New Environment of Resource Sharing

Developments in publishing and scholarly biomedical communication are challenging the legacy model of interlibrary loan (traditional library-to-library shipping and receiving)

Publishing world: rise of e-books and e-journals; embargo periods for e-journal content; restrictive (or vague) licenses for e-resources

Scholarly communication: rapid appearance of citations in literature databases, rise of open access movement, NIH mandate; recent (February 2013) White House memorandum on expanding public access to federally funded research

A Curious Feature of This Moment: Decline in Demand

The National Library of Medicine reports a consistent decline in the number of Docline requests since the peak year of 2002

Reasons?

Some Trends to Anticipate

Increase in (relative) amount of freely-available literature in PMC and elsewhere

Rise in pay-per-view model for document delivery fulfillment

Rise in patron-driven acquisition

Tips to Avoid Overlooking Free Content

Be aware that not all free content is identified as such in Pubmed (two categories: international medical journals, health policy literature)

Be aware of freely available theses and dissertations in institutional repositories

Familiarize yourself with large-scale digital libraries of freely-available scanned books and journals (Internet Archive, HathiTrust Digital Library, Medical Heritage Library, Biodiversity Heritage Library)
