Lakeville Enrichment Offerings-Spring Trimester (March 20 to June 2, 2017)

Course Information:

1. Time: 8:05AM to 9:05AM.

2. Courses start the week of March 20th through the week of June 2nd.

3. No class when school is closed.

4. Registration fee: $100 per course, unless otherwise stated in description.

5. March 13th Registration Deadline Date. Each course needs a minimum of ten registrants to run, unless minimum is # otherwise stated.

6. No Refunds after March 13th.

7. Class sizes are limited based on teacher request. Early registration is recommended.

Monday

Title: Student Book Club Teacher: Cynthia James-Manzi Grade(s): 4th - 5th

Day: Monday Fee: $100 Reg. Max: 20 Description: Students will choose a book to read as a group. We will meet to discuss the book and complete related activities.

Tuesday

Title: Chance To Dance! Teacher: Jamie DuVoisin Grade(s): 4th – 5th

Day: Tuesday Fee: $100 Reg. Max: 20 Description: In this Zumba® inspired class, students will be introduced to the fundamentals of dance with songs kids love. This includes warm-up, movement and cool down. Kids dance to music from top charts and from around the world with age appropriate, easy-to-learn dance steps. Fitness classes increase focus, self-confidence and socialization: boost metabolism and improve coordination. Students should wear comfortable clothing and gym shoes.

Title: Chess: Lakeville Knights Teacher: Dale Gindi Grade(s): 3rd - 5th

Day: Tuesday Fee: $100 Reg. Max: 24 Description: This enrichment will provide an opportunity to learn and play chess. It is appropriate for players of all skill levels. Those players new to chess will receive instruction and those familiar with the game will have ample opportunity to hone their skills while playing games with other students.

Title: Flight Teacher: Adam Feinstein Grade(s): 4

Day: Tuesday Fee: $100 Reg. Max: 15 Description: Flight is a fun topic that features many interesting science principles and facts. Students will learn about Bernoulli’s principle, how the aerofoil works and the forces involved in flying. This course will include activities using balloons, paper airplanes, kites, water rockets and culminate in the building of a model rocket. Kids will enjoy the hands on fun while they learn about interesting flight related principles and science facts.

Title: It’s All Greek to Me: An Introduction to Greek Mythology Teacher: Diane Levine Grade(s): 2nd – 4th

Day: Tuesday Fee: $100 Reg. Max: 20 Description: This unit will introduce the students to several well-known Greek myths and many well-known mythical characters. Students will learn that the ancient Greeks worshipped many gods and goddesses, and that the twelve most powerful lived on Mount Olympus. Students will also learn about myths that include supernatural beings or events, and that myths give insight into the ancient Greek culture. **Not recommended for students who were previously enrolled.

Title: Morning Mindfulness Teacher: Kathy Feldman and Linda Zarin Grade(s): 2nd - 3rd

Day: Tuesday Fee: $100 Reg. Max: 40, Min. 20 Description: Normal stress helps develop coping skills that help navigate the challenges faced in daily living, but chronic stress overwhelms and can limit one’s ability to develop and/or apply those healthy coping skills. Students are increasingly experiencing stress from the demands placed on them within the classroom setting and, as a result, find it difficult to be able to reach their potential. Studies show that Mindfulness helps students to better regulate their emotions, attend and engage in lessons, calm their minds and bodies, be more compassionate, and demonstrate improved academic and social outcomes. In the initial class we will be introducing participants to the concept of Mindfulness. We will share how it can benefit them in their lives and facilitate a beginning personal practice of Mindful Meditation. Each week we will introduce a specific concept and facilitate discussions within the group to help them make connections to their own lives. We will use literature and writing to broaden the children’s understanding and encourage their practice outside of this morning enrichment program.

Title: Spanish for Beginners Teacher: Jocelyn Ayende Grade(s): 5th

Day: Tuesday Fee: $100 Reg. Max: 15 Description: This program offers students the fundamentals of the Spanish language. Students will engage in multi-media, hands on learning of the regions of the world that speak the language, the Spanish alphabet, thematic categories of words (foods, animals, places, colors, body parts, etc), and how to say basic greetings, commands, and questions. At the end of this program, students should be able to understand, speak, read, and write some basic Spanish words, phrases, and sentences.

Thursday

Title: A Journey Through Earth – A multimedia approach to learning geography Teacher: Dena Weiner Grade(s): 4th – 5th

Day: Thursday Fee: $100 Reg. Max: 16 Description: This course will be a journey of thought and discovery about our world both above and below the ocean floor. We will be studying and creating maps using paper, clay and online media sources like Google Earth. The course will culminate with a three dimensional map making experience. **Not recommended for students who were previously enrolled.

Title: Scrabble Teacher: Jennifer Pellegrini Grade(s): 4th – 5th

Day: Thursday Fee: $100 Reg. Max: 25 Description: Teach children the rules of Scrabble as well as strategies to maximize points earned. We will keep list of new words learned during each session and post the definitions to share with group. Overall enthusiasm will be generated for the game. It will also be a nice opportunity for children to make new friends.

Title: That’s Debatable! Teacher: Stephanie Bailyn & Jaclyn Sharoni Grade(s): 4th – 5th

Day: Thursday Fee: $100 Reg. Max: 35 Description: During this course, students will learn the art of debate. Based on given topics, they will choose a stance, discover research techniques and learn strategies to create a cohesive argument. Students will also have an opportunity to practice debating with one another. Throughout the duration of the course, students will be able to strengthen these skills using multiple debate topics given to them and ultimately choose their own topics to defend.

Friday

Title: Creative Writing Teacher: Julie Insinga Grade(s): 2nd – 3rd

Day: Friday Fee: $100 Reg. Max: 15 Description: Writing should be an enjoyable, gratifying experience for our young learners, and is an important part of the elementary years of learning. This program will not only guide students to become more proficient and practiced writers, but also foster their artistic expression and stimulate their imagination. Through discovery of both fiction and non-fiction genres, students will have the opportunity to explore their writers voice while partaking in the stages of the writing process. Students will learn how to pre-write, draft, revise, edit, and publish, while writing in a way that allows them to explore the function and value of creative writing!

Title: The Puzzle Place Teacher: Lori Karson Grade(s): 4th – 5th

Day: Friday Fee: $100 Reg. Max: 15 Description: Students will learn problem solving strategies, social skills and teamwork through the art of building and solving puzzles together. This course will provide children with the opportunity to solve and create their own puzzles.

1. Registration deadline is TWO WEEKS prior to start date. 2. 2% transaction fee is applied to all credit card transactions. 3. A $10.00 processing fee will be deducted from any refund requested prior to the

registration deadline. NO REFUNDS after the program registration deadline. 4. In the event of program cancellation due to low enrollment a full refund will be issued. 5. If the district closes operations due to inclement weather or any other reason, enrichment

programs will be cancelled for that day. All reasonable efforts will be made to reschedule cancelled programs.
