Old-fashioned rural characterlives in harmony with progressand growth in LaGrange

County. In fact, “LaGrange” is Frenchfor “The Farm,” a place where oldand new ideas tend to meet. Locatedin northeastern Indiana, LaGrangeCounty is home to the third largestAmish community in the UnitedStates. Approximately 43 percent ofthe county’s population is Amish.

Residents and visitors enjoy theidyllic farmland, 67 lakes and tree-shaded neighborhoods scatteredthroughout the county. The county ismade up of 11 small towns and unin-corporated villages with populationsranging from 525 to 3,000 citizens. LaGrange, located in the heart ofthe county, is the county seat. It isalso home to some of the county’s ar-chitectural jewels including thecounty courthouse, completed in1879, and the city’s Carnegie Library,built in 1919, which recently under-went a 4 million dollar remodel. Shipshewana, located in the west-ern half of the county, is home to theShipshewana Flea Market and Auc-tion, which attracts visitors from allover during the summer months asdo numerous specialty and craftshops throughout the year.

Topeka, just a few miles south ofShipshewana, is known around theworld for its Draft horse auctions.The town also boasts a growing in-dustrial base while being home tomany of the Amish traditions.

Wolcottville, along the southern border of the county, offers a central business and shopping district foryear-round and summer residents liv-ing on the nearby lakes.

Howe, just to the north, is sur-rounded by lakes and forest pre-serves. This unincorporated village isalso home to Howe Military Acad-emy, which opened in 1884.

The other unincorporated townsof Ontario, Brighton, Mongo, Stroh,and South Milford, offer peacefulroads, parks and vistas, which are en-joyed by residents and visitors alike.

Once home to the Potawatomi Indians, LaGrange County saw itsfirst white settlers in the early 1830s, as folks came from the eastto establish communities in this Midwestern wilderness. It has

continued to grow ever since, attracting modern-day pioneers with itsbeautifully preserved landscape and natural areas. Shipshewana, named for Potawatomi chief, Shipshewana, is said tohave welcomed the first white settler in 1831. The first recorded landcertificate was issued in 1835 and by 1844 a group of Amish settlersfrom Pennsylvania called this area home. By 1854, German Baptist andMennonite churches were built. Shipshewana was first platted in 1889and officially incorporated in 1916.

In 1832, two French traders arrived in Wolcottville and soon a logcabin, a dam and sawmill, a general store and gristmill were built, mak-ing Wolcottville one of the area’s first settlements. George Wolcott,who arrived in 1837, was responsible for starting a number of the busi-nesses that served settlers’ needs; the town was named after him in1848. First settled in 1832, Topeka was officially named in 1893. Previ-ously called Haw Patch and Slabtown, Topeka is said to have beennamed by Kansas railroad workers who constructed the tracks for theWabash Railroad in 1891. Sycamore Hall, home to the Sycamore Liter-ary Society, was built in Topeka and dedicated in 1905. Plans for LaGrange, platted in 1836 by Rueben J. Dawson, William F.Beavers, George F. Whittaker, and James McConnell, included a publicsquare, which is now home to the LaGrange County Seat. Due to La-Grange’s central location, the county seat was moved from Lima (nowHowe) to the city of LaGrange in 1843. Howe, the former county seat, was settled in 1834 and became thefirst formalized white settlement in the county. First called Mongo-quinong, the town later was called Lima and then changed to Howe,after John B. Howe, one of the founders of the community’s first bank.Howe’s mansion is located on West Union Street and is used as the rec-tory and administration building for Howe Military Academy. Remnants of the area’s old historic past remain. Brighton is home tothe 150-year-old English Prairie Church of the Brethren and remainsone of the area’s first one-room schoolhouses. Mongo boasts The OldStore, a Greek revival style building, which continues to stand today.

Originally settled as farming villages, Mongo, Stroh and South Mil-ford remain active as residents and visitors take advantage of the lakesand rivers surrounding the communities.

Schools in LaGrange County offer small teacher-to-studentratios in the classrooms as well as curriculum to preparestudents for their post-high school years.

From elementary school to high school, regardless if a stu-dent is taking college prep or vocational training courses, eachstudent receives a well-rounded education in the classroom andfrom extra-curricular activities. There are three public school corporations in the county.Westview School Corporation, located in Emma, oversees threeelementary schools. Elementary students in Shipshewana at-tend Shipshewana-Scott Elementary School. Children in Topekaattend Topeka Elementary School. Students located betweenTopeka and Shipshewana attend Meadowview Elementary. Allthree elementary school graduates move on to Westview Ele-mentary School for fifth and sixth grade, after which they at-tend Westview Junior/Senior High School. Lakeland School Corporation, based in LaGrange, consists ofthree elementary schools, Parkside, Wolcott-Mills and Lima-Brighton. Children then move to Lakeland Middle School fol-lowed by Lakeland High School, Lakeland’s “Leading EDGE”new Tech High School. The eastern third of the county is served by Prairie HeightsSchool Corporation. Of special note is Milford ElementarySchool, with its outdoor classroom at Pretty Lake. The maincomplex includes Prairie Heights Elementary, Middle Schooland High School. Prairie Heights offers an outstanding Voca-tional Agriculture and Building Trades curriculum.

Students may also attend Howe Military Academy, a board-ing school serving youth in 5th-12th grades. The school is co-ed, based on college prep courses and uses JROTC guidelinesensuring a rigorous curriculum and strong school community.Students at Howe play sports and participate in other school ac-tivities while working their way through the ranks of CadetCorps. Part of the Episcopal Diocese, students at Howe attendchapel four evenings a week in addition to a full Sunday serv-ice. Howe Military Academy also boasts a 97 percent college ac-ceptance rate.

Higher education is just a short drive away. The University ofNotre Dame, Trine University, University of St. Francis, regionalcampuses of Indiana and Purdue Universities, a regional cam-pus of Indiana Wes-leyan University, a regional campus of Tay-lor University, Ivy Tech State College, Glen Oaks CommunityCollege, Goshen College and the Freedom Academy are allwithin an hour’s drive from LaGrange County.

Amish children typically attend Amish run schools in theirarea or attend public schools until eighth-grade. Some Amishstudents continue through high school depending on the direc-tion of the local deacon or bishop. The LaGrange County Library, which recently was com-pletely remodeled, serves more than 30,000 patrons. In addi-tion to its main building, a Carnegie Library located indowntown LaGrange, the library has branches in Topeka andShipshewana. A mobile library serves the outlying areas. Knowledgeable staff offers programs for both adults and

children that provide assistance with research projects as wellas keep the shelves stocked with up-to-date materials. The library bookmobile serves rural patrons as well as thosewho live in town, making books and materials available to allcounty residents.

GovernmentLaGrange County’s government consists of three county commis-

sioners and a county council made up of seven elected members.The county commissioners meet twice a month to address

county business. The council meets once a month. Shipshewana is governed by a five-member town council, which

meets twice a month in public meetings. A town manager handlesthe day-to-day business of the town. A town marshal oversees lawenforcement. There is also a volunteer fire department and waterand sewer department.

Topeka has a three-member council, which meets twice a month, anda town manager. Other government services include a police departmentcomprised of a town marshal, a full-time deputy and three reserve officers.The town also has a water and sewer department, garbage pick-up, volun-teer fire department with a full-time paramedic and six volunteer EMSmedics. LaGrange has a five-member town council. Government services in-clude water and sewer department, a volunteer fire department and a po-lice force made up of four full-time officers and several reserve officers. Wolcottville has a three-member town council, which meets once amonth. Government services include water and sewer, a town marshaland volunteer fire department. The LaGrange County Sheriff’s Department serves all areas of thecounty. Many of the unincorporated towns offer volunteer fire services.

Parks & RecreationLaGrange County, along with its towns and communi-

ties, offers a tremendous variety of outdoor sports andrecreation opportunities.

Town Park in LaGrange offers a playground, softball dia-mond, skateboarding, basketball and tennis courts. In Ship-shewana, kids are kept busy at Wolfe Park with modernplayground equipment, including a large wooden train anda couple of basketball courts. Topeka offers three parks, EastPark, West Park and Little League Park, which offer every-thing from picnic pavilions and playgrounds to hikingpaths and ponds. Taylor Square in Wolcottville provides aplayground, basketball courts and a ball diamond. WolcottPark located on SR 9 offers a nature walk and sledding inthe wintertime. Martin Park located behind Taylor Park of-fers 3 baseball/softball diamonds and a football field. The unincorporated communities in LaGrange Countyalso take pride in their parks and playgrounds. A park, com-plete with a playground and picnic areas, is located in theheart of Howe, at the town square. Ontario, Mongo, Strohand South Milford also have excellent parks and play-grounds conveniently located in their communities. LaGrange County Department of Parks and Recreationencompasses 570 acres of land.• Dallas Lake Park includes 140 acres on the south shore ofDallas Lake, wetland, and open lawn areas. A public beachis the largest attraction with lifeguards on duty during thesummer months. Enjoy an observation deck for wildlifeand bird watching. A lodge with modern amenities is avail-able for group meetings.• Delt Church Park is bordered by the Little Elkhart Riverand contains 119 acres with three picnic pavilions availablefor group reservation. On one side of a grass playing field isthe Mega Tower Playground, a handicapped accessible facil-ity and zones divided for 2-5 years and 5-12 years of age.Throughout the park is a Frisbee golf course. There arewooded hiking trails and restored prairie. Picnic tables andgrills are provided.• Maple Wood Nature Center provides a variety of environ-mental and nature related programs at the 131-acre woodedproperty. There are miles of hiking trails and excellent habi-tat for wildflowers, birds and trees. The third weekend ofMarch, see maple syrup made by touring the 500-tap work-ing sugar camp. There is also a pancake meal served all day.• David Rogers Park is most notable for its authentic pio-neer log homes relocated to the park. It also is the gravesiteand memorial to pioneer philanthropist, Dr. David Rogers.David Rogers Country Fair Pioneer Living History Festival isthe fourth Saturday of August, celebrating the work andplay of 1845.• Pine Knob Park offers 99 acres of oaks, pines and softmaples, high quality marsh and Meteer Lake. Many out-door recreational activities including a 3-D archery trailwith life-sized game targets, trails and fishing dock. There isa $5.00 fee for the 3-D trail. Picnic tables and grills are pro-vided and a program center is available for rental.• Scott Mill Park boasts a pedestrian bridge over the PigeonRiver to a 100-acre island.

P igeon River Fish and Wildlife Area was established in 1956when three impoundments in the Pigeon River Valley wereacquired by the State of Indiana. These included Mongo,

Nasby and Ontario reservoirs. Since then the state has acquiredadditional land along the river valley. Currently the propertycovers over 12,600 acres. Most revenue used in land acquisition, development, opera-tion and maintenance of Pigeon River Fish and Wildlife Area isderived from the sale of hunting, fishing and trapping licenses.Funds are also received from the federal Pittman-Robertson andDingell-Johnson programs to aid fish and wildlife restoration.These funds are derived from taxes levied on sport hunting andfishing equipment. Indiana hunters and fishermen are proud toprovide this property for the enjoyment of all people. Although hunting, fishing, shooting and trapping are the pri-mary use for the Pigeon River Fish & Wildlife Area, camping,wildlife watching, nature study, nut, berry and mushroom pick-ing are some of the secondary uses of the property available toall.

Hunting• Hunting for furbearers, deer, quail, rabbit, squirrel, waterfowl,dove, pheasant and wild turkey is common at Pigeon River Fish& Wildlife Area.• Daily check-in is required. All hunting seasons and bag limitsapply. • Special hunts include youth waterfowl, daily waterfowl draw-ings, drawings for turkey hunting and put-and-take pheasanthunts.• Hunting areas available for disabled.• Area D is designated for dog training.• Wetland trapping available. Target Ranges• Target ranges are open to the public on a first come, first servebasis. All shooters must obey range rules and regulations.• Range is open April - Aug., 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. andSept. - March, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., except during waterfowl season, when range hours are restricted from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.• The range is closed on Mondays.

Traffic• Traffic on public roads through the area is governed bystate and county laws. Traffic over service roads and trails,except by authorized vehicles, is restricted to walking.Parking allowed in designated parking lots only.

Wildlife Watching • Pigeon River Fish and Wildlife Area provides excellent water-fowl watching.

Additional Opportunities • Seasonal nuts, mushrooms and berries may be gathered fromthe property. During spring turkey season mushroom hunting isallowed only after 1 p.m. daily.

Tourism & FestivalsT here’s always something happening in LaGrange

County. Festivals and special events are held through-out the year. In the spring there’s the Maple Syrup Fes-

tival at Maple Wood Nature Center and the ShipshewanaMayfest, a family celebration with food, parades and music. During the summer months, there are free concerts inHowe’s Town Park, Topeka’s parks and the LaGrange Court-house gazebo. 4th of July Festivals are held in Topeka, La-Grange, Stroh and Wolcottville. May-August bring the Shipshewana Antique Markets. Me-morial Day, 4th of July and Labor Day are extended fleamarket days. The LaGrange County 4-H Fair, held at the LaGrangeCounty Fairgrounds, packs in 4-H’ers and visitors during thefirst part of July. During the month of August you will findthe Gas and Steam Engine Show as well as the Annual Habi-tat for Humanity Auction. In October, LaGrange hosts Corn School, featuring a five-day street fair, parades and family fun. During November and December, towns throughout thecounty welcome the holidays with a variety of open houses,Santa’s arrival and live Nativities. Quilt shows, craft fairs,church suppers, pancake breakfasts and other events spon-sored by local church groups and civic organizations roundout the year.

There’s more to do in LaGrange County. The Shipshe-wana Flea Market, antique shopping and Pigeon River Fishand Wildlife Preserve provide tourists with a wide array ofshopping and recreation. The numerous lakes offer some ofthe best fishing in the state. The LaGrange County VisitorsBureau offers Geo-Caching which is a year-round activitythat is fun for the whole family! A high-tech treasure huntthat uses a handheld GPS (Global Positioning System) tohelp you find caches containing unique items. The BarnQuilt Tour is another way to see treasures in our county.
