Landrushopensat15:00GMTon3February2009andclosesat23:59GMTon23March2009.Thelandrushperiodoftel-domainsisopentoeveryone.Anytel-domainthatisnotregisteredduringSunrisewillbeeligibleforLandrushregistrationatapremiumprice.Landrushregistrationswillcarryathree-yearminimumterm.Theselectionmethodisfirst-come,first-served.Thereisnovalidationinvolved.RegistrationsduringLandrusharesubjecttothestandardregistrationconditionscontainedintheAcceptableUsePolicy(AUP).

Thetel-domainsusetheDomainNameSystem(DNS)inawaythatempowerstel-domainowners,whetherbusinessesorindividuals,tocontrolhowandwherepeoplecancommunicatewiththem.

TraditionalTopLevelDomains(TLDs)usetheDNStoreturnAddressrecordsorIPaddressesthatareusedtoreachwebsitesorsendemail.Inthecaseofawebsite,whenuserslookupIBM.com,theirdevicequeriestheDNSforIBM'sIPaddress(theAddressrecord).TheDNSreturnstheIPaddressassociatedwithIBM.com(129.42.18.103)andthedeviceusestheIPaddresstolocateandviewtheIBMwebsite.

AllexistingTopLevelDomainsusetheDNSinthistraditionalway.However,thetel-domaindoesnotcommunicatewithwebcontentoremail--itenablescommunicationwithpeople.ItthereforerequiresanapproachtostoringcontactinformationdirectlyintheDNSforwhichAddressrecordsareinappropriate,sinceanAddressrecordcannotidentifyaphonenumberoraVoIPserviceaddress,suchas

aSkypeorYahoo!Messenger.

Thetel-domainwillallowcontactinformationtobestoreddirectlyintheDNSsothatwhenadeviceperformsaqueryfora.teldomain(i.e.,AdamSmith.tel),theDNSwillnotrespondwithanAddressrecord,ratheritwillreturnthecontactinformationdirectlytothedevice,whichenablestheclick-to-communicatefunctionality.Thefollowingdemonstrateshowamobiledevicecaninitiatecommunicationusingatel-domainname.

Step1. Asshowninthediagramtotheright,theuserlooksupAdamSmith.telonhisInternetenabledmobiletelephone.

Step2. Thedeviceusesitslocalnetwork(GPRS,3G,WiFi,Ethernet,etc.)toquerytheDNSforAdamSmith.tel.

Step3. TheDNSrespondswiththecontactinformationAdamSmithchoosestostorewithinhistel-domain.Thiscouldincludeamobilephonenumber,anemailaddress,hisofficephonenumberandmuchmore.

Step4. TheuserelectstocallAdamSmithonhismobilephonefromtheproposed

listandclicks-to-communicate.

Step5. AdamSmithiscontactedbytheuseronthemobilephonenumberofhischoice.
