Dear Parents,

I am not sure where to start my letter. We have had so much to celebrate this week and so many

opportunities for children to excel and love learning with the added bonus of glorious sunshine most

days!

Six of our Year 8 pupils have been studying hard for the ISEB Common Academic Scholarship

examinations which took place at the beginning of May. These gruelling exams are not for the faint

hearted and this week we had fabulous news:

Alex B, Henry S and Thomas W have been awarded academic scholarships to Lancing College.

Theo C and Erin R have been awarded academic exhibitions to Lancing College, and

Erin W has gained entry to Brighton College on scholarship papers. I am immensely proud of all of these

young people who have worked so hard and achieved at the highest level. They are a great credit to their

school and their families.

On Monday, our senior peer angels led by Beatrice T, in Year 7, delivered an assembly to the Prep School

for the start of Mental Health Week. The children spoke with compassion and knowledge about a subject

which has relevance for everyone and we were all very proud of them. While older children were

learning about mental health, our Year 2 pupils boarded a bus and departed for Marwell Zoo to learn

about the animals there. They were still full of excitement about all they had seen in our assembly on

Tuesday morning. Favourites were penguins and meerkats!

On Tuesday some of our Year 6 pupils travelled to Lancing College to take part in the annual Science

Challenge whilst others went to play at West Worthing Lawn Tennis Club. We didn’t win the science

challenge this year but we were delighted that Emma S was part of the group that won the Chemistry

prize and Cal N was part of the group that won the Physics prize. Everyone enjoyed the afternoon.

On Wednesday morning, Kenny Tutt, this year’s winner of Masterchef visited us and I have rarely seen

such a frenzy of excitement in school! He baked scones with the nursery children and took part in a

Ready Steady Cook, omelette challenge narrowly beating Mrs Milling who switched off her induction

ring by accident part way through the challenge! Kenny’s messages for the children were incredibly

powerful. He spoke about the importance of doing something he loved and the fact that in order to

succeed you have to be prepared to fail and pick yourself up and keep going. Felix D in Year 8

interviewed him in our assembly and his answers to questions from a young Masterchef expert were

thoughtful, honest and fascinating. Thank you, Kenny. We think you’re great!

Thursday brought radiant sunshine and a new after school musical event, ‘Fizz on the Lawn’. The

afternoon started with the Concert Band, followed by CSI, the sax and clarinet group, and then a group

of talented musicians from Lancing College which included four of our past pupils and Kitty, Mrs

Casey’s talented daughter, who is currently performing in Madama Butterfly at Glyndebourne. It was a

joyful evening of music with families sitting on picnic blankets in front of our new drama studio. We

would like to thank Dr Morgan-Williams and Mr Chris Langworthy for helping us to create something

so special.

This afternoon, Henry S, Will T, Joe C, Bradley H departed to the Bede's Tennis Tournament at East-

bourne. At the time of writing I am waiting to hear how they have done and I am hoping for good news!

Tomorrow we have our final Open Morning of the academic year and I would like to thank in advance

those of you who are supporting us for this occasion. It will finish in time for everyone to get home for

the Royal Wedding!

Many congratulations to: Zen R, Zach P, John H, Danny B and Loic M who represented the school at the

Chess Sussex MegaFinal last Saturday. The MegaFinal is an individual event (not a school team event)

and includes players of county and national standard. We are proud of them all and delighted that Zen,

Zach and Danny made it through to the Gigafinal.

To qualify for the GigaFinal is an outstanding achievement and needs a score of 3.5 from games at the

MegaFinal.) A full report on the Sussex MegaFinal with lots of photos can be found at

https://sussexjuniorchess.org/sussex-megafinal/

Many congratulations also to Sophia B, who competed at English Championship qualifiers for trampolin-

ing last weekend and in a very daunting environment completed two clean routines and came a respect-

able 26th out of 33. This is a major achievement as she does not yet have the level of difficulty of the older

children in her group and it bodes very well for the future.

The Good Schools’ Guide has published a brilliant review of Lancing College which you may like to

read. Please follow the link:

https://www.goodschoolsguide.co.uk/schools/lancing-college/24E6C96#tab_review

Next week we look forward to more music on Wednesday at our Pre-Prep concert in the afternoon and

Prep Soiree in the evening. If you would like to join us for the Soiree, drinks will be served at 5.30pm in

the dining room. The Soiree will start at 6.00pm.

On Thursday, we will welcome our new Reception children to our annual Teddy Bears’ Picnic. This is

always an exciting occasion.

On Friday, Year 4 will be visiting Pulborough Brooks and, after school, the LPWA will be raising funds

by selling ice pops in the playground for ‘Frozen Friday’! What a lovely way to complete this half term!

Have a very happy weekend.

Best wishes,

Please note that there is no Senior Art Club on Monday due to a Staff Liaison Meeting at the College.

Mrs Lloyd

On Tuesday, twelve Year 6 pupils headed up the hill to Lancing College to the

annual Prep Schools’ Science Challenge. We were put into groups with children

from other schools to complete biology, chemistry or physics challenges. These

included building a birds’ nest, using quicklime to cool things and making a

marble run. While the scores were added up we watched a talk on our cosmic

address from a doctor from the University of Portsmouth. Then came the prize

giving. Emma was part of the group that won the Chemistry prize and Cal was

part of the group that won the Physics prize. Well done everyone and I hope

you enjoyed it.

Mrs N Goodman

Exam Dates

The children will need the following costumes and we would be very grateful if you could provide them

with:

Smart plain blue jeans without rips, logos or other markings

A single colour t-shirt – this can be plain red/blue/orange/yellow/green/purple. It is essential that the t-

shirt is completely plain without any logos or pictures

Plain white pumps or trainers, again without logos or additional colours

It would be very helpful if the costume could be ready immediately after the May half term with all

items of clothing individually named and brought to school in a clearly named and robust plastic bag. If

you have any problems with this costume please contact Mrs Goodson via email jgood-

Cricket

First team 144 for 3 v Sompting Abbotts 101 for 6 Won by 43 runs

Once again the boys produced some super cricket to win comfortably on Wednesday afternoon. LPW

were first in bat and with Ozzy R scoring a rapid 45 runs and Ethan F scoring 40, the First team were

able to score a fantastic 144 runs. The ten bowlers were also good. Jack B was a pick with a wicket for

just 5 runs. An excellent all round performance in the field which allowed the First team to win with

ease by 43 runs—well done! Player of the match: The whole team.

U8/9s 249 for 2 v Sompting Abbotts 227 for 4 Won by 15 runs (A)

The Year 3 and 4 boys were put into bat and despite losing a couple of early wickets, produced some

stunning shots scoring 8 boundaries in total. Alex W and Joseph M in particular played some super

cricket when in bat. A final total of 249 runs was a deserved score for some positive cricket. The boys

then bowled well and with discipline, with Ollie R and Oscar G the pick of the bowlers, and Sompting

Abbotts were restricted to 227, allow Lancing Prep to win by 15 runs. A fantastic afternoon which was

played in the correct spirit, with Lancing Prep producing an excellent display—well done! Player of the

match: The whole team.

Mr Richards

Colts v Sompting Abbotts

We won the game meaning that we are unbeaten so far this year. LPW were set the task of batting first

and did very well despite a slow start. Max W and Marley R opened the batting and put on a good

partnership. Marley R scored 14 before being caught. Cal N came in and continued the LPW run-

scoring with 17 before Max W was run out. Will O’B batted well for the final 2 overs to help LPW to 86-

2 off of 15 overs. The LPW bowling attack were firing on all cylinders. Louis B took a wicket with the

very first ball of the innings, hitting middle stump. Marley R continued his brilliant performance by

getting two wickets in two balls but unfortunately couldn’t get his hat-trick. Will O’B chipped in with a

wicket and Cal N also got one with a vicious in-swinger to hit off-stump. Sompting Abbotts finished on

64-5. Another excellent victory. Well done! Marley R was player of the match for the second consecutive

game.

Mr Payne

Rounders

U9 v Dorset House Won 6½-3½

We started off by fielding in this competitive game. Some accurate bowling and lovely communication

amongst the team ensured we fielded the ball to the correct place. When we went into bat, Autumn

scored 2 cracking rounders and the others contributed well to half rounders. We now need to be more

aware of where our team mates are so that we don’t run them out. A good game played by all. Thank

you to the parents who came to support us. Batter of the game: Yasmin G Fielder of the game: Beth K

U8 v Dorset House U9 team Lost 6–11½

A tough game for the U8s as they haven’t had much experience. They started by batting first and many

of our team scored some half rounders. It was difficult as we struggled to make contact with the ball and

Dorset House fielded really well limiting our chances. We struggled with deciding where to send the

ball but Phoebe did a great job as bowler and we managed to stump a few players out. A great training

game. Well done to all the team a great effort. Thank you to the parents who came to support us. Batter

of the game: Maya P-S Fielder of the game: Frannie C

Rounders U11/12/13 v Dorset House Lost 8-19

This was a tough game, the girls did very well but we were out match. We fielded first, Pippa bowled

brilliantly and we managed to get a few of the Dorset house girls out. When we went into bat we strug-

gled to score rounders as Dorset house we extremely good at fielding. In the second innings we began to

think about all the batters on the pitch not just the one who was in the batting square. This meant we got

a few more of the Dorset House players out. Our second innings of batting was better we made better

contact with the ball and were able to score a few more rounders. A good game, thank you to the par-

ents who came to support us. Batter of the game: Sophie W Fielder of the game: Anna W

Rounders U8 v Windlesham Hove Won 5½-3½

This game we used as a training game and coached the girls through the different tactics. We batted first

scoring a couple of rounders. The girls worked hard to get as far as they could on each bat. When we

went into field Phoebe bowled beautifully and Lotta did well to get a few people out at her base. Our

next innings of batting we were far more confident and more of the girls made contact with the ball and

we managed to score more whole rounders and some half rounders. In the second innings the girls

moved positions and we continued to field well getting more players out. Overall a fantastic game

where the girls learnt lots. Fielder of the game: Phoebe Batter of the Game: Purdey M

Mrs Fudge

Rounders U10/U11 v Dorset House (Lost 18½-29)

Our fielding was good and we managed to stump out 6 of the opposition. Our deep fielders were also

quick to come forward and back up posts when needed. Batting is an area we need to develop, however,

we did accumulate 8½ rounders during the first innings. In the second innings we were more aware of

the strong hitters and where they would be placing the ball. LPW managed to stump out 4 of the oppo-

sition this time round. During our last batting innings we took more risks which paid off slightly. Grace

T produced some great hits during both innings and the rest of the girls made good contact when strik-

ing the ball. The whole team worked hard and there were clear calls. Thank you to those parents who

were able to come and support our girls. Girl of the girl: Emma S

U9 Rounders v Windlesham School

This was a lovely training game where the sun was shining and both teams were playing at the same

ability level. The main focus of the afternoon was working on awareness when running after batting.

LPW made good contact with the ball and were quick to run to first base. They are beginning to under-

stand that they can run on to the next base if the baller hasn’t got the ball and that next base hasn’t been

stumped. When fielding our girls were more aware of making way for the opposition when they were

batting so as not to cause obstruction and giving away half a rounder for this. There was great team-

work and communication and some brave decisions. Well done girls — a great effort. Girl of the game:

Grace W. Thank you to those parents who were able to come and support.

Any Dream Will Do

Joseph: I closed my eyes, drew back the curtain

To see for certain what I thought I knew

Far far away someone was weeping

But the world was sleeping, any dream will do

Joseph/Choir: I wore my coat (I wore my coat) with golden lining (ah…)

Bright colors shinning (ah….) wonderful and new

And in the east (and in the east) the dawn was breaking (ah….)

And the world was waking, (ah….) , any dream will do

Joseph: (Choir: ahs) A crash of drums a flash of light

My golden coat flew out of sight

The colors faded into darkness

Joseph: I was left alone (ah…..)

Joseph/Choir: May I return (May I return) to the beginning (ah…)

The light is dimming (ah….) and the dream is too

The world and I (The world and I) we are still waiting (ah….)

Still hesitating, (ah….) , any dream will do

Joseph: (Choir: ahs) A crash of drums a flash of light

My golden coat flew out of sight

The colors faded into darkness

Joseph: I was left alone (ah…..)

Joseph/Choir: May I return (May I return) to the beginning (ah…)

Still hesitating, (ah….) , any dream will do

Jacob and Sons

Choir Way way back many centuries ago,

Not long after the Bible began

Jacob lived in the land of Canaan,

A fine example of a family man.

Choir and Brothers: Jacob, Jacob and sons,

Choir Depended on farming to earn their keep.

Choir and Brothers: Jacob, Jacob and sons,

Choir Spent all of his days in the fields with sheep.

Choir Jacob was the founder of a whole new nation

Thanks to the number of children he had

He was also known as Israel, but most of the time

His sons and his wives used to call him Dad.

Choir and Brothers: Jacob, Jacob and sons,

Choir Men of the soil, of the sheaf and crook

Page 17: Lancing College Weekly Broadsheet Summer Term Preparatory … · Page 1 Weekly Broadsheet Summer Term 18 May 2018 worthing@lancing.org.uk Dear Parents, I am not sure where to start

Jacob Joseph's mother, she was quite my favourite wife

I never really loved another all my life

And Joseph was my joy because

He reminded me of her

Choir Through young Joseph, Jacob lived his youth again Ba-ba, ba-ba

Loved him, praised him, gave him all he could, but then Ba-ba, ba-ba

It made the rest feel second best Oo-ee-oo, Oo-ee-oo-oo

And even if they were - And Even if they were -

Brothers Being told we're also-rans

Does not make us Joseph fans

Choir But where they had really missed the boat is

Brothers We're great guys but no-one seems to notice

Choir Joseph's charm and winning smile Ah

Failed to slay them in the aisle Ah

And his father couldn't see the danger Ah

He could not imagine any danger Ah

He just saw in Joseph all his dreams come true

Jacob wanted to show the world he loved his son

To make it clear that Joseph was the special one

So Jacob bought his son a coat

A multi-coloured coat to wear

Brothers Joseph's coat was elegant, the cut was fine Ba-ba, ba-ba

The tasteful style was the ultimate in good design Ba-ba, ba-ba

And this is why it caught the eye Oo-ee-oo, Oo-ee-oo-oo

A king would stop and stare A king would stop and stare

Choir And when Joseph tried it on

He knew his sheepskin days were gone

Joseph's Dream

Choir Joseph's coat annoyed his brothers

Brothers But what makes us mad

Are the things that Joseph tells us of the

Dreams he's often had

Joseph I dreamed that in the fields one day (Choir: La, la, la…)

The corn gave me a sign

Your eleven sheaves of corn

All turned and bowed to mine

My sheaf was quite a sight to see

A golden sheaf and tall

Yours were green and second-rate

And really rather small

Brothers Small! This is not the kind of thing

We brothers like to hear

It seems to us that Joseph and his

Dreams should disappear

Joseph I dreamed I saw eleven stars (Choir: La, la, la…)

The sun the moon and sky

Bowing down before my star,

It made me wonder why

Could it be that I was born

For higher things than you?

A post in someone's government

Page 21: Lancing College Weekly Broadsheet Summer Term Preparatory … · Page 1 Weekly Broadsheet Summer Term 18 May 2018 worthing@lancing.org.uk Dear Parents, I am not sure where to start

A ministry or two

Brothers The dreams of our dear brother are

The decade's biggest yawn

His talk of stars and golden sheaves

Is just a load of corn

Not only is he tactless but

He's also rather dim

For there's eleven of us and

There's only one of him

The dreams of course will not come true

That is, we think they won't come true

That is, we hope they won't come true

What if he's right all along?

The dreams are more than crystal clear

The writing on the wall

Means that Joseph some day soon

Will rise above us all

The accuracy of the dreams

We brothers do not know

But one thing we are sure about;

The dreamer, (choir: dreamer),

dreamer, (choir: dreamer), All: dreamer, dreamer has to go!

Poor, Poor Joseph

Choir: Next day, far from home,

the brothers planned the repulsive crime

Brothers: Let us grab him now, do him in, while we've got the time

Choir: This they did and made the most of it

Tore his coat and flung him in a pit

Page 22: Lancing College Weekly Broadsheet Summer Term Preparatory … · Page 1 Weekly Broadsheet Summer Term 18 May 2018 worthing@lancing.org.uk Dear Parents, I am not sure where to start

Brothers: Let us leave him here, all alone, and he's bound to die

Choir: When some Ishmaelites, a hairy crew, came riding by

In a flash the brothers changed their plan

Brothers: We need cash! Let's sell him if we can

Choir: Poor poor Joseph, what'cha gonna do?

Things look bad for you, hey, what'cha gonna do?

Poor poor Joseph, what'cha gonna do?

Things look bad for you, hey, what'cha gonna do?

Brothers: Could you use a slave, you hairy bunch of Ishmaelites?

Young, strong, well-behaved,

going cheap and he reads and writes

Choir: In a trice the dirty deed was done

Silver coins for Jacob's favorite son

Then the Ishmaelites galloped off with a slave in tow

Off to Egypt where Joseph was not too keen to go

It wouldn't be a picnic he could tell

Joseph: I don't speak Egyptian very well

Choir: Joseph's brothers tore his precious multi-colored coat

Having ripped it up, they next attacked a passing goat

Soon the wretched creature was no more

They dipped his coat in blood and guts and gore

All Oh now brothers, how low can you stoop?

You make a sordid group, hey, how low can you stoop?

Poor poor Joseph, sold to be a slave

Situation's grave, hey, sold to be a slave

There's One More Angel in Heaven

Whistling intro

Judah: Father, we've something to tell you, a story of our time

A tragic but inspiring tale of manhood in its prime

You know you had a dozen sons

well now that's not quite true

But feel no sorrow, do not grieve, he would not want you to

Brothers/(Choir) : There's one more angel in Heaven (ah….)

There's one more star in the sky (ah….)

Joseph we'll never forget you (ah….)

It's tough but we're gonna get by

There's one less place at our table (ah….)

There's one more tear in my eye (ah….)

But Joseph the things that you stood for (ah….)Levi: Like -- er, truth and light never die

Simeon: When I think of his last great battle

A lump comes to my throat

It takes a man who knows not fear

To wrestle with a goat

Brothers: His blood-stained coat is tribute to his final sacrifice

His body may be past its peak but his soul's in paradise

Brothers/(Choir) : There's one more angel in Heaven (ah….)

There's one more star in the sky (ah….)

Joseph we'll never forget you (ah….)

It's tough but we're gonna get by

Brothers/(Choir) : There's one less place at our table (ah….)

There's one more tear in my eye (ah….)

But Joseph the things that you stood for (ah….)Levi: Like -- er, truth and light never die

Brothers: Carve his name with pride and courage

Gad: Let no tear be shed

If he had not laid down his life we all would now be dead

Close Every Door To Me

Joesph: Close every door to me, hide all the world from me

Bar all the windows and shut out the light

Do what you want with me, hate me and laugh at me

Darken my daytime and torture my night

If my life were important I would ask will I live or die

But I know the answers lie far from this world

Close every door to me, keep those I love from me

Children of Israel are never alone

For I know I shall find my own peace of mind

For I have been promised a land of my own

Choir Close every door to me, keep those I love from me

Children of Israel are never alone

La, la, la etc.

Joseph: Just give me a number instead of my name

Forget all about me and let me decay

I do not matter, I'm only one person

Destroy me completely then throw me away

Page 25: Lancing College Weekly Broadsheet Summer Term Preparatory … · Page 1 Weekly Broadsheet Summer Term 18 May 2018 worthing@lancing.org.uk Dear Parents, I am not sure where to start

Go, Go, Go Joseph!

Singing Narrators 1&2: Joseph's luck was really out, his spirits and his fortune low

Alone he sat, alone he thought

of happy times he used to know

Choir Group 1 (Y 4,5 & 8): Hey dreamer! Don't be so upset

Choir Group 2 (Y 3,6 & 7): Hey Joseph! You're not beaten yet

Narrators and Choir: Go Go Go Joseph you know what they say

Hang on now Joseph you'll make it one day

Sha la la Joseph, you're doing fine,

You and your Dreamcoat ahead of your time

Singing Narrators 1&2: The prison walls were wet and black

his chains were heavy weighed him down

A candle was his only light,

the hungry rats the only sound

Choir Group 1 (Y 4,5 & 8): Hey dreamer! Don't be so upset

Choir Group 2 (Y 3,6 & 7): Hey Joseph! You're not beaten yet

Singing Narrators 1&2: In the prison cell with Joseph

were two very frightened men

Baker and Butler: We don't think that we will ever see the light of day again

Hey Joseph! Help us if you can

We've had dreams that we don't understand

Singing Narrators 1&2: Both men were servants of Pharaoh the king

Both in the doghouse for doing their thing

One was a baker, a cook in his prime

One was a butler, the Jeeves of his time

Joseph: Tell me of your dreams my friends,

and I will tell you what they show

Though I cannot guarantee to get it right, I'll have a go

Singing Narrators 1&2: First the butler, trembling, took the floor

Nervously he spoke of what he saw

Butler: There I was standing in front of a vine

I picked some grapes and I crushed them for wine

I gave it to Pharaoh who drank from my cup

I tried to interpret but I had to give up

Joseph: You will soon be free, my friend, so do not worry any more

The king will let you out of here,

you'll buttle as you did before

Singing Narrators 1&2: Next the baker rose to tell his dream

Hoping it would have a similar theme

Baker: There I was standing with baskets of bread

High in the sky I saw birds overhead

Who flew to the baskets and ate every slice

Give me the message -- like his would be nice

Page 27: Lancing College Weekly Broadsheet Summer Term Preparatory … · Page 1 Weekly Broadsheet Summer Term 18 May 2018 worthing@lancing.org.uk Dear Parents, I am not sure where to start

Joseph: Sad to say your dream is not the kind of dream I'd like to get

Pharaoh has it in for you, your execution date is set

Don't rely on all I say I saw

It's just that I have not been wrong before
