LANGUAGE OF POST-MODERN ARCHITECTURE - CHARLES JENCKS
PRESENTER: MANSI SHAH3303
Charles jencks very well traces the problem of modern architecture which gaverise to post-modern architecture. He starts with modern architecture and relatesthe situation. . He sees the main problem to be one of communication. Allbuilding mean something, indeed building carries a plurality of meanings whichpeople read into them despite what architects intended. But because thearchitects have abandoned the traditional ‘languages’ of architecture and triedto design ‘functional’ buildings, modern architecture has become so povertystricken – Jencks call it univalent – that this plurality of meanings simply cannotread into it. Most of us, indeed, have been brought up to think that such over-simple architecture is evidence of social responsibility and integrity on the partof architect.
