TUNNELBoth one-lane tunnels by Arzviller are crossed in alternating traffic. The lights must be carefully observed.

On red: tie up and waitOn green: entry clear

The lights are operated by a monitoring service which controls the traffic by means of a camera.

The tunnels are designed according to the “Freycinet gauge”Max. boat depth: 1.80 mTotal height: 3.60 mWidth: 5.60 mDepth: 2.20 m

Maximum permitted speed: 8 km/h

Minimum distance to boat in front: 50 m

In the event of an emergency in the tunnel– Use the intercom system – mobile phones don't work in the tunnel. – There is an emergency telephone in the middle of the Arzviller tunnel.

It is marked with a light. – If an accident or emergency should happen in the tunnel, if possible drive the boat out of the

tunnel and stop shortly afterwards.– In the event of fire, leave the boat and tunnel on foot and use the handrail along the walls to

hold on. Hold on tight to the handrail along the wall. Escape the smoke in the opposite direc-tion to the way the wind is blowing.

Page 7: LAGARDE/ ALSACE-LORRAINE · ALSACE-LORRAINE Emergency number of the houseboat base in Lagarde in the following cases: – accident – damage to the boat – mechanical problems on

The following activities are not allowed– Stopping in the tunnel, except in an emergency or special circumstances.– Tethering the boat to signs, trees, handrails, metal signs or similar. – Transporting more people on board the boat than permitted.– Navigating the tunnel at the same time as a vessel transporting dangerous goods.– Entering the tunnel on a red light, even when the waiting times are longer.

Safety precautions– Make sure that all passengers on deck wear life jackets.– Check that there is a working fire extinguisher on board.– Navigate in a way that produces as little exhaust fumes as possible.– Protect the boat and the quay walls with fenders.– Adjust your speed that the boat doesn't create waves that hit the quay walls. – Follow the instructions of the canal authorities.– The captain of the boat must be at least 16 years old and be monitored by somebody hold-

ing a navigation certificate.– Turn on the navigation lights.

Some additional safety tips– Avoid any unnecessary noise that may distract the person steering the boat.– Switch off the gas stove while on the move.– Make sure that nobody hinders the boat captain's vision.

The locks in the direction of Nancy, from Lagarde to Réchicourt as well as on the Saar Canal are automatic and triggered by means of a remote control. You can obtain the remote control at re-ception upon arrival.

Between Arzviller and Strasbourg there are several automated flights of locks: Your boat will be registered every time you pass through a lock and this will start the process of preparing the next lock for your arrival.

If you moor while in a flight of locks or continue on after a break, you must always inform the mobile lock keeper – you can use the lock telephone for this purpose.

What do the traffic light signals mean?No light or 2 red lightsLock is out of order. No entry. Anchor the boat roughly50 metres before the lock, make your wayto the lock telephone on foot and inform themobile lock keeper.

1 red lightLock is still in operation. Please tie up and wait.

1 red and 1 green lightLock is being prepared. You will be able to enter the lock in a few minutes.

1 green lightPlease enter the lock quickly as soon asthe gates have completely opened and any boatpassing through has gone past you.

How is the lock operated?Once the gates are fully open, slowly guide the boat into the lock. In the middle of the lock chamber, go into reverse in order to stop the boat and pull up next to the two control rods (red and blue).

Put a line around the bollards on land to the front and rear of your boat and keep both lines loose in your hand throughout the locking procedure. Always guide the lines under the railing to reduce tension.

LOCKS

Page 9: LAGARDE/ ALSACE-LORRAINE · ALSACE-LORRAINE Emergency number of the houseboat base in Lagarde in the following cases: – accident – damage to the boat – mechanical problems on

Safety informationDon't fasten the ropes to the cleats and don't wind them around your hands, since they must be handled quickly so that the boat can follow the water level inside the lock. Whenever possible, keep a safe distance of  5 to 10 metres from the front gate of the lock.

In the event of an emergency, pull the red rod downwards so that the lock comes to a stop.

Push the blue rod upwards to activate the lock mechanism. Only use the red rod in an emer-gency! Pull this downwards to stop the lock mechanism.

Once the gates have closed, the water level in the lock will start to evenly fall. Give the lines more or less slack according to the water level. Ensure that your boat’s fenders don’t “hook” onto the lock walls. If necessary, push the boat away from the wall slightly using the boat hook.

A loud alarm or flash of light will signal that the gates are opening. Bring the lines in once the gates have fully opened and slowly guide the boat out of the lock.

Ensure that any other boats are also ready to exit the lock. Don’t leave the lock too quickly if there are other boats behind you, as otherwise the detectors may start closing the gates too early once you have left.

So that the person who triggered the locking can get back on board again after the descent, ladders are recessed into the lock walls. Be careful – these are usually slippery. You can always pull over a little way down from the lock so that they can more easily get back on board. Avoid any accidents. Do not jump from the lock walls onto the boat or from the boat onto the lock walls. It is recommended that children remain inside the cabin when operating the locks. Wearing life jackets is compulsory if they remain on deck.

Opening times of the locks within the cruising area of Hapimag houseboatsPlease allow a sufficient time buffer when planning your boat trip and use the distance table on page 4 of your route planner to help you. Life jackets must be worn during the locks. The locks remain closed on May 1st.

TECHNICAL INSTRUCTIONS

Water on boardYour houseboat is fitted with a water tank with a capacity of 370 l (Venus 34) or 480 l (Venus 38/42). The water tank is full when you take control of the boat. You should fill up the water tank at all jetties and ports where this is possible, on average once every two days. Open the water tank lid on deck, connect the hose to the tap and place the other end of the hose inside the wa-ter tank. If the tank overflows, it is full. Keep an eye on the hose at all times.

The water gauge on the dashboard shows you roughly how much water you have left in the tank. Be careful not to use too much water and take care that the water tank never runs empty. Information on which ports and jetties you can fill the tank up with water can be found in the river guide.

The water is supplied to the taps on board using a water pump. The right switch for this is found on the dashboard. The pumps should always remain engage unless the water tank is empty. If this happens you should switch off the pump immediately to prevent it from getting damaged. Warm water is generated by a boiler (approx. 80 l capacity) and produced by the running motor. If you are in a harbour for a longer period of time and the boat is connected to shore power, the hot water will be produced automatically with the 230V shore power.

GasThe oven and cooker on board are powered by gas. In the storage space on board you will find one used and one new gas bottle. The valve of the bottle should always be left open. If the first bottle is empty the switch automatically changes to the full bottle.

Should you smell gas onboard the boat, stop the gas supply by turning off both emergency valves in the kitchen cupboard. Get in touch with the houseboat base immediately if you smell gas or if your gas supply has run out.

RefrigeratorThe refrigerator is powered using a separate battery (12 V) when out on the water and switches to 220 V automatically when the boat is connected to an onshore power supply. If you are out on the water for long periods of time in summer without a shore connection please run the en-gine at half power for 30 minutes every now and again.

The main switch for the refrigerator is on the dashboard. If the refrigerator is not working check first to see if it is plugged in and if the battery tester indi-cates that the batteries still have power. (The display should show between 12 and 13 A.) Please ensure that the door to the freezer compartment is closed when you close the fridge, as other-wise the fixture may break off.

Cooker and ovenTo turn on the cooker or the oven, press the appropriate button (6) downwards, turn it and switch on the gas supply with the integrated gas lighter (7) at the same time. Press down on the button for about another 8 seconds until the flame lights by itself. The burners are equipped with an automatic safety system which switches off the gas supply au-tomatically if the flame goes out.

If you want to bake bread in the oven, choose the grill setting and leave the oven door slightly ajar when baking so that the flame doesn't go out.

HeatingWith the air heater you can make your boat comfortably warm in no time. Multiple warm air out-lets ensure that the air inside the boat is dry. Don't leave the heating on when doors or windows are open – this saves on fuel and is environmentally friendly.

To turn on the heating system and the towel dryer in the wet rooms, set the “Heater” switch on the control panel on the inside steering position to “On”.

Then turn the black knob under the thermostat in the lounge to the right (the green light must come on).

Now you can adjust the heating in the lounge and in the cabins individually by twisting the dial on the thermostat. The towel dryers in the bedrooms can now also be adjusted individually with the temperature control knob.

The heating doesn't come on straight away or half an hour later it still isn't producing any warmth? First off, test the batteries. If the batteries are too weak, use the engine to charge them up (see item “Start the engine”). If that doesn't help, please contact the technical emergency service.

ToiletThe boat is fitted with electric toilets. These work using a centrifugal pump with a 12 V power supply. Press down on the white button for a few seconds to rinse out and empty the bowl.

Do not put any foreign objects or large quantities of paper into the bowl. The system is very susceptible to blockages. You will be charged for any technician visits The wastewater tank is not in use due to the lack of pumping stations for waste water.

Starting and switching off the enginePlease only use the ignition switch on the inside steering position to turn the engine on and off. Check first that: 1. there are no ropes in the water which could clog the propeller2. the throttle is in the neutral position

To charge the batteries and generate hot water you can run the engine in neutral and accelerate at the same time. To do this, pull out the throttle into the neutral position and press it forwards.

Always heat up the diesel engine before starting it. Turn the ignition key to the position marked “Heat” and wait 5 seconds. Then turn the key further to the right to the “Start” position and start the engine. Now you can engage forward (FWD) or reverse (REV) gears. To switch the engine off, first put the control lever in neutral position and turn the key to “0”.

Changing the steering positionUse either the outside or inside steering position when driving. You can change the steering position from inside to outside or vice versa as follows: – Make sure that both throttles (inside and outside) are in the “neutral” position.– Use the lever under the inside steering position.– Pull the lever out and turn it to the desired position.– In “Upper” position: drive from the outside steering position.– In “Lower” position: drive from the inside steering position.

Power on board You only have 230 V power in the sockets: a) when the boat is connected to an onshore power supply at a portb) when the electrical inverter is switched on.

The electrical inverter changes 12 V to 230 V. It may only be used when the engine is running at the same time, otherwise the batteries will go flat after a short time.

In order to supply the sockets in the boat with electricity (230 V), the boat must be connected to shore power with the blue extension cable. The green light indicates that electricity is present in the sockets.

When the boat is sailing, and you need power in the sockets, please press the blue button to put the current converter into operation. The red light goes on and indicates that electricity is present in the sockets.

Important notice:Please always switch off the inverter before connecting the boat to shore power.

Green light: 230 V from shore powerRed light: 230 V from the inverter

The two lights must never light up at the same time.
