Tower Bridge
Tower Bridge has stood
over the River Thames in
London since 1894 and is
one of the finest, most
recognisable bridges inthe World. It is the
London bridge you tend
to see in movies and on
advertising literature forLondon. Tower Bridge is
the only Thames bridge
which can be raised.

Its middle section can be
raised to permit large
vessels to pass the
Tower Bridge. Massive
engines raise the bridgesections, which weigh
about 1000 tons each, in
just over a minute. It used
to be raised about 50times a day, but
nowadays it is only raised
4 to 5 times a week.

The Monument
The Monument is a 61 metre(202 feet) tall stone Romandoric column in the heart of theCity of London. It wasdesigned by Sir Christopher
Wren, and erected between1671 and 1677, as the City'smemorial to the Great Fire in1666. The monument is thetallest single stone column inthe world and contains a spiral
staircase leading to a viewingplatform from which you cansee some remarkable views ofthe city.

The fire began in a baker'shouse in Pudding Lane onSunday 2nd September 1666and finally extinguished onWednesday 5th September,
after destroying the greaterpart of the City. Thesignificance of its 61 metre(202 feet) height is thedistance to the bakery onPudding Lane that was the
suspected source of the firethat destroyed the city.

The top of the monument
is reached by climbing up
the narrow winding
staircase of 311 steps. A
cage was added in themid-19th century at the
top of the Monument to
prevent people jumping
off, after six people hadcommitted suicide
between 1788 and 1842.

Cleopatra's Needle
Cleopatra's Needle is locatedon the Thames Embankmentin London close to theEmbankment undergroundstation. The Obelisk was
actually constructed forTuthmose III and is carved withHieroglyphics praisingTuthmose and commemoratinghis third sed festival. Laterinscriptions were added by
Ramesses II to commemoratehis victories.

The London Eye
The British Airways London
Eye (Millennium Wheel) stands
135 metres (443 feet) high on
the South Bank of the River
Thames between Westminster
and Hungerford Bridges. It is
the world's highest observation
wheel.

The wheel wasconstructed in sectionswhich were floated up theriver Thames on bargesand assembled lying flat
on pontoons. Once thewheel was complete itwas raised into its uprightposition by cranes,initially being lifted at a
rate of about 2 degreesper hour until it reached65 degrees. The totalweight of steel in the Eyeis 1,700 tonnes.
