“Through the Door” An Article on Ethics

As you walk through the door to your office or jobsite, you have a decision to make. This decision involves your behavior and attitude in the workplace. It answers the question, what will I do and how will I treat others? What is your answer? How did you derive at your decision? In other words, before you walked through the door of your office you have developed a basic code of conduct, and this is the foundation for your behavior. It is the total sum of your priorities, principles, thoughts about yourself and others, and experiences from the past. The decision you make as you walk through your door will determine how you will conduct yourself.

Most of the ethics that are taught for the workplace environment are not much different than the Golden Rule. Were you taught the Golden Rule? Do you think about it and let it affect your decisions? Most large companies have developed ethics programs, realizing the importance of behavior and attitudes, from the top down, which affects company morale and the eventual success within the market place.

Do unto others…… Do you think about the fact that others are influenced by you? Someone is always watching, observing, whether you are aware of it or not. They may hear about you from someone else, thus increasing your sphere of influence. The office workplace is not just about you, but your team.

As you would they do to you…… Are you able to affect your world and what happens to you? The answer is very simple, but not always simply done. A person with a strong character makes the decision to behave in such a way, in each situation, that they would want the consequences of that decision to be done to them. Treat others as you want to be treated. We are taught to share, to be fair, to be kind, and to be honest; all good qualities. They worked for us as children, and continue to serve at the workplace.

As you walk through the door of your office, ask yourself, if you would like to work with you? Would you want to hire you? Would you give yourself a leadership role? Would you want YOU to be on your team? Make the decision to be the kind of person you trust, knowing that your ethical behavior has a great influence on others and your company’s success.
