    GreenLivingOnBehalf of theEarthGLOBE

The first film in our Earth Day Every Day movie series Blue Gold: World Water Wars was highly informational, welattended, and the popcorn was excellent. One message: Do you know who owns your water? Where does it come from?

Where does it go? And logically-is it being used sustainably? And theres lots more. The DVD is now available in our

    LUUF library.

Our next movie is Gasland, about fracking. Learn how to set your drinking water on fire Friday April 26that 6:30. Its

free and open to the public- and there will be snacks.

GLOBEwill maintain an LUUF presence on Manitowocs Mayoral Committee on Sustainability. Earth Day activities a

Lincoln High School on Saturday April 20th

include music by our own Bev Rawlin, beach cleanup sponsored by theMaritime Museum and Woodland Dunes, earth-friendly collections throughout the city of unwanted medications, cell

phones, mercury thermometers, printer cartridges, glasses and hearing aids, and gently used shoes. Details online atwww.manitowcrecycles.orgor at 920-683-4333.

The next GLOBEmeeting is Wednesday, April 23rdat 3:30. We discussed having meetings on Sundays before or after

services. If that would make it easier for you to attend, let Bev know.

Green Tips are in our Order of Service every Sunday. If you missed them, they follow:

3/3: We live on the shore of one of the greatest bodies of fresh water on earth. We drink it, cook with it, bathe in it. It is

our life source. It is threatened by sewage overflows, overuse by distant suburbs that have used up their own aquifers, business that dumps coal ash into it, legislators that would allow an open pit iron mine to drain into it. With each threat

we have to ask: Are we acting with Respect for the interdependent web of all existence of which we are a part?

3/10: When you see the movie Blue Gold on March 22 youll see that water is an endangered resource. According toNational Geographic the average American uses 2000 gallons of water a day: 50% in our diets (634 gallons to make one

burger, 37 gallons for one cup of coffee;) 30% for energy use (13 gallons to make I gallon of gasoline, 5 gallons per

hour for a 60-watt light bulb;) 10% for the products we use (2900 gallons for a pair of blue jeans, 700 gallons to make a

cotton t-shirt;) 10% at home (cooking, cleaning, washing, drinking.) Our footprint is TWICE the global average.

Some suggestions to conserve are: eat meat once a day instead of twice a day; buy fewer clothes; plant native vegetation

instead of thirsty grasses; turn off lights and TVs when not in use. Hard to believe that here next to so much water thereis a need to conserve-but wereall in this together.

3/17: UNESCO has designated 2013 as International Year of Water Cooperation and next Friday as World Water Day.

We affirm the interdependent web and know that awareness leads to action, so think about this: With global climate

change, increasing population growth and dietary shifts, the water of 3.5 planets Earth will be required for the global

population to live like an average American. Producing 1 kg of rice takes 3500 L of water, 1 kg of beef takes 15,000 L

of water and 1 cup ofcoffee takes 140 L of water. Consume less; conserve more. Were all in this together.

3/24: Be gentle with our water: Dispose of medications you no longer need, or that are out of date, at our regularly

scheduled local drop-offs. There's even one at the Manitowoc Police Dept. Everything from early puberty to inability to

conceive has been linked to drug-contaminated water found in every environment. Do not flush drugs! Dispose of

    properly.

3/31: Spring Cleaning is always lots of fun! If you use a broom to clean out your garage instead of using a gas powered

blower you can get in some good exercise as well as adding less pollution to the air we all breathe. We are in it together

The day-to-day life of our fellowship is the glue that holds our spiritual community together. Unitarian Universalismapproaches the more "secular" aspects of fellowship life with the same religious intent as it's worship. Our religiouseducation classes, adult activities groups, community volunteerism and building facilities committees are essentialaspects of our spiritual work. We believe it is our deeds, not our creeds, which are most important.Volunteer opportunities abound! Please consider signing up for coffee service, greeter, shoveling, or any otheractivity or job that helps to keep our fellowship moving forward and running smoothly.

Volunteer sign up sheets are in the coat roomThanks for all your help!

IMPORTANT LUUF PROJECTS CONTINUE -- PLEASE HELP!

ALL I WANT FOR THE NEW YEAR (and beyond.........)is LUUF mementos and keepsakes by Ginney Finnel

During one of his recent visits to our fellowship, Arthur Thexton suggested we add to our October "Remember theSaints" service a ceremonial reading aloud of the names of the departed members and friends of our fellowship. Th

year we paid homage to Vince Holschbach, Katherine Helgeland and George Edwards, who left us far too soon. Walso remembered past members and friends, including Shirley Goeters, Bob Potrykus, Olga Radulaski, WinnifreSpring, and others.

In a further effort to preserve the personal history of our fellowship, Zoe Alexander and I have a plan tcreate and assemble a photo album / scrap book of LUUF memorabilia. We want to preserve our connection to thpeople no longer with us as well as to meaningful events and happenings related to the life of our fellowship and ithistory and mission here in Manitowoc.

So, please, help us by sharing copies of anything you may have in your possession that will further this cause. Thinglike:

    Photos of departed members and friends;

    Photos of special events (new member recognitions, moving day(s), concerts, picnics and parties;

    Photos taken at our former homes - Washington House in Two Rivers and our building on 8th Street Manitowoc;

Newspaper articles about the fellowship or fellowship events, obituaries, etc.

Please contact Ginny Finnel by phone 755-2689 or email at [email protected] if you have questions oanything to contribute now or at anytime in the future. Or, simply leave your items in an envelope with my name oit on the information table at the back of the fellowship. I will be happy to photocopy and return any original itemyou wish to retain. Thank you!

"A person with no sense of the past is a person who is a stranger to his or her own roots...We are inheritors of the history that ha

made us what we are..." -Anthony O'Hear.

"The poetry of history lies in the quasi-miraculous fact that once...on this familiar spot of ground, walked other men and women, a

actual as we are today...". - G.M. Trevelyan

"Of all the intellectual pursuits, history is the most supremely useful. That is why people crave it and need ever more of it."

A call out to LUUF Artists, Poets, Sculptors & Fine Craftsman. Last May we started a call out to our LUUF artists andwe're still encouraging our talented members and friends, to provide art for our fellowship. Bonita's paintings haveadorned the walls at LUUF for 3 years, and with the many talented artists in our congregation, it's time to for achange and for your talents to shine and adorn our Fellowship, as we enter our fourth year in this historic building.

We're calling out to all our talented artists, poets, sculptors and potters to share their artistic talents, so we can allenjoy the variety of these beautiful works of art. We will also need outdoor art for our gardens.

Please contact Kim Everett to arrange for art rotation and display -- 755-8430, or email at: [email protected]

    GAME NIGHT!

Our monthly Board Game Night continues Wednesday, March 10, at 6:30. 15 people came lastmonth and enjoyed laughing together. Bring your favorite game and snack or join in with whatothers bring. There will be plenty of laughs, games, and snacks to share.

**********************************************************************************************************************Don't forget meditation on Sunday evenings at LUUF at 6:30

    Relax, reflect and realign

For a calming start to you week.

The goal of meditation is to bring inner peace within oneself and the world in a positive and spiritual way.The world may not always be a peaceful place and within every soul there is some form of tension and stress.

It is therefore essential to create positive and peaceful thoughts to bring peace to our mind.Meditation is one of the best methods to bring about transformation and nurture the natural qualities within.

"Peace is not always the absence of conflict, but the ability to cope with it"

Would you enjoy a casual gathering around a meal, for eight (8) members or friends? "Circle Suppers" are awonderful activity we are adopting from other UU fellowships. These dinners are simple and fun--a potluck aa host's home, or a gathering at a restaurant--and are a great way to get better acquainted with Fellowshipfriends. We are looking for gracious hosts and eager participants for three (3) Circle Suppers to be held inMay.

We'd like to hold the Circle Suppers between May 1-18. With hosts and dates, we'll post sign-up sheets April14 & 21 in the vestibule for participants, who should pick just one dinner to attend. If these go well, we willhold more Circle Suppers in the future!

We have one host but need two more. The role of the host is to select a date, then to coordinate a potluck iyour home, or to select a restaurant and make a reservation. You also communicate arrangements with youparticipants by email or phone. If you are interested in being a host, please contact Jean Biegun [email protected]. The role of participants is to bring a dish (if a potluck) or pay for your own meal (if a

    restaurant).

Join the fun and fellowship at our spring "Circle Suppers"!

RUTH (Responding with Understanding, Truth, and Hope)

RUTH is a justice organization in Manitowoc county composed of representatives of FirstLutheran Church, St. James Episcopal Church, Lakeshore Methodist Church, the friends of FoxValley (Quakers), and Pax Christi.

We seek to bring together people and communities of faith to work through peaceful means andcompassionate hearts, to bring about justice in our society.

We work in collaboration with community partners and public officials to identify and act onissues of poverty, oppression, injustice, and stewardship of the earth.

We are affiliated with , a state network of seventeen other faith-based justiceorganizations. Along with these state wide organizations, we are currently focused on the11X15 project. http://prayforjusticeinwi.org/ This is an effort to reduce the prisonpopulation to 11,000 by 2015. Research shows that 40% of our people in prison are non-violentoffenders and there because of mental health or drug related issues. The goal of the 11X15project is to establish treatment for these people rather than incarceration.Other local areas we are working on at this time are immigration, environment, anddevelopment of a clergy caucus.

In Wisconsin, we know we have too many people in our prisons and we know the solution. We know that

Treatment Alternatives and Diversions (TAD) work. They are cheaper and more effective, than jail and

prison time for low-risk offenders. NEXT STEPS include testimony at the Joint Committee on Finance

public hearings. The hearing schedule is as follows (all hearings begin at 10:00 am):

April 4 at Greendale High School

April 8 at Lambeau Field, Green Bay

April 10 at the Chrystal Grand Music Theater, Lake Delton

April 18 at Baldwin-Woodville High School, St. Croix County
