TIRITEA SCHOOL NEWSLETTER November 5, 2014 LAMB, CALF AND PET DAY What a fantastic day we had on Saturday for our Lamb, Calf and Pet Day. There were a few sprinkles but with the tents and gazebos, we were well catered for. Many thanks to everyone who helped with the organisation of the day – setting up, purchasing and cooking food, selling, organizing the raffles, helping with the animals, running the Cake Auction, judging … it all went very smoothly thanks to a great team effort. With the lamb and calf entries, plus a variety of pets, the amazing cakes and the children’s indoor exhibits, there was certainly plenty to see. The Cake Auction raised $1,456 with some very fierce bidding, and three cakes selling for over $170! Many thanks to all our animal judges and indoor judges, and to Rhys Mason, our longstanding auctioneer. The children had fun creating their indoor exhibits and showed knowledge and care with their pets. Congratulations to Bosston, Champion Calf and Matthew, Reserve Champion; Amanda, Champion Lamb, and Jayden, Reserve Champion; Poppy, Champion Pet, and Alex, Reserve Champion; Tayla– Best Exhibit in Show; Nina Kirschbaum, 1 st place for the family cake and the Winiata Family, People’s Choice Cake; Grace, 1 st place and People’s Choice in the Children’s Section. It was lovely to see four generations in one family in attendance on Saturday. Laureen Holdaway has been one of our indoor judges for many years, her daughter (Jeanette and I were on the PTA together at Tararua College about 25 years ago!), Jeanette’s son Brendan and his son Liam Tootell was showing his calf. Special times The Raffle Winners were - $100 note, Amy Hardyment #1; “Celebration” raffle, Jude Tait #88; Jellybean Guess, Ella Rendell, nearest to 255. Congratulations! If you purchased a cake and are still to pay for it, please do so at the office as soon as possible. Hopefully you noticed our two new Tiritea School banners on Saturday. A special thank you to Graphics HQ for designing and donating the banners. They will be fabulous when we go out to sports events, etc. Many thanks to all our sponsors – Totally Vets and Aokautere New World who sponsored all the ribbons; United Video, the Lido and Farmlands for all the spot prizes; Hellers who donated all the delicious sausages. You all helped to make our day a success. THANK YOU FOR YOUR SUPPPORT

CONGRATULATIONS Congratulations to Oscar who is the only student from Tiritea School to be nominated as a finalist for his Book Trailer in the Manawatu Digi Awards. Top effort Oscar The awards will be announced at a ceremony at the Regent Theatre on November 24.

HANDYPERSON WANTED We are once again looking for a “Handyperson” – somebody we can call on from time-to-time to do odd fix-it jobs around the school. If you are that person, or if you know of anybody, please come and see Glenys. There will be remuneration for the work.

COSMODOME On Monday, the Cosmodome from Te Manawa visited Tiritea School. A large globe was inflated in Tane Mahuta and each class had up to 45 minutes lying on their backs as they were transported in an alien space buggy around the planets, with a commentary playing. It was a great learning experience for the children, and we thank Te Manawa for providing this for us at no charge.

ATHLETICS The Fitzherbert Cluster events this year have been changed somewhat to be more “championship” events and not involving whole year groups. This will apply to both the Senior (20 November) and Junior (27 November) Cluster Athletics. We have therefore decided to hold our own Tiritea School Athletics Day at the Massey Track on Wednesday 29 October, involving the whole school. To save getting a bus to travel that short distance, please drop your children at the track instead of at school in the morning, and pick them up from there at the end of the day (we will make arrangements with Kids’ Club for those who attend there after school). The events will start at 9.30am. Children can arrive from 8.30am (NO EARLIER PLEASE) and need to be picked up at 2.45pm. They need to wear suitable clothing and shoes for competing in athletics events, bring morning tea, lunch and plenty to drink, and bring sunscreen (we will take school hats). We’d love parents to come along as spectators and we’ll also be looking for offers of help on the day as well.

BOT NEWS The Board met last week and is busy finalising changes to the Charter as a result of the recent consultation with the wider school community. We will report back soon about the themes that emerged in consultation, some changes, and any other actions they may arise as outcomes of this process. The online survey seemed to work well, and we would like to use this process again for the upcoming consultation (required by the Ministry of Education) on the Health Curriculum. We would like to email you directly with a link to the survey. If you think the office may not have an up-to-date email address and you would like to be contacted this way, please give your details to Julie or Vicki. If you prefer not to be emailed then that’s fine too. We will let you know through the newsletter when paper copies are available at the office. The Board is very pleased that a funding application to line the school pool (which is leaking) has been successful. We will receive $18,000 from the Eastern & Central Community Trust towards this cost and intend to have the work done for this summer. Many thanks to Paul Compton for all his work on the pool and the funding application. As always, if you have any questions please just ask.

Julie Macdonald, for the Board of Trustees
