Q:Why does the Wind seem to die doWn
at night?
A: The simple and quick answer is that theres no sun, says Brent McRoberts of Texas A&M University. Wind is
a form of energy and it gets much of its strength fromthe sun, he explains. You can think of wind as a hugeriver of air over land, and it does this day or night. Butas the sun rises and starts heating up the ground, risingwarm air mixes with slower air near the ground andwith air moving faster that is above ground. This faster-moving air is pushing downward, and it creates windyand breezy conditions as the day progresses.
Q: so What happens at night?
A: When the sun starts to set, this mixing of conditionsdoesnt happen as much, so the winds start to slow andeventually die down. Remember that hot or warmer
air expands and rises, McRoberts adds. At night, theground begins to cool. Air closer to the ground coolsby radiation, so there is a lack of heat and energy andthese directly affect air currents. So the winds at nightand in the early morning hours are usually the weakest. But remember that cold fronts and storms can occurand these directly affect wind speed, too.

WHEN TO HOLDEM AND
WHEN TO FOLDEMby Pro Guide, Joe Joslin
Hello, Anglers. Weather and shing big bodies o water are
strongly connected. There are times when it is just stupid to be
on the lake. I you have read my columns with any requency you
know that I seldom make those kinds o statements. However,
having just witnessed a couple o guys who put their lives at risk
or no apparent reason makes you wonder what some people arethinking i they are thinking at all. Recently, I was talking to my
clients at the boat launch at dawn ollowing the passage o a very
strong mid-spring cold ront the night prior. I had already decided
that we either would nd another boat launch in a more protected
area or cancel the shing day completely.
Beore I made a nal decision, I drove out on a point
overlooking the lake and witnessed huge (4-5 oot swells) waves
with winds so strong it was rocking my heavy Tundra. Since my
clients were rom the local area, we decided to cancel the trip and
reschedule. Now, back to the two guys. By this time it is ater 7 a.m.
and no one has launched at the ramp which is located just oHighway 255 on the Texas side o the dam. This is a good, 3-lane
public boat launch but it is very exposed to strong north winds.
Several shermen drove to the boat launch area that morning but
did not launch and drove o. However, two guys in a mid-sized
bass boat did launch. It was so windy that the wave action had the
entire cove area muddy and even in the cove the boat driver was
having trouble maneuvering the boat in order to pick up partner
who parked the truck.
They motored out toward the open lake but then turned around
and came back so I assumed they were going to do the wise thing
and put their boat back on the trailer. Soon ater this I let thelaunch and headed back to the lake house which is located a ew
minutes rom the launch. I then received a call rom one o my
clients who had been sitting on the look-out point watching the
rolling swells. They told me that the same two guys did actually
try to head north up the boat lane beore realizing that they were
over-extended....to say the least. My clients reported that the swells
were so large that the guys boat would almost disappear betweenswells. The shermen then tried to turn the boat around which in
such big waves, is not an easy procedure and their boat did appear
to take on water, according to our clients. However, the good news
is that they did make it back into the cove. Another huge lack
o judgment was even in those conditions, neither had on a lie
jacket. Simply unbelievable!
I you sh a large body o water on a regular basis, sooner
or later you will nd yoursel in a situation that is much more
dangerous than anticipated. Part o that is due to the act that
winds on the lake are usually 5 to 10 mph more than over a land
mass so it is easy to under-estimate the impact o winds on thelarger lakes such as Toledo and Sam Rayburn. Also, as one who
spends a lot o time outside, I have observed that weather sources
oten miss the orecast o wind velocity as these are dicult to
orecast especially winds on our lakes. It is also important to
know your boating abilities and the limitations o your boat being
careul not to exceed either.
In turbulent water conditions, it is important to keep the boats
bow (ront) up and some boats have more bow lit than others.
Several o the major boat companies oer boats with excellent
bow lit and my Skeeter 21 FX is certainly one o those. This aids in
minimizing the spearing o oncoming waves since the ront o
the boat is up and on top o the wave. So it really comes down
to staying on the side o caution while using your experience and
common sense. Three other actors to consider that will push the
odds in your avor i you do nd yoursel in more rough water
than you bargained or:
The rst is a no-brainer...always wear a good lie jacket whenmain motor is operating. Over 80% o drowning victims were not
wearing a lie jacket. The second is to make sure your boat has
two....yes...two bilge pumps with one being an auto unit where it is
activated when the foat is submerged and the other is a manually
operated unit. Buy large units such as a 1500 gph (gallons per
hour) on the auto and at least a 750 gph on the manual.
Two units will bilge the unwanted water out quicker plus i
one ails you will still have one working. I my bilge pumps are
not working, I do not launch my boat. It is that vital in my way o
thinking. The nal is to not under-power your boat with an engine
that is smaller than the maximum rated horse power. A smallerengine might be ne in ideal conditions but i you get in rough
water and take on a wave that suddenly adds several hundred
pounds o weight to your rig then you are dead in the water with
the smaller engine struggling to keep the boat on top o the rough
seas. Whereas, a larger engine could help keep the boat on top o
the waves until bilge pumps have time to dump some water.
Hopeully, these reminders will help keep you as well as your
amily and riends saer on the water.
God bless and good fshing.

The top water bite will be early inthe morning and late in the aternoon.Break out the Yellow Magic and Ribbitbaits to start with. The lily pads andsome o the grass will be breaking thesurace making or some great shingas the sh get into the summer pattern. This is a time that you get to watch yourbait as you work it across the surace othe water waiting or that Big Ol Bassto come up and clobber it! Its the mostexciting time o the year or some. Thewacky worms and senkos will catch a loto sh in the shallows around the grassand pads or olks that love to work thebait slowly. As the grass continues togrow, working the edges with a Stanley
spinner bait then letting it drop o intothe deeper water can put sh in the boatand cover a lot o water. Chunking acrankbait o points and creek ledges is agood way to pick up some nice sh. Somesh will slide o to deeper water and set
up o points and humps. That can be awhole lot o un and a chance to use lotso dierent baits, rom a crankbait to jigsand or a Carolina rig.
Dont overlook the Stanley Footballjigs around some o the ledges andcreek channels. Theres one thing thatyou really need to look at when workingthis kind o bait, thats the rod youreusing. I you dont eel the bite, yourenot going to set the hook. That soundssimple. The bite can get so light that youwont eel her pickup the bait. A big shis like a big vacuum, it can suck a ozjig o the bottom o the lake and youcan hardly eel it. What most people eelis the sh spiting it out and you eel it
as it drops to the bottom. Bottom line isdont cut yoursel short here, a good rodand sensitive line is a must. The TeamSeries Rod rom American Rodsmithsis one that will get the job done. Theserods have the sensitivity that you need
to eel these light bites. Remember thesebites can be very light and the sh willnot hold on long. When you rst eel thatlittle tap youve got to set the hook, dontwait to eel the weight. This will changesome so you have to be on your toes tokeep up.
The Crappie are starting to setup onthe brush piles and can be a lot o un orall. Remember to be careul when shingthe brushpiles dont drop your anchorin the pile so you wont tear it up whenyou pull your anchor up. The pontoonhas been doing great with lots o roomand un or everyone. Gather up yourshing buddies and give me a call to getyour trip booked or the summer.
I hope everyone has a great time outthere and please be sae on the water.God Bless!
Top Water action on Sam Rayburn! The bass have spawned and are noweeding again and setting up or the
summer. Lots o the sh here on SamRayburn never leave the bank, and oranglers that dont sh here a lot thatis kind o hard to believe. But, it is thetruth! With all the fooded hay grass, pepper grass and hydrilla there is noreason or the bass to leave all that goodcover that is rich with bait. With thatbeing said there are sh that live onmain lake points and ridges that have nograss and no timber. But these sh eedon shad and the shad are always on the
move and that puts the bass on the movelooking or them.
Lets start o by talking about theshallow sh, and baits that will work orthem. Yellow Magic, Pop R, Strike KingSpittin King, and V&M buzz baits are allgood baits to start with on the edge o thefooded hay grass and on the edge o thehydrilla. Occasionally, there will be holesback behind the hydrilla and hay grass, and when you nd one, that is when itstime to pick up your V&M buzz rog orStrike King KVD hollow belly and startworking it in and around the hole.
