In Merthyr Tydfil Llamau will be able to renovate a derelict listed building which will incorporate a youth training centre, cyber cafe and supported accommodation. The town suffers from entrenched unemployment but at the centre young people will be able to study for accredited awards and gain work experience running the cyber cafe which will be open to the community. In Sunderland, a brand new flagship Centrepoint hostel for 100 homeless young people will benefit from an IT and learning suite, resource centre and dedicated learning worker. Young people living at the hostel would otherwise be sleeping rough or in B&B accommodation. The FFL facilities mean that the hostel is not just a roof over their heads but a springboard that will develop the skills and confidence they need for independent living. LandAid–25 Years Strong This year LandAid is celebrating its 25th Anniversary. We’ve come a long way since a group of surveyors inspired by LiveAid raised £40,000 to send a famine relief truck to the Sudan. LandAid now focuses on helping young and disadvantaged people in the UK and this year alone we’ll be committing at least £1million to projects that help young people achieve their potential. Our Grants Programme has been inundated with well over 400 applications this year. After careful consideration we have selected twelve new projects that will really make a difference by providing facilities, education, training and advice for hundreds of young people right across the UK. Many of these projects are not eligible for statutory funding so the grants we are able to give, thanks to your support, are essential at a time when 1 in 5 young people are not in education, training or employment. You can help LandAid invest in more projects by continuing to support our work. Why not attend one of our upcoming events such as Party Near The Park or participate in the 5KM Fun Run or support LandAid Day on 13 October. Or, you can simply make a donation by going to our website at www.landaid.org/give. Together we can do more. A £100,000 grant from LandAid, with funds raised partly by the Property Race Day, will enable them to move into their own flagship building in North London and enhance their work with more young people making sure that speech difficulties do not stop young people from reaching their potential. “As a child I never knew why I was different or why I couldn’t simply put my hand up in class and say what I wanted like my friend.
