Prime of Lifers ask:“How long will it take me to find a job?”
“How can I put myself out in front of the competition?”
“How do I get called back for interviews?”
I’ll answer these questions here. I started andbuilt a successful Los Angeles based recruitingfirm. For over twenty years we heard andanswered these questions for close to one millionjob applicants. I’m the founder of PDQ Careersand helped grow CT Engineering which we pur-chased and sold in 2006. During my years as aplacement firm leader we placed over 250,000people and learned what it takes to get hired.
You will be able to tap into time testedrecipes for success. We developed these tips andstrategies while working with a prestigious clientlist of companies like Wells Fargo Bank,AutoDesk, the Microsoft Corporation, the AutoClubs, the American Red Cross, AT&T, USC,Universal and Paramount Studios, children’s hos-pitals and governments.

Getting GoodJob Offers
Getting good job offers is like accomplishing mostother goals, except it’s harder. Because it’s so personal,it’s harder to be objective about it. Being objective aswell as professional in your job search is importanttoday. I wrote this book because I want to help youunlock your personal power. Yes, your power is inthere…waiting for you to dust it off, flex its musclesand then rebuild it. Are you ready?
Remember your first job hunt? It was exciting was-n’t it? It could also be confusing though eventually itwas successful, wasn’t it?
Maybe you were like me when you were a teenag-er…just hoping someone, anyone would hire you. Ijust couldn’t wait to get out there and talk to people,to find the lucky person who would become myemployer.
When I started in the job hunting game for thefirst time as a 16 year old, it seemed so unfair that allthe employers wanted experience. My parents werethe only ones willing to give me a job. Pffft! I wanteda real job, not what I then considered a “hand-out”from my parents.
Luckily, someone eventually did hire me. Mrs.DeWeese and Mrs. Opotowski were willing to give me
Patty - New World-6-149 6/19/11 10:52 PM Page 10
the chance I needed. I learned a lot from these won-derful women, even if I was “just” their babysitter.First jobs, no matter what they were, are always mem-orable and can make a lifetime impact. These twowomen were model moms and homemakers. I got tohelp them and they helped me too.
Fast-forward 30+ years. Plenty has changed, butthe enduring principles of success have not.
My goal in writing this is to help you regain thatwondrous, hopeful and optimistic mindset. Rememberbeing there? Remember when you were willing to doalmost anything for that first chance?
Let’s start now to help you get that wonder andexcitement back. With focus and effort you can putlife back into your job search. You’ll soon employ newbrain and attitude “muscles” and learn new skills. You’ll need them.
Is this simple? Not exactly, but remember, you didget your first job. If a new graduate or a teenager cando this, so can you!
Will it be stressful? Probably! Learning anythingnew will create some anxiety, but you can soon replacefear and anxiety with new knowledge and confidence. You can practice your success recipes on your personalnetwork first. Then when you’ve refined it, you cantake it on the road. If you put your game face on andbelieve that this is a magical journey for self-empower-ment, it will be!

Warm REFERRALS
are thebest!
Ask your friends and local business people for referrals. One of our favorite sources for “cold” job leads today isCraigslist. You will find thousands of jobs on-line.
We are also seeing notices posted in stores, windowsand on company websites. Job openings are everywhere.Learn to mine them to find your gold and don’t forget toshare some of the leads with your peer job circle. Younever know who is just waiting for that referral from you!
Update your LinkedIn profile and ask for recommenda-tions. Check to make sure your Facebook and other socialmedia sites are consistent with a professional image ofsomeone hirable.
Investigate Monster.com, Craigslist, or any other jobposting website specific to your city.

Q:
How long will this
JOB HUNTTAKE?
Patty - New World-6-149 6/19/11 10:52 PM Page 20
How flexible are you? There isn’t one answer for the prime-of-life job hunter. Some people get call backs and job offers theirfirst day out. Others may take weeks or even months to cus-tomize their approach. One thing for sure, you will get signs ofyour job suitability immediately.
Emails not pinging? This will take some time. There used tobe a rule of thumb. That rule was that a professional would mostlikely be out of work at least one month for every ten thousanddollars they earned. So, a person earning $70,000 annually mightexpect to take seven months to complete a successful job searchand get back to work. That rule was common before the internetbrought the world to our desktops.
Today’s employers have global options and 24-hour availabilityof support. The far-reaching recessions of the past few yearsturned the “old” ways of job hunting upside down! That’s why Iwant to remind you that the economy and jobs scene is reinvent-ing itself right now. There really is a whole new world of work.
Your speed of offers depends on many variables includingyour geography, pay, skills and your competition. Your attitude,self-motivation and actions will speed your job hunt. Want to cutthe time in half or get job offers next week? Then read andapply these success recipes today.

This can be used whenever you meet new people.Think of what you might say in the time it takes to rideup to the 10th floor. Practice it in front of the mirrorand for friends until it sounds great.
One might go like this: “Hi my name is John; I am aformer marine with management and technology skills.I am looking for a new job in a law office where I canapply my administrative skills and passion for justice.I’ve returned to school and hope to get my Law degreein another year.”

Patty - New World-6-149 6/19/11 10:52 PM Page 28
Take a personal inventory of your skills, educationand qualities. Think about your past experiencesand your accomplishments. Translate them intotoday’s assets.
Launch your courage, and without beingtoo boastful, make a list of ways you can con-tribute. Know that employers are likely to beinterested in confident, hopeful employees whohave a proven track record of contributions.Enterprises need good employees and collaboratorswho will help them serve their clients. We all needto stay ahead of the global competition and makemoney. Your part will be to demonstrate how youcan do that for your next employer!

Q:
What areTODAY’S EMPLOYERS
really LOOKING FOR?
Patty - New World-6-149 6/19/11 10:52 PM Page 30
There are, of course, some fundamentals that almost all employers agree on:
• Ready, willing and able to work• Clean, well-groomed appearance• Good work ethic• Optimistic and can do attitude• Low maintenance personality• Contemporary skills and mindset• Work and play well with others• Good cultural fit• Bottom line: people who add value to the company.
A:

Q:
How can I STAND OUT
from the thousands of other
JOB HUNTERS?
Patty - New World-6-149 6/19/11 10:52 PM Page 32
You likely have a set of characteristics and skills that can make youstand out. It is helpful to recognize the strengths and weaknesses ofindividuals in your chosen profession/industry. If you can identify thosethings, then it becomes much easier to recognize how you diff e r.
Interviewing is a good way to make you stand out from the rest of theapplicants. Keep a positive attitude, be energetic and lively, do not speak in amonotone voice, and demonstrate that you are a motivated go-getter. Av o i dsob stories, it is a tough job market and economy for everyone. Employersreally don’t want to hear about the hardships you have been facing in youremployment search or personal life. This is a professional interview, do notget too personal.
Persistence has been shown to have a positive effect in in almostany endeavor. Most applicants will simply give up when they receivea rejection, however the truly determined will not stop there.Perhaps an employer hired someone who is not working out. Youroptimistic, enthusiastic follow up and sincere thanks and expressionof continued interested could pay dividends.
“Try to stand out from all others; find what your unique strength is and then use it
to be innovative. Employers like innovative employees who think about what extra
they can do, not just what they have been told to do.”
Jim Delshad
CEO, American International Business Technology, Inc.
Mayor of Beverly Hills (2011)

Patty - New World-6-149 6/19/11 10:52 PM Page 34
Your computer and Internet skills are as important today as hav-ing a telephone was when we were growing up. Don’t think youcan skip this basic skill, you can’t.
Make technology and the Internet your friend. Proclaiming youare a Luddite will not help you! Skills we consider essential* todayinclude being able to find your way around internet search engines, and the software for your industry or profession (see appendix for alist of computer essentials). Almost every job uses technology in someway. Even gardeners, housekeepers and old economy workers needcomputers. Not long ago, I was at a new hotel, which hired overeleven hundred employees, every one of them applied online.Millions of jobs are out there and it is likely you will find your nextjob online.
Take classes if you don’t know how to use a computer. Find goodclasses at your local community college, online and through yourstate Employment Development Department’s One-Stop office,www.careeronestop.org. There are other alternatives available, suchas Lynda.com – one of the fastest growing educational companies inthe United States.

Beware of pity parties.A strong network can help you fill your prosperity
pipeline. Interviewers place a lot of weight on refer-rals from people they trust. Most people have heardof the hidden job market. Hiring data shows thatreferrals, not classified ads, are responsible for over80% of new job starts.
Your network is often directly connected to yournet worth. Even if you don’t aspire to become rich, learn to build a quality network. Enrich it and yournetwork will better nurture you!
Invest in yourself by making plenty of pay-it-for-ward deposits. Think alumni connections, yourchurch, professional associations and conferences.Tend your “in-person’ and online networks and theycan return dividends a plenty.

Keep your resume updated, online and printed onnice paper. Your resume is often your “admission tick-et.” Like a driver’s license or passport, you’ll need toproduce one when asked for it. Always customize yourcover letter to the company you are applying to, neveruse a boilerplate form letter. The effort (or lack of)shows and does make a difference.
If you have job gaps, use a different type of resumethan a career with continuous employment. Considerhiring a professional resume writer to help create dif-ferent versions. Q:
What are Keywords?
Patty - New World-6-149 6/19/11 10:52 PM Page 44
Keywords are terms frequently used in your pro-fession to describe special qualities employers seek.Examples are software programs, social media, med-ical and industry specific terms as well as special qual-ifications and certifications. Use keywords in yourskill based resume or chronological resume.
Recruiters rely on technology to sort throughthousands of leads and are looking for specific skills, people and employers. Understanding and highlight-ing your special skills increases your earning power.
Remember to list those valuable skills on anyapplications you may fill out. Even if you learnedsome technical or specialized skills while volunteer-ing, listing them is a good idea to leverage this train-ing. Proof read your resume and have a trustedfriend or professional review it before sending it out.

in this job MARKET?
Patty - New World-6-149 6/19/11 10:52 PM Page 46
Today’s workplace leverages teams of people organ-ized around projects, much like the movie-makingprocess. People have their specialties and must be ableto work independently and collaborate in teams.
Planting the seeds of opportunity starts with being afriend to others and cultivating strong alliances. Buildand use your own success team to help in your job hunt-ing. Four eyes can see more than two, 20 eyes and earskeeping their radar tuned for job leads will end up find-ing lots of opportunities.
Look for job hunting friends and mastermind groups(though be careful not to join or become a ‘sorry club’) –teams pay dividends.

Q:
Should I focus on JOB INTERVIEWS
orconsulting opportunities?
Patty - New World-6-149 6/19/11 10:52 PM Page 48
It is also common for some companies to use apay-rolling service for new staffers during a trial peri-od. In the new world of work your income opportu-nities could come in many forms; employee, consult-ant or freelancer.
If you do become a consultant, be sure to talk toyour tax advisor. They can tell you how much to putaside for social security, personal taxes and whatexpenses (car, work supplies, uniforms) might bedeductible from your income tax returns.

Constantly find places to interview. As you get bet-ter you will increase your options and confidence. Youwill also get some good feedback. Employers try toavoid desperate people. Try to show that you are inter-ested and that you are considering other opportunitiestoo. Send a sincere thank you note.
Keep a job log of places you have applied to andfollow up with the best opportunities. Stay upbeat. You always want to be optimistic and eager, but younever want to appear desperate. Practice confidencebuilding techniques to perfect yourself and your “eleva-tor pitch.”

Patty - New World-6-149 6/19/11 10:52 PM Page 52
You’ve got homework to do now. Talk to as manypeople as you can in your chosen job or field. Don’t beafraid to ask to do an informational interview. Aninformational interview is one which gathers generalinformation, makes friends, and increases your net-work. Do this in addition to applying for specific jobopenings. Learn as much as you can about what is val-ued in this particular industry. How does this companyperceive value? Ask and answer these and you arehalfway there.
Find informational videos online atwww.lynda.com. There are many free audio and videorecordings produced by successful professionals talkingabout their work and their passions. Take advantageof this rich source for preparation and to determine ifswitching careers is right for you.

Some say it is easier to land your next job when you are cur-rently employed. You should accept the offer when it fits wellwith your long or short term goals.
Ask lots of questions. If you have done your homework, your research about the company and the job, you are morelikely to recognize good opportunities when you see them. Wedo caution about simply accepting “the first job offered” if thefit isn’t right. This will work against you in the long run.Changing jobs too often, without a great reason or a fabulousnew opportunity, will damage your professional reputation.
“Be persistent, follow your heart. You spend a great deal of time at work, so
be sure to choose an industry you enjoy and a company you respect. If you
don’t succeed in the capturing the attention of a company you like, don’t give
up. Try creative approaches to get their attention. Persistence usually pays
off.”

Sources of data on your preferred job can befound on US Department of Labor, at trade associations, and atyour Chamber of Commerce, on experts’ blogs and news online.
Employers often post skill requirements on their website. Ifyou are in school, your career center office or library will havereference materials for you.
The Department of Labor website has information such asaverage wages, number of hires in each occupation by region, state and across the country. Visit www.dol.gov.Being busy isn’t enough. Focus and a commitment to continuallyrenewing your skills are essential for staying employed.

Q:
What is the best RESUME TYPEfor me since
I have so muchEXPERIENCE TO SHOW?
Patty - New World-6-149 6/19/11 10:52 PM Page 58
If you have fewer than 20 years’ experience, then usea chronological resume, listing the most recent or mostrelevant employment first. You may wish to make a videoresume for yourself. Some people, particularly those increative fields, are making themselves stand out this way.You can see examples at www.videoresumes.uc.com orwww.visualcv.com.
Remember LinkedIn and Facebook are living, virtualresumes that need regular maintenance. Don’t neglectthen and get left in last century’s economy. Manyemployers and recruiters rely heavily on these tools.Executive recruiters frequently search LinkedIn groups andkeywords so make sure your profiles are up to date. Welive in a keyword world, so it pays to be a bit of a name-dropper in your profile and resume.

Q:
Whatdo I do aboutWORK GAPS
in my RESUME?
Patty - New World-6-149 6/19/11 10:52 PM Page 60
Include a short narrative of your accomplishments. Itis common for students, stay-at-home mothers or care-givers to have employment gaps. Don’t be afraid to putall your best traits, skills, and most relevant experiencesup front. You can explain gaps if you are asked later.
Be honest and focus on what you feel you can do forthe employer. This is another good reason to cultivatestrong personal referral networks, which may look at yourresume but not rely on it. Who you are comes across inthese personal referrals, rather than what you look like onpaper. Both matter.

What mindset CHANGE
can I expect in the workforcethat didn’t exist
20 YEARS AGO?
Patty - New World-6-149 6/19/11 10:52 PM Page 62
Being “qualified” may not be enough to land joboffers in this competitive environment. Prime-of-lifersmay yearn for the “good ole days” of face time; todayit is more like Facebook time! Texting, Skype and social networking are all essential parts of today’sprofessional environment.
Things often happen at the speed of light due toadvanced technology and access to information.Flexibility, resiliency and resourcefulness are moreimportant than ever and employers can’t afford any“warm bodies.”
We now have one of the most diverse work forces with more women and men of all ages holdingexecutive and professional leadership positions in allsectors. Many of today’s businesses have adopted a“Zero Tolerance” policy towards discrimination of anykind. There is no place for sexist or discriminatory language or off color jokes. Remember nothing yousend out on email or twitter or other social media isreally private.

Patty - New World-6-149 6/19/11 10:52 PM Page 64
Please remember to send thank you letters. Email is okay, handwritten letters are even better.A sincere expression of your gratitude is good manners and good business. Even though we nowlive in a digital age with robots and seemingly impersonal computers, relationships and manners still make a big difference.

You may be able to enter new fields by being moreflexible about part time and temp jobs. You may wishto register with both local and virtual agencies. This is agreat way to get a job quickly, enlarge your networkand build new skills. It also lets employers see you and“try before they buy.” Talk with your staffing firm rep-resentative to see if they serve clients and occupationsthat are a good fit for you.
Extra hint – try to have this conversation face to face,it will help the interviewer remember you!

Patty - New World-6-149 6/19/11 10:52 PM Page 68
You’ll interview with a younger and possibly greenmanager the same way you handle yourself in any professional situation. Always be polite, upbeat and askand answer the questions.
Be open and courteous. Be careful not to come acrossas condescending to any interviewer. Your next job offermight come from someone half your age. This is whereyour confidence and life experience can add real value.Look for ways in which you can contribute to your nextjob no matter how young your new boss is.
Treat all interviewers and staff as if they were yourmost important customer – they may just become that!

online resume SUBMISSION COMPANIES?
Patty - New World-6-149 6/19/11 10:52 PM Page 74
Getting referrals for resume writers and resume submission companies and agencies or staffing firms isthe best way to find a good source for you. Beware oftotal strangers with income schemes which sound toogood to be true. Most likely they are.
If in doubt, call the firm or Google them to get moreinsight into their general reputation. Use caution anddo not send off too much personal information (creditinfo, etc.) until you know with whom you are dealing.

Q:
How can I avoid falling victim
to afake/fraudulentjob positing?
Patty - New World-6-149 6/19/11 10:52 PM Page 76
As online resources become more and more popular withjob seekers, so too does the likelihood of encounteringfake or fraudulent job postings. It is important to beaware of how to avoid falling victim to these scams;because the consequences can be quite severe. Pursuingfake job postings or scams can result in signing up for anunwanted product or service, or worse identity theft.
When utilizing the internet as a job hunting tool itis important to keep the old saying ‘if it’s too good to betrue it probably is’ in mind; as it is more relevant now inthe age of the internet than ever!
If you inquire or apply for a job posting on Craigslistor another similar Internet job resource and the posterrequests things like: a credit check, personal information(Social Security Number, bank account details) or otherimportant information, it is probably a scam.
Do your due diligence. Rather than blindly provid-ing them with what they ask, do some research their com-pany. You can put a phone number or address into asearch engine and see what kind of hits you get. Don’t justlook at the first or second result; try to look for results thatconfirm your suspicions. You can also add certain key-words to your search, like ‘scam’ or ‘fake’ to get more con-clusive results.

IN MY JOB HUNT?
Patty - New World-6-149 6/19/11 10:52 PM Page 78
Your job is to reach out to every potential hiring sourceor circle of influence. Find the firms which specialize inyour location or industry. Register and interview at sev-eral to get more interviewing experience. You will wantto show off your exceptional “hire-ability” and practiceyour elevator speech.
These intermediaries can be useful for you andshould be considered an important part of your circle ofresources. Executive recruiters are usually retained orpaid by the employer not the job hunter, so rememberthat they do not necessarily “work for you.” A recruiter’slivelihood depends on assembling and placing lots ofqualified people. Talk to lots of them and gain impor-tant market “intelligence” as well as referrals.
