One Acadiana, formerly the Greater Lafayette Chamber of Commerce, is the leading force in the improvement of the business environment, the economic health, development, and prosperity of the region.

One Acadiana is the premier economic development organization for the nine-parish Acadiana region located in south Louisiana. With over 1,200 investors, members, and partners, One Acadiana serves as the voice of the regional business community. The organization is located in the city of Lafayette and serves a region of roughly 700,000 people with a vibrant culture and unique entrepreneurial spirit.

We are extraordinarily excited to share that we recently achieved our fundraising goal in The Campaign for One Acadiana. This accomplishment means we now have the funding and leadership in place to begin implementing our bold, new regional initiative for the businesses and families of Acadiana.

This initiative will deliver a new, highly professional, nationally competitive economic development program for the region, which will help manage Acadiana’s current and long-term growth, retain and grow current business, and diversify the economic base by attracting new emerging growth industries and professional talent.

Our 2015 Board of Directors represents a diverse group of businesses of all sizes, across every parish and every major industry sector in Acadiana. As their fi rst order of business, they adopted a 2015 Business Plan focused on the priorities of our members and investors. In addition, they voted unanimously to adopt the new name “One Acadiana” as we embark on this regional transformation.

The Board of Directors will be supported by the guidance and vision of our CEO Advisory Council, comprised of the biggest investors in One Acadiana.

Everyone who is a current member of the Chamber is automatically a part of this new regional organization. We are not creating a separate organization. We are transforming into a regional organization. We will continue to represent our general membership and are excited to provide new regional engagement opportunities.

Lafayette is located along Interstate 10, between New Orleans and Houston, Texas. It is 35 miles north of the Gulf of Mexico, known for its abundance of seafood and recreational opportunities, and 15 miles west of the Atchafalaya Basin, America’s largest river swamp.

Lafayette is the government seat for Lafayette Parish, which is located in the hub of the nine-parish region in the heart of Acadiana which includes Acadia, Evangeline, Iberia, Jeff Davis, Lafayette, St. Landry, St. Martin, St. Mary, and Vermilion Parishes.

A large number of the 230,000 Lafayette Parish residents are called Acadians or “Cajuns.” The name comes from the Acadian settlers who were forced to leave Canada in 1755 and migrated to this region in search of a new home. The Cajuns are famous for their style of cooking, which includes well-seasoned dishes like gumbo, crawfish etouffée, and jambalaya.

Downtown Lafayette initiated a revitalization effort in the 1990s and today is once again the cultural center of the city. The continuing proliferation of restaurants, galleries, shops, museums, bars, and weekly live music events is evident in the vibrant core of greater Lafayette.

Today, about 45 percent of the people in Acadiana still speak French as a second language, although the “Cajun French” dialect has words unique to the area, like “cher,” “canaille,” “boucherie,” and “ca c’est bon.”

Though the area is predominantly Catholic, every major religion is represented in Lafayette, including Protestant, Jewish, and Islamic religions.

Lafayette received its name in 1884 to commemorate the Marquis de La Fayette who fought in the American Revolution. It was originally named Vermilionville in 1821 by its founder, French speaking Jean Mouton.

The 250th anniversary of the birth of the Marquis de La Fayette was celebrated community-wide in 2007.

Two nationally recognized telecommunication providers have established Lafayette as one of the most connected cities in the nation. LUS Fiber, a division of the municipally owned Lafayette Utilities System, and Cox Communications offer TV, Internet, and phone services to homes and businesses in the city. The cumulative networks’ expanded bandwidth plays a key role in Lafayette’s economic development and has garnered regional, state, and national interest. The assessor's primary responsibility is to find the fair marketvalue of your property. Assessors are mandated by state law toreassess property at least every four years. The next mandatoryreassessment will be in 2016.

Louisiana’s laws allow the application of several exemptions orabatements of property taxes.

To register to vote in Lafayette Parish, you must be a U.S. citizen, at least 18 years old, mentally sound, and under no order of imprisonment for the conviction of a felony. You can apply in person at the Registrar’s office: Parish Government Building, 1010 Lafayette St.

Helpful Community Information:

● An out-of-state driver’s license is valid for 30 days after establishing residency in Louisiana.

● The regional Office of Motor Vehicles is located at 3241 N.W. Evangeline Thruway.

● To register your vehicle, go to the OMV no more than 30 days after moving to Louisiana.

● Inspection stickers are due immediately upon changing your vehicle title and are available at any Louisiana Vehicle Inspection station. You will be asked to present a Louisiana driver’s license, vehicle registration certificate, license plate, and proof of liability insurance. The inspection cost is $10.

● There is an eight percent sales tax in the City of Lafayette. This includes a four percent Louisiana state sales tax, two percent Lafayette Parish School System tax, and two percent city tax.

● Certain exemptions apply. The Lafayette Parish School Board is the collection agency for all taxing bodies in this parish. For more information, call (337) 232-3912.

● Louisiana state income tax is based on a percentage of federal income tax liability. The deadline for state filing is May 15. For more information, call the Department of Revenue and Taxation at (337) 262-5455.

LAFAYETTE PARISH SCHOOL SYSTEM The Lafayette Parish School System, dedicated to college and career readiness, is comprised of 42 public schools: 23 elementary schools, 11 middle schools and five high schools, one STEM Magnet school, one Early College Academy, and one Preparatory school all accredited by the Louisiana Department of Education and the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools. LPSS also has six “Schools of Choice,” six high school “academies,” World Language Immersion, gifted & talented, alternative programs, an arts academy, and an early childhood education center. The student population is more than 30,000 and employs a workforce of about 4,500. Furthering educational excellence, the high schools designated as academies create career-themed learning communities for students and encourage real-world experience through course work and internships.

Maintaining a performance letter grade of “B” since 2012 the school system continues to grow in student performance. At the end of the 2013-2014 school year, 74 percent of its schools received an “A”, “B”, or “C” letter grade. Data also indicated an

increase in its freshman to senior cohort graduation rate index from 91.8 to 94.2 percent graduation rate.

In Lafayette, GEAR UP works collaboratively with LPSS, higher education and business partners to provide resources to students and parents in order to prepare and motivate students to achieve beyond their current expectations. UNIVERSITY OF LOUISIANA AT LAFAYETTE Founded in 1900 as the Southwestern Louisiana Industrial Institute, now the University of Louisiana at Lafayette, is the second-largest four-year public university in the state. For over 100 years, UL Lafayette has been garnered strong community support that shows pride and spirit towards the university’s ongoing academic tradition. The student population at the university is in excess of 17,000, including 1,500 graduate students. UL Lafayette offers 80 bachelor’s degrees through 10 colleges and schools, including one of the most sophisticated computer science programs in the nation. UL Lafayette has extended its campus almost 600 acres to include the University Research Park, CAJUNDOME and Convention Center, University Hotel and the state-of-the-art Paul and Lulu Hilliard University Art Museum, with more than 1,500 works of art. The University Research Park houses a NASA Regional Application Center, a division of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, the National Wetlands Research Center, the Lafayette Economic Development Authority (LEDA) and the Louisiana Immersive Technologies Enterprise (LITE) among others. OTHER COLLEGES, UNIVERSITIES, AND INSTITUTES The Lafayette area offers a wide range of postsecondary educational opportunities for students. A community college and numerous vocational and technical schools and colleges augment the UL Lafayette experience and serve a variety of needs for thousands of students in Lafayette Parish. Programs of study offered range from nursing, business, and computer programming to teacher preparation, cosmetology, and emergency medical services, to name a few.

In 2012, South Louisiana Community College merged with Acadiana Technical College, making it one of Louisiana’s largest comprehensive community colleges. SLCC is a SACS-COC accredited institution with campuses in Abbeville, Crowley, Franklin, Lafayette, New Iberia, Opelousas, St. Martinville, and Ville Platte. Academic offerings include technical diplomas, workforce training, high school dual enrollment, and two-year degree programs that transfer to four-year universities.

Food, language, and music are not the only unique qualities of this area. The French influence in this part of the country provides us with our own unique body of civil law, the Napoleonic code. Louisiana is the only state in the Union to have a civil code of laws with an origin dating back to the French Civil Code of the Napoleonic era.

The large professional service industry in Lafayette is heavily populated with attorneys and legal professionals who practice all aspects of law, including many professionals in the oil and gas industry who hold law degrees but do not practice traditionally. According to the enrollment figures of the Lafayette Parish Bar Association, Lafayette has over 1,100 attorneys in all aspects of practice in this area.

The Lafayette Bar Association (LBA) was officially created in 1972 as a professional association for the legal community. The association is dedicated to providing high-quality programs and acts as an important resource to its more than 900 members. The association is funded through membership dues and professional services, such as CLEs and publications.

The association is a professional membership organization whose mission is to serve the profession, its members and the community by promoting justice, professional excellence, respect for the rule of law and fellowship amongst attorneys and the court.

The Lafayette Parish Clerk of Court and the 15th Judicial District of Louisiana are located in the Lafayette Parish courthouse, Downtown Lafayette at 800 S. Buchanan St., Lafayette, LA 70501. This National Park facility features extensive exhibits and artifacts recounting the story of the Acadian region population, their history, language, music and architecture. Lafayette’s oldest authentic vision of life in 19th century Southwest Louisiana, LARC’s Acadian Village is a showcase of authentic homes along a winding bayou, which depicts unique Acadian architecture of the time. The homes were restored on-site and are filled with period antiques. Open daily, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

In the month of December, attend Noel Acadien au Village. It has been a part of LARC’s fundraising history for 30 years. Since the 1950s, LARC has been dedicated to serving the needs of people in the community with developmental disabilities. Throughout LARC’s existence, they have continually expanded to fully include their clients in the mainstream workforce of the community.

Visitors from around the country and across the globe join Acadiana in touring the 10-acre grounds. There is so much to enjoy at Noel Acadien au Village – one trip isn’t

Lafayette’s downtown multidisciplinary arts venue, the Acadiana Center for the Arts, includes a 5,000-square-foot main gallery space and three smaller galleries; lectures and seminars; studio spaces; musical, theatrical, and dance performances; and a gift shop. The James Devin Moncus Theater has seating for 300 and state-of-the-art acoustics. Its re-configurable space can accommodate every type of performance – theater, dance, film and music – from a full orchestra to a Cajun or Zydeco band. The Downtown space also houses AcA’s well-known programs, such as Louisiana Crossroads and the Arts in Education Family Performance Series, providing a hub for arts in the heart of Acadiana.

The Lafayette Museum is the 19th-century home of Louisiana’s first Democratic Governor, Alexandre Mouton. Period furnishings, paintings, documents, maps, and Mardi Gras costumes are on display, in addition to artifacts from the Civil War. The Cathedral of St. John the Evangelist, completed in 1916, is listed on the National Registry of Historic Properties. Located near the Dutch Romanesque church is the third-oldest oak tree recognized by the Live Oak Society. The above-ground cemetery dates back to 1820. The museum chronicles the parish history through artifacts, documents, and memorabilia. It also houses a notable Italian Nativity. Vermilionville is a Cajun and Creole Heritage and Folklife Park located along the banks of the Bayou Vermilion in Lafayette. The historic village is made up of 20 structures, seven of which are original homes of the area that have been moved to our site. In addition to the homes, Vermilionville’s village includes a Native American hut, a blacksmith shop, a schoolhouse, a chapel, and more.

The village’s structures, the artifacts found inside and even the plants on the grounds are meant to represent life for the early Acadian and Creole settlers in Louisiana between the years of 1765 and 1890. Costumed historical interpreters demonstrate traditional crafts, cooking, gardening, and music throughout the village. Schedule a boat tour down the Bayou Vermilion to see Lafayette from a whole new vantage point (weather and water conditions permitting).

Vermilionville also has an eight-room, interactive watershed exhibit, showcasing how humans affect waterways and what the water means to mankind, focusing specifically on the Bayou Vermilion. The on-site gift shop is filled with this area’s locally crafted items, Cajun and Creole music, movies, books, and art, plus beautiful fleur-de-lis items. Yearly memberships are available. PARKS Parc International Located on the corner of Garfield and Polk Street in downtown. The largest of the three downtown parks, Parc International is gated, includes a stage, two backstage dressing rooms, two public restrooms, two water fountains, two pavilions and an equipment room.

Parc Sans Souci Located downtown on 201 E. Vermillion St., it includes a gazebo, grassy areas, and a large fountain, which is a favorite among park goers. This park is used for concerts, races, weddings, and more.

Music and food are an integral part of the Cajun way of life. This is evidenced by the many festivals held in the region with entertainment provided by Cajun and Zydeco music and irresistible food.

FESTIVALS Although there is a festival somewhere every weekend in Acadiana, Lafayette’s two main festivals represent both the Cajun and Creole culture and its international influences. And, of course, each festival has a food component, so you will not go hungry while dancing the day and night away.

Festivals Acadiens et Créoles Started in 1972 as an effort to keep Cajun and Creole culture alive, Festivals Acadiens et Créoles has grown into a free three-day festival in October attracting people of many different nationalities from all over the world. Festivals Acadiens et Créoles features some of the finest Cajun, Creole, and Zydeco musicians around Acadiana.

The festival is held in Girard Park and also offers authentic Cajun and Creole cooking, rich cultural heritage and art

Festival International de Louisiane Festival International de Louisiane is a community-based, nonprofit arts organization that produces an annual, free five-day visual and performing arts festival in Downtown Lafayette.

Festival International celebrates the French cultural heritage of southern Louisiana, which consists of a combination of French, African, Caribbean, and Hispanic influences.

The festival places special emphasis on highlighting the connections between Acadiana and the Francophone world. Each year, performing visual and culinary artists from Europe, Africa, Canada, the Caribbean, and the Americas are invited to share their talents with Louisiana artists, residents, and visitors.

Since its inception, Festival International de Louisiane has become internationally recognized as a premier presenter of some of the most unique world musicians and performances in the U.S. Popular Louisiana artists such as Aaron Neville, Dr. John, Irma Thomas, Allan Toussaint, Zachary Richard, Sonny Landreth, Beausoleil, Buckwheat Zydeco, Boozoo Chavis, Amedee “Bois Sec” Ardoin, D.L. Menard, Terrance Simien, Gary Clark Jr., C.J. Chenier, Geno Delafose, Marc Broussard, Marcia Ball, Clarence “Gatemouth” Brown, Canray Fontenot, and Buddy Guy have all performed on the Festival stages. Mardi Gras A Louisiana tradition, Lafayette has its own style of Mardi Gras, which is the second-largest in the state. The Mardi Gras season features parades, balls, masking, and more, most in a family friendly atmosphere. Krewes begin gearing up for the season months in advance, as do the Southwest Louisiana Mardi Gras, Lafayette, and independent Mardi Gras associations. The festivities kick off each year with the Friday night parade and Le Festival de Mardi Gras a Lafayette at Cajun Field and continue through Fat Tuesday. Surrounding towns all have their
