Langley Township is hosting a private forum on Nov. 24 for mayors, councillors, bylaw officers and police from around the Lower Mainland. The info session will try to hash out a stronger, and uniform, bylaw for scrap metal. “As it stands, thieves will steal in one muni- cipality then pawn it off in another, if there is a lax second hand metal bylaw in one place but not the other,” said Township Bylaw Enforcement Manager Bill Storie. “Everyone is affect- ed in the Lower Mainland, so we need to be closely aligned. A bylaw that is universal will benefit every- body.” “Safety, I think, is one of the biggest issues,” said Township Mayor Rick Green. Langley Township’s many quiet rural roads make it a particular target for wire thieves. Many times in the past decade, thieves have torn down phone and power lines, and even felled utility poles. Several times in the last few months, Langley residents have lost phone service for hours or days because of wire thefts. Green himself lost phone service for more than 30 hours a few months back. There have been public out- cries from several residents who were worried about being with- out 911 service for so long. “It’s putting our customers’ lives at risk,” said Shawn Hall, a spokesperson for Telus. The cost is also a big concern for Telus. As of October this year, Telus has had about 180 cases of wire theft in the Lower Mainland in 2010. A third of them were in the Langley area, Hall said. It costs about $50,000 to repair the average wire theft, Hall said. Telus will have representatives at the Nov. 24 Township meeting and sup- ports both provincial regulations and uni- form bylaws, Hall said. This is the second time in the past few years that an effort has been made to create a broad-based bylaw on metal theft. In 2007, a committee headed up by former Langley City man- ager Cliff Gittens worked to draft a tougher bylaw, but it didn’t find wide acceptance. Some communities, includ- ing Langley City, Richmond and Surrey, independ- ently toughened their bylaws. However, City Mayor Peter Fassbender remembers that a court challenge to part of the pro- posed bylaw, and indifference by some commun- ities, prevented it from being universally adopted. “We’ll be keeping our eye on it,” Fassbender said of the Township’s efforts. Municipalities and other victims agree that there are just a few scrap dealers who are accepting stolen scrap. Hall said he hopes that a uniform bylaw will help police crack down, and that they can be driven out of business. While Telus has been hammered by wire thefts in recent years, Langley Township has gone from being a major victim to shut- ting down the thieves. In the worst year in recent memory, the Township spent about $200,000 to $300,000 replacing copper wire that had been ripped out of street lights, recalled Terry Veer, roads and drainage manager. To stop thieves, the Township started installing special access plates at the base of all their new streetlights. “So that you can’t reach your hand in and access the wire,” Veer said. In the past year, there has been no sig- nificant wire theft from Township streetlights, Veer said. “This system has worked very well for us,” he said. However, the Township is still at the mercy of metal prices. When prices were at their highest several years ago, thieves were taking anything they could pry loose. “We were losing railings off of bridges,” Veer recalled. Parks were seeing thieves take aluminum grand- stand seats. Then prices dropped steeply, and for a time nothing was being stolen. Copper thefts began as metal prices rose following the recession. Telus can’t lock up its over- head wires, but a technological change is improving the phone company’s situation. The firm is replacing a lot of its large cables with fibre optic wire. It’s intended to speed up service, but a side effect is fewer wires worth stealing. “The technological fix has got to be part of it,” Hall said. Local volunteers are usingtheir long memories to fill ingaps in Langley’s history.by Matthew [email protected]

The photo shows a numberof prominent Langley residentscarrying a flower-draped coffin.

The names of the pallbearerswere written on the back of thephoto, so identifying them wasno problem.

There’s just one issue.“We still don’t know whose

funeral it is,” said Lisa Edwards, who is cataloguing a series ofphotos for Langley CentennialMuseum.

Earlier this year, the museumwas given a large box ofunsorted Langley Advance photos, most dating from the 1950s and1960s.

The photos included thosetaken by Advance photographers, and others submitted by peopleinside and outside of the com-munity.

There are photos of car acci-dents, of buildings under con-struction, of May Day events, and of a great many meetingsattended by men in suits.

To sort out the many myster-ies represented by almost 1,000photos, Edwards has assembleda team of half a dozen volun-teers.

The history photos groupmeets once a week, armed withmagnifying glasses, and poresover the pictures.

“It’s a lot like a puzzle,”Edwards said.

In many cases, as with thefuneral, the volunteers can

identify all the participants, butdon’t know what’s going on.Without the news story or notesthat originally went with thephoto, there’s no context.

A photo the volunteers wentover earlier this month, forinstance, showed a group ofpeople cutting a cake. Icing onthe cake reads, “From all of…”and the rest of the writing isobscured by an arm.

Who was the recipient of themystery cake?

Another photo shows a build-ing under construction.

Is it a school?A government building?A community centre?

Another image shows a largemilitary jet, without wings, being towed through downtownLangley.

Doris Blair, Fay Morelli, EllenWorrell, Betty Cox, and AliceJohnson are among the keymembers of the team.

As they sit down to sortthrough a pile of photos, theyprompt one another’s memories, bringing up details about aLangley half a century gone.

“He married a girl I worked atthe bank with,” one comments, singling out the subject of onephoto.

Others recall babysitting fora particular family, or attend-

ing Sunday school with theirchildren, or the dirt floor of oneman’s home.

Worrell said she does the jobbecause it’s a challenge, becauseit’s fun, and because it’s import-ant for history.

“And it’s good for the brain, isn’t it?” she said.

“I think it’s important that wekeep track of what’s happenedin the past,” Johnson said.

Edwards said the group hasspent about 62 hours this yearsorting and identifying photos.

They have made their waythrough more than 500 of thepackage, and have about 300more to go.

A new local group is inviting the publicto a rally on disability rights.by Heather [email protected]

A local disability rights advocate is host-ing a public rally Nov. 20.

Zosia Ettenberg, with the Langley Pos-Abilities Society, has announced the eventand the creation of a new non-profit society

dubbed Civil Rights Now!, a non-partisangathering for those who feel “the way thegovernment of B.C. delivers services topeople with disabilities strips them of theirfreedom and dignity,” Ettenberg said.

The rally is open to everyone and willtake place 1:30-3:30 p.m. at the LangleySeniors Resource Centre, 20605 51B Ave.

Ettenberg said people with disabilitiesand their families need the governmentto be willing to tailor services to the indi-vidual’s needs, equality provisions of the

Charter of Rights to have some teeth, andthe ability for people with disabilities tohave government-funded test cases of civilrights violations.

“Civil Rights Now! is organizing a cam-paign to persuade the provincial Liberalsand NDP to make a commitment that ifthey win the next election they will putthese three ideas into action,” she said.

People interested in attending the rallyare asked to RSVP to [email protected] or call 604-961-0117.

Langley Elks members gathered Nov. 13 for a celebration of the lodge’shistory. Several members received long-service pins.

A local service club reaches its 75th anniversary.William Lion McKenzie King had just been elected

prime minister and people could pick up a gallon of gasfor about 10 cents.

The world didn’t know it yet but 1935 was half waythrough a decade-long Depression.

In the midst of this difficult time came a group ofLangley men who decided to start something no one atthe time knew would be still vibrant in 2010.

The Langley Elks Club was created on Oct. 21, 1935.At its start, the Elks Lodge 259 was an all-male frater-

nal charitable organization. From the start, there has been an emphasis on helping

the community but what has changed is the structureover the past 75 years. Women are now members. Andin the 1960, the Elks focused on children and families.

The Elks Lodge celebrated its 75th anniversary with agathering Nov. 13. The special guest was Dave Hurley, the national leader of the Elks of Canada.

“Obviously, after 75 years Langley has a rich historyas a lodge, and it is made possible by the past mem-bers and the members who make up the lodge today,”Hurley told the Langley Advance.

The local Elks started out meeting in various locationsbefore buying the old YMCA/YWCA property on OldYale Road in 1985. In 2009, the group sold the site tothe Harvest Baptist Church and purchased a strip mallin Brookswood, where it occupies some of the space.

The focus of the Elks, and its related organization theOrder of the Royal Purple, remains on helping others.

The Elks Recreational Children’s Camp Society of BCpresently operates four camps for children at no costto families. About 30 years ago the Elks started the BCFamily Hearing Resource Centre to help deaf and hardof hearing children to age five and their families.

The local Elks also provide scholarships.People may not realize that the local chapter is also

involved in making sure the community has fun, hav-ing supported Canada Day, the International Festival,Christmas in Williams Park and the Abbotsford AirShow, Langley Days Parade, Langley Good Times CruiseIn, and the Community Children’s Christmas Party.

The group meets on the second and fourth Tuesday ofthe month at 7:30 p.m. in Unit 6 4044 200B St. Peoplewanting more information can contact [email protected].

Hurley noted that the Elks, like all service organ-izations, is always looking for members. Society haschanged since many of these groups were created.

“People don’t seem to have the time to commit to ser-vice organizations as we did years ago,” he noted.

But he’s optimistic about the future of the organiza-tion because of the commitment of the members likethose in Langley.

“I’m positive we will be around to service the com-munities we live in for many years to come,” Hurleysaid.

Ron Vauthrinpolishes rocks ongrinding wheels atthe Rock and GemClub workshop inAldergrove. Aboveare some finishedcreations.Matthew ClaxtonLangley Advance

A Langley man has devoted countless hours tocreating jewelry from scratch.by Matthew [email protected]

It was just intended to be a day in the great outdoorswith the kids. For Ron Vauthrin, a few hikes in the late1970s has turned into a lifelong passion.

Vauthrin is one of the long-standing members of theFraser Valley Rock and Gem Club, and a member of theCreative Jewelry Club based in Richmond.

He’s spent much of the past 30 years shaping stonesand setting them in silver.

His interest began when he and his wife Sue were liv-ing in Castlegar. They started going on weekend tripswith the local geology club, picking up rocks.

Ron quickly moved through the stages of a rockhound – from finding and identifying the rocks, to cut-ting and polishing, to crafting rings, necklaces and pins.

Within a few years he was silversmithing, and whenhe and his family moved to Langley in 1983, theysought out the local rock clubs to continue their hobby.

A rock hound’s work begins on a hike. Many localsgo off to Harrison Hot Springs to find suitable rocks, including fossil shellfish and ammonites, Ron said.Others scour the banks of the Fraser River for elusiveand rare pieces of jade.

Once the rough rocks are brought back home, they have to be cut and polished. A small workshopequipped with power saws and polishers in Aldergroveserves as the base of operations for club members.

Once a saw slices off a good section of the rock, thepiece is attached with sealing wax to a stick, and is thenground against a series of polishing wheels.

This can be the trickiest part of the hobby.“Some rocks don’t polish,” he said, and jade and

other stones can by tricky to smooth out. Then there’sthe danger of the machinery itself.

Ron knows of people who have slipped and lostfingernails. While he has never done that, he admits tohaving ground away a bit of skin once in a while.

A piece of rock can be ground down to a specific sizeand set in pre-made jewelry settings, or a craftsman canmake his own.

Largely self-taught, he has passed along his skills toothers in the hobby since the early 1990s. Ron and Suetook their kids with them on many of their early rock-hound trips, and they now take their grandkids along.

Ron is still excited to introduce others to the hobby. The Fraser Valley Rock and Gem Club meets the secondFriday of the month at Aldergrove’s Old Age Pensioner’sOrganization hall, at 7:30 p.m.

Rotarian Wayne Crossen called thefundraiser a “huge success.”

“I think it went very well,”Crossen said. “I talked to a numberof people and they were all verypleased with the quality of the wineand food and the general ambience. Most are putting us on their list tocome back next year.”

Crossen said attendance wasslightly lower than expected thisyear, and believed stricter impaireddriving laws recently implementedin B.C., as well as the HST, had todo with keeping a few folks awayfrom the festival.

He was, however, impressed with

the number of people who arrangedfor safe rides home through taxisand designated drivers.

He stressed the festival is not a“wine drinking” event.

“It’s more of a celebration of foodand wine,” Crossen said.

Each wine festival is more than sixmonths in the mak-ing said Crossen, who is on the winefestival planningcommittee. He saidactively planning forthe event started asearly as May.

For the past 18 years, the festivalhas been held at the WillowbrookShopping Centre. Before that, itcalled the George Preston RecreationCentre in Brookswood home.

Festival co-chair David Taftremembers what a difference mov-ing the soirée to the mall made.

“When I first attended the festivalwhen it was at the George Prestonarena, it was lacking the ambiance

it has now,” he recalled. “It’s beenin Willowbrook for the past 18 yearsand it is so much better as a result.”

Taft noted there were 35 winemerchants and agents at the 2010festival, seven more than the previ-ous year.

Morgan said the festival featuredthe most wineries everand the restaurants andcaterer outdid themselves.

Over the past twodecades, more than$700,000 has been raisedfor local causes includ-

ing the Boys and Girls Clubs, IshtarTransition Housing Society, LangleyMemorial Hospital, Douglas ParkCommunity School, Big Brothers BigSisters of Langley, and the LangleyCommunity Music School.

The club will now decide how tospend the money, but it will be tar-geted to causes that help children.

“We’re going to specifically dedi-cate it to kids at risk,” Morganexplained.

City lot rules expectedto remain unchangedLangley City staff planned to recommend councildoesn’t go ahead with allowing more homes onfewer lots.by Heather [email protected]

Langley City residents don’t want smaller lots, a senti-ment made clear at four recent public meetings.

In light of the public disapproval of the idea, City staffare recommending City council leave things as they are,and not change the rules to allow smaller lots withinneighbourhoods south of the Nikomekl River.

The City-commissioned report on public sentimentcame up at the Nov. 15 council meeting detailing theviews expressed at the public meetings as well asthrough the online survey and in letters submitted tothe municipality.

City council was expected to review the report anddebate the issue at Monday’s meeting, the results ofwhich were not available before press time.

A new program suggests dates, based on budget and interests.

by Matthew [email protected]

A Langley company is trying tocome to the rescue of those whocan’t come up with date ideasbeyond dinner and a movie.

Joey Peters and Jason Ballard’sBlue Door Apps has just createdDateBank, available for the iPhone.

Ballard, who has been married fora year and a half, said he alwayswanted to come up with interestingideas for new dates with his wife.

The idea for DateBank was oneof a large number he brainstormedwith Peters when they decided tobreak into the world of mobile apps.

Working with a programmer, theycreated a system that allows usersto pick the style, budget, and timeof day for a date. It then spits outa variety of options, along withdescriptions of what’s needed, andtips for making things go smoothly.

The 99 cent app so far has a five-star approval rating from its buyers.

“All the feedback has beenextremely positive,” Ballard said.

The pair tapped Langley TownshipCouncillor Jordan Bateman to do thewriting for the entries, and he addeda few ideas to the 100-plus they had

already created. As a married man with three kids,

Bateman said, it’s been a whilesince he thought about going on afirst date.

“I had to think waaaaayyyy back,”he said.

But his wife was a big asset, asshe could give the thumbs up ordown to his ideas.

Some of the suggested datesinclude a tea party for two, bakingup some goodies at home, or head-ing out to geocache.

Ballard and Peters plan on cre-ating a number of apps, both forthemselves and others. The globalreach of the Apple app store meansit’s full of potential, Ballard said.

Our View

Try out stonecold sobriety

Rich Coleman’s remarks about the newdrinking and driving rules are not helpingdrivers, pub owners, or police.

The MLA for Fort Langley-Aldergrovesaid people have “misinterpreted” therules to mean that they can’t have a drinkat all and get behind the wheel.

But hasn’t that been the message of thegovernment, police, ICBC, and MADD foryears? The days when it was considerednormal to have a drink, or two, or six, andweave your way home are long gone.

The tough new rules only changedthe penalties for hitting various stages ofdrunk driving, including longer drivingsuspensions for those who were caughtwith more than .05 blood alcohol content.

It has long been considered dangerousto have that much booze in your system. The problem with people who drink anddrive is often that they either play downhow much they’ve had to drink, or thatthey believe they “can hold their liquor.”

Coleman is the top cop for a govern-ment that has promised it will be toughon crime. For him to suggest that cops arebeing too harsh with legislation that hisown government introduced is strange.

If people are too afraid now to haveone or two drinks with dinner, good. Ifthe new rules cause more people to takea cab, or assign a designated driver, thatwill undoubtedly save lives.

As for bar and restaurant owners losingmoney – tough. Our society has beenmoving towards a saner appreciation ofthe dangers of drunk driving for morethan half a century. If that costs bars afew bucks, it’s nothing compared to thehuman lives that could be saved.

Ask any Mounties who have pulledover drunks, or who have cleaned up aftera fatal alcohol-fueled crash, whether theyprefer drivers to have one or two drinks,or none before hitting the road.

Welcome to Rrrrrace Night in Vick! Torria, ladeees and gennellmen!

Post time for the Premier Stakes has not yetbeen announced, but already we have somemanoeuvring at the gate, as the early favour-ites jostle for position.

We’re looking for a long-track winner thisevening, ladeees and gennellmen, so there’sstill plenty of time to get your bets down.

Let’s look at some of the likely contenders.Solicitor General – one of the early favourites

from Inner Circle Stables – likesto come in from the right side onthe stretch, and has proven in pastperformances that he can handle amuddy road – and yesss, ladeeesand gennellmen, we’re expectingrace day to run on a dirty track.

Like all the top runners, he’s notofficially registered for the race yet,but he’s been out on the warm-uptrack practically every day since Gordo theGreat dropped his crown on a double-tongueto make way for a successor to his title.

The recently re-named Solicitor General, whoalso runs under the monicker of Social Houser,is packing extra weight in this go-round, buthe and his handlers have been throwing offsome handicaps to better the odds.

Like some of the others in the warm-uppens, Solicitor General has been spilling grainfrom the stable – apparently willing to top upthe feed-bags of those still standing out in thecold – tried and trusted means of developingbetter Leg support.

He’s also put some of the new track condi-tions on review. Some barn-owners have beencomplaining that trough restrictions are leav-ing some of their better-paying horses thirstyat closing time.

The review is a nice touch: while some ofthe heavy bettors want to loosen things back

up, most of the moderate wagerers are contentas is, and some want to close the taps somemore. One thing they all can take safely to thebetting windows: results of the review won’tbe available until after race day.

An ironic touch: Solicitor General, in an ear-lier incarnation, hung back out of the pack tohelp his stable-mate Gordo the Great retain hislead after sipping too heavy from that trough.

Reviewing the track drinking restrictions isby no means a stall tactic restricted to SolicitorGeneral.

A hike in minimum pay for jockeys is also“being considered” by some front runners– despite a caution by To Face Financeer (onceone of the top wing-waiters, and now still withan outside chance to enter the Stakes) thathe controls the books, and he’s not planningany serious track-grooming until race day is

close… or past.Highways to Health is another

of the Inner Circle touted tomake a strong finish in thePremier Stakes. The oddsmakersare having trouble putting num-bers to this contender. Whilesome have him overpassing hisprime, others are still expectinghim to bridge some gaps with

his unique Gateway Gambit style – a style thatfavoured his previous open road running, butwhich may not fair so well from a hospitalbed.

Announcing himself as a strong contenderis New in Education – completing the cur-rent trifecta of inner circle favourites. Newin Education left the hospital beds (currentlyoccupied by Highways to Health) to ride onGordo the Great’s flank, before shifting to anew school of thought.

But the big money today, ladeees and gen-nellmen, is still outside the Inner Circle.

And so far, that’s a pretty lonely side ofthe track. The top fillies expected in the run-ning, TeeVee Taylor and Surrey on Top, haveboth come up lame, as has last winter’s stud,Olympic Furlong.

Moooore as we ride clossssser to rrrace day!Visit Bob Groeneveld’s blog, Editor’s Notes, at http://tiny.cc/v7b94

Dear Editor,Remembrance Day servi-

ces have been held on andoff at the Fort Langley ceno-taph since the dedication ofthe monument in 1920.

This year’s high level ofattendance is a clear indica-

tion of residents’ continuingcommitment to remember-ing the tens of thousandsof Canadian servicemenand women who sacrificedtheir lives to preserve ourfreedom.

The Fort Langley service

was a highly moving one, with much of the creditdue to the efforts of thecommunity’s youth: an 11-year-old soloist, a choir ofteenaged students, and doz-ens of members of NorthLangley’s Scouting andGuiding movements.

The enthusiastic and car-ing participation of theseyoung people is a clearindication that the torchof remembrance continuesto be passed between thegenerations and instils con-siderable hope for our col-lective future.

We would like to thankthe Advance for buildingpublic awareness of thisseason of remembrance.

We would also like toacknowledge the financialcontributions and volunteereffort of community mem-bers and local organiza-tions. The event would nothave been possible withouttheir kind assistance.

Remembrance Day

Fort’s service movingDear Editor,

I have attended many Remembrance Day services inLangley. The most memorable one will be the ceremony Iviewed in Fort Langley this year.

It was fortuitous that I attended, but the reason wascompelling: my friend Don, an ex-member of the PrincessPatricia’s Canadian Light Infantry, was meeting anotherPatricia who had recently returned from Afghanistan.

When we met, we represented three generations of theregiment.

The service was magnificently orchestrated, with throngsof onlookers enjoying the ceremony. The sound was bril-liantly audible to all, as it carried the well crafted messagesof remembering, bracketed by the outstanding singing ofsoloist Cole Armour and the piping of Carl Hampson.

The Fort Langley Remembrance Day Committee, all theparticipants, and sponsors are to be warmly congratulatedfor creating a most memorable day.

Not to be forgotten, either, are those wonderful airmenwho have entertained us all for so many years. Well done!

Mike Harvey, Langley

Dear Editor,With all the good and bad

news about our federal gov-ernment and Canada in gen-eral, it is difficult for mostpeople to decide whereCanada actually stands inrelation to other countries, and if our country is doinga good or bad job as a dem-ocracy.

Two recent reports help toclarify the situation.

The Economic Freedom of

the World report for 2010,published each year andreporting on 141 countries, lists us as number seven.

All countries are judgedon standard criteria: size ofgovernment, expenditures, taxes, and enterprises; legalstructure and security ofproperty rights; access tosound money; freedom oftrade internationally; andregulation of credit, labour, and business.

The result decides thestanding of each country.

Another report is theCorruption Index, whichrates countries as to corrup-tion in government, busi-ness, and industry.

In this report, Canada isin the top 10 countries. Thereport clearly relates to theEconomic Freedom report,as the same countries are atthe top in both.

The top 10 countries, from the top down, areHong Kong, Singapore, NewZealand, Switzerland, Chile,United States, Canada,Australia, Mauritius, andthe United Kingdom.

The worst 10 countriesfrom the bottom up areZimbabwe, Myanmar,Angola, Venezuela, CongoRepublic, Central AfricanRepublic, Guinea-Bissau,Burundi, Congo DemocraticRepublic, and Algeria.

Before the current federalgovernment was elected,Canada was in 13th place,so it is obvious things haveimproved, but we could stilldo better.

With our people, resour-ces, land area, education, and climate, there is noreason why we should notbe number one. Let us allwork to ensure we stay ontrack to eventually be num-ber one.

Democracy gone awryDear Editor,

Bob Moats [Simple concept hard to grasp, Nov. 12Letters, Langley Advance] needs to go back and read the cor-rect definition of democracy.

Langley Township electors have had the privilege everythree years to elect our councillors, and that includes thesix with whom Mr. Moats seems to disagree.

We have never had the opportunity to elect anyAgricultural Land Commission member.

To allow two unelected individuals to override six electedcouncillors is very undemocratic.

Mr. Moats seems more interested in name-calling than heis in supporting our democracy.

Hopefully, democracy will win and our elected officialswill do their job. They are the ones we elected to maketough decisions.

The Langley Christmas Bureau isbracing for increased need thisholiday season.by Heather [email protected]

Take one look outside and it’seasy to see that fundraising in thiskind of blustery wet weather takesreal commitment.

So when the Langley LionsClub shows up at the LangleyChristmas Bureau with a chequefor $9,753.67, the volunteers atthe bureau know it’s money hard-earned.

Club president Irene Stokesexplained that the members arehelped in their fundraising by theLangley Leos Club (the group foryounger members), the Fort LangleyLions, the Think Referrals BusinessNetwork, and friends and relatives.

They were out during the 2009holiday season accepting dona-tions in Lions kettles, the results ofwhich were donated at the bureau’sopen house last week.

There will be fundraisers out

again this holiday season for fourweekends (Friday through Sunday)including the provincial liquor storeon Fraser Highway, Save-On Foodsin Willowbrook, the IGA in WalnutGrove and the Buy Low Foods inBrookswood.

Their work will be vital as thebureau heads into its 37thyear of operation.

“We’ve already hadover 100 register,” saidJim McGregor, the bur-eau’s co-director.

That’s on par withnumbers at this time lastyear. In 2009, the bur-eau helped 750 families, including 1,200 children. He noted that the bureauhas been in touch with the LangleyFood Bank and the Gateway ofHope shelter as demand for theirservices is a good litmus test forwhat the bureau can expect.

“We’ve been told to expect anincrease,” he said.

The bureau also just received acontribution of 1,600 books fromthe Langley Literacy Association.

“Every child that comes through[the bureau] gets a new book,”

explained Kim Davidson, with theassociation.

As well the bureau receivesper-capita help from the LowerMainland Christmas Bureau.

“We’re still the only totally vol-unteer Christmas bureau in theLower Mainland,” McGregor said.

Because of that,99 cents of everydollar donatedgoes to the cause.

The bureauoffice in Langley(20560 FraserHwy.) is openMonday to Friday10 a.m. to 4 p.m.and 10 a.m. to 2p.m. Saturdays. It

closes Dec. 18.The satellite office in Aldergrove

(at the Horse Council of B.C. office,27336 Fraser Hwy.) is open to Dec.9, and operates 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.on Wednesdays and Thursdays.

Gift donations can be droppedoff at the bureaus as well as theLangley Advance office.

Volunteers hacked atinvasive weeds andrescued long-forgottenapple trees.

by Matthew [email protected]

Members of the DerbyReach Brae Island ParkAssociation pulled ontheir boots and gloveslast week to tackle thescourge of blackberries.

Volunteers took part ina Blackberry Pull, onewhich had nothing todo with cellphones andeverything to do withprotecting the environ-ment.

According to LisaDreves of the LangleyEnvironmental PartnersSociety, the group hauledout five truck loads ofHimalayan and cutleaf

blackberry on Nov. 9.The purpose of the pull

was to free trees thathad been slowly over-whelmed by the black-berry bushes over manyyears.

Foreign varieties ofblackberry are an inva-sive species, one that caneasily overwhelm anddestroy just about anynative vegetation in theLower Mainland.

Only dense shade canhalt the blackberry’sspread.

The team that tookout the vines had a greattime, Dreves said.

Not only did they freea number of native treesthat were being over-whelmed, they found anancient apple tree.

Many old orchards andsingle apple trees canstill be found aroundrural Langley, datingback to the days when

the area was first settledby Europeans in the mid-to late-19th century.

The hacked up black-berry vines were hauledout by Metro VancouverParks, which has part-nered with the club tohelp preserve the park’snatural ecosystems.

The attack on theblackberry bushes wasjust one of the DerbyReach association’srecent efforts. Earlier thisyear they held an ivypull to go after anotherinvasive plant that canstrangle native trees.

Like ivy, blackberriesand other invasive spe-cies are often brought toCanada as ornamentalplants. They eitherspread from backyardsinto parks slowly, orirresponsible gardenersdump their cuttings andcompost into parklands, letting them take root.

Matthew Claxton/Postmedia NetworkCracks in the Golden Ears Bridge are not unexpected, and are being sealed as they appear, mostly at on-ramps and off-ramps.

Golden Ears Bridge

Sealant removescrack concernsCracks have appeared in the bridge from Langleyto Maple Ridge.by Matthew [email protected].

Cracks in the Golden Ears Bridge are nothing to worryabout – in fact, TransLink says they were anticipatedwhen the bridge was being built.

Networks of cracks on several sections of the bridge, particularly near the off-ramps and on-ramps, hasdeveloped over the past several months.

The cracks have all been filled with a sealant andaren’t developing into anything larger, TransLink staffhave reported.

The cause of the cracks, according to TransLinkspokesperson Drew Snider, was the temperature whensome sections of concrete were being poured.

Because it was warm then, builders knew the concretewould change shape and crack later.

Golden Crossing, the company that built and main-tains the bridge, is responsible for sealing up the cracksas they appear.

The Chiefs put the bite onthe visiting Alberni ValleyBulldogs Saturday.by Troy [email protected]

The Langley Chiefs had morethan one reason to feel good fol-lowing Saturday night’s BritishColumbia Hockey League gameat the Langley Events Centre.

First and foremost, theydoubled the Alberni ValleyBulldogs 4-2, thanks to a solidteam effort that saw some unlike-ly scoring heroes – defencemenBrad Haber and Tyler Miller– find the net in the third period.

Just as encouraging was thenumber of fans who venturedout to the LEC on a drizzlySaturday night in November towatch them play.

A recorded attendance of 2,831took in the game, the second lar-gest crowd of the season.

The Chiefs held the Bulldogs to28 shots during the game, whichwas tied 2-2 after two periods.

Haber scored the game winner, his first of the campaign, 2:15into the third period to put the

Chiefs ahead 3-2.Miller sealed the win with 22

seconds remaining in regulationwhen he scored into the emptynet, with Bulldogs’ goaltenderFrank Slubowski pulled for theextra attacker.

Chiefs head coach Harvey Smylsaid it wasn’t a perfect game, buthe’ll take the win.

“I thought it was a very enter-taining hockey game, with lotsof effort from everybody on theice and lots of chances offen-sively,” Smyl said. “While it wasan entertaining game to watch,we hoped we could be a little bitbetter defensively, but the guysare making some strides.”Coquitlam Express 4, Chiefs 2Saturday’s win was also key in

regaining some momentum for aChiefs team that had lost 4-2 tothe Coquitlam Express the nightbefore at the Coquitlam SportsCentre.

The Express scored goals 28seconds apart in the third periodto take a 3-2 lead, then scored anempty netter with two secondsleft in regulation.

Langley went ahead 2-1 ona powerplay goal from BradMcBride at the 3:23 mark of thethird period.

The Express tied the gamewith a powerplay goal of theirown from Massimo Lamacchia11:36 into the final frame, thenjumped ahead by a goal at the12:04 mark with a goal fromAlex Petan.

After a scoreless first period,Lamacchia got the Express on

the scoreboard midway throughthe middle stanza.

Just 1:46 after Lamacchia’sgoal, Langley’s Brandon Scholtenpotted his second of the seasonto tie the score at 1-1.

The Express outshot the visit-ing Chiefs by a narrow 33-32margin.

Chiefs 6, Victoria Grizzlies 1In arguably the Chiefs’ most

complete road effort of the sea-son, they dominated the VictoriaGrizzlies 6-1 Wednesday atVictoria’s Bear Mountain Arena.

The Chiefs led 1-0 after thefirst period, 3-1 after 40 minutes, and tallied three goals in thefinal frame to seal the victory.

The Chiefs powerplay waseffective, going 2-5. Both ofLangley’s powerplay goals, fromDarnell Dyck and Josh Hansen, came in the latter stages of thethird period.

Langley’s Josh Myers set thetone by scoring 26 seconds intothe game, in what turned out tobe the only goal of the openingperiod.

Despite losing by five goals, the Grizzlies outshot the Chiefs42-37. Chiefs goalie Wyatt Galleymade 41 stops and was namedfirst star of the game.

ICE CHIPS: The Chiefs are cur-rently 15-8-0-4, and sit alone insecond place behind front run-ning Powell River in the eight-team BCHL Coastal Conference.

They return to the LEC iceWednesday when they hostCoquitlam.

Game time is 7 p.m.

Langley Chiefs winger Matt Ius and Alberni Valley Bulldogs goaltender Frank Slubowskifollowed the bouncing puck Saturday at the Langley Events Centre. Ius and the Chiefsdowned the Bulldogs 4-2.

A glitch didn’t take the shineoff another night at the fightsin Langley City.

The fifth installment of the Clashat the Cascades amateur boxingseries took a few hits, but stayedon its feet.

With no main event on thebooks for the mid-week card, heldWednesday at the Coast Hotel &Convention Centre, Clash 5 didn’tlive up to its predecessors.

The series has been going verywell, with five boxing events tak-ing place over eight months.

According to matchmaker andCity Boxing trainer Dave Allison,no promotion in B.C. has donethis many boxing shows over such

a short period, since City Boxingwas hosting events a few yearsago at its gym.

“This was a Wednesday show, which was expected to be a chal-lenge, but in the end it was notthe mid-week time slot that hurtthe event,” Allison noted. “It wasthe fact that a fighter could notmake weight.”

COMBSPORT (the BritishColumbia Combative SportsAssociation), the sanctioning bodythat supervises and sanctions theevents, has specific rules and doesnot yield on rules that adhere tosafety. This according to Allison, who noted that the main event ina show is always the importantfight and when you lose it, thatwill inevitably hurt the event.

…continued from page A20The Keith Holdsworth versus Jonathon Dubois title

bout was cancelled when Dubois could not make weight. The semi-main event filled the gap well with Jesse

Brenner of Surrey Boxing going up against Sim Brar ofBisla Martial Arts in an all-Surrey match up.

Brenner, who is ranked No. 1 in the super welterweightdivision, lost the first round according to all three judges.Brar, the taller of the two, used his reach advantage welland kept Brenner at bay.

Brenner solved the puzzle and made the changes heneeded to make to take the second round on all threecards.

So it all came down to a very close final round.“The judges did agree on the round and the split deci-

sion went to Jesse Brenner who remains No. 1 ranked,”Allison reported.
