Mahalakshmi, and other splendors, emerge from the churning of the Milk Ocean

Dear All:

Given below is the link to the Lakshmi dwaadasha (12) nama stotram – a

really short prayer with only twelve (12) names of Lakshmi, the Goddess of

Wealth. The Phalashruti verse (the verse that tells us about the benefits of

chanting) here is very interesting. On December 6, 2011, Sri Suktham and

the Dwadasha nama stotram chanting (108 times each) is scheduled at the

Sri Balaji temple, in Sterling Heights, Michigan.

Sridevi Amrutodbhavaa Kamalaa Lokasundari

Vishnupatni Vaishnavee Varaarohaa Harivallabhaa

ShaarnghiNee Devadevikaa Lakshmi Sriharipriyaa

Slokas number 4 and 5 are the Phalashruthi slokas (benefits of chanting)

By chanting 3 times a day (morning, noon, and evening)

- Long life (aayuh), good health (aarogyam), great wealth (aishwaryam) are

the great merits (punya) that will be bestowed.

Chant for 2 months - success in all endeavors

Chant for 6 months - will even gain a kingdom

Chant for 1 year - Lakshmi Herself will start worshipping that person!

The last sloka is the familiar Lakshmeem ksherasamundra raaja tanayaa

Sridevi being the first naamaa and the second being Amrutodbhavaa l Kamala has been said to be the third and the fourth Lokasundaree ll 1 ll

The fifth is Vishnupatnee and VaishNavi is known to be the sixth l The seventh is Varaarohaa and the eighth Harivallabhaa ll 2 ll

The ninth has been said to ShaarnghiNee and Devadevikaa the tenth l The eleventh however is Lakshmi and the twelveth is Sriharipriyaa ll 3 ll One who chants these twelve names during the three daily conjunctions l Acquires as its merit long life, good health and great wealth ll 4 ll

Chant for two months and succeed in all endeavors,

chant for six and verily gain a kingdom l And do chant for a year and behold,

Lakshmi Herself consider you worthy of Her worship ll

O Lakshmi, Daughter of the king of the milk ocean,

Queen of the holy abode named Srirangam l Unto whom all the celestial damsels have turned themselves into servants,

the Only spark of divine light that beckons the whole Universe ll One who has bestowed with Her graceful look from the corner of Her eyes all

the opulences of Shriman upon Brahma, Indra, and Gangadharaa l I bow to thee, O Beloved of Mukunda, Born of the Divine (Milk) Ocean,

and the Mother of all of the three worlds ll

Appendix 1: Translation of the meaning of Individual names

1. Sridevi: The Goddess (devi) named Sri (denoting all opulences)

2. Amrutodbhavaa: Produced from amrutam (reference to churning of

Milk ocean to produce amrutham, nectar, ambrosia, bestowing immortality).

3. Kamala: One who is seated on a lotus.

4. Lokasundaree: One whose beauty enchants all the worlds.

5. Vishnupatnee: Wife (patni, or patnee) of Vishnu. After She emerged from

the churning of the milk ocean, all the devas (gods) and asuras (demons) and

even all the rishis (sages who live in higher planets) wanted Her for a wife

but She chose Mahavishnu and garlanded Him.

6. VaishNavi: Belonging to Vishnu or to the devotees of Vishnu (Vaishnavas)

7. Varaarohaa: One who can be reached by the best and pious. Aarohanam

means climbing, rising to the top. The devout, pious, and the best of humans

can climb and rise up to Her (reach the level of Vishnu).

8. Harivallabhaa: One who is dear to Lord Sri Hari (another name of Vishnu).

9. ShaarnghiNee: Mahavishnu is referred to as Shaarngha dhanva, which

means One who has the bow named Sharngha (made from hollow bamboo).

Being His consort, Lakshmi becomes ShaarnghiNee.

10. Devadevikaa: The Goddess worshipped by even the gods (devas, celestial

being who live in higher planet, god, with small “g” is not to be confused

with the Supreme Being, God, with capital “G”.)

11. Lakshmi: The well-known name for the Goddess, means One endowed with

all auspicious markings.

12. Sriharipriyaa: The Beloved of Lord Sri Hari

Peetam is considered to be the most powerful of all. The Kashi Khand, chapter

100, describes worship of the nine Gauris with Mahalakshmi being the ninth Gauri.
