!ST GRADE FIRFIGHTER VISIT

OCTOBER IS ANTI BULLYING MONTH Our ongoing campaign is to educate Lake Street stu-dents on the power of upstanders vs bystand-ers. When a bully picks on a target, an invisible line forms on the ground in between them. As bystanders approach, they tend to stand on the bully’s side of the invisible line. It feels safer to stand next to the bully instead of standing next to the target. The problem is that each time a bystander arrives and stands on the bully’s side of the line, the power of the bully increas-es. If we teach upstanders to stand on the side of the

target, the power of the bully begins to decrease. Below are three facts you may not be aware of which are provided by secondSTEP, our curriculum for anti-bullying:

1. Students who bully are often popular and report seeing themselves

in a positive light.

2. Bullying is not a normal part of childhood that toughens its victims

and builds character. Rather, targets of bullying suffer increased vulnera-bilities and are at risk of withdrawing into depression.

3. The majority of bullying incidents involve more than two people.

Some kids assist bullying behavior or reinforce it by showing approval, and others simply allow it by doing nothing. (Bystanders)
