

You can exchange information about yourself, the directworld around you and necessities in daily life. You canhandle short social exchanges, understand the mainpoints in everyday messages, announcements, menusor ads and write simple notes and personal letters.

You become more practiced in putting together longerphrases. Your knowledge of vocabulary, grammar,spelling and pronunciation is consolidated and allowsyou to cope with routine tasks and exchange personalinformation with more confidence.

Independent User • B1 Threshold

At this level you will be more independent in everydaycommunication and should be able to have morefluent conversations not only about yourself andyour immediate surroundings but also about theworld you live in (work, travel, current events).

You learn to tell stories, describe your reactions and give explanations for opinions and plans. You understand the main point of articles and mediaprogrammes on current a!airs or topics of personaland professional interest. You are capable of writingtexts like a short travel blog or film reviews and ofdescribing experiences and impressions.

Your vocabulary and grammar expand, and yourspelling and pronunciation improve.

• B2 VantageWhen you start this level, you have the ability tocommunicate autonomously in familiar and everydaysituations. You will now develop your language skillsto become more fluent in a broader set of situations.

You learn to express and support your opinion aboutgeneral, social subjects and do so in coherent text,both orally and in writing. You can take an active part in discussions, exploring the advantages anddisadvantages of various options. Moreover, you succeed in relating a story cohesively and withe!ect, and can present clear, detailed descriptionson a wide range of subjects. You understand mostcurrent a!airs programmes or articles, even morecomplex lines of argument and can identify the speaker’s or writer’s viewpoint.

Your vocabulary becomes more precise and yourgrammar, spelling and pronunciation are accurate.

Proficient User• C1 E#ectivenessNow is the time to develop from an independentlanguage user to a proficient language user. Level C1means you have the capacity to communicate e!ectivelyon any possible topic and in any context.

Confident of your language abilities, you are ready to communicate and argue your opinion on subjectsrelated to your own environment and broad social or abstract themes. You firmly stand your ground in discussions and can use language flexibly ande!ectively for social and professional purposes. You narrate, present and describe with precision and even humour. You can understand nuances, details and implicit meaning, appreciating distinctionsof style.

At this stage, you have the know-how to express yourmessage in a highly professional manner. You commanda wide range of language and maintain a high degreeof accuracy. Both your verbal and written communicationskills have become excellent.

Develop your language skillsAt CLT we do what it takes to develop your languageproficiency. We provide a rich linguistic environment in which learning can take place. Skill starts withconscious learning and practice of words, structuresand strategies. It is our conviction that you learn alanguage not only to make functional use of it but alsoby making functional use of it. Varied ways of working,language lab and computer sessions, group projectsand team-teaching expose you to a broad range oftasks and promote the development of your language skills.

Flexible programmesBecause your needs and time schedules di!er we o!erregular (120 hrs/module) and intensive (70 hrs/module)courses, as well as blended learning programmes with50% e-learning from home and 50% face-to-face-tuition.Also this year we are expanding our blended learningprogramme with new languages and levels.

Life-long learningWe o!er an impressive range of 17 languages for youto choose from. Di!erent tracks cater for di!erentlearning speeds. For less common languages we havecourses till level B1, for the major European languageswe o!er courses right up to C1 to keep even the mostambitious learners satisfied for the years to come.

And should you still be hungry for more you may optfor additional practice in a conversation class or justtake up another language. You can learn non stop orwith a break now and then. Personal growth knows no end.

A centrally located universitybuilding Our o"ces and most of our classrooms are located at Dekenstraat 4, in the heart of Leuven, Belgium’smost prestigious university town. When lessons start,your teacher’s webpage and the notice board in the main entrance hall will show you the way to your classroom.

Language LabsCLT has 9 language labs. Their purpose is to o!er youthe possibility of learning a language in a professionalenvironment that o!ers a window to the world. Our courses build extensively on authentic audio, videoand online material. Exercising in the lab, will help youto understand native speakers, to become familiar withthe typical expressions, structures and pronunciation of the target language and to gain fluency.

Up-to-date IT facilities‘myCLT’ is your personal webspace and gives youaccess to your personal CLT history and exam results. It allows you to update your student profile autonomouslyand communicate with our administrative services.Most importantly it gives you access to our uniqueelectronic learning platform: ‘e-CLT’. At your convenienceand from your own computer, you can exercise andreview lessons through a wide range of stimulatingmultimedia exercises.

Making your lifeeasierThose of you coming by car andtaking classes in the evening or onSaturday morning, can rent a parkingspace at Parkstraat 53, near ourfacilities. For approximately 30 Euroa term or 60 Euro a year (not includinga 10 Euro deposit) you will never haveto worry where to park your car duringyour class at CLT.

Another advantage available to youincludes a CLT student card whicho!ers the holder a discount for a KU Leuven sports centre fitnesscard, some musea, bookshops and other activities.

More than language learningAt CLT we are committed to providing you both a successful and enjoyable period of study.

We o!er opportunities to experience the language and culture both in- and outside the classroom. This way you can live the language and enrich your language learning process.

A wide range of activitiesThroughout the year we invite interesting native speakersfor you to interact with.

Some class teams or individual trainers have organisedtrips where they explored the language and culture atits origin: visits to Liège, Brussels, Barcelona, Firenze,Sint Petersburg..., wine-tasting in Trento and walks inthe Lake District to name just a few.

You can join us on cultural outings to the theatre, the opera or exhibtions. Sometimes we also stageconcerts ourselves or ‘CLT canta’, a gathering forsinging CLT talent.

Through CLT cafe you can meet native speakers ofyour chosen language. An ideal and fun way to getyour language skills into full action.

How to register for CLT courses• If you opt for a beginner’s course you can register

immediately, without taking a placement test.• If you already hold a certificate of a certain level issued

by an o"cially recognised centre of adult education,you do not need to take a placement test but canregister directly for the next level at the CLT o"ce.

• If you have prior knowledge of the language but arenot in the possession of a certificate, you first have to take a placement test. The result indicates whichlevel is suitable for you.

The number of students per group is limited. It istherefore recommended that you register as early as possible.

Placement testsTo access a placement test, you need to create an accountwith a unique username and password of your choice.Make sure you save this information because you willneed it later to register as a student.

You can take the placement test only once. You havethe choice to do it either online or in our administrativeo"ces. The test takes between 15 and 60 minutesdepending on your level.

Online• What do you require for an online placement test?

A computer with internet connection and a set ofheadphones or loudspeakers.

• At the end of the online test, you are given your results.Only the level you achieved is communicated.

At the CLT o!ce• The test takes place at the secretary’s o"ce. You are

kindly asked to make an appointment.• At the end of the test, you are given your score.

Registration To gain access to the registration module, you have to create an account with a unique username andpassword of your choice. Make sure you save thisinformation because you will need it again later as a student.

Registration fees• The o"cial fee is maximum 1.15 euro per hour.• The total registration fee for a course ranges between

60 euro and 151 euro. This varies per language and level.• There is an additional cost for the course book,

Payment• You can pay by Bancontact, Visa or MasterCard. • Payment by cash or training cheques may only be

made in person at CLT administrative o"ces.• Your registration is only validated after payment in full

of the registration fee and upon provision of valid ID.• Once registered, you automatically subscribe to the

regulations of CLT.

Exemptions of payment To obtain a full or partial refund of the registration fee(excluding coursebook materials), you must present anappropriate attestation which at the time of the registrationmay be no older than 1 month.

If you are registering online or if you are unable to providean attestation, you must first pay the full amount. If youthen provide the required certificate within two weeks ofregistration, the amount of the exemption will be refunded.

Full refund

You are eligible for a full refund excluding the price of coursebook materials if you can prove you are

• on minimal income (OCMW attestation) • supported by someone who is on a minimal income

(OCMW attestation and certificate from the registerof population)

• seeking asylum and are receiving material help(OCMW attestation)

• a detainee (declaration of the director of the penalinstitution)

• entitled to unemployment benefits and are takinga course which is recognised by the VDAB (VDAB attestation)

• applying for a job in a category which entitles you toa full exemption (VDAB attestation)

Partial refund

You are eligible for a partial refund -excluding the priceof the coursebook if you can prove you

• are a person with more than 66% disabilty and canpresent an attestation from Vlaams Agentschap voorPersonen met een Handicap

• are a person with more than 66% incapacity and areentitled to an integration allowance

• unemployed and entitled to reduced payment andare able to present a VDAB attestation to prove this

• supported by someone who belongs to any of thegroups mentioned above (certificate from the register of population)

• have followed 2 consecutive years training in a centrefor basic education and if you did so for 120 teachingperiods immediately prior to the registration in anadult education centre

Training cheques• You may use a training cheque to pay the registration

fee and course materials.• When registering at the CLT o"ce, these cheques

may be used as payment.• When registering online, you must first pay the

registration fee in full. Upon later receipt of trainingcheques the CLT administrative o"ces will refundyour original payment within 2 weeks. The same applies when you are not in possession of the trainingcheques at the time of the registration.

• Training cheques may only be applied for throughthe VDAB. They are valid for 14 months from the dateof issue. They must be ordered within 2 months ofthe start of the course and submitted to CLT’s o"cesat least 10 days before their expiration date.

• The training cheques must be delivered to our o"cesbefore the end of the course.

Summer 2012: from 16-29 JulySummer 2013: from 15-28 JulyDuring the summer holidays the CLT Language Centreorganizes intensive courses of French, English, Germanand Spanish. These courses are intended for studentswho have completed their secondary school educationand who want to improve their language competenceover a short period of time. The courses last 2 weeksand o!er a set of 50 teaching hours. The number ofparticipants per group is limited to about 16.
