We are preparing for our yummy feast on November 18th. The pilgrims and Native Americans will sit together to give thanks. In Science we are learning about the day and night sky and how things move. In Math we just finished learning about comparing numbers and we will now move on to addition. In Writing we are learning about informative writing. We are writing facts about people, places, and things. Continue to read every day and write down the titles on the Reading Across Broward form. Make sure to ask questions when reading. Who are the characters? What is the setting? What happened at the beginning, middle, and end? Have a happy Thanksgiving!
Hello First Grade Family,
The first quarter is behind us and report cards go home on November 17th. We will be farmers on November 21st. Please send in a bag of soil if you can. First Grade will have a Thanksgiving Share on November 22. This is a great day for First graders to get together and be thankful for all we have. I-Ready is available at home. Login at login.i-ready.com Ask your teacher for login info if you need. Homework: Your child has homework each night. Please do 3 spelling activities each week. Be sure you are doing your reading log an signing the agenda every day.
Fall has fallen and Holiday season is on it's way! We have been busy little turkeys here in our rooms, painting, gluing and decorating. We have been learning how to compare objects by looking for the similarities and differences in them. We have been practicing sequencing events and using all those wonderful, colorful, delightful describing words in our everyday conversation. Our upcoming theme is all about our communities and what makes them special. We will also be learning how we can help our community. We have begun practicing for our upcoming Winter Show on December 16th, so please be sure to come and see us, it will be amazing.

Second Grade students this month, had lots of fun creating a vocabulary costumes for their Vocabulary Parade. This event was a great success and their costumes were very creative. Thank you parents for helping with costumes. Some of the Language Arts skills our students learned this month were: main idea/details, prefix/suffix, how characters respond to major events, and how to write a narrative (story) essay. The next standard we will be moving into is compare and contrast. At night ask your child to identify similarities and differences in what they are reading. In Mathematics, second graders wrapped up place value to the hundreds and began our study of addition and subtraction using mental math strategies. Our Science consisted of introducing different forms of energy along with the scientific process. One specific experiment that our students loved was toasting bread. Children observed that the bread changed in color, texture, temperature, and smell. Electricity from the outlet moved through the cord. When the toaster was turned on, the electricity changed to heat, causing the bread to cook. The children gobbled up warm delicious toast!!! Thank you parents for helping your children participate in pantry collection. Our school collected many items for families in need.

News from other corners…
Our fabulous fourth graders are off to a great start as we enter the second quarter. They are working collaboratively in reading centers and using academic rich language and accountable talk. We continue to encourage them to use the i-Ready Math and Reading program daily in an effort to increase academic success.
Writing continues to be an area of focus. Students are learning the important elements of writing which include grammar, mechanics, and spelling. We are also encouraging them to use more elaboration when writing their responses.
Please encourage our Lakeside Gators to study their multiplication and division facts, and to read daily.
Our curriculum for this month entails writing informative essays during Language Arts. In mathematics, students are adding, subtracting, multiplying, and dividing decimals. Our Science lessons this month will encompass climate, the water cycle, and the nature of matter.
Some of the Reading skills we will target this month include compare/contrast, theme, drawing conclusions, and generalizations. We’ve also been working hard on preparing for our visit to JA Biztown.
We will continue to prepare our students for the FSA Exam that will take place towards the end of this school year.
Our students did a wonderful job during the Vocabulary Parade. It was amazing to see how creative the students were with their vocabulary word. We also participated in the Fall Run. The students had a blast!
We hope that you rest up during the break and enjoy your time with your families. On behalf of our Fifth Grade Team, we would like to wish you and your family a warm Thanksgiving Holiday!

Counselor’s Corner Guidance for Gators from Mrs. Ginory
NOVEMBER’S KID OF CHARACTER TRAIT – CITIZENSHIP
All of us live together in a society in which each has various rights and responsibilities. Often we can focus on or “rights” while neglecting our responsibilities. These responsibilities include being
concerned not with what we can get but rather with what we can give to help others. Enclosed are simple ways to integrate the character skill of citizenship in your home.
Citizenship Defined: (1) Being involved in trying to make the world a better place, engaged in big and small ways in helping others. (2) Actions and attitudes which reflect pride in being part of a community; showing
good citizenship means being law-abiding and involved in service to school, community and country. Service Ideas to Do as a Family
• Working on a Current Issue: Find a current issue or problem you are personally concerned about. Discuss this concern with your family and together come up with actions you can
do as a family to address the issue. • Family of Good Citizens: Good citizenship involves doing things that show care for your community.
Have all family members discuss what they do or have done in the past to be good citizens. • Choosing an Issue: As a family, discuss various issues or needs that family members are concerned about. Make a list of the issues and some possible actions your family could take to try to help solve the problem.
As a family, decide on one issue and start working on it! • Volunteer! Visit http://www.volunteermatch.org/ for more information.
Suggested Home Activities for Citizenship: What are our family values as they relate to citizenship? Patriotism?
“If you want to lift yourself up, lift up someone else.” – Booker T. Washington
