FROM THE PRESIDENT The point is this: whoever sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and whoever sows bountifully will also reap bountifully. [2 Corinthians 9:6-7]. All things have their season, and in their time all things pass under heaven. [Ecclesiastes 3:1]

For over 10 years, these two scripture verses have accompanied me, and in some cases haunted me, as I’ve worked to take Kennedy Catholic into a new season, to steward the gifts given to me, plant seeds for our

future to produce great bounty, and of course, not rushing into a season we were not prepared for.

Our initial school board led by the likes of John Goodwin Jr.’79, Joe Simmons ’72, and recent past board chair Bob Rebar ‘72 patiently steered to a vision of what an aggressive advisory board should pursue. The gift of their expertise has resulted in a board that actively supports five committees that have contributed significantly to our 2020 Vision. Those seeds planted early have resulted in three of our single biggest gifts this year, a development plan that is supporting the construction of phase one of our athletic field ($2.4 million), phase two of our science complex ($1.5 million) while making significant upgrades to our current facility.

Seasons affect our staffing as well. We say good bye and happy retirement to six amazing teachers: Mike Burris, Joanne Lawrence, Jack Naughton, Mike Edelbrock, Linda Morgan and Angela Hunter. Such exemplary teachers have stewarded the best of our resources, our students, into successful colleges and universities, but more importantly, successful and contributive men and women.

Entering our second year in the modified block schedule has shown an increase in the number of students taking more science and mathematics. We’ve added engineering, robotics, and blended learning opportunities to engage all learners, and with the intentional design of our science complex, teachers will see more opportunities to collaborate bringing more focus on the use of technology as both an instructional practice and promoting student engagement and deeper thinking.

Last, we continue to pursue those families that represent the very foundation of Kennedy Catholic; a school that continues to produce doctors, lawyers, priests, sisters, actors, producers, teachers, athletes, business men and women, entrepreneurs of all kinds and of course, successful graduates that exemplify leadership at all levels following Christ. “We’re not in Kansas” is accurate! We are located in Burien; the home of the Lancers; and pursuing what God intended us to be!

Gratefully,

Michael Prato

Kennedy Catholic High School’s

innovative four-year “STEAM” Program

(Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts,

Math) motivates and educates students

in ways unique to the Lancer community.

S C I E N C E T E C H N O L O G Y E N G I N E E R I N G A R T S M AT H

The demand for Kennedy Catholic’s cutting-edge Science courses is greater than ever before. In response, generous donors and foundations have provided the necessary resources to completely renovate and recreate four state-of-the-art science labs — providing the necessary facilities to rapidly expand the number of selections and courses offered. Many students are choosing to take four full years of science and a growing number enter college with science credits fulfilled at Kennedy Catholic.

Technology is integrated in every program, department and activity at Kennedy Catholic. Students choose a personal device to supplement their instructor taught lessons. Classrooms are equipped with high speed internet and the latest technology is embraced in curriculum planning and presentation.

One of the newest and most exciting additions to the curriculum is a series of Engineering courses designed to challenge and excite budding engineers and designers. Kennedy Catholic was blessed with the donation of a highly sought Makerbot Replicator 2 CD printer allowing students to make advanced quality models of their creations. This technology is rare in high school settings and its impact is best demonstrated through the incredible work our young engineers are producing. We are proud to announce the launching of a robotics program in the fall of 2014.

The Arts have been a source of great pride for Kennedy Catholic since our inception. Our marching band, drama, orchestra, choirs, and fine arts programs are award-winning and involve hundreds of students every year. From parades to concert halls to the walls of acclaimed art galleries, the talent of our artists can be seen throughout the region. In film making, students develop the art of media creation, exploring creative and technical aspects of film production. Students studying fine art explore personal creativity through various mediums and techniques. Kennedy Catholic students have won awards, year after year, at the Washington State Fair High School Art Show.

And finally, Math. Our students choose from fifteen math courses ranging from algebra to honors calculus and AP Statistics. Our math teachers instill a passion and appreciation for the subject which is proven with our students success in math related subjects in college and beyond.

With the knowledge and experiences gained in Kennedy Catholic’s unique STEAM disciplines, Lancers excel in college and their future careers. We are proud to provide an integrated system of high standards to engage all students in an academically rigorous and faith-filled core curricula.

AQUINAS HONORS PROGRAM

The theme of the 2013-14 school year was the great quote from St. Catherine of Siena. At Kennedy Catholic, opportunities are abundant to “be who God meant you to be.” The Aquinas Honors Program offers a curriculum to students seeking an advanced academic challenge including upper division honors classes in the Arts, English, World Languages, Math, Social Studies and Science Departments. Approximately 40% juniors and seniors take at least two college-credit bearing courses at Kennedy Catholic.

NATIONAL HONOR SOCIETY

In May, we welcomed new inductees to the 2014-15 Excalibur chapter of the National Honor Society. Parents, students and friends were present for the Induction Ceremony in the Dillman Center. Our membership is now 77 students strong! The National Honor Society is a prestigious service organization and its members often participate as officers or active members in the many service organizations and/or activity groups. NHS students also offer their time as Kennedy Catholic ambassadors for the Admissions Office for open houses and recruiting events.

The National Honor Society accepts students based upon specific criteria including GPA and honors level courses. Major universities recognize the importance of NHS membership while reviewing applications. At graduation, members wear the red honor cord, signifying distinguished membership.

At the Baccalaureate Mass on June 6, 2014, Brandon Root presented a wonderful speech to his class about their four years together. His classmates selected him for this responsibility and he delivered. Below is an excerpt from his speech:

Here we sit, adorned in these curtain dresses looking like we have just stepped out of a Harry Potter movie. Our friends are different. Our minds are different. Our skills are different. We are different and yet we are still ourselves. We go forth today to continue to fulfill God’s wish for each of us. I have seen in us, the Class of

2014, some of the best the human condition can present. We are risk takers, optimists, team players, scientists, scholars, Searchers... I can hear God applauding over our transformation over these last four years and I can tell it is a standing ovation. So, on behalf of the Class of 2014, thank-you parents, teachers, and all who helped us reach these seats today. And to you, the Class of 2014, Dream Big! Then, if only a portion of your dreams come true, you’ll still be a huge success and I’m sure God’s applause will continue to ring clear for all of you!

ATHLETIC FIELD

Kennedy Catholic is excited to introduce the William F. Eisiminger Athletic Field! The Athletic Field project has been discussed and envisioned for nearly 50 years since the school’s inception. It has captured the excitement, support and spirit of countless community members, school families, future families, businesses, youth groups, alumni and donors. Seeing the dream of so many come to life has been an invigorating and enlightening experi-ence. A focus on the athletic program and Booster Club and their unceasing commitment to historically place this as a priority—to now a reality—is truly something special.

The field will be used for home practices and competitions in football, boys & girls soccer, boys & girls lacrosse, track & field, marching band, and fitness classes. The master plan for the athletic complex includes the athletic field, stadium seating, tennis courts, improvements to Faccone Field (baseball), a field house complete with a weight room, restrooms and more.

Phase One of the complex is now underway and scheduled for completion in time for Homecoming 2014 (barring any unforeseen delays). Phase One includes the beautiful turfed field, temporary seating, a temporary scoreboard, fencing, engineering, mechanical and structure work, and more.

To all our donors, advocates, neighbors, students, fans and volunteers, this is your field. Your support and determina-tion is taking shape before our eyes and we cannot wait to share it with you!

For more information on this project, or to support Phase

Two, please contact Amy Hall, at [email protected].

Dedicated March 28, 2014 In honor of Joe Faccone

On a typical spring afternoon in Seattle, rain postponed the Lancer Varsity Baseball game, and the Faccone Field dedication moved to the Dillman Center. In a packed room filled with alumni, current families, faculty and friends, Mr. Joe Faccone was honored and threw a baseball (yes indoors!) to kick off the festivities.

Special thanks to all of the great people who helped to build the field from 1974-76 and those who updated the field in May 2014.

A G R A N D D AYFriday, May 2, was a beautiful morning to welcome over 200 Lancer grandparents to experience high school life at Kennedy Catholic first hand. The Parents Club hosted a wonderful reception in the Dillman Center with delicious food, flowers for our guests and photographs with grandchildren. Then our guests were given grand tours by their grandchildren of the campus and classrooms.

Perhaps the highlight of the day, was a memorable Mass with the student body in the gym celebrated by Kennedy Catholic Chaplain, Fr. Dolejsi. This included the May Crowning of the Blessed Virgin Mary. Grandparents and guests were honored and blessed by all. The Mass, May Crowning, and blessing was a touching example of how our faith embodies every aspect of our community. We are honored to share our commitment to Catholic identity with our extended families and support the spiritual formation of our entire community.

Grandparents and Special Family Friends: Please plan to join us for our next annual celebration on Friday, May 1, 2015.

On Saturday, April 12, the Kennedy Catholic Gym was transformed into a Mardi-Gras adventure! The 2014 KATCH Auction was a memorable example of the passionate and generous Lancer community. Thank you to all involved for an amazing evening! We are so grateful to all our sponsors, donors, guests, volunteers, students, faculty and staff for making the 2014 auction a huge success. With the generosity of nearly 400 guests and over 700 donors, we raised record funds for students and programs plus an addi- tional $210,000 for the new athletic field during the live auction raise-the-paddle.

The KATCH Auction would not be possible without the generosity of our parents, alumni and supporters and the hard work and dedication of our volunteers. We appreciate the tremendous contribution of all our auction committee members and our 2014 KATCH Chairs, Tim and Christine Smith.

We hope you will join us

next year for KATCH 2015

on Saturday, April 25.

Planning is already

underway!

If you have the opportunity, please help us to welcome the Class of 2018.

We are thrilled and honored to welcome

our incoming Kennedy Catholic students

and families. This year families join us

from over 48 different zip codes; from

the greater Seattle area, Bainbridge

Island, Mercer Island, Sammamish,

Tacoma, Federal Way and many other

areas. We look forward to another year

of great memories and accomplishments

and believe this

upcoming year will be unforgettable.

Our entire faculty and staff are excited

for many new possibilities.

The mission of Kennedy Catholic High

School is to Graduate Leaders Following

Christ in a school community that is

accessible, diverse and committed to

pursuing the fullest potential of every

student. This would not be possible

without the continued support of our

outstanding alumni community. It is

through your recommendation that

many new families seek out our school.

We are proud of the Kennedy Catholic

family.

Kennedy Catholic graduates are pre-

pared for elite colleges and universities,

nationally and internationally, thanks

to an exceptional teaching staff, an

experienced college counseling team

and a faculty that advocates for the

success and achievement of all students.

Building a well-rounded and talented

student body through the admissions

process creates an environment where

students thrive in a dynamic way. Our

incoming class this year is an amazing

group of students — not because of any

one particular student, but because of

the many incredible gifts and talents

each of them and each of their families

bring to us. We see every student as a

very important part of making the group

what it is — unique and remarkable.

It is the depth of our spiritual, academic,

athletic and co-curricular programs that

distinguishes us from other high schools.

At Kennedy Catholic each new student

has the chance to explore their God

given gifts and talents.
