Surgery and therapy have helped rescuea dog named Indy from a life of pain.by Matthew [email protected]

Indy doesn’t have a middle setting. The pub-Boston terrier mix is tearing

around the Brookswood home of Oliver andHama Bender. Indy is playing with her newbest friend, fellow canine Kirby.

Finally, she’s pooped. Indy drools a bit, then plops down at the feet of Oliver andpromptly goes to sleep.

“It doesn’t slow her down,” Oliver said. He’s talking about her malformed hind

leg. Indy runs with a very slight limp, theresult of a genetic condition that left a backleg twisted and painful from the time shewas a puppy.

Now, at about two years old, the dogis pain-free thanks to two sets of ownersand the Langley Animal Protection Society(LAPS).

Indy’s story began with a breeder some-where near Prince George.

LAPS director Sean Baker believes she wasthe product of bad breeding, of a breederwho was just trying to create as many pupsas possible.

Indy’s degenerative bone condition waslikely a result of not keeping track of whichanimals were related.

“It showed classic signs of somebody whowas just breeding dogs for profit,” Bakersaid.

Indy’s back leg has a degenerative bonecondition. The femur, the bone between theknee and the hip, wasn’t formed properly.

Indy began to show signs of problems fair-ly early on. Her first owners, a family fromWalnut Grove, took Indy to the vet and paidfor badly needed orthopedic surgery.

The surgery was a success, but to ensureIndy regained the use of her leg, months ofexpensive rehab were also needed. Her ori-ginal family simply couldn’t afford it. Theyreluctantly arranged to place her with LAPS,which could get her the care she needed.

LAPS partnered with Canine H2O, anAbbotsford firm that offers swimmingtherapy for dogs. Several free swims werearranged, and Indy’s leg gained strength asshe paddled about in the pool. In between, leg exercises had to be performed regularly.

Indy is now thought to be pain-free, andshe has regained a significant amount of usein her bad leg, Baker said.

While she was still recovering, LAPSbegan looking for a new home in which toplace a dog that might still have costly vetbills in years to come.

They called the Benders, who had beenlooking for a canine friend for Kirby, theirprevious shelter dog.

They brought Kirby to meet Indy, and the

two hit it off right away.Kirby, although bigger, is a bit of a push-

over, so Indy, smaller but high energy, is agood partner, the Benders explained.

“She’s so fast, even with it [her leg] beingless developed,” Hama said.

They also noted that Indy is fearless, friendly with people and dogs, and tolerantof their cat.

The dogs will have plenty of company, asthey accompany Oliver to work every day.

The Benders know that arthritis may bea problem for Indy later in life, but they’reprepared for the vet bills and extra care shemay need.

“She seems to be settling in really well,”Oliver said.

A young Surrey man facescharges after evading Mountiesand smashing into an apartment.by Matthew [email protected]

A pickup truck sent a LangleyMountie scrambling when its driverblasted through a CounterAttack road

block early Saturday morning.Just after 2 a.m. the pickup turned

from Fraser Highway on 201A Street, where the road check was set up.

Rather than stop for the officers– who were wearing reflective vestsand holding flashlights topped withorange cones – the driver swervedover the centre line and drove dir-ectly at one Mountie.

The officer managed to jump outof the way unharmed, said Langley

RCMP Cpl. Holly Marks. An officer in a car, lights and sirens

on, followed the pickup to MichaudCrescent, where the truck slammedinto an apartment and lamp post.

Cyclists are like pad-dling ducks. The upperbody stays almostmotionless, while thelegs move furiously.

Similarly, there is a lotof furious work that goeson more-or-less belowthe surface before theCops for Cancer Tour deValley hits the road.

If you could peek into the mass emails that fly backand forth between the riders, you’d see more than20 people coordinating dozens of fundraising events.Everyone wants to get a few extra dollars to hand overto the Canadian Cancer Society, to benefit children withcancer. Every rider has pledged to raise a minimum of$5,000 before putting feet to pedals on Sept. 23.

That means asking for money from the public, andasking for it in creative ways.

If you were in downtown Langley City on the week-end, you may have had your picture taken with Const.Karen Cryer, who was helping out with a fundraiserorganized by my co-workers at the Langley Advance.

Like that effort, a lot of fundraisers put the riders frontand centre. And like that effort, they almost all requirea group effort. We’re a team not just on our bikes, butwhile getting those all-important donations.

This spring, Sheriffs Jason Charles and Eric Meadorganized a Spinathon in Surrey, getting a whole hostof riders to ride stationary bikes in the middle of theGuildford Mall for a weekend. Shoppers got to watch usgoing nowhere, fast, for three days.

Then there are the pole sits.Tour de Valley team captain Ken Usipiuk is a big fan

of pole sits. Which is good, as he’s done them five yearsrunning in North Delta. Usipiuk spends about 40 hourson a rocking metal platform in front of a Save-On-Foods

“It’s a small sacrifice,” he said after his July event.“This is the easy part. Riding our bikes for nine days isthe easy part.”

With two other riders, he raised more than $8,000 ina weekend.

We’re now in the final month before the ride actuallybegins, and like training to ride, the fundraising is mov-ing into high gear. Pub nights and pole sits, jail andbails, and of course pleas to friends and family will allbe involved in the next four weeks.

One thing I’ve found is that people are incredibly gen-erous when you ask. A small part of it is the fact thatwe’re going to undertake the ride. But the larger part isthe cause. Everyone understands the importance of theCanadian Cancer Society’s work. Almost everyone whodonates takes me aside and says “I lost my father/moth-er/sister/brother/child/friend to cancer. I wish I couldgive more.”

• The 2010 Cops for Cancer Tour de Valley takesplace Sept. 23 to Oct. 1, as riders – including myself– travel from Delta to Boston Bar and back.

While Arts Alive! patrons looked on, wood-turner Allan Cusworth from Turned Creationssculpted a wooden bowl.

…continued from page A1Usually, there are a few lulls throughout

the day, but James said “it was constant, constant people,” estimating a record-sized crowd of at least 15,000 cruisedthe one-way strip of Fraser Highway onSaturday.

The fact that the weather cooperated, was also greatly appreciated by James andcredited for drawing the high numbers.

With threats of rain heard during theweek leading up to the festival, shereceived a few last minute cancellations. But the rain held off, and participants andspectators alike came out in droves.

There was, without question, also thebiggest number of vendors (painters, artisans, crafters, potters, sculptures, pho-

tographers, and other artists) of any otherArts Alive!, said James, who estimatedthere were 150 booths.

“There’s no better feeling for an eventorganizer to see the street full of people. What made this year special was not onlythe fabulous attendance, but the overallfeeling of it being a street party, whereeveryone knows each other and is enjoy-ing just being there. You could sense itin the air and everywhere you looked, people were having a great time,” Jamessaid.

“I think the merchants were happy.I think the vendors were happy,” sheconcluded. “I know the sponsors aredelighted, so things are looking good forthe 18th annual.”

I need to reduce my staff costs; can I reduce their hours and benefitsinstead of layoffs?

Many employers are looking to change shift patterns, reduce overtime, cut backon pay or benefits, freeze wage levels, or minimize bonuses. The employmentcontract may permit some changes, however, the employer must still act

reasonably, for example giving employees prior notice of such changes. Even if a benefitis non-contractual or discretionary, the employee may still be entitled to it, if it has beenprovided consistently over time. A prudent measure is to explain the reasons for the changeand seek the employees’ agreement. If a unilateral change is made and the employee continues to work, the employee maybe deemed to impliedly agree to the change. This is more likely if the change is feltimmediately, such as a pay cut, rather than later, such as reduced severance or pensionbenefits. However, the employee can resign and claim for constructive dismissal if they donot agree to a fundamental change and reasonable notice of the change was not given. Itmay be safer to dismiss with working notice and then re-hire on revised terms.

Our View

Wild ride lasts40 long years

In a world of shifting enterprises andquick-change business assets, reaching a40-year milestone is a significant accom-plishment. It’s even more significant whenthe public’s perception of the type of busi-ness being conducted has changed dra-matically – and not necessarily in a psitiveway – over those four decades.

Of course, shifting public percep-tion over the treatment of animals – andparticularly “wild” animals in captivity– hasn’t been the only hurdle that theGreater Vancouver Zoo has had to over-come to reach its 40th anniversary as oneof Langley’s, and certainly Aldergrove’s,pre-eminent tourist attractions.

There have been controversies to fuelthe flames of public perception – eagerlyfanned by animal rights activists – particu-larly in the zoo’s more recent history.

There was the matter of a suitableenclosure for Hazina the Hippo, a projectthat seemed to go on interminably, untilcharges were laid – and then dropped atabout the time it became clear that theever-stretching timeline collapsed and thefine, new facilities came into being.

There was longtime favourite Tina theElephant’s deteriorating condition, finallyrelieved by her removal to a more suitablefacility in the United States – but too late,as she died not long after her arrival there.

There were positive points, too, like thezoo’s involvement in saving endangeredspecies like the Oregon spotted frog.

The zoo’s tourism dollars boost thelocal economy, and there is no denyingsome educational – alongside the enter-tainment – value for children (of all ages)to see live wild animals up close, even ifwild behaviour may not come with pack-age for many species kept in captivity.

For some activists it has been 40 yearstoo long… but as long as thousands con-tinue to flock to the zoo, and as long aswatchful eyes ensure that the animals aretreated well, it will remain a significantpart of the local business community.

I just came back from our place in thewoods where I bury my head in the sand for afew days every year.

It’s kind of the opposite of the way yourecharge the batteries for whatever digitalgizmo suits your fancy – instead of pluggingit in, I kind of pull the plug out while I’m atMachete Lake.

Indeed, I was quite distraughtto learn that our granddaughter’slatest digital toy, an iSome-thingorother, was actually ableto keep her connected with theInternet and the digital avatars thattake the place of up-close-and-per-sonal friendships these days.

That was, until the power sourcedied… and we have no facilities upthere to effect a recharge (at least, that’s my story, and I’m sticking to it).

Now I should interject here, in the midst myLuddite ranting, that there is a major upside tothe connectivity (as opposed to personal con-tact) that the Internet offers. Emma and herfamily hosted a young lady on an exchangevisit from Korea some time ago, and the twogirls have kept in touch, often daily, in waysthat would not have been possible – or evenimagined – when I was her age.

They can write back and forth over a spanof minutes, when such distances as separ-ate them would only a few years ago haverequired days or weeks. They quickly and eas-ily share pictures, drawings, and their favour-ite songs.

But please don’t tell her I approve. I preferto remain like all the other old fogeys whodeem all this texting and twittering nonsenseas impersonal and socially destructive.

In the meantime, I will continue to pretendthat, when we head off to our hole in the

woods every year, modern technology has notyet followed us there.

Indeed, my own cell phone – now severalgenerations old, as electronic devices aremeasured – remains a truly faithful compan-ion, in that it, too, severs its ties with theoutside world while we’re up there at our lakenear the top of the mountains, ensuring that Ican continue my excuse for dealing with sur-prises when I get back to work, instead of feel-ing a need to allow the rigours of work breakinto my vacation time.

According to surveys commissioned by vari-ous companies and governments over the pastfew years, too many Canadians already short-

change their time off that way.And the Computer Age, I recall

being told more than once in theglorious 1970s, was going to setus free.

Fat chance, eh?By being cut off from the rest

of the “free” world over the pastcouple of weeks, I missed:

• the successful completionof Bill Vander Zalm’s anti-HSTpetition;

• the legal contestation of the anti-HST peti-tion by business and other pro-HST interests;

• Elections BC’s decision to hold back theanti-HST petition until the legal challengeswere resolved;

• vocal expression of concern by the anti-HST petitioners that there was foul play afoot,and the legal challenges were merely a ploy toallow Gordo and his BC Libs to circumvent orat least defer the democratic process;

• the resolution of the anti-HST petitionchallenges;

• the subsequent release of the anti-HSTpetition to the Legislature by Elections BC; and

• several triumphant ultimatums coupledwith declarations of imminent recall petitionsby the anti-HSTers led by Vander Zalm.

So what did I really miss? I suppose there isstill plenty of BC Liberal whining ahead.

And I’d happily have missed that, too.Visit Bob Groeneveld’s blog, Editor’s Notes, at http://tiny.cc/v7b94

Dear Editor,In a final gasp, the

Agricultural LandCommission has conveneda public informationmeeting on the MuffordCrescent/64th Avenueoverpass proposal, at theLangley Events Centre at 7p.m. on Aug. 30.

The first public hear-ings on the issue wereheld 20 months ago, andagain with farmers andconcerned citizens a fewweeks ago, on July 22.

The proponent, withhis engineering resource(who gave us the 200thStreet/Highway One inter-section), advised thatthis four-lane travesty isrequired to transport cit-

izens of the Willoughbyarea to the hayfields ofeastern Langley. Theywere unable to defenddumping all of that trafficonto 216th Street, cur-rently a busy two-lanerural road.

They refused to considerthe “J Option,” proposedat the original meeting,as it did not meet therequired east/west connec-tivity test.

The only reason I cansee the need for east/westconnectivity is for theeventual development ofthe Salmon River Uplands, once GVRD water hits thatarea. This might prove thereal economic “prize” forthe developers, and this

is a subtle way to get fastaccess built.

The J Option allows forthe eventual and inevitableexpansion of the Kwantlenagricultural campus, acommunity rail station forKwantlen, and most critic-ally, handling the seam-less rerouting of traffic offof the Langley Bypass toeastbound Glover Road(Highway 10) and on toHighway 1, or westboundto 64th Avenue with pre-emptive lights when unittrains cross the b ypass –thus ensuring the desiredeast/west connectivity. Asthe number of unit trainswill double over the next20 years, this is a criticalfeature and benefit of the JOption solution.

It is imperative local cit-izens put their vacationson hold for three hours onAug. 30 and make theirviews known to the ALC.

Dear Editor,I have many concerns about MP Mark

Warawa’s letter [Census threats notappropriate, Aug. 17 Letters, LangleyAdvance]. The Long Form Census hasserved this country well.

Canada has lost a dedicated andrespected civil servant, Dr. Munir Sheikh, former head of Statistics Canada, whoresigned due to the Conservative govern-ment’s fumbling to fix something whichdoes not require fixing.

The list of groups opposed to theConservative government’s proposedchanges to the Long Form Census is longbecause a non-mandatory census is sta-tistically invalid, and useless.

Yet the Conservative government is pro-posing to spend $30 million more for auseless, voluntary census.

The privilege of living in a country likeCanada includes the responsibility of vot-ing in elections, and of completing boththe short and long census forms.

I would have to conclude that theConservative government does not needaccurate data to govern, since they haveshown that they govern on ideology.

Students’ rights escorted offDear Editor,

Recently a fellow Kwantlen classmate was escortedoff the premises of Surrey’s campus and told to stophanding out his flyers about the school’s new cafeteriaprovider, a multi-national corporation with a long list ofallegations questionable work practices.

It is one of the largest private prison operators in theworld, and has contracts with the U.S.A. military. Whenstudents are buying food from this provider, they areultimately supporting the profit of punishment and war.

At an educational institution where we are taughtto be critical thinkers and take direct action to bringchange, a student was punished and refused the right toexpress an opinion.

I hope I’m not the only one frightened by this, andscared of what rights the university will take away next.

Annual drive

For children whose livesrevolve around disaster, war, and poverty, schoolsupplies can be a sign thatsomeone far away cares.by Roxanne [email protected]

Olga Nickel’s goal is to send 1,000school kits from Langley to needychildren around the world thisfall.

And she’s well on her way to reach-ing that target thanks to help from a fewhundred Langley residents, and a gaggleof Girl Guides from White Rock, explainedNickel, manager of the Mennonite CentralCommittee’s Ten Thousand Villages store in

downtown Langley City. All the Sparks, Brownies, Girl Guides,

Pathfinders, Rangers, and Guide leaderswith the Peninsula District of Girl Guidesof Canada are helping compile hundredsof drawstring bags filled with school sup-plies for children in Third World countries, explained the group’s international advisorLeslie Payne.

Their contribution to this program beganlast year, with the Guides putting togetherabout 100 kits after Payne serendipitouslydiscovered the program while shopping inTen Thousand Villages.

There wasn’t enough time to put togethera district-wide undertaking last year, butPayne was able to reach out and get a com-mitment from all the girls and women beforethis year’s summer break. They’re expectedto compile 280 to 300 kits in mid-September.

Post-secondary education

A Langley campusis expanding itsscience facilities.

by Heather [email protected]

Trinity Western Uni-versity’s NeufeldScience Centre wasbuilt in 1964 and

updated in 1993.Since the march of

science never ceases, theChristian university decidedit was time to update thecentre again with a $3.3-mil-lion expansion.

Dignitaries broke groundMonday on the space thatwill provide 8,624 squarefeet of science and technol-ogy research labs and teach-ing space for the univer-sity’s nursing, chemistry,

and biology programs. The work involves a

two-storey addition to theexisting Neufeld centre.Construction is expected tobe done by mid 2011.

“We’ll be ready for oursummer programs,” said Dr.Ka Yin Leung, who headsup the natural and appliedsciences department.

The federal governmentis providing more than $2.6million from the KnowledgeInfrastructure Program forpost-secondary schools. That funding is for the sci-ence centre, Norma MarionAlloway Library, and anupgrade of TWU’s informa-tion and communicationstechnology infrastructure.

The science centreproject will increase TWU’sresearch capacity. Leungexplained that they will

be able to have researchanimals such as mice oncampus, not possible withexisting facilities.

He said like many re-search facilities, TWU triesto minimize use of animalsbut for some research, theyare necessary.

The construction will al-low up to 50 more studentsto do research and providesmodern facilities for stu-dents and staff “so we cando cutting edge, world-classresearch right here at TrinityWestern University,” Leungtold the Langley Advance.

During the formal cere-mony, Leung and the otherdignitaries shared that theyare working in the name ofGod.

“We trust that our activ-ities in this extension willglorify His name,” he said.

TWU breaks ground to do ground-breaking research

Heather Colpitts/Langley Advance

Dr. Ka Yin Leung, the dean of natural and applied sciences, and TWU president Dr. Jonathan Raymond arelooking forward to construction of the Neufeld Science Centre expansion. Heavy equipment is already inplace but paused long enough to allow for the ground-breaking ceremony Monday afternoon.

…continued from page A10“We do a lot of other things, but

this is how we’ve chosen to start offour year,” Payne said.

An initiative like the school kitprogram – which sees these bags sentto places where conflict and faminepersist, such as Iraq, Haiti, Honduras,Nepal, Jordan, and Ukraine – is aperfect fit with the Guides’ motto thatincludes helping those in need, andthinking and actingglobally.

In somecountrieschildren arenot allowed toattend classeswithout schoolsupplies, Payneexplained.

“This program willchanges their lives,” she added, notingthat a few bucks worth of school sup-plies could be life altering – it can bethe difference between them being ableto attend school or not, and being ableto learn to read or write, or not.

With this year’s school kit program

now well in hand, Payne said it’s hergoal to have other districts in B.C. jumpaboard for 2011.

And this new project for the Guideshas even taken an unexpected, but joy-ful twist this year, she explained.

Thanks to a generous donationreceived by HBC and topped up byseveral of the Girl Guides, the districtwas also able to provide other schoolsupplies to the White Rock food bank

– to help lessfortunate kidsat home.

Each year,MCC sendsout around120,000 kits,containingfour note-books, four

unsharpenedpencils, a ruler, a large eraser and apackage of 12 coloured pencils.

These supplies are packed in hand-sewn fabric bags and distributed byMCC partner agencies in schools andorphanages.

“Families and school groups have

found the hands-on aspect of shoppingfor the school supplies particularlymeaningful. Some children even spendtheir own allowance money. They can’timagine being so poor that they haveno paper,” Nickel said.

“All of us at Ten Thousand VillagesLangley are excited about the help wereceive from our customers and sup-porters, like the Girl Guides. And everyyear the participation of the Langleycommunity with the school kits growsa little bit more,” she added.

Ten Thousand Villages, which sellsartisan-crafted accessories, home decor, and gift items from around the globe, ventured into the kits 15 years ago.

This year’s program began Aug. 15,and will continue until Sept. 30.

“It is time again for back to schoolshopping – an ideal time to share theexcitement of learning with childrenin developing countries, who can onlydream of new school supplies,” Nickelsaid.

The bags and a list of requiredsupplies are available at the store, at20525 Fraser Hwy., or online at www.TenThousandVillages.ca.

Two teens will trade leatheras part of a busy night ofboxing at the Coast Hotel andConvention Centre.by Troy [email protected]

Mat Andreatta and BeauBrooks are soft-spoken, mild-mannered teenagers who planon punching each other repeat-edly in the face, head, and upperbodies Friday night.

Personality-wise, there’s littleseparating the two super-feather-weights highlighting Clash at theCascades 3 at the Coast Hotel &Convention Centre.

That’s because on first encoun-ter, both appear humble andpolite.

When they get in the ringfor their amateur boxing bout, all niceties will, and must, beescorted out the door.

Andreatta, 16, has the edge inexperience, but only just.

Fighting out of the host CityBoxing club, he owns a perfect3-0 record.

Brooks, 17, a product ofRevolution Gym, will make hisring debut.

The question for both boxers isobvious: what’s a nice guy likeyou doing in a rough sport likethis?

“I’ve always wanted to boxsince I was young,” Andreattaexplained. “But I never really gotaround to it. I got into hockeyand stuff. I just like cominghere [to City Boxing’s gym] andworking out. I just like beinghere.”

Andreatta reflects on the nighthe entered the ring for his firstofficial bout.

“It was intimidating but it wasprobably one of the best feel-ings I’ve ever had,” he said. “Itwas the scariest thing of my life.I was just shadow boxing, andthen they called me up. As I waswalking to the ring, everythingjust went away. I felt like I wassupposed to be there.”

Even though they live in thesame part of Langley, Andreattaand Brooks know little about

each other.“I’m facing a kid from my

school,” Andreatta said, ofBrooks. “I never really talked tohim. I just know of him.”

“I’ve seen him fight once, butI haven’t really seen him otherthan that,” Brooks remarked.“I’ll know when I get in there, Iguess.”

Andreatta said he’ll get a feelof what Brooks has to offer earlyon in the bout and then adjusthis style accordingly.

“For the first little bit of thefirst round I’ll see what he isdoing and then try to counter...”Andreatta said. “I’ll just use myjab a lot and try to set that up.”

If he gets hit with a goodpunch, Andreatta said he’ll justkeep going forward, “becausethat’s what fighters do. Youcan’t really stop.”

For his part, Brooks is excitedabout his first, likely leatherytaste of competitive boxing.

“The nerves will be there, butI’m looking forward to it,” hesaid.

Brooks hopes Friday’s boutwill be the first of many in hisamateur career.

“We’ll see how things go onFriday, I guess,” he said.

The future foes shook handsand said a cordial, and of course, polite, “hello” prior to a promo-tional photo recently.

The Andreatta/Brooks bout is

one of eight scheduled Friday. An intriguing match-up has

City Boxing pugilist ShawnMcDonald, from Walnut Grove, going up against Blue CornerBoxing’s Jake Weitzel, a veteran

who started boxing roughly 20years ago.

McDonald is training hard forthe five-round clash in the 147-pound welterweight division. Hisshirt drenched in sweat duringa recent trainingsession at the CityBoxing gym, the20-year-old saidhis confidencelevel is high.

“I’m probablyin the best shapeof my life rightnow,” he said, taking a breakfrom sparring andbag work.

McDonaldrespects Weitzeland all boxers, forthat matter.

“It takes b***sto get into the ring,” he said.“You know what? Once you goget beat up a little bit, you cango talk to the other guy after, because there’s mutual respect.”

Machismo mixed with a lib-

eral dose of sportsmanship, andthe fact boxing is the ultimateindividual sport, in his opinion, are what drives McDonald’s pas-sion for pugilism.

“It’s not like a team sport,”he said. “You areonly relying onyourself, which iscool, right? That’swhat I love aboutboxing.”

As for strategy, the tall, lankyMcDonald plansto use his reachto keep Weitzel atarm’s length.

“I like to throwa lot of punches,”said McDonaldwho is still look-ing for his firstknockout in four

years of boxing.“I’m real skinny, so my jab is

my main asset. I like to train togo to the distance, but whateverhappens [happens].”

I’m a small town B.C. guy – born and raised in Parksville on Vancouver Island. I began playing football whileattending high school at Ballenas Secondary and because of my size I was a natural fit on the offensive line. Infact, I did so well that I was named my team’s Most Valuable Player in my senior season.

Following my high school graduation, I had an opportunity to head south to continue my education and playfootball for the University of South Carolina in the NCAA’s Southeastern Conference, which features some of themost competitive college football in the United States.

After playing four years on the Gamecocks’ offensive line, I had a newfound appreciation for my adoptedhome but was nonetheless excited to return to British Columbia to don the black and orange as the Lions’first-round selection in the 2008 CFL draft.

I’d seen firsthand what playing in front of some of the most passionate football fans is all aboutand I knew I’d see similar support from Lions fans back home in B.C.

Now in my second season on the Leos’ offensive line, I feel privileged to come to work everyday and play the game I love. Nothing would make me happier than to bring the Grey Cuphome to British Columbia and share that experience with my family and friends. Through thick

and thin, the guys on the offensive line have becomefamily to me and I’m proud of the contributions we make on

and off the field. As a kid who dreamed of playing professional football from a young

age, I remember looking up to athletes for inspiration. For that reason, Ienjoy taking part in the Lions’ community programs throughout the year, particularly the Terasen Gas Energy Champions initiative.

It gives me a feeling of pride to give back to the local communityand know that in some small way I could be having a positive influ-ence on the younger generation.

…continued from page A19There is a lot at stake,

says City Boxing trainerDave Allison, who is pro-moting the show.

“They are fighting fora B.C. [welterweight]championship,” Allisonreported.

Allison is amped upabout the bout, the event, and boxing’s resurgence inLangley.

“I have not enjoyed box-ing this much since the1990s,” he said.

Part of the reason foramateur boxing’s recentsurge in popularity locally, according to Allison, isits link to COMBSPORT(The British ColumbiaCombative SportsAssociation), which issanctioning the card.

“We are growing so fastit is unbelievable. We have

attracted a lot of people,”he said.

Allison said COMBSPORThas many advantages, including an improvedscoring system.

“We use the 20-pointmust system that hadbeen used in amateur box-ing until the late 1990s,”he said. “The computerscoring system is what iskilling boxing, not MMA[Mixed Martial Arts] asmost boxing people like tobelieve.”

Former CanadianOlympian Dale Walters– who captured bronze inthe bantamweight divisionat the 1984 Games in LosAngeles – will work as oneof the referees.

Darren Cooper andGurpreet Buttar, bothLangley residents, will bematched up on the card.

Amateur boxing at theCoast Hotel will be aregular occurrence accord-ing to Allison, who notedthat City Boxing has twomore events scheduled atthe Langley City venuebetween now and mid-November.

The next shows are Oct.9 and Nov. 10.
