President’s Report
As I conclude my first full year as President &
CEO of Lambton College, I reflect with gratitude
on the tremendous community support that
this great institution enjoys, as it has since
inception in 1966.
This past year our community partners from
business, industry, health/community service
and all levels of government came together,
along with College staff, to assist the Board of
Governors in development of a new Strategic
Plan 2013-2018. This five year plan builds on
the tremendous success of the last decades,
and charts the course for the College as we
continue to serve our community and our
Province with distinction.
Student success is key to the new Strategic Plan,
as it was during this past year. Once again,
Lambton College led the province in employer
satisfaction, with 97.5% of employers satisfied
or very satisfied with the education received by
our graduates. This success is a direct result of
the hard work of College faculty and staff, who
continue to be recognized provincially and
nationally for their exemplary contributions.
Students and alumni were also major award
winners, in recognition of academic
achievements and community involvement.
Lambton College added to its growing
reputation in applied research, with the naming
of a Lambton College NSERC-funded Industrial
Research Chair, one of the first at a Canadian
community college. A number of major grant
applications to national funding agencies were
compiled during 2012-13. These new research
initiatives will change the face of Lambton
College in the coming years.
Our Mobile Learning project gained
momentum. This ambitious initiative will
transform academic programming at Lambton
College, enabling students to access curriculum
and learning materials from anywhere through
their mobile devices. With a goal of all post-
secondary programs being ‘mobile’ by 2016-17,
this project will contribute greatly to student
success.
Students proudly represented the College in
many different ways throughout the year.
Lambton’s fledgling Enactus team (formerly
Students in Free Enterprise) made a major
contribution to community both at home and
abroad. The Fire Combat Challenge Team again
distinguished itself both provincially and
nationally. Skilled trades students were heavily
involved in a Habitat for Humanity project. Our
student government joined the College in
promoting social responsibility amongst our
students, who were active in support of a
myriad of community causes.
College facilities were renovated and upgraded
to accommodate new programs and Lambton’s
historically strong student enrolment. The
number of international students, in particular,
climbed to record heights, an enriching addition
to the diversity of our campus and community.
A planned new facility received a great deal of
attention over the past year. A new Health
Science facility is a key objective of Strategic
Plan 2013-2018. Potential partnership with
three key local health care delivery agencies
presents the College with a unique opportunity
to integrate our students’ education with the
activities of service providers to develop
innovative research into new practices of
sustainable care. Funding for this facility is
being sought from governments at all levels,
Page 5 of 12
and an advocacy initiative was launched, aimed
at raising awareness of the benefits to the area
and the Province that would accrue from a new
Health facility at Lambton College.
The wonderful volunteers associated with The
Lambton College Foundation and Alumni
Association continued to serve the College and
its students, raising funds and awareness of the
need for student financial aid and support for
College projects. The Foundation began the
groundwork for a new capital campaign to raise
funds for the planned new Health facility.
The College ended 2012-13 in a positive
financial position, enabling the Board to
increase capital fund reserves for the Mobile
Learning project and to enhance the College’s
commitment in support of the much needed
Health facility.
As we look forward to a new academic year, I
reflect with pride on the accomplishments of
2012-13, and with gratitude for the ongoing
community support for Lambton College, which
enables us to live our mission of student and
community success.
Academics
Substantial progress was made in development
of the Hybrid Learning Plan, which incorporates
a selection of modalities into the delivery of
curriculum. Faculty in a number of programs
were integral to the progress of this plan which
enables online delivery of a portion of course
curriculum.
New programs across the spectrum of
credentials added to the choices for students in
2012-13.
A one-year Certificate program in Fashion
Business was offered.
A two-year Diploma program in Digital
Photography commenced, located in a new
Digital Photography Studio in the Lambton
Residence and Conference Centre.
The Computer Programmer program, a two
year Diploma, was reintroduced.
New Diploma programs in Hairstyling and
Developmental Service Worker were
introduced in a fast-track mode, enabling
students to complete the four-term curriculum
over an intensive twelve month period.
The Diploma program in Esthetics was offered
in a redesigned fast-track model over one
intensive year.
The Sport and Recreation Management
program was redesigned to be delivered in fast-
track format, enabling completion of this
popular six-term Advanced Diploma program
over two intensive years.
Fire Science Technology Advanced Diploma was
also offered in fast-track format for the first
time.
New one year Graduate Certificates in
Therapeutic Recreation and Contemporary Law
Enforcement & Justice commenced in 2012-13.
A number of Board of Governors Certificate
programs were offered through Part-time
Studies, enabling students to gain credential
recognition for specialized study.
Online studies continued to surge as more and
more students took advantage of opportunities
afforded through Lambton College and its
affiliation with OntarioLearn.
The College continued its focus on providing
students with pathways to a variety of
academic credentials through creation of a new
Centre for Educational Pathways. A number of
new articulation agreements provided students
with credit recognition and transfer to and from
other post-secondary institutions. Lambton
College’s website was upgraded to enable
students to readily identify course equivalencies
for transfer from a number of post-secondary
institutions in Canada and abroad.
Through the Second Career program, with
funding provided by the Provincial government,
the College assisted local citizens affected by
the closure of two major employers in the area.
Significant numbers of mature students
received support from Ministry of Training,
Colleges and Universities staff and Lambton
College personnel as they enrolled in Lambton
programs to assist them to transition to new
careers.
The success of the Lambton College School to
College to Work Initiative prompted the
Ministry of Education to expand the program
across the province. Through collaboration
with local school boards, students attended
Lambton College from a number of
communities in the region, to earn dual high
school and college credits, or apprenticeship
credit through the Ontario Youth
Apprenticeship (OYAP) program, or to complete
an SSD through the highly successful School
Within a College program.
Quality
With a focus on improving student success and
the overall student experience at Lambton
College, a new Student Services organization
was put in place. Priorities included increasing
participation of aboriginal students in post-
secondary education, closer liason with student
government, and improved retention,
graduation and overall student satisfaction.
Lambton’s Quality Assurance process requires a
comprehensive, third-party review to be
conducted on every post-secondary program
every six years. Since inception of the process,
thirty-three reviews have been completed and
six more were in progress at year end. During
the year six program reviews, covering a dozen
programs, completed the recommendation
implementation stage of the review process.
College services are also subject to review. This
past year saw completion of the
implementation phase of the first group of
comprehensive service reviews.
Implementation of recommendations is in
progress.
The Pharmacy Technician program received full
accreditation for 5 years from the Canadian
Council for Accreditation of Pharmacy
Programs.
Students and Alumni
The Lambton College Firefighter Combat Team
continued its winning tradition, piling up medals
at competitions all across the country. At the
Canadian National Scott Firefit Championships,
Team Captain Ian Van Reenen was named
Canadian Rookie Firefighter for 2012, setting a
new World Record for Fire College participants,
just 1 second off the World Men’s Individual
Record. Pre-Service Firefighter Tabitha
Siegfried was the Ladies Individual Firefighter
gold medalist at the Western Quebec Scott
Firefit Regional Championships.
For his exceptional volunteer contribution, both

Year, winning recognition for her new business
from ACE (Advancing Canadian
Entrepreneurship) Canada. For this
accomplishment Amanda was named a top 10
local newsmaker.
Social Service Worker program students raised
funds and awareness for the Sarnia-Lambton
Youth Suicide Prevention Committee.
Students from Lambton College’s Fire and
Public Safety Centre of Excellence and the
Community Integration through Co-operative
Education (CICE) program collected "Shoes for
El Salvador" on behalf of Support of Lambton
for Latin America, led by Lambton faculty
member Dolores Quintanilla.
Professor Bryan Aitken was awarded the
President’s Award of Excellence for his
outstanding contribution to student and
community success.

Award for Health Sciences. A contract disaster
relief worker with the Canadian Red Cross and
recipient of the Order of the Red Cross,
Member Level, the Red Cross' highest honour,
Bonnie has brought assistance following
disasters around the globe, from Ground Zero
following 9/11, to Afghanistan, to Louisiana in
the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina.
International Education International students attended Lambton
College in record numbers in 2012-13. These
students made a mark at both the College and
across the community and Province, where they
participated in co-op and work placement
opportunities.
Students came from many parts of the world,
including large numbers from India, as a result
of the College’s participation in the Federal
Page 8 of 12
Student Partner Program, as well as from China,
Nigeria, the Caribbean and elsewhere.
Lambton College also enrolled increasing
numbers of students through partnerships with
other institutions in Canada, and off-shore with
a number of universities across China.
Research
Research funding from three major sources
(Colleges Ontario Network for Industrial
Innovation-CONII, Federal Development-
FEDDEV ARC Extension and Ontario Centres of
Excellence-OCE) resulted in seven highly
successful projects with local Small and
Medium Enterprises (SMEs), including five new
partnerships.
Lambton College was awarded one of only
twelve Canada-wide Chairs granted by the
Natural Science and Engineering Research -
Industrial Research Chair at Colleges (NSERC-
IRCC) program. Activities of the new Chair
focus on Advanced Industrial Control and
Optimization. As part of the Government of
Canada’s Digital Economy Strategy
implemented by the National Research Council,
and under its Digital Technology Adoption Pilot
Program (DTAPP), Lambton College executed a
number of successful projects to improve
productivity of the region’s industries through
adoption of digital technologies.
In 2012-13, a key research focus was in the
preparation of four major funding proposals
with potential award value of $6.65M, including
projects to establish a Lambton Water Centre,
Bluewater Technology Access Centre and a
second IRCC at Lambton College. These
proposals required the support of Lambton
College and its industrial partners, the City of
Sarnia and the County of Lambton. If funding is
granted, these projects will have a profound
impact on Lambton College and the Sarnia-
Lambton area.
A consortium-led project to locate the novel
Atmospheric Vortex Engine (AVE) technology
on the grounds of the College was well
underway by year-end. The Sarnia-based,
highly innovative technology creates value from
low-temperature heat that would otherwise be
wasted. When proven, it could become a
game-changing technology globally by lowering
costs and increasing efficiencies for industries
that have large quantities of low-temperature
waste heat. This innovative structure will serve
as a prototype for further commercialization of
a unique alternative energy source and will
provide students with excellent research
experience.
A project to build a novel, large-scale Bio-
Generator at Lambton College commenced in
collaboration with Western University and a
regional company. Part of a previously awarded
$2.3M grant from NSERC, this project is just one
facet of the umbrella Renewable Energy
Conversion & Storage Research (RECSR) project
which commenced in 2010. Work continued
throughout the year on an array of energy
conversion and storage initiatives under the
RECSR project.
The second Annual Research Day showcased
the successful results of collaborative applied
research conducted jointly by local business,
industry and Lambton College faculty and staff.
Facilities Major information technology improvements
were implemented, as the backbone for the
Mobile Learning project was established.
Additional servers, server room power
improvements, network and wireless upgrades,
and additional software licences were acquired
and implemented on a phase-in approach to
the project.
A new tutoring space for students in the
Community Integration through Cooperative
Education program was created with funding
provided by a generous donor.
The main Student Study area in the South
Building was given a total makeover, including
addition of thin-client computers for student
use. This transformation was made possible by
a generous donation to the Inspiring the Future
Capital Campaign.
The Welding Shop renewal project was
wrapped up with the construction and
equipping of a covered, fenced-in outdoor area,
outfitted with grinding booths for use with
portable welding equipment.
The Cold Tower at the Fire and Public Safety
Centre of Excellence was retrofitted to enable it
to be used for search and rescue training.
Work was completed in the Technology
Department Hydrogen Lab with addition of
highly specialized equipment provided through
generous donation. The Flow Cell
hardware/software exposes students to real-
time state-of-charge monitoring of
charge/discharge cycling and performance in a
voltage controlled operation.
The students enrolled in the new Digital
Photography program were accommodated in a
newly constructed multi-purpose Digital
Photography / Learning Studio.
A major sustainability project involved
replacement of the College’s out-dated chiller
with a new, more energy-efficient chiller
system, providing students and staff with a
much more comfortable environment in which
to learn and work.
A major Provincial study to identify and quantify
space at Ontario’s colleges was undertaken with
funding from the Province. Lambton College
participated in the Colleges Ontario Facilities
Space Index program, cataloguing all College
facilities by size, type and use. The resultant
report presents a useful roadmap for future
capital improvement.
The Lambton College Foundation
Lambton College, its students and graduates
received tremendous support from The
Lambton College Foundation and the Lambton
College Alumni Association throughout the
past year.
The Lambton College Foundation successfully
concluded the Inspiring the Future $5 Million
Fundraising Campaign in support of capital
improvements for Lambton College. The
campaign surpassed its goal, and the
community celebrated with the College as
students at the Fire and Public Safety Centre of
Excellence raced up the fire training tower with
cards spelling out the $5,087,495 raised. The
outstanding result was due to the hard work and
dedication of community volunteers from small
business, major industry, the financial sector,
service clubs and local government as well as
Lambton College alumni, faculty and staff. The
generosity of all of these partners ensures that
the high quality learning environment at
Lambton College will be maintained into the
future.

The Foundation unveiled a new Strategic Plan
2012-2016 which charts the course for the
future, and focuses on raising financial support
for the new Centre for Health Education and
Sustainable Care.
Strengthening the relationship between current
students and The Lambton College Alumni
Association was a key objective of the Alumni
Association. A number of key fundraising
activities enabled The Association to continue
to contribute to its endowed scholarship fund
during the year.
The staff of The Lambton College Foundation
and Alumni Association hosted a Colleges
Ontario Advancement Learning Conference.
Professional colleagues in Development from all
across the Ontario College system gathered at
Lambton College to learn and share ideas,
