AIMS OF THE CHORAL WEEK

to study and perform choral works by Jean Langlais, his contemporaries, those who

influenced him and those he has influenced, together with great music of the Anglican

tradition

to bring experienced singers together in the Breton village where Langlais was born

to work intensively with living composers who are professionals of the highest calibre

to perform in three events during the Langlais International Festival 2014

For the past six years we have run a successful and unique choral week under the

expert leadership of Malcolm Archer, and we shall be repeating it in 2014. We are now

seeking to recruit experienced singers who can expect to make good music in convivial

surroundings and, in the process, become le Chœur de l’Académie du Festival Jean

Langlais.

MUSIC FOR THE 2014 CHORAL WEEK

We will be focusing on the following works (subject to amendment):

Jean Langlais Lauda Jerusalem

A la Claire Fontaine

Maurice Duruflé Requiem

Hubert Parry Blest pair of sirens

Herbert Howells I love all beauteous things

G.F. Handel Worthy is the Lamb and Amen Chorus

Malcolm Archer Ave Maria

David Bednall Sherborne Mass

A basic level of sight-singing ability will be essential, and singers

should try to learn the music before the course begins. Copies of scores

will be sent a month in advance.

CHORAL WEEK FEES

The cost of the Choral Week is £250 per person.

This will include your individual singing lesson with Hilary Jones, all the music scores,

refreshments during the coffee and tea breaks and an evening meal on the first day.

The fee also covers:

• fees and expenses for Malcolm, David and Hilary

• payment to the SACEM (French performing rights)

• hire of venues

• general administrative costs

Please be aware that you must make your own arrangements for travel

and accommodation.

Information about travel (e.g. flights, ferries and routes) and accommodation (e.g.

hotels, B&B, gîtes, youth hostels and campsites) can be found below. Please contact us

if you wish to arrange a car share.

STRUCTURE OF THE WEEK

There will normally be two rehearsal periods each day at 3 Rue du Moulin, la Fontenelle.

We have been invited to sing Sunday morning mass at the church of la Fontenelle, and

we shall perform in two concerts : at the Basilique de Pontmain and at la Fontenelle.

Vocal coach Hilary Jones will be giving whole choir warm-up sessions each day and she

will “voice” the choir. Each participant is also entitled to a 20 minute individual lesson

with Hilary (included in the Choral Week fee) and singers may book additional half-hour

(£20/20€) or hour-long (£40/40€) sessions with her during the week.

There will also be a series of lectures which take place each day just before lunch. Last

year’s topics ranged from “How to develop and maintain good vocal technique” to

“Langlais’ musical education”, “Wagner, the Sorcerer of Bayreuth” and “Scurrilous tales

from the organ loft”.

WHERE TO EAT DURING THE CHORAL WEEK

There is a good restaurant in the village. A free evening meal will be provided at 3 Rue

du Moulin on the first evening and we can arrange to book lunch and evening meals on

the other days at a cost per meal of between €9.00 and €13.00 per head, to include

wine/cider and coffee.

THE CHORAL WEEK LEADERS

This will be Malcolm’s eighth visit to la Fontenelle.

MALCOLM ARCHER

Malcolm Archer is Director of Chapel Music at Winchester College, where

he trains and conducts the Quiristers and Chapel Choir and teaches organ

in the College. He has enjoyed a distinguished career in cathedral music,

which has taken him to posts at Norwich, Bristol and Wells Cathedrals and

then Director of Music at St. Paul’s Cathedral in London. During his time

there he directed the choir for several State services, including the

Tsunami Memorial Service, the London Bombings Service and the 80th

Birthday Service for HM The Queen, for which he was invited by

Buckingham Palace to compose a special anthem. His many broadcasts

and recordings from Wells and St. Paul’s have received critical acclaim,

and his CD of Christmas music from St. Paul’s was voted Editor’s number

one choice in The Daily Telegraph.

Malcolm is much in demand as a choir trainer and choral and orchestral

conductor, and he has directed concerts, workshops and courses in various

parts of the globe, as well as working with several leading orchestras. As

an organ recitalist he has played in nine European countries, the USA and

Canada, and his CDs include repertoire as diverse as J.S. Bach and Olivier

Messiaen, as well as his own music.

Malcolm Archer’s official web site is: www.malcolmarcher.com

This will be David’s

tenth visit to

la Fontenelle.

DAVID BEDNALL

David is a busy composer and organist, combining a freelance career with

the position of Sub Organist at Bristol Cathedral and PhD Studies at the

University of Bristol. He studied with Dr. Naji Hakim and David Briggs and

between 2002 and 2007 was at Wells Cathedral, as Sub Organist and then

Assistant Organist.

David studied in Sherborne and then at the Queen’s College, Oxford where

he was Organ Scholar. He was a prize-winner in Improvisation and

Performance at the examination for Fellow of The Royal College of

Organists in 2002. He has performed all the major works of Olivier

Messiaen as part of the Liturgical Year. His debut solo CD (for Lammas) of

Hakim, Messiaen and Vierne at Blackburn Cathedral, and a CD of liturgical

improvisations with Malcolm Archer, have both received excellent critical

reviews.

This will be Hilary’s

sixth visit to

la Fontenelle.

HILARY LLYSTYN JONES

Born in Llandudno, North Wales, Hilary studied singing, piano and harp at

Chethams School of Music, Manchester, and continued her studies at the

Guildhall School of Music and Drama in London with Noelle Barker.

Hilary has taught the choral scholars and students of the Universities of

Oxford and Cambridge and young singers in the Junior Department of the

Guildhall School of Music. She has devoted herself to the training of boy

and girl choristers, teaching at cathedrals throughout England. She is the

only female who does this specialised training with so many different

choirs in England.

Hilary has worked with David Hill for over 17 years both at Westminster

and Winchester Cathedrals as well as assisting with the voicing of the

London Bach Choir of which he is director. She was vocal coach to the

City of Birmingham Symphony Youth Chorus from 1995 – 2000 and since

1992, several choristers trained by Hilary have won or been finalists in the

BBC Radio 2, Chorister of the Year. The 2003 and 2004 winners were all

taught by Hilary.

BRENDA DEAN

Brenda Dean is a retired teacher who has sung in choirs all her life. A

trained singer, she has set up choirs and directed choral and stage

productions in the UK and the Middle East. She was a consultant with the

Learning and Skills Network in London, organising Citizenship training

events throughout England, and she is chairman of the Wingrave Singers

in Buckinghamshire. (www.bucksinfo.net/wingravesingers)

Brenda is President of the Association “Les Amis de Jean Langlais” in la

Fontenelle (www.jeanlanglais.eu) and, with the help of her French

committee, she has organised over 65 concerts in Brittany during the nine

Langlais International Festivals of 2005 – 2013, including six very

successful choral weeks.

TRAVEL

There are a number of different options for travelling to la Fontenelle. If you do come

by public transport, please note that there is NO public transport to la Fontenelle itself -

the only options are to hire a car or to book a taxi.

Please bear in mind that you will need transport whilst attending the choral

week to travel from your accommodation to the various rehearsal and concert

venues.

Fares are normally announced up to three months in advance, so to take advantage of

best prices for tickets (and to have a chance of a sharing arrangement for car hire), it is

suggested that anyone interested should identify their interest before 30th April, 2014

and plan to make a firm commitment within the following month as travel details

become available.

By CAR

There a number of ferry options as well as the Eurotunnel. The table below lists the

possible routes and distances to la Fontenelle.

To Distance Time From Company

St Malo 53km 50m Portsmouth or Poole - 9 hrs Brittany Ferries (PMTH) Condor Ferries (PLE) www.condorferries.com

Caen 156km 1h45m Portsmouth - 5¾hrs Brittany Ferries

Cherbourg 190km 2h18m Portsmouth - 3hrs Brittany Ferries www.brittany-ferries.co.uk

Eurotunnel 495km 4h30m Folkestone – ½ hr www.eurotunnel.com

but they range between £44 and £144. The charge is per car with no limit on the

number of passengers (£30 for a dog!). Petrol costs about the same as in UK and

diesel is cheaper, so costs from Calais would be around £40. Total motorway tolls for

the journey would be about £24.

By RAIL

The EUROSTAR service from London provides an excellent link to France. TGV high

speed services and the changeover can be in Paris (requiring change of station) or more

simply in Lille (but at fewer times during the day). In both cases TGV services go to

Rennes and on to Dol and St Malo. Although the latter two are closer to la Fontenelle, it

Page 10: Langlais Choral Course 2014

takes longer to get there and arrangements still have to be made for the onward

journey. Again, the options are to hire a car or to book a taxi.
