The purpose of the meeting was to explore the concept of creating a “Lake County Car Clubs” website. Each participating Club would be afforded the option to post any of their up-coming events on the “Lake County Car Clubs” website. The website would enable anyone Googling “Lake County Car Clubs” to find information about each participating club. Further, the “Lake County Car Clubs” website will have a link to each participating Club’s individual website. We would need two things to occur so that we can participate in this venture. One, we would need to develop our own website. Two, we would need to have a member volunteer to become our Webmaster. Our Club decided at our March meeting that we are interested in the concept and to move forward on this project. Margaret Ward has volunteered to be our Webmaster. Therefore, the project is moving forward. The Lake County Car Clubs have members who are very adept in website creation. They have offered to build a website for us at no cost. The only costs associated with this project are the purchase of a domain name for around $30 per year and perhaps sharing in the domain name costs of the Lake County Car Clubs website. The group is currently mocking up a website for us. I have sent them our membership application, directions to the MAFCA website for the MAFCA membership application, a short blurb about who we are, and our Club’s Logo. All of the foregoing will be included in the mock up of our website. The “Lake County Car Clubs” website and our website will provide any interested party the ability to find and join our Club. We will have total control of what we post on our website and the “Lake County Car Clubs” website. It is necessary to keep our website as simple as possible to ensure its continued viability. We will continue to use each member’s email as our primary means of communication. I will keep you informed as to the progress of this project. The second item brought to the February Presidents meeting was an up-coming Lake County Car Clubs’ car show. Our Club was invited to participate. The car show will be held at the Twin Pines Casino on April 16 th and 17 th . Saturday night will feature a dinner-dance. The Casino will have room rates for this event. Any interested member should contact me for further information. That’s all for now, Dick Munger

1920’s - The Radio

Guglielmo Marconi had conducted the first successful experiments with radio in 1895. But only during World War I did developed countries fully begin to exploit the advantages of wireless communication. The world’s first commercial radio station, KDKA in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, began broadcasting in 1920. Within a few years, almost every major city in the United States was broadcasting news, plays, music and sporting events. After World War I, research and development propelled the United States and other industrial countries into the age of modern technology. Advances in transportation, communication, and manufacturing allowed middle-class consumers to buy cars, radios, and home appliances, which they saw advertised in magazines and newspapers. In their leisure time, people crowded into palatial movie theaters to gaze at films featuring their favorite stars. Near the end of the decade, the Great Depression would cause consumer spending to drop precipitously. It would not return to its 1920s levels until the economic boom following World War II.

When radio was introduced in the 1920s many predicted the end of records. Radio was a free medium for the public to hear music for which they would normally pay. While some companies saw radio as a new avenue for promotion, others feared it would cut into profits from record sales and live performances. Many companies had their major stars sign agreements that they would not appear on radio.

1960’s - The Internet

The Internet has revolutionized the computer and communications world like nothing before. The invention of the telegraph, telephone, radio, and computer set the stage for this unprecedented integration of capabilities. The Internet is at once a world-wide broadcasting capability, a mechanism for information dissemination, and a medium for collaboration and interaction between individuals and their computers without regard for geographic location. The Internet represents one of the most successful examples of the benefits of sustained investment and commitment to research and development of information infrastructure. Beginning with the early research in packet switching, the government, industry and academia have been partners in evolving and deploying this exciting new technology. Today, terms like "[email protected]" and "http://www.acm.org" trip lightly off the tongue of the random person on the street.

The first recorded description of the social interactions that could be enabled through networking was a series of memos written by J.C.R. Licklider of MIT in August 1962 discussing his "Galactic Network" concept. He envisioned a globally interconnected set of computers through which everyone could quickly access data and programs from any site. In spirit, the concept was very much like the Internet of today. Licklider was the first head of the computer research program at DARPA,4 starting in October 1962. While at DARPA he convinced his successors at DARPA, Ivan Sutherland, Bob Taylor, and MIT researcher Lawrence G. Roberts, of the importance of this networking concept.
