LANGSTON HUGHES

• Born in Joplin,1902• James Mercer Langston Hughes• American poet, social activist, novelist,

playwright, and columnist• one of the earliest innovators of the then-new

literary art form jazz poetry• best known for his work during the Harlem

Renaissance

LANGSTON’S CHILDHOOD• His father left the family and divorced his

mother• Live with his grandma since his mother left for

employment• After his grandmother died, went to live with

his family’s friend• Had been elected as the class poet during

• Died in his 65’s• died from complications after abdominal

surgery, • related to prostate cancer• ashes are interred beneath a floor medallion in

the middle of the foyer in the Arthur Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture

LANGSTON HUGHESPOLITICAL VIEW

•Drawn to the promise of Communism

•One of the group of black people who went to the soviet union to make a film

•The film was never made

•He was able to travel freely in the communist state

• Involve in supporting communist like writing a poem ‘a new song’ and other poetry which was publish in CPUSA newspaper

• Also show support for the republican faction during Spanish civil war, by travelling to Spain as a correspondent to other various African-American newspaper

• Also join other communist related organization such as John Reed Club and League Of Struggle For Negro Rights.

• He was a sympathizer rather than an active member

• He did not like the black American people to involve in the war but then support the war effort after deciding that the war service would aid their struggle in civil right.

• He was also accused to be an active member of the communist by many political right even though he is not an active member of the communist.

• He then quit as a communist which lead him to be rebuked by the left wing radical which was once support him.
