Fall & Winter 2012 Issue Catalog

Soon Steelhead will be in the Feather, the

McCloud will be alive with October Caddis

and the mornings will turn cool and crisp.

The egg-drop will happen all over the valley

rivers, fueling trout and steelhead. Lakes will

turn cool, moving fish into the shallows to

forage frantically before winter sets in. It’s

the changing of the season, from summer to

fall and on into winter.

Drift boats draped with frost will be ready.

Skagit lines will be spooled and backing

knots will be checked. Fly boxes will be

stocked and the new warm Simms gear will

go into the truck. This is the time that

Mother Nature goes into survival mood. The

fish are hungry and wound up; fly fishers are

primed and ready to go. It’s a great time to

fly-fish Northern California.

With the many fly-fishing opportunities we

have, great venues, and our staff and service

– you can be on a trip of a lifetime. We don’t

just provide local trips to local waters; we

also provide fly-fishing schools, tours and

worldwide travel. Kirsten and I stand behind

each and every trip, school, tour, and travel

destination. We hold each of these trips to

our highest standards to make sure you, our

guest, have the best experience. An

experience that when remembered will

bring a smile to your face, overwhelming the

senses and fueling the fly fisher’s heart!

So get out there and fish!

Lower Sacramento

The fall is a fantastic time for the lower Sacramento

River. Fall will be alive with salmon scattered over

entry runs, constructing redds in preparation to

spawn. Wild rainbows and chrome-bright steelhead

will be lurking about the salmon, hunting for caddis,

beatis and stones stirred from the construction

work. The rainbows and steelhead linger anxiously

for the instant that the salmon initiates into active

spawning.

“Eggs and legs" are rigged, rods tested,

guests are screaming, guides are coaching

and the fish are head-shaking in anger to the

net. Smiles turn to rehashing the event and

memories are generated forever. Images

capture the thrill of the day – the sweat, the

work and the wild fish posing so perfectly for

the camera. Some of the best fishing on the

Lower Sac happens during this time. Lower

Sac drifts are $395 a day.

Feather River

The Feather River is located north of

Sacramento, centered in the city of

Oroville. This valley river offers

steelhead fishing at its best. What is

really cool about this fishery is that

it’s easy to fish with both traditional

nymphing techniques and two-

handed rod techniques. Red-headed

black leeches coupled with a pegged

bead, swung through the shallow

riffles is truly awesome. Wild and

hatchery fish are willing to eat caddis,

baetis and eggs. These fish are

gorging themselves constantly while

in the river. With thousands of

salmon to muscle through and pick

eggs off one by one, fish get fat and

get angry when pulled away from the

smorgasbord.

This is my favorite river to fish and

guide. My friends and family have all

hooked steelhead on this river and it’s

a great place to fish throughout the

fall and into the winter. Feather River

drifts are $395 per day.

Spey & Switch Schools

Spey & Switch School

Every student who takes this class walks away with the knowledge and confidence to

be able to purchase the right equipment and how to fish it!

This two-day drift boat trip school on the Feather River gives students opportunity to

sample gear and to generate much-needed muscle memory. All equipment is

included; Sage rods, Galvan reels and Rio lines for students to use. We have complete

sets of Skagit lines, MOW tips and Versileaders to tune students’ rods to perfection.

The S&S School is a great venue for anglers to learn and gain knowledge rapidly.

Students’ learning curves are vertical. Knowledge available in these schools is

equivalent to many years on the water. We break down the mechanics of the cast,

fishing situations, and mentally prepare anglers to swing on their own. These schools

are so popular with students that we have added a school for December.

Spey & Switch School December 12-13, 2012 $425 per person

The fly-fishing tours are

great. Over 50 fly-fishers

have participated in the tours

in 2012 and all have walked

away with knowledge on a

particular river, creek,

saltwater or fly-fishing

discipline. Kirsten & I

worked hard to make the

tours the best they can be.

The tours are based on the

concepts that the

intermediate to advance

angler can go on a tour of a

certain piece of water or

experience a different type of

fishing that in a word

“tunes” them up to do it on

their own. It’s basically a

cheat sheet, cliff notes, or a

crash course on a particular

subject.

Fly-Fishing Tours

Legendary Three Tour

Page 16: Lance Gray & Company Fall 2012 Catalog

Legendary Three Tour The Legendary Three Tour is one of the grand center pieces of our tour program. This

tour covers the majestic Upper Sac, McCloud River and the mighty Pit River. These

fisheries are unequal on their own and mastering either one of these rivers is a lifelong

commitment. The rivers hold legendary secrets from master fly-fishers past and

present. Wading the water is a life changing experience – almost biblical.

The tour is to introduce anglers to the rivers, bring a better understanding, and give

hands on experience with nymphing techniques. Bill Carnazzo will be our head guide

for this trip, a legend in his own right, a nymphing master.

Legendary Three Tour October 5-6, 2012 $595 per person

Eagle Lake Tour The Eagle Lake Tour is going to be a hit!

This massive still water is located just north

west of Susanville, California. Eagle Lake

Trout are unmatched in spirit and in fight.

These fish grow fast and big, with tons of

food located in the lake – it is a lake that is

made for fly-fishing.

The water is basically three different pieces

of water. The three segments are broken

down to the north, middle and southern

portions of the lake. All three segments are

different and a challenge on their own. The

tour will explore the lake showing

participants areas easily accessed and fished

by wading or in personal watercraft.

Eagle Lake Tour October 20-21, 2012

$265 per person

The Putah Creek Tour was a great

success this last winter. This little

valley foothill tail water is a great

easy place to go and fish during the

winter. The creek holds some

monster rainbows. When I say

monster I don’t mean a couple of

pounds – I am talking 8-12 pound

fish. These fish are feeding all the

time. With massive amounts of

midges, baetis and caddis the fish

feed well, but have become very

selective.

Nymphing is the number one

rigging for the assault on these

monsters. Tippet down to 6 or 7x is

common and fish fooled is easier

than fish landed! It’s a beautiful

canyon creek with access areas that

is easy for all anglers.

Valley Steelhead Tour

The Valley Steelhead Tour is a combination of two different rivers back to back. The first day we explore the Lower American River and the next day

we are on the Feather River Low Flow section. These two rivers aren’t that different. Both are tailwater fisheries with hatchery systems in place. The

main difference is the fish. The Feather fish are smaller than the American fish simply due to the fact the Feather fish are implants for the Klamath and

the American stock is from the Eel. This means there are some monster steelhead in the American.

This two-day tour is perfect for anglers looking to explore the valley river systems with nymphing or swinging methods. Switch rods are great for these

rivers due to the fact that you can use both techniques without carrying two different rods.

Worldwide Travel

Worldwide Travel is a must in the fly-fishing world. Landing exotic

fish on a fly rod is a life changing experience. An experience that

turns into an obsession that needs to be fueled with life changing

trips.

Whether it’s angling for steelhead on the Dean River, or casting

poppers in the jungle for peacock bass, or my favorite poling through

the shallow flats of Louisiana in search for huge redfish that you sight

cast too, you will be haunted by these destinations’.

Everything that you can imagine we can provide. We booked for only

the finest lodges, destinations and guides available throughout the

world. We also can arrange continental US fly-fishing trips, coupled

with a business trips, family vacation or weekend getaway. Fly-

fishing the world can be as easy as a business trip to Florida, or a

family vacation to Washington DC or a trip of a lifetime to Christmas

Island or Belize. We done it, so let us help you do it!
