ELECTIVE SUBJECT SELECTION

Discovery Surf

An integral part of a student’s transition to Senior School is her participation in the Discovery Surf Program. This programwill provide each student with valuable opportunities to meet new friends and staff by participating in a variety of outdoor activities in a safe and enjoyable manner. In class groups, the girls will participate in a range of activities including surfing, body boarding, a ‘high ropes’ course and stand up paddle boarding. This time will also be used to introduce Wellbeing and Curriculum programs. All activities will be led by specialist instructors and supported by each child’s mentor and subject teachers. The girls will spend two nights staying in cabin accommodation as well as an introductory experience of two nights camping in tents.

Discovery Hike

The Discovery Hike Program will introduce the girls to a rangeof outdoor skills and concepts. They will complete a modified journey suitable for their age and size. In small groups, they will hike different sections of the Great Ocean Walk between Apollo Bay and Johanna Beach. Students will be camping in tents and cooking their meals on portable stoves. They will carry a reduced pack load from one campsite to another. These fundamental skills and experiences are the foundations for future journeys and expeditions.

The Year 7 Discovery Program’s learning objectives are focused on developing relationships, setting foundations and having fun. Our sequential Outdoor Education program is carefully designed to develop confidence and skills in a range of environments and activities over a number of years.

The Compass Award is a program of discovery and adventure.

Modelled on the framework of The Duke of Edinburgh International Award, a program we introduce in Year 9, the Compass Award is designed to develop goal setting and life skills. The framework allows students to be recognised for their commitment to a range of different skills and activities.

The Compass Award is structured over four progressive levels. Levels 1 & 2 are designed for Years 5 & 6. In Year 7, students have been enrolled in Level 3 and will complete Level 4 in Year 8.

There are no prerequisites and students are not required to have completed Levels 1 and 2 before completing Level 3.

To achieve each level, the student creates a unique program of activities over a set length of time across four sections; Volunteering, Hobbies, Physical Activity and Exploration.

The Award is a student-led initiative and the girls are expected to take ownership of their Award and lead the process. By giving participants the opportunity to try new things and learn new skills, we believe they will develop initiative and commitment, and in the process become more responsible and motivated.

Parents play an active role in supporting their daughter to achieve her goals by providing guidance, supervision and encouragement as she works towards her goals.
