Welcome from the A.D.

August, 2003

Dear Friend of Yellowjacket Athletics:

Greetings! Welcome to another exciting spring semester of Lady Yellowjacket Softball. I sincerelyhope you will find the information contained in this media guide helpful and informative.

As you look through this softball media guide, you will notice the presence of many corporatesponsors. I encourage you to visit the business locations of our many corporate partners and tellthem how much you appreciate their involvement in our intercollegiate athletics program. The rolethey play in our program is significant, and I hope you will join me in thanking them for theirinvolvement. Many of these corporate partners have been with us for many years. It is ourcontinuing pleasure to develop and enhance these important partnerships in Billings and thesurrounding area.

Similarly, I sincerely thank you for your interest. I encourage you to become even more activelyinvolved in any aspect of Yellowjacket Athletics. I would be happy to explain any number of waysyou can get involved, such as joining the Yellowjacket Athletic Association by joining a sport’sbooster club, volunteering to help at games or other events, serving on a sport advisory committee, etc.

We are indeed very proud of the fine tradition this university has developed in the academic andathletic arenas. Since day one in 1927, we have had a Yellowjacket Athletics program. Ouruniversity leadership has historically and consistently valued the role played by YellowjacketAthletics in the overall higher education experience of our students. Our current universityadministation, under the leadership of Dr. Ronald Sexton, Chancellor, has continued that same beliefsystem.

We are very proud of the academic achievement of each Yellowjacket. We are very pleased with thefact that each team continues to maintain team grade point averages above 3.0. Last year, for thethird year in a row, our women’s cross country team led all NCAA Division II schools in the nationwith the highest grade point average. Our student-athletes are indeed scholar-athletes.

Again, I hope you enjoy this publication, and I look forward to getting your feedback on this or anyother aspect of our Yellowjacket Athletics program. Cheer hard and cheer loud. I invite you to bringa friend to cheer with you. I hope you enjoy the season. Thank you.

Sincerely,

Gary R. Gray, Ed. D.

2004 Outlook

Experience Inspires Confidence as Yellowjacket Softball Team Readies for Season OpenerFourth Season of Competition Expected to Be Best Yet

BILLINGS, MT – Even though there was snow on the ground and the temperatures were below zero in Billings just aweek before the season, the Montana State-Billings softball team threw its first pitch on February 5. The Yellowjacketsreturn the nucleus of last season’s 15-20 team, including five players who earned all-conference recognition. For thefirst time ever, MSUB will have more upperclassmen (nine) than underclassmen (seven) on the roster, and that has bothcoaches and players feeling optimistic.

The Yellowjackets kick off the 2004 season at the Las Vegas Classic on February 5-7, playing six games in three days. The tournament promises to be a good preseason test, with a Friday match-up against No. 12 Barry University on theschedule. Including the game against Barry, MSU-Billings has ten games this season against teams ranked in theNFCA Top 25 preseason poll. Longwood, which the Jackets face on the opening day of the Las Vegas Tournament, might have also been a top 25 team had the Lancers not begun the transition to Division I this year. The same goes forthe Jackets’ final opponent of the season, Northern Colorado.

Following the Las Vegas Tournament, the Yellowjackets fly to Hawaii for their PacWest Conference season opener. This year, they play four games at Hawaii-Hilo and four games at Chaminade. MSU-Billings was picked to finishfourth in the PacWest in a poll of league coaches. Despite the fact that the Yellowjackets are beginning just their fourthyear of NCAA competition, the return of five all-conference players has head coach Jeff Aumend optimistic about theJackets’ chances in 2004.

“This should be a great test for us this season,” said Aumend. “We’ve increased our number of games to be morecomparable to other schools in the West region. With a heavy class of juniors, we are starting to gel. We finished stronglast season and expect that to carry over. Our pitching will be challenged with a tough schedule. Offensively, we hadsix hitters over .300 last year and we’re working on being the best offensive team in the region.”

With 31 road games on the schedule before their first contest in the friendly confines of Cenex Stadium, theYellowjackets will have numerous opportunities to find out where they stack up in the region. Aumend anticipates abetter than usual start to the season as the eight games in Las Vegas are expected to be an added bonus in preparing forconference and regional play.

Traditionally, the first games of the season for MSU-Billings have been the conference openers in Hawaii in the middleof February. Those games in the 80-degrees sunshine are often the first time the Jackets have played outdoors since theprevious fall, providing the Hawaii schools with a distinct advantage. In two years of conference play, theYellowjackets are a combined 1-15 in Hawaii. Coach Aumend’s crew intends to change that trend this year.

“The PacWest will continue to be tough,” said Aumend. “Western New Mexico is the favorite again with the two-timepitcher of the year (Angela Slaugh) returning as a senior. This will be our third year competing in the PacWest and I’dlike to see us move into the upper tier. Our pitching will have to take it to another level to do so.”

The Yellowjackets open PacWest play on February 11 and 12 at Hawaii-Hilo. The Vulcans were picked second in thePacWest coaches’ poll behind Western New Mexico, mostly due to the return of sophomore pitcher Leo Sing Chow, who was the freshman of the year in the PacWest last season. However, Sing Chow had off season surgery on herthrowing elbow and is still questionable for the start of the season. The Yellowjackets won three of four games againstthe Vulcans at the end of last season when UHH was still alive for an NCAA Tournament berth.

MSU-Billings follows the games in Hilo with four games against Chaminade in Honolulu on February 14 and 15. TheSilverswords were picked to finish last in the conference after finishing last in the league last year. The Yellowjacketssplit four games with Chaminade in Billings last year.

After the trip to Hawaii, the Yellowjackets will enjoy two weeks off before playing at the Central WashingtonInvitational in Richland, WA on March 5-7. Last year, the team left for Washington the day after returning fromHawaii. The Jackets will face No. 15 Humboldt State in a double-header in Richland the day before the tournamentbegins, then open the tourney the following morning against the Lumberjacks.

2004 Outlook

5

The Jackets are scheduled for seven round robin games at the CWU Tournament, with possible bracket play on Sundayafternoon. Six of the seven games will be against West Region opponents (Humboldt, Central Washington, WesternOregon, Seattle, Western Washington, and St. Martin’s). The Yellowjackets will face preseason No. 1 North DakotaState on Friday afternoon of the tournament. The Bison were national champions in 2000 and finished third at lastyear’s national tournament.

Following the Central Washington tourney, the Yellowjackets take an eight-game spring break road trip, with fourgames at Western New Mexico. It will be the Jackets’ first-ever visit to Silver City since the two teams have playedneutral site games in Colorado for the past two years. The Mustangs will make a return trip to Billings for four gamesnext season.

MSU-Billings will play its home opener on March 19 at the fourth annual Yellowjacket Invitational. The Jackets willhost Valley City State, Northern State and Dawson CC in a two-day tournament. Friday will be round robin play, withbracket elimination play on Saturday.

Following their first home stand, the Yellowjackets travel to Modesto, California for one of the nation’s biggesttournaments of the year, the Easton Tournament of Champions hosted by Cal State-Stanislaus on April 2-4. MSU-Billings will play four regional games on Friday and Saturday followed by bracket play on Sunday. The Jackets faceNo. 25 Cal State-Dominguez Hills in Friday’s opening round.

Eleven of the Yellowjackets’ final thirteen games will be played at Cenex Stadium, beginning with double-headersagainst Hawaii Pacific April 10 and 11. The Sea Warriors were picked third in the PacWest coaches’ poll. BYU-Hawaii, which was picked to finish fifth in the league, comes to Billings for double-headers on April 24 and 26, andDivision I Northern Colorado visits on May 1 and 2. The Yellowjackets’ only road games during that stretch will be adouble-header at Northern Colorado on April 21 and an exhibition double-header at Dawson CC on April 17.

The Yellowjackets will be anchored by a group of juniors who were part of Coach Aumend’s first recruiting class in2000-2001. The heart of the lineup will be second team All-PacWest selections Theresa Campbell (Jr., DH, GreatFalls, MT), Joey Ehnes (Jr., P/2B, Great Falls, MT), Layne Pavey (Jr., C, Spokane, WA) and Stephanie Cochrun (Jr.,1B/P, Lake Stevens, WA).

The Yellowjackets’ two leading hitters from last season, Campbell and Cochrun, return to lead an offense that rankedfourth in the league for batting average. Campbell’s .341 batting average was the seventh highest in the PacWest andset a school single season record. She also set a school record with seven doubles.

Cochrun ranked ninth in the PacWest with a .339 average, which is second in school history for a single season. Paveywas seventh in the PWC with a .493 slugging percentage and tied for eighth with four home runs, setting schoolrecords for both categories. Ehnes struck out 54 batters, sixth in the conference, and also batted .277. She holds theschool career records for ERA (2.22), wins (12), strikeouts (107) and opposing batting average (.239).

The Jackets other all-conference selection was Megan McCrae (Jr., P, Brandon, Manitoba), who earned all-conferencehonorable mention honors. McCrae will be the Yellowjackets’ No. 1 pitcher this season after logging a school record120.1 innings last year. She was third in the PacWest with a school record 78 strikeouts as a sophomore and posted a3.02 ERA.

Also returning in valuable roles for the Yellowjackets will be Cami Rainey (Jr., IF, Terreton, ID), Sara Hanley (Jr., OF,Kalispell, MT) and Christy Wankel (So., OF, Great Falls, MT). Rainey has a career .316 on base percentage from theleadoff spot and is one of the Jackets’ best bunters. Hanley is the school record holder for career RBI with 28,including 16 last season. Wankel made an immediate impact in center field as a freshman last season, driving in 15RBI and batting .282. She came on strong at the end of the year, hitting three home runs in the final two weeks.

The top newcomers in 2004 are expected to be Aysha Blatter (Fr., C/Ut, Richland, WA) and Anna Henderson (So., OF,Frenchtown, MT). Coach Aumend also expects contributions from Natalie Luehr (Fr., C/OF, Kalispell, MT), CariDunlap (Fr., 2B/OF, Billings, MT), and Caitlin Luehr (Fr., IF, Kalispell, MT).

Almost every serioussports fan is familiar with thethree NCAA membership clas-sifications: Divisions I, II andIII. The public may be lessfamiliar with what the classifi-cations mean, especially inthe case of Division II.

In brief, Division I members are required to sponsor the mostsports and provide the most athletically related financial aid forstudent-athletes. Division III members, on the other hand, are pro-hibited from providing athletically related financial assistance.

So, what does it mean to be an NCAA Division II member? Morethan anything, it is a commitment to balance.

First, members are required to sponsor at least 10 varsity sports(at least five women’s sports) and offer at least a limited amount ofathletically related financial aid, although the requirement is far lessthan Division I’s. Those are the principal nuts-and-bolts standardsthat separate Division II from Divisions I and III.

But other, less tangible, considerations characterize Division IImembership. Student-athletes generally come from the area inwhich their institution is located. They are integrated with the stu-dent body. Many coaches and administrators perform other jobsor functions at their institutions, including teaching. Most Division

II student-athletes pay for school through a combination of schol-arship money, grants, student loans and employment earnings. The division’s philosophy emphasizes participation, and its finan-cial aid requirement helps ensure quality competition.

National championship opportunities in Division II are compara-ble to those in Divisions I and III. For 2003-04, Division II national-championship competition will be offered in the following sports:

Men WomenBaseball BasketballBasketball Cross countryCross country Field hockeyFootball GolfGolf LacrosseLacrosse RowingSoccer SoccerSwimming and Diving SoftballTennis Swimming and DivingIndoor track TennisOutdoor track Indoor trackWrestling Outdoor track

VolleyballIn addition, Division II institutions and student-athletes are eligi-

ble to compete in National Collegiate (all division) Championships inwomen’s bowling, men’s gymnastics, women’s gymnastics, men’svolleyball, men’s water polo and women’s water polo. Coed nationalchampionships also are conducted for all divisions in fencing, rifleand skiing.

NCAA Division II continues to evaluate and strengthen academicstandards to help ensure that the student-athlete experience isfocused on education.

At the 2003 NCAA Convention, the Division II membershipvoted to increase the standard for initial academic eligibility byincreasing the minimum number of required high-school corecourses from 13 to 14. The membership also voted to strength-en the progress-toward-degree requirement by increasing thegrade-point average required after the first and second seasonsof competition. The Division II Academic Requirements Commit-tee also continues to study the academic performance of trans-fer student-athletes to determine if additional regulation in thatarea is desirable.

A Division II degree-completion program ($241,000 in 2003-04)provides grants to assist student-athletes who did not completetheir degree before their eligibility expired. A $1 million AcademicSupport Program to improve the Division II’s academic environ-ment for student-athletes also was initiated in 2003-04; this pro-gram helps provide additional staff, such as academic counselors

or advisors; tutoring pro-grams; the ability to grantscholarships (such as apostgraduate scholarshipprogram); or underwritecomputer labs.

Meanwhile, the division ismoving toward a “gradua-tion-success” report that willprovide an improved mea-sure of academic outcomesfor Division II student-ath-letes. The new method willbetter account for transferstudent-athletes and stu-dent-athletes who do notreceive athletically relatedfinancial aid. A final decisionon the alternate measure islikely in fall 2003.

Division II Academics

Division II challenged 90 student-athletes and administrators tostrengthen the Division II identity when the first Division II Leader-ship Action Academy was conducted in February 2003 in Indi-anapolis.

The participants teamed to provide a unique perspective, ultimately focusing on the Division II attributes of “reality,”

“family” and “balance.”

“I love that the volleyball team is my family,” said one stu-dent-athlete. “I know the players on the football and basketballteams. I know the people we’re playing, and I know the peoplein my classes.”

Another participant said he valued the fact that his presidentknew his name, his hometown and what position he plays.

The academies will be conducted in each of six regions over athree-year period.

Other Division II programs that directly benefit student-athletes:

• Health and safety grants ($250,000 in 2003-04). The grantsaddress issues such as hazing, misuse of alcohol and substanceabuse.

• Conference Student-Athlete Advisory Committee grants($250,000). The grants enhance the effectiveness of conferenceSAACs.
